BJD’s Basketball Program Thoughts (UPDATE: Confirmed – Ferguson Out 3-6 Weeks)

First, stop watching this team as if had (or has) a chance to be good. It doesn’t. Whatever long-shot chance NC State ever had went down the drain when we first saw Farnold’s knee in action (he simply can’t cut on it playing defense). Keep in mind that our best guard, by far, is Trevor Ferguson. How can a team be good when that is the case? Depressingly, we received an e-mail last night noting that Trevor broke his arm or wrist during the Marquette game (kudos to him for finishing). UPDATE: Per the N&O’s “ACC Now” blog, Ferguson has a broken bone in his non-shooting hand, and will be out 3-6 weeks. Shit.

So, what do you look for this year? Baby steps. I see them. For the most part, State plays hard for 40 minutes (don’t confuse that with playing well or playing smart). The gameplans make sense, at least to me. There’s just not much we can do when the opposition makes adjustments. Subjectively, I don’t hate watching this team play, and am not embarrassed that they wear the uniform of my alma mater. Couldn’t say that last year.

Is this progress? I think so. We haven’t lost to any crap teams, unlike last year (ECU, New Orleans). We haven’t mailed it in. There’s just no way to do much more than that with the personnel currently in place.

Which leads me to 2009-10. This is when we need to see a great leap forward. We will have much better players in place, and at least one plus player at the guard position (Lorenzo Brown). If Lowe’s gameplans are in fact good, and he’s learned how to reach and motivate college players, then the 2009-10 will win some games, and make the NCAA tournament. Until then, we have to watch games from a different point of view. Take a Xanax if you need one.

“but I doubt that NC state would have actually landed Wright regardless of the situation’

wrong. Wright was coming to NCSU to play for Herb. He also led the current staff to believe he was still committed to NCSU up until the last minute when he switched to GTown.
Herb did NOT leave because he saw a bad season coming. Those who think so have no idea of what’s going on.
The staff has been in contact with Cousins for a while. Either him or Favors would be very nice with Wall.

Gene – Do you really think that’s why Cousins is looking at us? I think that’s a little bit of a stretch. Part of me thinks that maybe others w/ different interest are putting Cousins up to this.

If memory serves correct, there’s a certain type of LOI that a player can sign which basically protects his interest should the coach be fired. I’ve heard that the infamous class of Hodge, Powell, Watkins, Collins, and Evtimov had at least 2 of these guys signing this, making it a dicey move to let HWSBN go unless we wanted to lose a certain McD AA.

Still, I think that we could certainly could have used the bodies of Werner and Davis that we did have wrapped up the last TWO years rather than being thankful they didn’t come because it gives us a “shot” at a player like Cousins. Funny, the prescence of Costner and McCauley didn’t stop Hickson from coming here.

hpd – I don’t think we can say whether or not Wright would have come no matter who the coach was. There were rumors he was getting cold feet on his commitment when HWSBN was our head coach. Did the coaching change hurt these chances – probably – but this isn’t a case where we got as far as an LOI w/ the player and he asked out after the coaching change.

“Gene – Do you really think that’s why Cousins is looking at us? ”

I have no factual basis to know why he’s considering us. If I’m cooking up conspiracy theories as to why some kid from Alabama is giving us serious consideration, I think the fact we let people out of their LOI’s may be a factor, since it’s a point of concern for him and caused him to not sign with UAB in April.

Not arguing that it would’ve been nice to have Werner and Davis in the line up the past couple of years, but the decision to let them out of their LOI’s may not be as negative as it has been protrayed by some. The overall impact on the program, in the long run, may have been better served by letting them out of their LOI’s.

It’s not a rumor that Wright led the current staff to believe that he was committing to NCSU. Him deciding at the last minute to go to GTown really put our program behind. That + Degand’s injuries really have put Sid’s program behind. His O really depends on a good PG which he hasn’t had…….. yet. That position will improve each season, therefore I see a team improving each season.

happypackdad-Your information always intrigues me and on some level, I’m led to believe that you have to remain some what cagey on what you do and don’t disclose-but since you got our wolf ears perked, could you elaborate on some things. My memory may be foggy at this point but wasn’t there a pretty strong sense that Wright was leaning pretty heavily towards George Town once Herb left hence Lowe basically having to re-recruit him? And where do you get your recruiting info? Just curious.

Ooops! I meant-once HWSNBM left. Curses!

  8. happypackdad 12/29/2008 at 2:55 PM #

Once Herb left, Wright did start leaning towards GTown. When Larry & Sid got hired, we tried to get him to re-commit. Can’t elaborate, but Wright did give the staff a strong indication that he was going to re-commit.
    Rather not say.

hpd – I certainly don’t dispute that he told us he was coming. I am just saying that there was a rumor even before Sendek left, that Wright’s committment wasn’t firm.

It came from a pretty well-connected source, BUT (who knows???), I was told that Lowe was very excited and going to announce Wright’s re-commitment on Team Day, but that plan got blown out of the water by a late phone call on the very night before.
