BJD’s Basketball Program Thoughts (UPDATE: Confirmed – Ferguson Out 3-6 Weeks)

First, stop watching this team as if had (or has) a chance to be good. It doesn’t. Whatever long-shot chance NC State ever had went down the drain when we first saw Farnold’s knee in action (he simply can’t cut on it playing defense). Keep in mind that our best guard, by far, is Trevor Ferguson. How can a team be good when that is the case? Depressingly, we received an e-mail last night noting that Trevor broke his arm or wrist during the Marquette game (kudos to him for finishing). UPDATE: Per the N&O’s “ACC Now” blog, Ferguson has a broken bone in his non-shooting hand, and will be out 3-6 weeks. Shit.

So, what do you look for this year? Baby steps. I see them. For the most part, State plays hard for 40 minutes (don’t confuse that with playing well or playing smart). The gameplans make sense, at least to me. There’s just not much we can do when the opposition makes adjustments. Subjectively, I don’t hate watching this team play, and am not embarrassed that they wear the uniform of my alma mater. Couldn’t say that last year.

Is this progress? I think so. We haven’t lost to any crap teams, unlike last year (ECU, New Orleans). We haven’t mailed it in. There’s just no way to do much more than that with the personnel currently in place.

Which leads me to 2009-10. This is when we need to see a great leap forward. We will have much better players in place, and at least one plus player at the guard position (Lorenzo Brown). If Lowe’s gameplans are in fact good, and he’s learned how to reach and motivate college players, then the 2009-10 will win some games, and make the NCAA tournament. Until then, we have to watch games from a different point of view. Take a Xanax if you need one.

    Chop,

I appreciate your view of the games coming up and what you see is to be decided by those games. Deeper than I want to go with my 6th grade mind. 😉

Were this team playing at it’s best, then how we did against Marquette and Davidson would be a more telling couple of games. That we did not play our best tells me there is room for improvement.

IMO Talent is talent and there is not much that can be done to eliminate the gaps between our talent and teams with more raw talent. Recruiting is the only sure cure for lack of talent. That being said, mistakes can be corrected without talent being the deciding factor. At this point in Sid’s tenure as our coach, I have no certainty that Sid, i.e., himself and his staff, can coach — coach meaning teach. Mistake correction, fundamentals, mental toughness, etc., I believe, are things that can be coached. Drills can be designed, players can be taught, nurtured, cajoled, etc.

I don’t put as much stock in how a team played 2 years ago as you and some others do. Their playing badly or playing well then is IMO not a portent of how they are going to play now. If it were, the gamblers would never lose.

Sid’s high water mark was his first year’s run in the ACC tournament. OMG I thought we had struck paydirt with Sid. Last year and the sorry state of affairs that had nothing to do with talent and everything to do with his letting the team attitude, spirit, etc., go to hell in a hand basket was a huge red flag for me. Nothing to do but wait and see what he was going to do with it. And I don’t mean wait and see like WTNY.

Remembering Everett Case, I know that Coach Case never, ever used a basketball game to see how much he could beat another team. My earliest memories of coaching was Case using lessor games to develop his team, not to blow up his ego. Norm Sloan was a product of Coach Case and the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. My mind is what it used to be as far as memory is concerned and now I can’t remember how much if at all Sid was influenced by Coach Sloan. I am sure he is influenced by Coach V.

Coach Case was interested in winning championships, not impressing people with how much he could win games by. I can’t even estimate how many mediocre teams ALMOST beat State in the opening rounds of tournemants under Coach Case. Being a product of this lineage, I have to wonder if Sid is building something or trying to accomplish something I am not privvy to.

These are the times I think it bes I remain silent and have people wonder if I’m ignorant about what it is to coach basketball instead of expressing my opinions and removing all doubt. 😉

    Happy New Year!

It was pretty cool; today I was down at The Fitness Center At Birkdale in Huntersville, NC and saw Rodney Monroe. I went up to him, shook his hand and said hello… really nice guy.

This is not really related to anything here but I just thought I’d mention it.

  7. cowdog 12/26/2008 at 5:34 PM #

Grey, just went back to the old post.

The ….”hardly knew you” thing was in reference to your disappearing missive when our boys did this upgrade. You know,” WTF? ”

I’m hung up on BB in SF, please excuse me, as well as the rest of you guys for this personal moment with Greywolf. I believe that most of us know each other in some form or fashion inside of the… what is it these days? 2 degress of separation?

Anyway, if you hear from J or L, give ’em my handle and we’ll talk later.

    Timeout Grey, is BB Butch?

    Cowdog,
Exactly. Butch and Jimmy frequently alternated semesters working for me. One would work while the other went to school. Louanne worked for me some as well.

You weren’t FUBAR by any chance?

  10. cowdog 12/26/2008 at 9:20 PM #

FUBAR. Yep, under cover considering I had lettered in football!

When I gave up my schol to sign with the Phillies, I had to do something in the off season while changing majors every freaking week back here.

If you are P, I worked for you too. ( Fixtures? )

Dog: Good analysis, but I’m not sure I agree with where you’ve slotted Chris Wright. He was an 07 recruit, not an 06 recruit.
    http://duke.scout.com/a.z?s=167&p=8&c=1&nid=1573138

Herb had Werner, Davis and Horner signed for 06. For reference, here’s Horner’s profile: http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1896517

Wright and McMillian were our verbals for 07, but I doubt that NC state would have actually landed Wright regardless of the situation. If Wright really wanted to play for HWSNBN, he’d have followed him to ASU like McMillian did. He didn’t and instead signed with Georgetown. I think Georgetown ultimately had too much momentum at the time.

There’s some blame to go around and definitely some to be laid at the feet of Fowler. At the same time, the only real recruit that I felt we lost was Werner as Davis didn’t pan out to much at Seton Hall and ultimately ended up transfering to Loyola Marymount.

No matter how you slice it, NC State was coming into some tough times. Of the players that you highlighted who would be starting this year, none of them had any real experience prior to SL showing up. They were going to be green regardless of who the coach was. Brackman wasn’t going to stay, nor was Simmons. We had a line up that basically consisted of Atsur and a bunch of forwards, which was EXACTLY the flawed vision that HWSNBN recruited to.

HWSNBN knew this and high tailed it to the desert while the getting was good. I can’t say that I blame him, but we need to be honest that our basketball program was not exactly on solid ground. We’re sadly now paying for his critically flawed strategy.

Just for the record…Demarcus Cousins has de-committed and is now officially interested in us, according to ESPN (I also recently wrote that rivals and scout both show him having interest in us). That gives us a chance at the number 1 C, PF, and PG, with a signed top 10 combo guard, top 10-15 PF and a top 20 SG. Along with us, Cousins is considering Memphis, Texas, Kentucky, Washington and Louisville. According to a blog by Washington fans, Washington is full on scholarships. I’ve also heard that Memphis is full, and that’s why John Wall has yet to sign with them (this was a story on ESPN right after they signed Xavier Henry). This could put us in the top 3 for all of these guys… I don’t care what you say, it’s exciting.

Oh, and I know Sidney has already been at one of his games this year, so I’m assuming we’ve been in contact, and obviously are interested in him. I would assume a scholly has been offered.

    Cowdog,
This is too much. I’m P alright.
You guys were FU but not BAR. LOL

  14. Afterglow 12/27/2008 at 5:28 AM #

P? FU? BAR? I’m confused. Another drink please?

    Anyway…

It will be interesting (perhaps scary) to see what happens in the absence of Ferguson. I’m thinking Fells needs to step up in a big way but if history is any indication, we may be in for a long ride.

My hope is that Fells breaks out although I’ve been hoping that for quite some time. I think the less he tries to do (meaning not trying to do too much) the better. It’s also quite possible he doesn’t give a damn what I think.

Anyway, gotta go. I have a flight to catch back to Denver.

    Greywolf,

Before we’re flagged 15 yrds and removed for flagrant abuse of a blog, I’m gonna ask, with your permission, the admin to forward my E mail addy to you. Would like to talk.

Thanks, all you out there for not jumping us. Ever since I found this sight, I knew that this bunch had alot more in common than dedication to Pack athletics…only stands to figure.

The question: Is our basketball program FUBAR?

Cowdog, I tried to do the exact same thing, but couldn’t get in contact with SFN for your email. Have you seen http://www.appleblossom.biz? Very interesting and informative. Might have an email address you would be interested in.

The cryptic nature led me to believe that this was a conversation about something other than our basketball program.

The question: Is our basketball program FUBAR?

My insanity runs deep as a Pack fan.

As it’s quite possible I may be drinking a Kool-Aid of a different flavor, I for one do not believe that our program is FUBAR. I think that inevitably, someone is going to step up and make a difference.

It’s unfortunate that Ferguson is out and as important as I think he is; I don’t think he was the glue. Nor do I believe that the season hinged on his play. With that said, I also believe that with in the deep recesses of the beleaguered Pack basketball fan, a lot have trouble thinking that anything other than failure can happen-and that when it comes down to it, if the score is tied with ten ticks on the clock and the ball in our possession, that a lot believe that our fate ultimately lies in malfunction. That may be where my insanity runs deep, because I do believe in those situations.

I fully understand why some may feel that way and don’t for a second blame them but this is what I know; we have what we have in personnel and nothing is going to change that for THIS season. The best we do is hope. I also know that in dire situations, people step up. After all, if every year I thought that the light at the end of the tunnel was nothing other than a train wreck, I’d become a fan of another color (not blue).

Like I said, my insanity runs deep as a Pack fan; I always see the light.

    Afterglow,
Cowdog and I both were keeping our off-thread comments brief. We’d like to somehow meet up to revisit our past relationship. I apologize for pulling you in. The FUBAR comment I made was more a throw-away joke than a real question. I’m with you.

  21. Afterglow 12/28/2008 at 11:42 PM #

    lol.
I kind of figured. No worries either way.

  22. choppack1 12/29/2008 at 9:30 AM #

afterglow – I’m w/ you on the hope aspect. I’ve seen some positive signs that this year may be different than the other 2 – we’ll see though. We have 2 demoralizing losses, but we aren’t into the meat of our season and we haven’t truly had our mettle tested…You know, when we’re down by 13 points w/ 10 minutes to go in the second half and you can stand and fight or put it into auto-pilot and be a good “loser”.

  23. redfred2 12/29/2008 at 10:40 AM #

I had a unc/fan/friend(???) call me wondering if I knew anybody who would want four tickets to the Loyola game tonight. I asked him to bring them by and I would make some calls. Anyway, when he brought them by I saw they were these huge laminated tickets, with a rule page involving behavior, what to wear even, and that they are COURTSIDE, right on the FRONT ROW, AND FREE for crying out loud!!! Now I’ve had some good seats in the RBC before, even sat with the good Chancellor Oblinger in the Wolf Den on occassion, but not courtside.

Just thought I’d rub that in a little before I hit the road to Raleigh.

    “Demarcus Cousins ”

Demarcus Cousins, if you read up on his recruitment to UAB, hesitated to sign an LOI, in the spring, unless UAB included language stating he could decommit if Mike Davis was no longer coaching. Cousins is (was?) worried about Davis bolting for a higher profile program.

Now that Davis is in coaching pergatory, with several talented at-risk players he recruited having academic problems and injuries and transfers of other players, he is trying to make do with six scholarship players. Davis may well be fighting for his job, rather than mulling over which offer to take.

Lee Fowler letting Werner, Horner and Davis opt out of their LOI’s may have gotten Cousins’ attention and given him a level of comfort with our program. It’s just speculation on my part, but the only reason Cousins’ never signed an LOI with UAB is because he wanted the ability to opt out if Davis was not the coach and UAB’s AD would not put it in writing, but only gave him a verbal “guarantee” on the point.

Second point is the potential turmoil Davis finds himself in – some of it his own making by recruiting players, who were not academically up to par and I think costing UAB some schollies in the process, as well as not having bodies to finish out the year – has killed UAB’s chance to land the most high profile recruit in their program’s history.

To summarize, by allowing the 2006 class to opt out of their LOI’s we may well land a much more talented player in 2009 than anyone who signed up to play for us in the ’06 class and by Lowe not having to fight for his job, we may well have the stability in our program top recruits want.

Just some food for thought for people like myself, who have been nothing but frustrated with NCSU basketball (was a freshman in 1992) and want change for changes sake, that not everything that has transpired has had a negative impact on the program.

Have fun Red, hopefully Loyola doesn’t press much or you’ll be in for a long night of dodging our errant passes.

Whats gives with the solid stance on tradition and excellance you share here and the image of you rubbing shoulders with the former CALS chancellor. The guy could probably go on on about artificial bovine imsenination…. but a question on athletics could go-

“Ehh, Coach Fowler is unavailable but I think Mary Anne Foxes’ phone number in still in my Roledex. She probably knows more about the sports thing then I do.”
