There might be trouble on the Pirate ship, as it looks like there’s some substance behind the rumors that head coach Skip Holtz might be ready to jump overboard for a BCS conference coaching gig:

WSYR (Syracuse, NY): Holtz to SU Rumors Continue To Swirl

It looks like East Carolina head football coach Skip Holtz may be the top target to replace Greg Robinson at Syracuse.

Holtz will be in New York on Sunday to celebrate the induction of his father, Lou Holtz, into the National Football Foundation’s College Hall of Fame.

SU athletic director Daryl Gross is expected to be there as well.

If this comes to pass, expect the Big Four schools to take a long hard look at the Pirate commit list to see if there’s anyone they might want to poach in the inevitable confusion of a coaching search down east.  I’d especially expect Carolina to try to make a run and get their 30-35th commitments for the year.

Sure sounds like they are just working out the details.

Good hire for Syracuse. Major step up for Holtz.

I suppose someone could unexpectedly qualify.

i dont know about Skip. but it is too F*ing cold in NY for me. Plus, i think it has been proven that in recent years, the best athletes, the ones that build championship programs are gravitating more and more to warm weather schools. I mean if youre a 5 star kid from FL or GA and you have Michigan, Notre Dame, and FLorida recruiting you… where would you go?

I would stay in the sweet sunny south and bang SEC girls for 4 years, not freeze my ass off in South Bend. Good luck with that though Skip!

If I was Skip I think I would wait for a better offer.

All State fans should keep Rodney Rogers in their thoughts, prayers and warm wishes as he battles his injury. This should just be the latest reminder that unless you have to ride an ATV you probably shouldn’t.

I was driving to Thanksgiving dinner this year and passed a guy with a young boy riding an ATV down the middle of 264 between Farmville and Greenville, neither were wearing a helmet. Traffic going buy at 70 MPH and this guy is riding in the median. I was thankful I didn’t see a little bloody patch in the road when I returned to Raleigh the next day.

Good luck I guess, if this goes through … Not sure I agree that it is a huge step up for Holtz, but if he does bolt for the Orange he will at least be in a BCS conference … I’m sure they don’t miss Pasqualoni up there, but it has been almost a full decade since Syracuse was anywhere near the top 25 in football

^Agree on Rodney Rogers … that is very tragic and unfortunate … Thoughts and prayers to him and his family

I guess it depends on how much they have to offer. Might be a good place to build a program. Gotta be less pressure than some jobs like Auburn.

I think Duke would of been a better move for Holtz than Syracuse this year. Holtz is a young coach and I would think he better serves his career to stay at ECU until he gets a great offer. Pat Dye and Bill Lewis are great examples of what Holtz can look forward to. No need for him to jump at Syracuse when a better job will be offered soon.

Pat dye left EZU for Wyoming. I would say that Syracuse is a step above Wyoming.

One thing’s for sure, Terry Holland will make a good/smart hire if Skip goes.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Rick Stockstill go to ECTC.

No way Skip goes to Saracuse, but he will get a big fat raise from Pirate Nation and they will play the whole situation out for the point of looking good to their current recruiting pipe line.

This thing has professional PR written all over it. Terry Holland knows how to play the media game.

Skip would be wise to play this out, take the big raise, and stay in Greenville, if only to avoid the 100+ of snow he’ll average coaching the Sorry-Q’s.

Nutt gets a nice raise at Ole Miss today, and a large pot of money to spend on his assistants as he sees fit.
Clempson apparently has hired Miss State’s O & D coaches. That should make the little tiger fans hap-pee.

Hey, I don’t think NY is so cold 😉

Man, if this happens my friends (yes I have some – including a sister) from ECU are going to shoot themselves. He’s the best thing that has happened in Greenville in quite a while.

PackerInRussia – how cold is it?
27 here this morning in north Alabama.

Skip and ECU have been a fair tradeoff. He need to get reestablished (after the South Carolina debacle) and Holland wanted to pull a quick turnaround for ECU football. 3 straight bowls and conf championship game for Pirates. Skip is on the short list for ‘fixerup’ BCS jobs. Anyone with a decent football IQ knows this was a 4-5 year arrangement at most. Skip has his eye on South Bend, Indiana and will take the next step at some point to get there. Both should be happy. Mission accomplished for both parties. ECU folks I’ve heard from rationalize a better situation for Holland to sell to the next guy. That guy may be on staff (Hudson-Def.Coord, or Shankweiler,Offense).

Michael Bradley from the NFL Network reports that Skip Holtz will be named Syracuse University’s football coach on Monday.

Holtz, who led his Pirates to a Conference USA title Saturday, will be in New York City Monday to see his father inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

SU athletic director Daryl Gross will be there, too, watching former Orangeman Don McPherson enshrined into the hall.
The timing would make sense, as Holtz has just one bowl game left to coach with the Pirates this season.

Calls to Gross have not been returned, and the Syracuse University athletic department says it has no knowledge of the situation.

Holtz has recently sidestepped questions about his name surfacing on the SU “wish list”. East Carolina athletic director Terry Holland put out a statement saying Holtz has not had any interviews scheduled with other institutions regarding their head coaching positions.

BTW: East Carolina Pirates – Conference USA Champions: ECU 27, Tulsa 24 (in tulsa). Accept Liberty Bowl vs. SEC (Kentucky or LSU).

NCAA needs to re-write recruiting rules. The recruits should be given some options because of the yearly coaching carousel.

I’m still not sure how coaches at mid level jobs lie to the faces of recruits when they know they are going for a better job at the first chance they get.

NCAA needs to re-write recruiting rules. The recruits should be given some options because of the yearly coaching carousel.

None of ECU’s current recruits has signed a binding LOI, so they are free to switch commitments any time they like.

Look at Auburn, they lost something like 10 commitments on Friday.

  23. RBCRowdy 12/07/2008 at 2:16 PM #

^ I just feel for the players. It seems disingenuous when coaches leave for better jobs. I know that’s how it is and that the players commit to schools and get scholarships, but I just don’t like the way coaches sneak out the back door.

  24. Noah 12/07/2008 at 2:19 PM #

You commit to a school, not to a coach. The school is the one who gives you a scholarship.

  25. RBCRowdy 12/07/2008 at 2:28 PM #

I guess thats just the way it works. This is why I support the players who keep all their options open and commit and the last minute.
