A Pack commit squared off Saturday against a player NC State would love to get…

Lorenzo Brown scored 19 points and dished out eight assists but Centennial fell to No. 16 South Atlanta 88-77 Saturday at the Elite 8 Thanksgiving Hardwood Classic.  In that game, undecided player Derrick Favors scored 29 points,  nabbed 12 rebounds and blocked four shots, had four steals and three assists for South Atlanta.

Gator Bait: Elite 8: Peach State Prospects Shine

“[Brown] scored 19 impressive and aggressive points and dished out eight assists in the defeat. Brown played with great intensity from tip to the final buzzer and did everything that he could possibly do in order to put his team into position to win a tough game.”

Regarding Favors, the same article said:

“After helping his South Atlanta team win it’s first game of the season, Derrick Favors stood outside the back door of the Georgia State Sports Arena on a rainy Saturday night handing out hugs to female schoolmates and getting pats on the back from friends and families.

“Favors was smiling in large part to his 29 point, 12 rebound, four block, four steals and three assist effort in South Atlanta’s 88-77 win over Centennial.

“There were no questions from strangers asking him where he is going to college. There were no over eager super fans begging and pleading with him to choose their school. There were no coaches waiting for him outside of the locker room.

“It’s nice, not having to worry about any of [the recruiting pressure],” Favors said after the game. “There are no worries. I can just play ball. I can just hear the ball bounce. I can just be me.”

Sometimes it is easy to forget that these blue-chip recruits are just kids, kids who’d probably rather play hoops and do what other teenagers do as opposed to answer non-stop questions from reporters, coaches and fans alike about what their future plans are.  Keep that in mind if you ever run into a non-committed top recruit.

On the John Wall front, Adam Zagoria posted this on his web site today:

“Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski checked out John Wall, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2009 according to Rivals, on Friday night, according to Dave Telep of Scout. N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe was also in attendance for every game of the Word of God Invitational at which Wall was named MVP. Word of God outscored its two opponents by 63 points in the event.”

One seems to be a certainty: if Wall goes anywhere other than NC State, it won’t be because Sidney Lowe didn’t try hard enough to bring Walls to Raleigh.

Just felt like that fact should be repeated.

We need both of these players to be competitive with UNX. I hate to say it but they are really loaded and will be for some time. I know its bad but I sometimes pray for a recruiting scandal over there or at least the dead body of a hooker is found in Roy’s trunk. Either way I’m sure there would be a loophole for them to stay out of trouble…

  3. McPete 12/01/2008 at 4:13 PM #

    packalum,
kinda reminds me of that saying about being caught with a dead girl or a live boy. they will be great as long as Roy is there. but, is Duke slipping? and more importantly, can we make a move closer to the top?

  4. kyjelly 12/01/2008 at 4:26 PM #

Well the kid is down the block from us,lets hope Sid is there as much as he can.

  5. choppack1 12/01/2008 at 4:44 PM #

I don’t know why Sid’s hard work recruiting Wall and Favors is relevant if we don’t land the kids. I mean, it’s certainly better than him not trying or bungling it, but I can think of nothing more empty and damaging to the long term stability of the program than coming in 2nd place for big time recruits.

If we don’t land these kids the big question is “do we have an executable back up plan?”

After this year – we definitely lose Fells and McCauley. We may lose Costner too – not one person remaining on the roster has proven they can produce as a starter. We have one returning post player – and another one coming in…Neither is taller than 6-9. We don’t have anyone returning as a consistent scoring threat at the 2 or 3.

The good news is that we do have ONE post player coming in. We need another. We also have 2 guards coming in. One of them can be called a combo guard. I’d like another athletic player who can play the 1 and 2 spot and fill it up.

It’s not that down on Sidney for his recruiting. I think he’s got tons of potential in this area – and he’s done another solid job this year. It’s just that if I’m AD – I don’t care about who he almost got, he’ll be judged on whom he did get and what he did w/ them.

Sid’s solid recruiting job w/ this current class – and yes, his ability to get in the door for Wall and Favors, has convinced me he’s earned another year. However, as I think we saw last year, it’s going to come down to the effort and execution we see in this program this year AND next year.

That’s all well and good, BUT…

We aren’t paying Sid to try. He does need to show some real progress next season, whichever recruits he ends up signing.

  7. Alpha Wolf 12/01/2008 at 5:06 PM #

Agreed on not paying Sid to try, but I think even if we swing and miss on Walls and Favors that State will be much improved. If he lands Walls or Favors, or gets really lucky and lands them both then we may be in for the treat of watching a very special NC State team.

Chop, I see your point, but being in the mix also has some positive benefits. It makes kids coming up think that something is going on at NC State that makes listening to the coaches’ pitches worth their time.

College basketball is a lot more recruiting-driven than any other college sport. Unlike the mid-majors, who have the luxury of “hiding” in weak conferences and building a strong enough resume to get into the Dance, NC State has to compete night in and night out in the premiere power conference in the game. That means that State has to have the talent to win in that league and if you don’t go after the best you’ll never be the best…and you’ll struggle every year to get into the tournament that’s the point of the whole season. We’ve seen what 5-8 hardworking middle-talent guys did under Sendek, now I would like to see what 7-8 very talented and hardworking guys can do under Lowe.

BJD95 Progress next season?? Sid gets another pass this year?

  9. choppack1 12/01/2008 at 10:23 PM #

Alpha – So would I. However, I’m kind of worried about some gaping holes I’m seeing for the future. We’ll see – I’ve got an open mind(not that it matters.)

Like I said, I think Sid can be a great recruiter. I also think he knows basketball – but there’s a lot of other stuff that goes into it in order to succeed in the ACC. We’re off to a very good start though for this year, so my fingers are crossed that he’s learning these other things quickly.

  10. redfred2 12/01/2008 at 11:11 PM #

Call me old fashioned, no, don’t even do that, because I AM old fashioned. I believe that teams are supposed to E-A-R-N their way into ANY TYPE of post season play by winning WITHIN their own conferences. There shouldn’t be NINE teams playing FB in the post season from a twelve member conference, in ANY conference, much less the ACC. It’s the same with BB. Now, if some of you guys are content with making an appearance in the NCAA BB tournament, especially after we’ve already thoroughly demonstrated throughout the ACC regular season that we cannot compete with the upper echelon in our own conference, then go ahead.

Please tell me if I’m wrong, but I do not think that there has been anyone who has been successfully recruiting upper echelon BB talent at NC State in over a decade now, has there? It showed up back then, and it is still showing up RIGHT NOW.

If Sidney Lowe misses on both of these guys, and I do not believe that he will, you guys had still better be thankful, because if it wasn’t for Sidney Lowe these two young recruits wouldn’t have ever had NC State on ANY of their lists. I think maybe you guys had better rethink this entire scenario, because this LINGERING disparity in overall talent is what happens when you have people who do not embrace a university’s rich tradition and do not work hard to keep it alive for themselves, as well as those who follow in their footsteps.

This is year three for Lowe, minus some time recruiting-wise, and we DID HAVE a great freshmen who received little or no help from his teammates last season. That FACT is so evident that I don’t really know what else can be said about it? Sidney Lowe did somehow manage to get a late season run out of these kids two years ago, but the truth is that these current upperclassmen are not that physically gifted, and add to that, when they’re attitudes are showing, they’re even worse.

Allow me to explain my reasoning a little further, just listen to the sports media these days, there is hardly anyone one left who even remembers, let alone speaks of, NC State’s great BB tradition anymore. The reason I want Sidney Lowe to succeed so badly is because I, redfred, desperately want to see a link established, back to what was, and back to what should have always been.

The way I see it, we have one last chance, if it doesn’t work, then hire a new coach, change the name, and bring on the “Commuters” of NC State University. We’ll play all of the games in the parking lot.

another big-time 09 recruit is a good possibility. look for one more weather we get wall/favors or not

  12. happypackdad 12/02/2008 at 4:26 PM #

“but the truth is that these current upperclassmen are not that physically gifted,”

Fells & Costner were top30 recruits & very gifted

  13. redfred2 12/02/2008 at 5:26 PM #

^hpd, you’re probably right, maybe I should have just left out the word “physically”.

  14. Gene 12/02/2008 at 6:00 PM #

If we miss on Walls and Favors, it won’t be the end of the world for us. Lowe landed Hickson, so he’s shown he can land the big time recruit.

Both Wall and Favors are most likely one-and-done type players, so we might make a splash next year, but one-and-done players aren’t going to build a program up – look at Ga. Tech. and all the top talent they’ve had come and go through their program recently.

As far as being able to get Wall, it really depends if he wants to stay in his hometown or go somewhere else for a new experience. As someone, who went through elementary, middle and high school in Raleigh, I can honestly say getting out of town and being somewhere new had an appeal for me. I just didn’t have my act together at 17 to pull it off.

  15. NCSU84 12/02/2008 at 11:16 PM #

Can someone tell me why NCSU is the only ACC school not competing in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge? I may be wrong, but this looks and smells like something Jed did. Let me know.

  16. wufpup76 12/02/2008 at 11:25 PM #

    NCSU84,

The regular season last place team in the ACC is left out of the Challenge the next season as the Big Ten (Eleven) has only 11 teams

Of course, if it *could* be screwed up our fearless AD would probably find a way to do so

We’ve got a top 20 class as is. I would imagine if Scott Wood was considered more of an “Athlete” he’d probably be ranked a good 50-75 spots higher. We are well on our way to another top 20 class next year. I think our backup plan to not getting Wall and Favors is already signed.

And Sidney still spent his Thanksgiving holiday sitting on a wood bleacher. I’ll give the man some extra credit for that.

  18. happypackdad 12/03/2008 at 12:36 PM #

guys, look for another ’09 recruit besides Wall/Favors. Word is that he’s big-time! This will be a great class, just wait.

  19. redfred2 12/03/2008 at 12:49 PM #

hpd, care to expand a little?

I was at the Centennial v. South Atlanta game. Lorenzo Brown has some great plays and showed great intensity on offense throughout the game…even when it looked like Centennial was completely out of the game. South Atlanta got out to an early lead and Centennial did manage to pull within 9 points towards the end of the game, but that was as close as it got.

As with most high school players, its hard to tell how strong Lorenzo’s defense will translate to college – at minimum, there a good bit of work to be done. He played some pretty good defense technically (good feet, quick hands, good defensive stance), but there was a lack of effective defensive plays. In short, Lorenzo is great high school player and with some determination, effort and good coaching, I think he can make a great college player.

Favors looked like he could walk onto a college team right now and be pretty effective. He has a quiet style about him, the kind that makes you think he is a really smart kid. He was really a lot of fun to watch. Honestly, based on his style of play, I’m really surprised hes not looking at Duke. I’m glad, just surprised.

Paul Hewitt was at the game (a guy playing in the game before has already committed to GT) and was talking to a South Atlanta coach before the game, but I didn’t see him much after that.

On a side note: Centennial will be playing in Raleigh at the GSK invitational at Broughton HS in Raleigh right after xmas. Wall will be playing there too.
