ECU Will Not Be A Cupcake Game

Last year, one of the first real signs of the bad season to come for the Wolfpack hoops squad came when State visited Greenville for a rare road game against the East Carolina Pirates.  After that game, we said that State had

Rock Bottom. ECU Gets First Victory Against ACC Team; Lowe’s Honeymoon Over

Poor preparation. No defense. No rebounding. Poor coaching in a game that should have never been played. After compiling a 17-0 historical record over the Pirates, NC State loses the program’s first game in history against East Carolina. Prior to tonight, ECU was 0-57 against ACC opponents.

Unfortunately, the poor play was the first example of a pattern that repeated itself many times throughout the season, and State sat out the post-season.  Wednesday night, however, a chance for revenge and redemption will present itself in the RBC Center when the Pirates make a return trip to the Wolfpack’s home floor, and State will have a chance to erase bad memories from last year and also to measure itself against a program that’s clearly improving.  A quick look at the Pirates stats so far in their 8-1 start will tell you a lot:

  • Brock  Young is number two in the nation in assists with 8.1 APG
  • James Legan is tied for 9th in 3-point shooting percentage at 47.1%
  • Scoring Offense is ranked 29th with 80.8 PPG
  • Field Goal Percentage is ranked 34th at 47.3% PG
  • Three Point Percentage is ranked 15th at 35.5% PG
  • Free Throw Percentage is ranked 64th at 70.7% (#1 in this stat is Marquette, hitting 71.4%)
  • Rebounding is ranked at 72nd,  averaging 38 RPG
    (stats all from ESPN.com)

In short, despite the fact that it is still December and that ECU has yet to play a quality opponent even of NC State’s level, they will come to Raleigh confident and with a good squad that will not only present a challenge to the Pack but also beat them for the second year in a row if State comes out and lollygags its way through the contest like they did last year in Greenville.

A loss would be a devastating blow to NC State in the early part of the year.  With all due respect to the Pirates, State should not lose to ECU in any year.  The two programs exist on different planes of the basketball world, and the history of the glory that is Pirate basketball would be a short read indeed.  They are not one of the powerhouses of their own conference, nor are they a regular invitee to the NCAA tournament.  State, on the other hand, is a Big Four team with a rich and glorious past and a team that hopes to compete for an automatic bid to the Big Dance based upon its upcoming conference play.  A loss to ECU would be as indicative of the year to come this year as it was last, and if the Wolfpack cannot handle the Pirates at home then it will be difficult to muster up any confidence at all for the games to come after New Year’s.

Buttpacker, you aren’t the only one who has lost enthusiasm about basketball, judging by the steady downward trend in attendence (butts in seats, not tickets sold) for hoops. When was the last time anyone went to a game other than UNC at the RBC Center in which you had to look carefully to find an empty seat?

Part of the problem is the pathetic out of conference scheduling in basketball, a trend that started with Sendek, and now has apparently intensified with Lowe in what I have to believe is a concerted effort by he and Fowler to keep the wolves at bay until Lowe can land the equivalent of Coach K’s 1986 Senior class that laid the foundation for his career at Duke (I’m not holding my breath on that happening). There are virtually no games prior to January that anyone cares about seeing.

I’m a seat rights holder for football only, and though I doubted that decision in Amato’s last year, I now feel like I made a good decision in not also springing for basketball seats. Any game I want to see (not many these days) I can readily buy a ticket for below face value outside the arena. I understand and empathize with the deep frustration owners of permanent seat rights for basketball must feel right now…

Sure we “could” lose this game, but I don’t have that fear. I think we win this one by 10+ points. Sorry, I won’t give in to the fear until there is good reason for it. This is not last year. We’re a better team, even without Hickson. And for ECU to win last year, they had a guy that flat couldn’t miss. No one will have that kind of shooting night again this year.

Brock Young versus Javi Gonzalez will be interesting. Neither guard is particularly physically gifted, but Young is having a fantastic season so far.

If Young schools Javi, I’ll really be sad because Young played HS ball in Raleigh and when we needed a PG, we just let Young slip away.

Hope Fells is healthy and plays because we are really thin at SF already and don’t have a good back up, if he’s not healthy.

Guys, stop being so melo-dramatic. We win this game. What perturbs me more than anything is we don’t have any friggin games on TV. T

I agree, packalum44 (see my previous “no fear” post). Although, never in 100 years did I think we would lose to ECU last year. Still, I think we avenge that loss tomorrow night with a 10+ point win.

    “We win this game. ”

I’m not that confident. We’re turnover prone and a so-so rebounding team.

ECU’s biggest strenght is their perimeter game. Our perimeter defense is weak.

Hope we win, but I remember us coming pretty close to losing, in Raleigh, a couple of years ago to ECU. They’ll be totally amped up for this game.

This Wolfpack team hasn’t earned that kind of confidence from me, to assume we win this game.

Tonight at 9:30 on ESPN Marquette and Tennessee do battle. Great opportunity to see what kind of team the Golden Eagles have. They come in ranked #23.

this is very sad, where’s the faith? This should be a stomping if Degand & Fells play.

“this is very sad, where’s the faith? This should be a stomping if Degand & Fells play.” – happypackdad

    I have faith!!!

It’s just that, after last year, this team has shown it can lose to just about any team on any given night. Combine that with the fact that (as much as it pains me to say this) ECU has a pretty decent basketball team this year, and this game is one that we COULD lose.

I don’t believe we will. But we can’t sleepwalk and win this game. We better show up to play.

I’m not at all confident that Degand and Fells are going to play though. Fells and Smith still aren’t practicing and a decision still hasn’t been made on Degand (supposedly) for breaking team rules.

I wonder what rule he could have broken to be benched for 2 games…

So far the Golden Eagles have looked overrated and beatable, from what I’ve seen … That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not good or State can beat them, but I haven’t seen them play at a very high level as of yet this season … That could of course change tonight … we’ll see!

    Re: Marquette – Tennessee

Tenn looked awful in those first five minutes … taking some terrible shots

Cupcake? We will not have a cupcake game ,we will be lucky to get a W .

ECU is better this year than last year- from top to bottom. Experienced, quick good deadly shooters from perimeter. Significantly more talented in the paint (though lacking depth inside).
That being said… State is better this year (forget Hickson- bad chemistry). This game is being playing in RBC not Minges and they haven’t played an opponent the caliber of NC State.
If they exploit Pack’s permimeter shortcomings this is going to be a ballgame. If State adequately defends the wing with bigger guys (stay with EC’s shooters through screens) and– pounds it inside on offense– this will not be a game and State wins by 14.
Brock Young matchup (ECU point guard) in the first half will give a early indication how this thing is going to go.

With Sid’s new up-tempo style??? And the new braintrust assiting, after the off-season shakeup, Sid all will be fine! Oh it did not happen? Never mind . Can’t wait till the summer and TOB and the boy’s.

  17. vtpackfan 12/17/2008 at 6:26 PM #

New braintrust? What are you comin’ with here, actually on second thought don’t bother.

Did anyone get a load of Bomani roll call the Sid Lowe hater’s at lunch today? He was preaching the gospel of he’s (which always means we’ve to bomani) see enough conclude that Lowe can’t hack it. Seriously now, that was where he started and ended the whole thing.

The only crappies he got to bite brought up you know who …oh…wait..wait for it. Sad.

Completely sad that we are a former national champ in modern day basketball and we can’t even have a single radio station, not even an AM one, to show any effort.

  18. kyjelly 12/17/2008 at 8:06 PM #

vtpackfan-New braintrust was supposed to occur with a staff shakeup among the asst coaches!

Based on the pregame comments, I would assume that there are several pleasantly surprised people this morning.

Of course I know there will be a group that state: It’s ECU, we’re supposed to beat them. Don’t get excited about beating ECU.

While that’s somewhat true, I think winning by double digits last night (minus Fells and Degand still limited) is a definite improvement. It’s also a glimmer of hope that we can beat a team with quality guards and Costner can continue to build back to a scoring machine.
