NC State vs. Davidson: Wildcats Are On a Mission (Updated 3:15pm)

Davidson's Stephan Curry

Tomorrow at 12pm in Charlotte, the Wolfpack tips off against Davidson in the Pack’s first game against an opponent that will be close to the caliber that they can expect to see night after night in conference play. To kick off SFN’s coverage, here’s an article I found about the Wildcat team’s commitment to not be a flash-in-the-pan one-year Cinderella:

WFAE 90.7: Manifesto Helps Guide Davidson Team

The team’s focus turned to this season almost immediately after last season’s loss to eventual national champion Kansas.

Not long after that game, coach Bob McKillop found a four-page letter on his desk.

“They met as a team and put together this four page manifesto, and it covered a variety of topics from the standpoint of basketball technique, training methods, practice sessions, schedule, involvement in the community, the way we would travel, diet,” McKillop says.

“So every aspect of their lives as student athletes was included in this particular manifesto.”

Senior forward Andrew Lovedale says players wanted to express their commitment to improvement on and off the court.

This is going to be a tough game for the Pack and will obviously require the best performance of the the young season in order to grab a win. If you are around the Queen City, tickets are still available here.

SFN Update @ 2:45pm — NC State received some good news today that Farnold Degand is expected to return for the Wolfpack. I can’t stress the importance of Degand’s presence for the Wolfpack’s match-up with Stephon Curry.

Degand’s speed is well known, but his height is under appreciated. At 6’3 and laterally quick, Degand provides the the Wolfpack with another body that can challenge Stephon Curry. I expect Coach Lowe to throw both Courtney Fells and Degand at Curry on Saturday. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if either CJ Williams or Johnny Thomas gets the opportunity to step up and challenge Curry for a possession or two.

Pardon me while I take a moment to promote SFN and our forward-looking analytics. Please allow me to take you back to November 21st’s entry for a moment

Strategically, I *hope* that Coach Lowe is truly treating this as extra-precautionary for Farnold. A quick look at the Wolfpack’s schedule indicates that we *should* be able to takle care of business the next couple of weeks without Degand. “About two weeks” would mean that Degand should be back on the court just in time to help guard Stephon Curry when State battles Davidson on December 6th in Charlotte.

Update 2: Seth Davis Makes His Pick (Based on faulty info)

N.C. State (4-0) at No. 22 Davidson (5-1)

Most major teams have played at least seven games by now, but for some reason N.C. State has only played four. The Wolfpack was the odd team out so it did not participate in the ACC/Big Ten challenge this year. Perhaps it’s just as well, because they are once again without their starting point guard, Farnold Degand, who is suffering from tendinitis in the left knee he had surgery on last December, which cost him the final 2 1/2 months of the season. (SFN Note: see above, Degand will play) N.C. State edged out Davidson last year by one point in Raleigh partly by outscoring the Wildcats from the free throw line 18-6. It will be hard to duplicate that advantage on the road. I also don’t expect N.C. State to double-team Stephen Curry the way Loyola did en route to a 30-point loss. Davidson is at full strength, it’s playing at home and it has already played in a big-time game this season (at Oklahoma). N.C. State can’t say any of those things.

Davidson 79, N.C. State 70

We’ll see, Seth.

No lie, our OOC schedule this year, with the exception of Florida, Davidson and Marquette, is full of cupcakes. Cupcakes with icing and sprinkles and little bite size snickers baked into the middle.

Honestly, it looks even worse than the HERB years. I think this may be due to the first four teams we played having maybe five returning starters between them. I think if Winthrop and UNCG were up to their usual standards, the over all appearance would be much better.

Seth is wrong about Davidson’s “home” court advantage too. We Charlotte members of the Wolfpack will pack out Bobcats Arena.

Also, it is a very Davidson thing to do to write a four page report on your team. I imagine they used proper grammar, avoided the passive voice, and included a bibliography as well.

I agree with the excess of cupcakes – nothing to look forward to except disappointment (if we lose). I’m looking forward to this game – the first ‘test’. We will be playing against a smart team. We should win this one if Lowe is any good. If Lowe isn’t, maybe this will give us a chance to check out a possible replacement? Anyway, a fun time to be had.

First – I wouldn’t expect Degand to play too much tomorrow … Whether he does or not, I’m not sure how much he’ll be covering Curry …

I would hope we start out w/ Gonzalez guarding their 2 guard, Burr – and have Fells on Curry as his primary … When Farnold is in, he can either take Burr or their #3 … Any way you cut it, I hope Fells and Harris (Thomas) are working on Curry for the majority of minutes tomorrow … I’m not too worried about not having Fells guarding their 3 player … I’d much rather lose to their 3-man than I would to Curry … Besides, both Williams and Ferguson can effectively guard a 3 – they won’t be guarding Curry at least … I’d rather have Fells on Curry than Williams right now … Also wouldn’t be surprised if we saw our first defense other than straight man tomorrow … A little junk D isn’t a bad idea if it can work for a few possessions …

Second – I have a healthy respect for what Lovedale brings to the table for them, but we do have a great advantage on the interior … I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a lot of zone D out of Davidson, which means Gonzo, Degand, Mays, Fells, and Ferguson had better bring their sniper shooting tomorrow … I really feel like this will be where the game comes down too – if we can loosen up a zone D enough to establish McCauley, Costner, and Smith … Ball movement against zone D has been pretty good for us so far this season … Let’s hope it continues tomorrow

Curry will probably get his 25-30, and I’m ok w/ that as long as we are establishing ourselves on offense and grabbing boards … If we can do those couple of things I think we could be in good shape

    I’m actually optimistic about tomorrow’s game 🙂 … We’ll see what happens!

    Go Pack!

“We should win this one if Lowe is any good”

Have to respectfully disagree w/ you here … Davidson is a fine team and there wouldn’t be too much shame in losing to them – particularly on a somewhat neutral court … Not saying that I want to, but this will be a quality game for us regardless of the outcome

Davidson did beat a lot of “BCS” teams in the tournament last year and I believe could repeat that this season if given the chance … Don’t get too caught up on the name of a school – if they’re good, they’re good … What do you think the Holes were thinking when they lost to George Mason 3 seasons ago?

    travelwolf, one question for you…

Do you even watch college basketball?

Let me get this straight, you’re saying that “if” NC State loses to the same BB team, the one that was just barely nosed out by the team that drubbed unc and became eventual National Champions last season, that NC State/we should start looking for a new basketball coach?

    Give me a freakin break.

  8. Dogbreath 12/05/2008 at 5:09 PM #

I hate to break the news, but Davidson not only the better team, they are a superior PROGRAM right now, as absurd as it is. NC State program (minus a potentially stellar 09 class) is completely irrelevant now, and hasn’t done squat since 1989.

  9. redfred2 12/05/2008 at 5:38 PM #

Dogbreath, many would argue, but I totally agree with your 1989 assessment. I guess it all depends on the individual’s criteria for success. For me, the relevance of NC State’s BB program begins and ends in the ACC. If you cannot compete for the championship in your own conference, then there isn’t much need to look for a championship elsewhere, is there now?

It’s kind of like the Wildcats of Davidson, many of those same types of Wolfpack fans who would be the first to jump up and say that a program like Davidson shouldn’t even dream of beating an ACC foe like NC State, those same folks who would also tell you that a program like NC State isn’t really capable of competing on the same level as their nearby neighbors in the ACC. Davidson does believe though, and if there is any truth in some of those asinine statements above, it’s that the Wolfpack coaches, and players as well, had better be ready to play hard, smart BB from the very moment the game starts in Charlotte, or it’ll be a Katy bar the door, embarrassment for every one of them.

I’ll be there tomorrow dressed in RED!!

  11. redfred2 12/05/2008 at 5:51 PM #

So highstick, who are you pulling for?

  12. redfred2 12/05/2008 at 6:17 PM #

I’m also wondering if a few of our older Wolfpack players are viewing playing against a talent like Stephon Curry as a challenge, or rather, viewing it as an assault on their own manhood. I mean, they felt that way when they had a similarly skilled player as their own teammate, so why wouldn’t they curl up and die when facing similar talent on another team?

And don’t say that Hickson and Curry aren’t comparable, they’re very different players, but they are both very valuable assets when properly surrounded. The difference is that at Davidson, there are T-E-A-M-mates that allow Stephon Curry to play the game like Stephon Curry is capable of playing it.

It might sound ridiculous to some, but I’m not half as worried about some of the players who may need more time to develop, or being embarrassed by anything done, or not done, by way of the NC State coaching box this season, then I am about the face that our upperclassmen have imprinted on this entire program.

    I just read this – http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/pack-preps-for-davidsons-curry

and in it Sidney explicitly states that the Pack will use no junk defenses on Curry … ^Above I had remarked that I wouldn’t be surprised to see some junk defenses tomorrow … Well, I guess I would be surprised now 🙂

    Go get him Fells!!!

    Go Pack!

Sounds like Valvano saying he would “take the air out of the ball” before the ’83 championship game.

With Sid’s time under Valvano I would not be surprised at all to see a bit of box and one or a triangle and two. Not as the base defense of course but as a bit of a change up to rattle Davidson a bit.

  15. choppack1 12/05/2008 at 9:49 PM #

red – coach has his share of responsibility too.

We simply don’t have enough evidence to say it’s all one party or the other.

  16. redfred2 12/05/2008 at 10:24 PM #

chop, I’m not saying it’s ALL one or the other. I’m also not privy to practice sessions or anything like that, so I could be wrong. I’m strickly basing my opinion on some of the personal efforts that I witnessed on the BB court last season.

  17. choppack1 12/05/2008 at 10:32 PM #

rf – I agree our effort stunk alot last year – but is there any excuse for not putting a different set of players on the court? I’d actually tell you that I thought that our effort stunk at times 2 years ago…and frankly, I don’t blame that on the players – our football coach seems to have nipped that effort thing in the bud.

  18. redfred2 12/05/2008 at 10:54 PM #

chop, I understand, and totally agree about this past season, and what happened the season before that as well. I personally think that Lowe is, or was anyway, trying to feel his way through and hoping to establish some leadership from the upperclassmen on the court. He also needed to win a few games along the way too. I don’t know whether the fans would have been very open to a brand new, inexperienced, head coach shaking everything up back then, and losing BB games along the way without his “best” players in there, just in order to make his point? Or whether maybe they would be more open to seeing him doing something likewise now, after he’s at least a couple of years of experience at the helm? Who knows?

Either way, I do know that I’m personally not any happier than you with the way it was handled and I have been very disappointed that Lowe didn’t seem to think it was necessary to put those kids in their place. Which was on the opposite end of the bench without a second thought, until it was clear that THEY were going change THEIR ways.

About the comparison to TOB, apples to oranges. You’re looking at wealth of head coaching experience, versus a relative newcomer. While that’s not really Sidney Lowe’s fault, NC State hired him regardless, let’s hope he’s wise enough, and humble enough, to ask TOB for some guidance in those areas. Might not help, but it surely couldn’t hurt.

The earlier portions of this thread show so contrastingly the perceptive differences between the majority of the coaches in the basketball divisions of the ACC and our own football coach. O’Brien won’t miss a player like Steph or Seth Curry, and for that I believe all State fans should be eternally grateful. I’m sincerely hoping that Sidney doesn’t miss on the next Curry out there, whether is this year’s recruiting class or the next. As for the game, I’m going to be biting my nails all the way on this one. Too tough to call either way and I really won’t be surprised at the outcome unless there is a 20-point swing in either direction.
