Friedlander: Wolfpack Still Searching For Its Identity

Brett Friedlander of the Wilmington Star-News has an interesting column this morning, in which he posits that so far this year NC State as yet to reveal itself as either a good — or a bad — hoops squad:

ACC Insider: Wolfpack Still Searching For Its Identity

Five games in, the Wolfpack remains just as much a mystery as it was the day coach Sidney Lowe rolled out the balls for the opening day of practice back in mid-October.

Oh, there have been some positive signs, particularly the resurgence of big men Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley – both of whom might as well have redshirted last year for all they contributed.

[…]

At this point, the Wolfpack has the potential to be anything from an NCAA Tournament team to out of the postseason for the second year in a row.

A lot of the up and down play can be attributed to injuries, but at the same time, this is a Wolfpack team that has never been consistent — the same players were as maddeningly inconsistent under the previous coaching regime as they have been under Lowe.  Perhaps that is what their identity is – a team that can beat nearly anybody but can also lose to nearly anyone they play as well.

As Friedlander says, the NCAA is a possibility – the talent is there, assuming Degand can man the point guard position for a majority of minutes and that his play returns to the level is was just before he hurt his knee last seasn.  Also, Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley will have to play 100% every night, and at times, that has been a problem for the talented duo.

At the same time, a losing season in the ACC and a quick exit on the first day of the conference tournament is also a possibility.  Were that to happen Sidney Lowe and his vaunted incoming class for 2009 would be under enormous pressure, and quite possibly Lowe could be coaching to avoid fan revolt – I would say his job, but anyone who knows anything about Lee Fowler and NC State sports knows that Fowler will sit pat no matter what happens.

Bottom line is that talent is indeed on the way for Lowe and his NC State team, but that’s next year and Sidney Lowe needs to maximize this year’s team and get the most out of it that it can possibly achieve.  Slipping into the NCAA would certainly define him as a good coach and a good team-builder.  Having a repeat of last year would leave him with major question marks and a fanbase thinking that he may not be the leader to return NC State to college basketball glory.

I must say, these convoluted stories of signing day misfortunes involving Wright and Warren do indeed remind me of the Les Robinson days–we clearly don’t have the personnel to be competitive in the ACC, so we spin these elaborate yarns about how we could have had “great player X, Y, or Z”…substitute “Jerry Stackhouse” “Jason Kidd” and “Donald Williams” for Wright or Warren, and it’s 1993 all over again…

Slightly off topic, but an SFN post gets recognized by Gary Parrish at CBSSports.com … I posted this in the Coach K accident thread –

You guys got Gary Parrish’s attention at CBSSports.com:

“So Coach K is OK; that’s good news. And though I had a few reasonable jokes of my own, I’ll refrain and simply turn things over to a North Carolina State blog, which commented: “Police have charged the tree that Krzyzewski hit with a flagrant blocking foul and awarded Duke with two shots and the ball.”

    Gene – great post.

I guess the thing that worries me most is that I’ve watched enough basketball to see the difference that coaching CAN make.

I know what I was hoping to see when Sendek left – a team that played hard, with passion, and was a “tough” team – you know the kind of team that you hate having to play because you know that your team will have to play its best to win. Unfortunately, with the exception of a brief run in 2007, and for some reason – whenever we play VaTech – I haven’t seen that.

The best coaches are good talent evaluators, great teachers, effective organizers, great motivators and can inspire confidence and calmness in their players when the world seems to be collapsing around them. They have to be a good salesman.

I do think Sidney has the salemanship down. On occassion, he’s also shown the ability to inspire confidence in his troops. What I remain concerned about are his organizational and teaching abilities. Even if he’s subpar in these areas, he may be a good enough salesman to have some nice runs here in Raleigh. However, if he doesn’t improve these areas, the best that we can hope for is a GaTech type success.

One of the keys to being successful in the ACC is the ability to identify kids who are flying a bit under the radar, but who can come into this conference and be effective in the 1st 2 years. The main reason that HWSNBN was able to keep his job was that he was able to find alot of these guys: Josh Powell, Ilian Evtimov, Marcus Melvin, Cedric Simmons, Engin Atsur and Andrew Brackman – I’d also put Anthony Grundy in this category. To be fair, it took Sendek a while to figure this out – and he had been in the college game for a long time. CJ Williams looks like he may be this kind of player – and he better be – because we’re looking at him and maybe Costner being our only proven players next year.

Any talk of Lowe’s job actually being in jeopardy any time soon is ridiculous. Short of a major scandal or him taking another job, he will be with us for several years to come.
Even if you are disappointed in the effort last year (I am) or concerned that we are discussing whether we can squeak out a win at home against EZU in his 3rd year (put me in that camp too), we all better pull for and pray for Sidney to be the savior we thought he might be his first season.
We made a commitment to give him a chance once we hired him. We were looking like a bunch of idiots at that time and in a way he “bailed” us out. any talk of a change now makes us look like a bunch of idiots again.
My judgement of him will be based on – You’ve had some bad luck and you’ve made your share of mistakes so far. Just don’t make the same ones twice.

  5. Noah 12/15/2008 at 2:29 PM #

Regarding Chris Warren — Supposedly, the staff saw Gonzalez on one night and Warren the next. They could have had either one and they chose Gonzalez.

    Whoops.

“You’ve had some bad luck and you’ve made your share of mistakes so far. Just don’t make the same ones twice.”

    Nice line.

“However, if he doesn’t improve these areas, the best that we can hope for is a GaTech type success.”

I don’t know what would be worse, out-and-out sucking or being all over the map like Ga Tech … The former is sad but consistent; the latter is liable to drive one insane (not that we State folk aren’t already there)

  7. packalum44 12/15/2008 at 2:42 PM #

“He is very talented, but is a true “shoot first, pass as the last option” point guard, which I’m unsure if Sidney really wanted ”

That is where coaching comes into play. Beggars can’t be choosers. Chris is way better than what we have now.

  8. choppack1 12/15/2008 at 2:44 PM #

wulfpup – If that’s the case – I think it’s worse to all out suck – no question about it. However, if you are talking about having a team that is consistent, but never quite turns the corner or being like GaTech. I think you end up w/ the same de facto problem – you don’t win any championships.

whitefang – I see where you are coming from. The ineptitude of Lee did make us look pretty foolish – the reason, many wished for a change forgetting who would be heading up the search. Of course, the media never picked up on that. They picked up that we weren’t happy w/ HWSNBN, but they were never able to capture the nuance of why. A certain AD’s handling of the controversey surrounding our program in the 2 years leading up to this convinced me we had a bureaucrat w/ limited vision and clumsy customer service/PR skills leading us. Even during last year’s meltdown, my position is that Lee Fowler should never, ever be allowed to hire another basketball coach – and that will not ever change.

Just to point out, I didn’t say in the main article Lowe’s job would be in danger. I did say that no matter what, Lee Fowler would not make a change but that there would be a loss of confidence by a number of people in the fanbase. Take a look at the post-game thread for the Davidson game again if you think I am making that up.

If that’s the case, no point in crying over spilt milk…happens to every coach / program…

Just out of curiousity, define “several years to come.”

  12. packalum44 12/15/2008 at 3:27 PM #

Is it just me or has our team not “run” any more than last year? I thought they emphasized a more up-tempo style during off season but I have not seen it (to be fair, I have only watched 1 game!). I do not think we have the personnel to run effectively and have been surprised that Lowe has mentioned we would run more…marketing tool to get fans in the stands???

What frustrates me is that we are so un-athletic. We do not create turnovers that lead to easy buckets. Moreover, our two freshmen do not seem very athletic either. Sure anything is step up from Horner or Gonzales or Costner or McCauley or Simon or Smith or Ferrgie…

    BTW, where is Johnny Thomas?

  13. choppack1 12/15/2008 at 3:36 PM #

packalum – I imagine Johnny Thomas is resting his knee. His injury was very serious and I’ll be surprised if he’s ever more than a reserve based solely on that injury.

I see where you are coming from on the frustration. Right now, we just don’t defend or rebound very well – and to me, that’s all that matters. I’d like us to run, but I can stomach us playing a plodding half court game – I can’t stomach our defense and rebounding. We’ll see though – the season is long and it’s just started. If we keep on at least trying, I’ll take that as progress on all fronts.

  14. Noah 12/15/2008 at 3:37 PM #

Moreover, our two freshmen do not seem very athletic either.

This is why the decision to take Gonzalez over Warren is more than just spilled milk. An ACC coach has to be able to seperate those who have the athleticism to play in the ACC and those who do not.

It should not have been very hard to look at people like Marques Johnson (and Bartosz Lewandowski) and see that they will NEVER be able to contribute at this level.

If you miss on a guy because you don’t think a 6-4 power forward will be able to contribute and it turns out that the 6-4 power forward grows into Charles Barkely, that’s fine. If you miss on a guy because you didn’t accurately judge his work ethic, his heart or his character, that’s fine too.

But if you can’t tell the difference between a guy who is athletic enough to score 20 ppg in SEC competition and a guy who isn’t athletic enough to play in the ACC…it’s more than spilled milk.

  15. VaWolf82 12/15/2008 at 3:39 PM #

if one is forced to build a program from the ground up,one of the firsst things you go get is someone to run your program a point guard!

Which is exactly what Sid did. You seem to be forgetting that alot of the top high school kids commit as a junior in high school after being courted for a year or two before that.

  16. Alpha Wolf 12/15/2008 at 3:54 PM #

^ True, and I remember that as being one of the expected problems for Sid when he was hired. It’s not like he was left with a John Wall type recruit that was a lifelong dyed in the wool Pack fan waiting to follow Atsur.

  17. packalum44 12/15/2008 at 3:59 PM #

“This is why the decision to take Gonzalez over Warren is more than just spilled milk. An ACC coach has to be able to seperate those who have the athleticism to play in the ACC and those who do not.”

Agree…let’s hope it was part of his learning curve!

“You seem to be forgetting that alot of the top high school kids commit as a junior in high school after being courted for a year or two before that.”

I am guilty of this! I do forget sometimes that a guy who had no college experience was forced to recruit against coaches who have been building relationships with kids for years.

  18. whitefang 12/15/2008 at 4:03 PM #

Noah – several is more than 2. like 3 at least. And having read your comments here, I think our feelings on Lowe’s hiring are very similar. But that is water under the bridge.

Alpha you are exactly right. YOU didn’t say that at all as read your commentary several times. My comments were directed to all of us who are frustrated with where we are. The point only was that we are gonna have to live with what we have for better or worse for the near future. So we better hope Sid is or can BECOME the leader that can make us relevant again if we want to have it happen anytime soon.

  19. tvp1 12/15/2008 at 4:03 PM #

My understanding is that we had grade concerns with Warren.

  20. Alpha Wolf 12/15/2008 at 4:03 PM #

^ Not only that, there is a gentleman’s agreement in CBB where coaches don’t continue to recruit players once they announce a commitment. The only one I know of that does is Jim Calhoun of UConn, someone I consider to be despicable for that and other reasons.

  21. 61Packer 12/15/2008 at 4:13 PM #

Theer isn’t any question to me about this team’s identity. It’s basically a re-run of last season.

Load up on easy wins in November and December against cupcake teams, and when ACC play starts, win about half of your home games and lose about two-thirds on the road. Strive for .500 in the conference, hope to get 18 or 19 wins, but expect less. Blame injuries. Continue to struggle at guard, but promise things will be better next season.

It’s been “next season” for years. We continue to see the same old, same old. Team defense is a fading memory, and fundamentals have been gone longer than that. Basically, nothing has changed.

The identity I’m searching for is that of this Wolfpack coaching staff. I’ve heard enough about 1983 and 1974. I’m more concerned with 2009. Those who think that all we need is to recruit talent are in a deeper funk than this program is.

  22. wufpup76 12/15/2008 at 4:18 PM #

“Is it just me or has our team not “run” any more than last year? I thought they emphasized a more up-tempo style during off season but I have not seen it (to be fair, I have only watched 1 game!). ”

I’ve been to all the home games – they have run when it has been available, which it hasn’t been available much … That said, it’s been more than last season when we never ran

It’s clear though that Sidney has given the green light to push when available … We don’t cause enough turnovers to really get out and go though, and at this point of the season we are a far better halfcourt team as opposed to a transition team

  23. bradleyb123 12/15/2008 at 4:33 PM #

“Not only that, there is a gentleman’s agreement in CBB where coaches don’t continue to recruit players once they announce a commitment.”

Is this not true for football? Isn’t there an NC State verbal commitment (Byrd, I think was his last name) that has recently received offers from both Wake Forest and Florida State?

Has anyone heard anything about him? I think he grew up a Florida State fan. This is probably a tough call for him.

  24. happypackdad 12/15/2008 at 4:47 PM #

I think Sid liked FD a lot & him getting hurt put us behind the 8ball having to start a true frosh last yr.

Thomas played decent minutes last game.

  25. packalum44 12/15/2008 at 4:50 PM #

^ I don’t have any insider information but I read an article in which he said he was torn because “every kid grows up a FL State fan in FL”

My guess is he ditches NC State and follows his dream. He’ll end up third string cornerback for a team loaded with athletes that perennially underachieves and we’ll forget we ever recruited him because TOB can coach a walk-on to perform better than Bowden can a 4-star recruit.

However, if he has good advisors around him they will point out the fact that TOB and staff are some of the finest coaches in the country and can develop his talent as far as his inherent abilities allow.
