Sidney Lowe’s Plans To Slow Stephon Curry

Via Ken Tysiac of the Charlotte Observer’s ‘Observations From Above The Rim’ Blog, here is a glimpse into the defensive plans that State coach Sidney Lowe plans to employ tomorrow in Charlotte against Davidson:

  • No junk defenses. “I don’t think you change your defense. You just have to be more aware. You have to be solid. Mentally you can’t have a breakdown, because he can burn you.”
  • Keep a fresh defender on Curry: “I think you have to try to stay fresh, because he’s constantly moving to get open. No shot is a bad shot (for Curry), and when you’re playing against a guy like that you can’t afford to relax.”
  • Don’t Ignore teammates: “We can’t pay so much attention to Curry that we ignore the other guys. (Bryant) Barr can shoot the basketball. They have guys that can score the ball. They played against a team (Loyola, Md.) that doubled Curry the entire ballgame, and still (Davidson) won by. . .30 points.”

On the surface, this sounds like a sound plan, and one can see where Farnold Degand’s play will be critical: keeping Fells fresh and sharp, especially for the stretch run.  Lowe will also avoid making the blunder of Loyola-Maryland’s head coach Jimmy Pastos and doesn’t plan on playing a Triangle-And-Two against Curry the entire game.  LMD lost by 30 to the #24 Wildcats, so it’s obvious that playing 4-on-3 against the rest of the Davidson squad is a shortcut to getting routed.

“Allison misses inside, gets his own rebound, back up and misses again, Davidson with yet another offensive rebound, up and misses once again, and finally State with a rebound.”

Uh, isn’t State bigger and supposedly more physical?

Wait, I’ll answer that, yes, and then no.

“Sloppy is a euphemism for bad coaching. I’ve seen enough to safely opine that Lowe is not a good coach.”

From listening to the radio, and after reading packalum44’s post, should I be of the opinion that McKillop sucks as a BB coach as well?

  3. LRM 12/06/2008 at 2:00 PM #

I’m embarrassed by this team’s complete lack of inspiration. We don’t hustle, we don’t box out on rebounds (or even elevate, for that matter), we don’t chase loose balls, we stand around on defense. Guess some things never change.

Actually, Davidson should be more embarrassed by the fact as bad as we’ve played, we’re still tied.

OFFENSIVE REBOUND after OFFENSIVE F’N REBOUND.

You can tell them to do it, but can you make a player WANT to fight for a
    rebound?

  5. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 2:12 PM #

Oh well, the individuals that comprise NC State’s BB team had as good a chance as any of the smaller Davidson players did, to work harder and grab a few more rebounds, but they DID NOT, once again.

if anyone finds a live video or audio feed (free) for this game, please just update this thread. ty

That’s the game. Curry totally carries the scoring load, while our bigs don’t hustle worth shit. To be only a 5 point loss, this is one of the most God-awful games I’ve ever watched.

Curry carries Davidson it a win. When is God going to smile on us again?

  9. Wulfpack 12/06/2008 at 2:16 PM #

Sidney’s Lowe’s plans to slow S.C. didn’t work worth a darn…That was some poor poor defense and terrible coaching at the end. What the hell kind of inbounds plays were those???

Just another poor performance by the Wolfpack. Our guards are just not productive and they can’t guard anyone. Bad loss.

As far as Curry goes, well he’s just a stud that has a bright future ahead of him.

I have never seen a sorrier group of guys stand there and watch as rebounds go over their heads and into their opponents hands. No intensity at all. There were a few times where Curry was driving to the paint and McCauley WATCHED him.

thought our defense wasn’t bad, but rebounding was terrible,
offense was running well in the beg. of the game, after that it looked pretty bad, not clicking well on offense at all

  12. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 2:17 PM #

Not a bad effort in areas today, but Please Sidney, do not come in and say “I thought we played well” and then leave it at that. You have to call these kids out publicly.

^God will smile on us again when we get a coach who can teach crisp, sharp basketball with 40 minutes of 100% effort.

    Sidney Lowe ain’t it.

my dvr recording cut out with 5 min’s left, and live tv already had gone to GTech. I am glad. Rebounding after the first 8 min’s was totally AWOL, mentally we looked stunted and either not interested or not prepared, or I don’t know – but I am not a happy camper.
Bright side? There was so good raw talent out there today – first time I’ve seen us play this year. But if something doesn’t change quickly we are in for a world of hurt this year.

ok – got to go so the kid can play webkinz.

  15. Wulfpack 12/06/2008 at 2:19 PM #

Our defense wasn’t bad? How about the help side? How about Ben Mac and Costner just standing there grabbing their balls as Curry went in for lay-ups/floaters? How about trying to box out someone after a shot goes up, or better yet, after the guy shoots from the free throw line?

“When is God going to smile on us again?”

God helps those who help themselves…we need to demand excellence. Another last place finish and I think Lee needs to be fired…so we can get a real AD in here, who “knows basketball” and can get us a quality coach…

Wonder if we kidnap Terry Holland from Greenville will anyone mind?

Redfred: McKillop is coaching with inferior players minus Curry. I have watched almost every game on TV and at the RBC since Lowe started. He’s not good. In this case, what you guys are calling sloppy is a symptom of the disease, bad coaching. Like most diseases, bad coaching is cumulative and the symptoms grow stronger over time. If you read my past posts, I am one of the most optimistic fans on this board. When I venture to call Lowe a bad coach, I don’t do it lightly. It has taken me over two years to conclude this. I don’t care what Davidson did last year or what ranking they have or what Vegas thinks. I just watched a superior NC State team get beat by an inferior team with a great player. Poor coaching has caused our team to, well, suck. A good coach with our team wins by double digits.

A little early to throw players or coaches under the bus – I didn’t see anything that indicates that anything has changed since last season. We’ll see – lots of time to play hard if our guys want it like this. I just wondering if our guys are being taught the fundamentals well enough.

Utterly frustrating to watch that game play out! Fells was a no show…offensively and defensively. You can’t have that from your top scorer and someone who is supposed to display “senior leadership”

  20. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 2:52 PM #

    “senior leadership”

If there is any “leadership” on this team, it’s coming from players who weren’t here until Lowe brought them here.

I don’t know what to say. Am I disappointed in Lowe? Yes, and in many ways. Am I disappointed with the players? Not so much so, mainly because the older players haven’t ever shown me that they had the will or desire to play BB on an ACC caliber team. As for the younger kids, that is very frustrating. They’re just taking it all in, and Sidney Lowe seems perfectly content in allowing them to do so.

  21. packalum44 12/06/2008 at 3:05 PM #

2 years and 5 games is a considerable amount of time to evaluate a coach. Not throwing Lowe under the bus. Simply giving a humble opinion. I hope he proves me wrong. Doc Rivers was described as a bad coach until he got the big 3. So there is hope. But, I don’t see Lowe as our next Sloan or V.
Regardless of what I think, he’s got at least two more years and more likely 3 or 4, even if he continues to flounder. If you think Davidson is tough wait till we play FL, Marquette, Wake, UNC, Duke, Miami, Clemson. Really hope we land Wall. Need someone who can take over games. It really mitigates poor coaching and strategy. We had no one on our team that I thought had a prayer’s chance of making that 3.

  22. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 3:06 PM #

“McKillop is coaching with inferior players minus Curry.”

And Lowe has what in comparison, an entire group of players who LOOK LIKE they should be able to out play the opposing players that they line up against? But who then don’t give enough effort as INDIVIDUALS to make it happen on the BB court.

  23. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 3:34 PM #

Hate to admit it, and I don’t listen but once in a blue moon, especially after a loss, that’s when it’s good, but I love to listen to Roy Williams after he’s faced some adversity. He will flat out lower the boom and lay the blame directly where it lies, with no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. He’ll say he messed up, call a player’s name and say they made a silly mistake, note a certain play and call it ridiculous or something like that, but he doesn’t even make an attempt to hide stuff that is blatently obvious to BB fans.

That’s kind of what I thought Lowe would bring to NC State also. Just some flat out honesty. But, it seems that Jed stumbled upon another one of NC State’s favorite types. Just another of the overly, politically correct until it hurts the BB program, the kids in it, and the university itself, type of a BB coach.

Losing this game today doesn’t really bother me, I was almost expecting as much anyway. It’s the way it was handled, not just by Sidney Lowe, but by players who could have made a difference, whether it was Sidney Lowe yelling at them from the coach’s box, or Bozo the Clown.

  24. JeremyH 12/06/2008 at 3:38 PM #

did he take out the lacking players and put in players like thomas and williams who are willing to hustle?

  25. redfred2 12/06/2008 at 7:19 PM #

Jeremy, I know what you’re saying, but with whoever Lowe had in the BB game, the fact is that NC State was right there all day long. All it should have taken, and probably what Lowe may have expected, was for one or two of his interior players to wake up and realize that they were getting hammered on the boards. And for those same players to determine that if they didn’t start playing a little differently and taking care of the immediate problem, then rebounding was going to lose the ballgame for them.

I’d bet that Lowe mentioned something about rebounding to his players during the game today, but even he was dumb as a stump and didn’t, it’s not such rocket science that some college kids couldn’t figure out that when the opposing team’s shorter players are continually snatching rebound after rebound right under your own nose, then YOU, as an individual human being and BB player, are SCREWING UP ROYALLY.
