Semi-Live Bowl Blogging from Blowing Rock

I am in a mountain condo on my blackberry, so don’t expect updates every 5 minutes or graphics of any kind. But I am ready and willing to sort of live blog today, for the last time in 2008.

I feel really good about today’s game, which I fear means impending doom.

3:04 – Eugene loses fumble on first offensive play. This is not starting well.

3:06 – Irving can’t hold onto tough INT. Rutgers converts on 3rd and long. Touchdown is imminent. We are going to have to score almost every possession today.

3:12 – I was wrong – Scarlet Knights forced to settle for 3? Nope, fake FG run in for six.

3:43 – While I ate my steak, the Pack scored 10 points. It would likely be 14-6, if not for a bad 3rd down drop by Andre Brown. So far, the WRs have come up huge. The RBs? Not so much. Wilson near flawless, with only 2 incompletions (throw away to avoid sack, and Brown’s drop). 10-6 Pack after 15 minutes of play.

3:50 – Teel misses wide open receivers on back to back plays. Rutgers punts from our 40 once again. Mike Archer still bending and not breaking.

3:54 – Circus catch by #13 (can that really be the Owen Spencer we know and love?).

4:01 – We are completely shutting down Rutgers’ run game. Maybe everyone does, but I like it anyway.

4:03 – I worry about this review. Thought he made the first down. Wait a minute, it’s not being reviewed! State takes over after a pretty weak punt. Still 10-6.

4:09 – Very weird and ineffective rugby-style punt by Pierson. Rutgers will take over in Wolfpack territory. Both offenses have really slowed down after quick starts.

4:17 – Nice defensive stand by Archer’s unit. Rutgers kicker shanks a bunny field goal. No wonder they ran a fake on their first attempt. State needs to bleed some clock on this possession, and not give Rutgers’ offense another shot this half.

4:25 – These officials suck. Sucking in our favor, but still…

4:30 – Spencer back to his usual butterfingered self. So Russell takes matters into his own hands on a great 15-yard scramble.

4:36 – Touchdown, Andre Brown!! That drive was all Russell, all the time. Let the 2009 Heisman campaign begin. As I’ve said, I would take him over Tebow right now. 17-6, 38 seconds left in the half. Shitty kickoff gives Rutgers a shot. Fuck.

4:39 – I can never remember a game being officiated more in NC State’s favor. This is pretty bad ass! 17-6 Pack at the half.

5:08 – If the coaches want RW to stay on the sidelines, they will have to shoot him. Critical 4th and 1 here.

5:10 – First and goal.

5:12 – Nice, timely holding call by our friendly zebras.

5:13 – Rutgers certainly practiced their gadget plays over the break. I’ve never seen an OT throw a pass in a game at any level.

5:15 – Shitty kicker time. He finally makes one. 17-9 Pack.

5:18 – Holy shit, we really are going to try playing Beck. Fuck me.

5:20 – Time to throw deep, Harrison. Jesus, that was a bad throw even by Beck’s meager standards. And the punt is blocked. Rutgers ball on our 15. Wilson needs to go back in, without question.

5:25 – One point game, all the momentum with Rutgers. Wilson is the only answer.

5:31 – We completely waste a huge kickoff return by Graham. Beck is worse than usual today. You have to think Tom O’Brien is simply taking the long view here – this game is a glorified exhibition, and he isn’t going to take any chances with 2009. Rutgers is going to win big unless our defense or special teams can come up with a score.

5:37 – Clem gets a pick, State ball on Rutgers 19. Should have been worth 3, but Beck throws it directly to a Scarlet Knight. Double fuck.

5:43 – First and goal. Stick a fork in this one, the Pack is done. It was still a good season.

5:52 – Here’s where we are – 13 minutes left, down 2. We need to run the kickoff back to the Rutgers 25 or better so Josh can kick a field goal.

6:01 – Wow, Evans had one more series of magic in him after all. That was the most unexpected thing I have ever seen. 23-19 after failed 2-point conversion.

6:16 – Second drive does not end well. Rutgers ball up three.

Final Score – Rutgers 29, NC State 23.

Scooter, we can also look forward to what will be, when the program is strong enough and deep enough to withstand the loss of a Wilson or an Irving.

    And… 41-10 🙂

Last line I saw was 6.5 Rut.; amazing how accurate the line often is.

I hate for this team that they had to lose a game like this, to injury, when they were playing so hard and so well.

Someone is blaming the defense for this loss; I am not going to do that. NC State’s D stepped it up all day and made huge plays; I am not going to blame them for one that got away. If it weren’t for their play, the offense wouldn’t have even had a shot at winning the game at the end.

I really liked this team and am very upset FOR THEM that they couldn’t go out with a victory. I’m very proud of them for toughing out and achieving so much, especially that 41-10 tattooing on the full-of-themselves heels.

If Wilson is going to get hurt often then Glennon is going to get playing time next year. I think he will bring the maturity to keep the ball in Pack player’s hands and bring his talent to forefront.

Kudos for Daniel — he almost did it. And Beck — well he was Beck. He played like I expected him to.

With all the returnees and a great QBs — next year is going to be great!

    1) The game was over the second Wilson limped off the field.

    2) Harrison Beck should transfer. He is not an ACC-caliber QB. The term “deer in headlights” applies.

    3) As much as it pleased me to see Daniel Evans throw a TD in his last game in a Wolfpack uniform, I was under no delusion he was going to lead us back to win that game. He has no arm strangth at all. Still, thanks for being a great teammate/captain/leader Daniel.

With Russell Wilson, we are a conference championship caliber team. Without him, we’re a sub-.500 team. He’s that good. This guy IS the 2nd coming of Philip Rivers. (Speaking of which, how ’bout dem Chargers?)

I like our chances next year…..

Without Rivers…. errr… Wilson State isn’t the same team. I hope that this game gives State a chance to hold on to Glennon. If State has these two guys for the next 3 or 4 years the future could be bright. This year State learned that without a realistic #2 at QB chances to win are slim.

I think RU played a good game.. they did the best job containing our run game of any team all season…. even when RW was in the game. I do not recall as many negative runs in any game this season. They also kept consistant pressure on our QBs the entire game. RW was just too elusive but they were closer to containing him than any other team. Hats off to them.

They also did a nice job of exploiting our DBs across the middle of the field. This was nothing new but they did a good job of reconizing it.

That being said, if RW does not go down we win the game. Our D got tired in the 2nd half..we had like 6 offensive plays in the 3rd I think for 5 yards. I was a bit encouraged when Evans hit those 3 3rd down plays and led us to the TD.. I was thinking what a great way for him to end his career, but RU was too good for Evans and Beck (as are all D-1 teams).

Congrats to RU.. hope we meet again.

Step off the ledge here folks. Overall, the team was prepared and D’d up Rutgers like the hadn’t been d’d up in some time.

The D did it’s job. The fumble by Eugene and the blocked punt were clearly the difference between a W and a L. If Wilson is healthy, we go on to win this one by 20+ points. Even w/ him being hurt and Beck’s magnificent red zone INT – and Evans INT inside the 50 – we almost still won the game.

I hope it’s just a sprain for Wilson. Folks, if this doesn’t show the guy is here for the long haul – or at least won’t sell his soul for a Victory – I don’t know what does.

About the best thing I can see coming from this victory is Glennon realizing just how much we’ll need him the next couple of years.

As for TOB – last year he redshired Wilson, this year he redshirted Glennon – hopefully, Glennon can be as good as Wilson. As for Evans and Beck – if there’s one thing that disappoints me about this staff – it’s their inability to coax some marginal play out of these 2. I don’t know what happened to the Evans who led to us 3 straight victories…and the Beck who came on in relief – but their mechanics were horrid. I was glad to see Evans lead us to a TD – but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Even if Glennon stays – we need to find a 3rd QB…we are NC State after all.

Tough day in Wolfpack Nation. I had a scheduling conflict with my youngest sons birthday party so I was forced to DVR. Even though I heard we’d lost I watched the game. In the end I was disappointed, but also prouder than ever of this team.

We were well prepared for this game and were clearly ready to play. I think we win this game if we put Evans in immediately and bypass Beck. BTW – What the hell happened to Beck, he looked like a deer in the headlights. He at least used to play with some swagger. Anyway, I’m glad Evans had a chance to somewhat redeem what (for him personally) was a shitty a senior season. He played hard and made some very good plays; in the end one bad decision (the first int) and limited physical ability didn’t allow him to pull out the victory.

That being said, today just makes me appreciate RW more than ever. It says a lot when your backup QB’s throw 3 times the # of picks in one half as RW did all season. I really have to respect TOB for taking the high road today. I’m not sure there are too many other coaches that would have put the well being of their QB before a bowl win – afterall its the last game of the season. I can not only live with that decision, I can say that I stand behind it 100%.

If we can maintain a reasonable level of health next year and develop some of the younger players, I truly think we will be competitive in every game and have a chance at the division. I hope our team has a safe and healthy new year and comes back ready to make a statement next season. I’ll be looking forward to it.

Bad fortune and O Line not on its game. We were not able to run with RW, except when he was running for his life…notice how many times he did not escape?

We started unable to run the ball and when we needed to in the worst way….could not then either. Rutger’s front owned us and that’s just the way it goes sometimes.

Valiant effort by Evans, D did their job pretty much…til gassed.

Had fun with this football team this yr. and despite the loss of RW, still covered.

    I’m ok with the loss.

It’s not worth rusking RW’s career/chance of a major injury for a magical 7-6 year in a toilet bowl.

Losing to Rutgers isn’t embarassing by any stretch- they’re a decent outfit as well. On top of that, we’re not exactly championship material- yet.

As for Evans- I thank him for his contributions. Can’t question his heart.

That’s TOB’s job for next year- get us to that level, or close.

Quote: “About the best thing I can see coming from this victory is Glennon realizing just how much we’ll need him the next couple of years.”

^^ This. If Glennon had any thoughts of ‘will I get to play behind RW?’ this game should have showed him that, not only will he get to play, but at some point in the next year or so, the position will be his to lose depending on his in-game performance.

Great effort, sad to see us go down like we did. Have a few RU friends that mentioned via text that the W was great to get, but not quite as sweet without RW leading the WolfPack at full throttle.

    Go Pack!

Thank you Daniel for your dedication and service.

I hope that is the last time I ever see Harrison Beck in a Wolfpack Uniform.

It’s seem as though most everyone feels okay about this season. They should. TOB took a pathetic early season team and coached them into something we could all be proud of. I clearly remember someone commenting after the South Carolina game that we would not win a game all season. I really didn’t think I could argue with that at the time. Things turned out a lot better than we expected. We’re a good team now….and possibly headed to a really good team next year. Never give up!

Just got in from Al and the Pizza Bowl. Which was a misnomer. If anybody there could find Papa Johns pizza please let me know how. I sat beside the band, walked in on that side and NEVER saw ANY pizza fo sale. Or much else to eat for that matter.
Harrison Beck really has to be seen in person to know how bad he is. I won’t say how bad a QB because that is a disservice to RW and DE to call him a QB. The INT was the icing on the cake. His other throws were pathetic. I hope he had to get his own ride back to Raleigh and simply cannot understand why in hell he ties up a NC State scholarship. Kudos to Daniel Evans for coming in and giving it a try. The kid has heart.
If we don’t get some receivers who can catch the ball it won’t matter who throws it. Yeah, this means you Spencer

Yes it was a tough loss considering RW injury in the 2nd Qtr-but things to come in the near future looks great.TOB IS A GREAT COACH LUCKY TO HAVE HIM-KNOW THANKS TO LEE FOULUP.
Also I know the Evans famliy and they are as fine of a family you can meet and I know Daniel loves NCSTATE as much as anyone. He has said that he’s not the most athletic or talented guy but he is proud to have led this team at anytime in his career and will do what ever is ask of him by this university because he does love this school.
THANKS DANIEL FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP AND FAITH YOU PROVIDED TO YOUR TEAM.
