Curry 32-Footer Sinks Pack

WRAL Sports: Curry Drops 44 Points, Davidson 72 – NC State 67

Overall, I was really pleased with State’s performance and Sid’s gameplan. Without Curry’s prayer, State would have had the ball at the end shooting for the win (with OT as worst-case scenario). The effort was there, and the defense was much better. Until the last 8 minutes, the rebounding was solid (thus my only critique – would have liked to see more of Tracy Smith in the second half). Other thoughts:

– If Johnny Thomas was healthy, I’d like to see Courtney Fells thrown off the team. Kudos to Sid for benching him for most of the second half, even with 11 seconds left and State down three. What a waste. He should watch Trevor Ferguson out there busting his ass and hang his head in shame. NOTE: Radio guys are claiming Fells hurt his shoulder during the game. If that were true, it still doesn’t explain how he started the game in a fog. I also never saw him getting treatment (on the bench or going to locker room). Sorry, don’t buy it.

– The chip is back on Costner’s shoulder, and I mean that in a good way.

– CJ Williams is much better than I expected. Ladies and gentleman, meet your “glue guy.”

– NC State can be a middle-of-the-pack ACC team. If we had just one healthy PG that didn’t suck out loud, we could contend for an NCAA berth.

– I don’t think Farnold Degand is ever going to be right again. And without his lateral quickness, he can’t contribute at all. Very sad.

– Davidson sure has some douchebag fans, chanting for the asshole who got ejected after almost decapitating Trevor.

– I went a little nuys yelling at the TV at the end. Mike Gminski is such a dumbass, noting “The Davidson people don’t consider this an upset!” Well, no shit, Sherlock. Davidson made the Elite Eight last year, and return the best player in college basketball. NC State finished dead last in the ACC, and lost it’s best player. The game is played in Charlotte. Only a complete fucking moron would have considered it anything other than a huge upset if NC State had won the game!

“IMO Rebounding is not all desire and fundamentals. Oh, it might be in an intramurual game where 1 in 10 can dunk. A man’s body, a wide wingspan and a 42 inch vertical jump trumps desire and boxing out. Think not? Ask a 6′-6″ white boy who could not dunk a ef-ing basketball and he will tell you differently.”

So what you’re saying is that Davidson just has better athletes than we do? I’m sorry, I just don’t buy it – at best, our guys should be able to hold their own on the boards w/ a traditional power like Davidson.

I see your point – but rebounding is about fundamentals. You’re right that athleticism does factor, but so do fundamentals. I think our players are athletic enough to hold their own on the boards – the big question is – do they use the proper technique and have the proper desire to do it? The best rebounders aren’t just athletic freaks – they desire the ball and they have good technique.

At this level, it’s simple for NC State – if every time a shot goes up our guys are looking for someone box out and doing it properly – we’ll be fine on the boards. If we don’t, we continue to get beaten on the boards by teams who want the ball more.

66pack – That’s a good point. In spite of that, he could still succeed – but if you like at the results ON THE COURT the last 2 years and for our first big test…well, let’s just fire the AD because he shouldn’t be allowed to make another big decision for NC State.

The rebounding was atrocious but I’m very concerned with the TO’s and PG play. Javi needs to know where to go with the ball, right now he is just content with giving it away to the path of least resistance (or just giving it away).

W/O a pg who is determined to feed and refeed the post in this offense we will be lucky to stay close with anyone. Let Costner and McAuley assist Trevor and Co.for 3 point looks, not our PG.

I thought Javi cost us a good chance to stop the excitment of the 32 ft jumper on the other end when he brought the ball up court and immediately spotted CJ WIlliams on the wing. Javi has got to know the situation calls for a regroup and set play to get it down low. You rush it and throw it off to a true frosh W who is wide open and ofcourse he’s probably going to heave it up. He just watched Curry stick one in his eye so you know he wanted to get some.

If Javi shows a bit of the same symptoms after the Marqueete game then I hope Lowe shows some urgency to get Mays as ready as possible before the ACC’s. He is not very athletic but he will take his basketball IQ and push it to his experience level, IMO.

Some of you guys are ridiculous and should turn in your “fan” cards. hard to believe you call yourselves fans of your program with some of the things written above.

As a State Fan throughout my childhood and now as a Davidson Alum, I thought that was an entertaining game both because of the result and because of the signs of life I saw in the State program.

You didn’t lose to some two bit no account basketball team. Davidson is very good. Very. Freaking. Good. With Curry, they are outstanding. Ask Oklahoma, who had to have Blake Griffin go nuts to beat us by 4 on their home floor.

Given that you have no point guard of any evident ability, I thought Lowe put together a good game plan, and had a few plays gone the other way, you likely would have beaten us.

Lowe chose one of the two unpalatable alternatives when playing the Wildcats. You can throw two or three guys at Curry and lose. Or you can guard him one on one and lose.

A few posts on this thread demand a response.

Upthread someone commented that Curry doesn’t pass. Not true. Curry works for the best shot. It’s often his. But you usually will not see Curry take an unwarranted shot. He is an exceptional passer. He just happens to be an even better shooter. But he is averaging over 6 assists a game.

Someone else, as a way of belittling Costner and McCauley’s play, stated that Davidson has two front court players who wouldn’t sniff the floor in the ACC. I beg to differ. Lovedale would play just about anywhere, except UNC this season. And he would come off the bench there. That kid can flat out play, and he is all upside, given that he never played hoops until he was 15.

Ben Allison played out of his mind on Saturday. But he’s 6’9 and athletic and has a sweet jump shot. He’s only a redshirt freshman. By the time he graduates, you’ll be wishing he was on NCSU.

And Rossiter may not be a superstar, but he’s a worthy successor to Sander, who was a warrior in the run to the elite Eight last year.

Davidson is not as good a they were in March of last year. But they are better than they were the last time we played you at this part of the season. We’re not a one man team, since last game Curry scored 0 and we still won by 30. And come March, nobody is going to want to play us.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised with your in-league record this year. Lowe deserves more than three years to please your ridiculously over-demanding “fan” base. He’s a good man and a good recruiter, and I see improvement in that team.

NIT this yr IMO. Back to the NCAAs the next & forever more! Sid hasn’t had a PG since he’s been here. Engin – hurt, Farnold – hurt. Javi & Mayes will be good with another yr.

  6. drfranklives 12/08/2008 at 12:49 PM #

Oh, and the “jerk” who nearly decapitated your player was not trying to hurt him. Bad foul. Probably an intentional foul. But given that your guy carried the ball on the play, and traveled to boot, and then held the ball low, I think the hit to the head was unintenional and a result of Max trying to react to the screwed up timing on the shot. Max is not an asshole. He’s a great kid and he plays 100% every second he’s on the floor. That we won that game without him is very impressive, given how crucial he is to our defensive effort.

  7. primacyone 12/08/2008 at 2:33 PM #

We played a good game. I thought going into the game we would lose by 15-20.

The two missed free throws on the 1 and 1’s at the end of the game is what cost us the game. We make those we win. With the misses, it was like two turnovers with little to no time run off during the posesion.

I am really suprised with all the negativty. We played well. We lead most of the game. Those two free throw misses and the despartion heave by Curry cause us to lose the game.

Davidson played as well as they could possbily play and we played right with them. I thought it was a very good performance on our end. I liked the rotation.

Fells went to the locker room at about the 12 minute mark in the first half, came out and sat on the bench with ice on his shoulder for a good 3-4 minutes. How any of you basketball experts missed that, I don’t know. Maybe you became a pack fan sometime during the Sendeck years, and that is all you know.

I was away from the computer all weekend, and was shocked when I opened up this thread. I saw positive progress, you guys saw chit. It now seems almost amazing that TOB still has a job after a 2-6 start.

  8. Wolf74 12/08/2008 at 3:08 PM #

I went to the game and have to say I was disappointed in the game plan, and also disappointed in fan support.

First the fan support. It appeared to me that Davidson, a school of almost 1500 had a significant edge in fan support. That was not the case years ago (when NCSU meant something to the college basketball world) when it was almost like a home game in Charlotte. There were thousands of empty seats.

Not trying something special to defend Curry was a poor decision. The rest of the Davidson team is no where near as good as last season. Should have made the rest of the team beat us. Should have prepared the team to provide help defense or try a box & 1. Anything. I also saw too many open lanes to the basket that didn’t close when Curry drove. Rebounding was weak with too many tapouts to waiting Davidson guards. I don’t know where ours were but they weren’t shadowing Curry as many times the tap outs were directly to him.

This was not a lack of effort. I, and the people I was with, thought our team played with intensity. They, overall, are just not good shooters and not overly athletic. But we were better than Davidson. We should have but didn’t appear to be prepared for a game plan that was set up to showcase one player.

This game made me very concerned about next years team when Fells, McCauley and probably Costner leave unless we get Wall & Favors or Cousins to go with the other recruits & Smith (who I didn’t understand not playing anymore than he did).

“I am really suprised with all the negativty. We played well. We lead most of the game”

The battle cry of NCSU under Fowler.

  10. primacyone 12/08/2008 at 4:17 PM #

^LOL. Good one Rick. So true. We should have won but didn’t. I’ll give you that one. That is the bottom line.

Maybe I was just happy to see a better Team than last year with some good contributions by the Freshmen.

  11. pakfanistan 12/08/2008 at 5:52 PM #

    Whatever…

Based on what I’ve seen this season compared to what I saw last season, this is a better team in almost every respect. Nothing that happened in this game changes my opinion on that.

This loss was disappointing, no doubt, but you can point to probably 20 things and say, “this cost us the game”.

Curry had 44 pts. That cost us the game.
Fells only had 4 points. That cost us the game.
Javi had 7 turnovers. That cost us the game.
We were out rebounded in the last few minutes. That cost us the game.
Curry hit a clutch 3 to put them up at the end. That cost us the game.
Our offense broke down in the last two minutes. That cost us the game.
Our defense broke down in the last two minutes. That cost us the game.
We missed some clutch free throws. That cost us the game.

The fact is, if any one of those things happens differently, we win and the rest of it doesn’t matter.

The funny part is, people are imploding because we had a chance to win and didn’t. That’s like….100% better than what we had last year.

Look at the bright side, Costner played like Costner should, McCauley is back. Williams played well for a frosh. Intensity is up across the board.

If things keep progressing the way they are we’ll be a decent team by the end of the year.

Also, it looks like our 2010 pg, Harrow, is turning into a stud.

    http://tinyurl.com/56fplf

“On the other hand Harrow showed exactly why Goydish called him ‘one of the best in Georgia”. Harrow went on to score 30 points and had so many steals that I believe the JCPD is charging him with some sort of crime. His fluid shot, ball handling and quick moves captured the attention of everyone in the building, especially the Toppers Head Coach Ken Cutlip.

“Number 12 (Harrow), what a little waterbug,” said Cutlip, “he’s as quick as I’ve seen; I don’t know anybody that would want to bring the ball up against him.”

    Also check out http://tinyurl.com/59hs3p

“North Carolina State commitment Ryan Harrow scored 43 points to lead Walton. “

No, the funny part is, we beat Davidson last year when they were a hell lot better than they are this year…

    Nobody’s imploding.

  13. pakfanistan 12/09/2008 at 11:54 AM #

We were a hell of a lot more talented at that point last year too.

The Davidson game was before Degand was hurt and the rest of the team got butt hurt.

  14. Rick 12/09/2008 at 2:41 PM #

“No, the funny part is, we beat Davidson last year when they were a hell lot better than they are this year”

And yet I keep hearing how much better we are this year.

  15. cowdog 12/09/2008 at 3:19 PM #

One thing is for sure. We have 3 “cupcakes?”in a row before we have the next opportunity to show how much we’ve “improved.”
After Marquette we are graced with 2 more dogs before we a get a really good venue for showcasing the new improved look in Florida.
2 chances in 7 to win a meaningful OOC game…great scheduling I might add.

  16. pakfanistan 12/09/2008 at 3:21 PM #

    Rick,

I think from an intensity and execution standpoint we are a lot better this year.

If you think about it, we replaced Grant, who showed up pretty much every night to play, with Fells and Harris, and replaced Fells with Williams and Ferguson. Also, we replaced Degand and Javi with Javi and Mays……………….

So which team, personnel wise, would you rather have?

    Degand
    Fells
    Grant
    Costner
    McCauley/(Hickson)

    or

    Javi
    Williams
    Fells
    Costner
    McCauley

We’ve taken two steps back at the guard positions and broke even at the other three. It doesn’t matter how hard these guys play, they’re not going to match the potential of last years team.

I can’t speak for anybody else, but for myself, I want a team that maximizes their potential. Being an awesome team that wins championships will be a result of maximizing potential. So whereas last years team was predicted 3rd and finished last, I think this years team that is predicted next to last can finish somewhere between 6 and 9, and is still on course to do that.

  17. jsmithpack14 12/09/2008 at 6:01 PM #

To be honest I was on the bangwagon two years ago with Lowe, but it quickly went away. He needs to get into the kids faces and tell them to get into the game and rebound. We have the potential to be a 4th or 5th team in the ACC, if we try. Davidson wanted the game more. Sidney says he wants to push the ball and rebound. The entire second half i saw nothing of that….

  18. Rick 12/10/2008 at 8:23 AM #

WV completely destroyed Davidson on the boards. With their starting back court out they almost beat Davidson.
WV was voted number 9 on the Big East.
Yeah we have improved alot (rolling eyes).

  19. pakfanistan 12/10/2008 at 9:51 AM #

(rolling eyes) The key word in your post is “almost”. (rolling eyes)

(rolling eyes) So what difference does it make? (rolling eyes)

(rolling eyes) We held Davidson to their lowest shooting percentage of the year and lowest 3pt. shot total of the year. (rolling eyes)

  20. Rick 12/10/2008 at 1:45 PM #

“The key word in your post is “almost”. ”

Yes that is the word I have been hearing about our basketball program for years. We are almost there, just give it some time.

  21. pakfanistan 12/10/2008 at 2:34 PM #

If you’ve got the name of a coach who could fix it all tomorrow, I would love to hear it.

We’ve been assy to mediocre for 18 years, what’s another two?

  22. Rick 12/10/2008 at 2:56 PM #

“If you’ve got the name of a coach who could fix it all tomorrow, I would love to hear it.”

I am not sure anyone can make us a winner anymore.

  23. redfred2 12/10/2008 at 11:20 PM #

“I am not sure anyone can make us a winner anymore.”

Rick, my boy, that all depends on your definition of “winner”. Sidney Lowe hasn’t done too much thus far, but if he can schedule correctly and get enough cupcakes to create a false perception, then he could possibly…well…get us back to our previous level of semi-successful mediocrity.

That’s one goal, and it would admittedly quieten the “5 in a row” crowd, but as far as getting us back to REALLY being legit for REAL, now that is a whole different story/level altogether.
