wufpup76 Recaps Exhibition Opener

I carved this completely out of the comments section – I offer wufpup76 a well-earned hat tip:

Just got back from the game … Here is my postgame report –

– Obviously, the big news of the night is the injury to Johnny Thomas, which is very unfortunate … I did’nt see it happen (obscured view), but he was definitely in some pain … He was part of the second unit in the rotation and prior to the injury he looked like he had full range of mobility and had a nice athletic slam that said “my knee is ok” … I really hope the injury isn’t too bad for Johnny as he has had enough injuries already; if he’s healthy, he has the potential to be a major contributor

– Starting five consisted of Gonzalez, C.J. Williams, Fells, Costner and McCauley for tonight’s game … The starting five played for roughly the first five minutes and then was completely rotated out with Degand, Fergs, Thomas, Horner, and Tracy Smith

– Brandon Costner looks like an entirely different person … he has lost a lot of weight and appears to be in good shape … At the end of the first half and the start of the second half he sort of reverted back to last season and had some bad turnovers and missed a rebound opportunity … He was benched early in the second half in favor of Horner, and was clearly frustrated by his play … I’m putting this more in the category of shaky confidence left over from last season and pressing too hard to be all world again like in March of ’07 … Either way, we’ve got to find a way for him to get his confidence back all the way and keep it up … he’s vital to this team’s chances of being a pleasant surprise

– Ft. Valley State was completely overmatched, so try and temper your judgements from this game … There were some positives for the Pack, but the Wildcats were outclassed in most areas (aside from rebounding, I’ll get to that later) and in addition turned the ball over as if that was the goal of their offensive sets

– The starting five came out and looked pretty good in man D and was able to get a couple of quick and easy transition baskets … C.J. Williams looked slightly hesitant at first but quickly found his rhythm and looked pretty good for a freshman w/ no experience … He hit a nice turnaround baseline jumper about 3 minutes in which went a long way to giving him some confidence

– The best player on the court tonight was Courtney Fells and it looked like he knew it … There was a different feel about him tonight as you could see how confident he was in everything he did … Great all around game from Fells, which included leadership on the floor and some good hustle on the defensive end … No question about who our leader was tonight

– Farnold Degand looked good and didn’t appear to have any limitations associated w/ his injury … He made a great hustle play in the second half that ended with him on the floor, and he hopped right up … We’re a different team w/ Farnold on the floor, as he provides defense and rebounding from the 1 … I think he will wind up as the starting 1, w/ Javi getting plenty of minutes (as he should)

– Speaking of Javi, he had a decent game … The game got really sloppy for a 10 minute stretch in the first half and we were unable to really pull away … Sidney was clearly annoyed, and Javi turned the ball over on a particualarly bad play around the 10:30 mark of the first half … Javi was subbed out and Sidney really got into him for a few seconds, so Javi still has a little ways to go in game management and defense, but the halfcourt sets looked far better than the last half of last season and Javi had some really nice passes and knocked down an open 3

– When Javi was subbed out, we got our first look at Julius Mays … He looked ok in the first half, a little shaky w/ the ball and a couple of lazy passes as you would expect from a freshman point guard w/ no experience … In the second half, Ft. Valley State applied some on-ball pressure and Mays had a couple of bad turnovers … he looked very much like Javi did at times during his trial-by-fire last season … So, Mays has more than a few things to learn but looked ok for the most part

– Fergs nailed a couple of open three’s tonight and played really well, particularly in the second half on both offense and defense … Horner was effective but missed some open jumpers … Tracy Smith was the workhorse you’d expect him to be … McCauley had a couple of nice stickbacks including a one-hand follow jam, but got few rebounds and didn’t look great defensively

– Simon Harris – I wish this guy could see more time … He didn’t come in until the 11:00 minute mark of the 2nd half and immediately proceeded to get an offensive rebound … Within 3 minutes, he had 4 points and 3 rebounds – 2 of them offensive rebounds … Harris finished w/ 9 points and 7 rebounds in 11:00 of play … Sure, it was Ft. Valley State, but Harris did this when he came into games last season … Nothing defines hustle as much as defense and offensive rebounding, and Harris is the best offensive rebounder we have without question … The guy has a nose for the ball and I hope he’s able to work his way more into the rotation

– Now for the really bad stuff … Rebounding was awful … Way too many offensive rebounds allowed and they out-rebounded us for the game … Poor effort here …

– We again allowed way too much easy dribble penetration, particularly in the 2nd half … We’ve got to find a way to plug this up immediately or last season’s fate awaits … The few times we switched to a 2-3 zone we looked particularly awful with the first possesion resulting in a wide open lob for them and the next few in our 2-3 we gave up wide open shots … Kinda scary

Overall, pretty fair effort – aside from rebounding and lax D in the second half … I certainly came away much more enthused about this exhibition as opposed to last season’s against Pembroke where we looked lethargic and severely overrated … Tempo was ok and Degand and Gonzalez played fairly well, and the halfcourt sets went pretty well tonight … As usual, we need to get tougher defensively and find away to get some boards … We’ll see what happens Tuesday night

Go Pack 🙂

WRAL calling the injury an ankle sprain, so doesn’t look too serious thankfully.

  2. wufpup76 11/06/2008 at 11:19 PM #

    No problem, BJD 🙂

^Hopefully that’s good news in regards to Thomas’ injury and the sprain isn’t too bad

Utah and TCU just finished a great football game w/ Utah scoring on a 80-yd drive that ended w/ under a minute left … Utah still undefeated at 10-0 … Denver/Cleveland a pretty good game too 😉 … Fun night!

Just back from the game as well. I agree with much of what Wolfpup said, but noticed some different things.

    Good:
    – Fells was clearly the best player on the court and the new up tempo offense really suits his game. He only had one or two “FELLS!!!” type moments and played smart otherwise on both ends. This was an All-ACC type display.
    – Simon Harris’s effort was unmatched.
    – Fergie was dead eye — when left open he didn’t hesitate and didn’t miss.
    – Tracy Smith was a work horse and was all around the basket.
    – Horner played much harder than last year. He missed some shots, but was really giving good effort.
    – Williams looked great for a freshman. I was a bit surprised that he started, but I saw why by the end of the game. He’s at now where I thought he’d be by the end of next season based on what’d I’d read about him.
    – Conditioning of the entire team was great. Costner and Smith had really re-shaped their bodies. Javi looked stronger. McCauley looked thinner and moved better. There was a lot of work put in by the team in the offseason and it showed.
    – Some offensive sets of beauty that reminded me of Lowe’s first season. Gone was the stagnant boring offense of last season. There were really only two possessions where the shot clock got under 5 seconds. Most possessions generated good shots.
    – We were on a 100 point pace until we absolutely cleared the bench. We really pushed on defensive stops and even occasionally on made baskets.
    – Lowe looked in command. He gave the players a little bit of rope, but yanked them and talked to them about mistakes. I saw accountability on the court.
    – Thomas really surprised me. I never thought I’d see him play for the Pack, but he reminded me (both in looks and in his game) of Richard Jefferson. He’s an athletic freak who can also shoot the ball. He hustles.
    – Defensive effort. We played with much more intensity on the defensive side of the ball.
    – Ben really passed the ball well. Guys cut to the basket from all over the court.
    – Unselfish play on offense. It was almost too unselfish at times.

    Bad:
    – Thomas’s injury. You hate to see kids get hurt. It wasn’t his previously injured leg. I’m thinking high ankle sprain though because he was initially holding his shin when he went down.
    – Refs. Most of the FVS players had at least 3 fouls and a couple of them fouled out. The game got a little chippy. The refs didn’t really allow much flow. Both teams were in the double bonus both halves.
    – I don’t want to beat the kid up, but Costner didn’t have a good night. Lowe had a quick hook on him and sat him most of the second half after an outburst that resulted in Costner slamming his fists on a table in frustration.

    Ugly:
    – Our point guard play was awful. I wish I could give a glowing review, but I just can’t. FVS’s point guard was better than our three combined. Let that sink in. A D2 point guard stole the ball repeatedly from all three of our guys and on offense consistently broke us down. I think he had 14 and would have had 16 if not for a missed dunk. Degand has lost some of his lateral quickness and didn’t look confident. His handle was awful. He could out run the FVS kids, but often would put his head down, dribble into traffic and turn it over. It looks like he’s a step slower but starting over. Mays was scrappy but totally over matched (like Javi last season). Javi was the best of them but only scored 3 points in a 50 point first half.
    – Rebounding. We got killed on the boards. This has not improved.
    – Fowler was there and looked like he’d have rather been anywhere else. The most animated I saw him was when he was schmoozing at halftime.
    – There were a couple of State fans next to me (front row) who spent the game loudly heckling FVS. I was pretty embarrassed and felt some of the comments were over the line. If you’re out there and reading this, you know who you were.

    Overall:
This team will go as far as the point guards take us. There’s actually quite a bit of talent on the team. The team plays hard and for the most part together. We’re LIGHT YEARS ahead of where we were last year at this time. If we had an upper third of the conference PG, we’d be a Sweet 16 lock. We don’t so we’re a bubble team at best. I don’t see us finishing last though and I think that most of our games will be exciting to watch.

  4. wufpup76 11/07/2008 at 12:31 AM #

^In retrospect, ryebread makes some good points about our point guard play … Maybe I was being a bit too enthusiastic

After last season, I’m ready to be more optimistic about the 1 position 😉 … I’ll put it this way, I’ll take where we’re at now and the direction it looks like we’re headed at the 1 over any point of last season (save for the couple of games where Farnold had started to come into his own)

Like ryebread said, a long way to go – but I think we’re headed in the right direction

Can someone call in to Sid’s radio show to ask what explains our poor rebounding stats for the last few years- positioning, effort, physical skills, fundamentals, etc. I would call to ask him but I’m too chicken stuff since I don’t want to chance the IRS knowing I still exist.

  6. wufpup76 11/07/2008 at 12:58 AM #

^A lot of their offensive rebounds came after we allowed easy dribble penetration and our bigs had to rotate over and stop the ball … It consistently left the weak side open for easy offensive rebounds off of missed shots

This was a big reason for our defensive rebounding woes last season as well … Can’t put it all on our big guys – if we could stop some dribble penetration our defensive rebounding totals might get a little better

On ball defense and rebounding go hand in hand, and unfortunately we’re not too great at either right now 🙁

The coaches and players keep saying they’ve put a great emphasis on each going into this season, so the results tonight are a little scary … That said, before we get too negative, this team played harder and better tonight than just about any game last season (team effort, not individual)

  7. Trip 11/07/2008 at 7:36 AM #

I only stayed for the first half, damned papers had to be done. Overall though I was far more impressed with this game than any of the games last year. We played hard, even against a D2 opponent.

    Positives:
Fells. Efficient, great defense, still super-athletic. He’s got his head in the game, that’s for sure.

Thomas. Wow, Sidney was NOT kidding when he said he plays hard. Thomas contested every shot he was within 5 feet of and even further, which is why he twisted his ankle as he was trying to stop a fast break layup leaping and swatting the backboard and just got tangled up. If he hadn’t had fell awkwardly it would have been an outstanding play. He fought hard for rebounds, although he didn’t actually grab any thanks to traffic. From watching the warmups, he can hit the 3 fairly decently, although he’s certainly not going to be the sniper that Ferguson or Fells can be. If he keeps healthy, he’ll be easily one of the most exciting players on our team by the end of the year.

CJ Williams. This was a surprise, I was expecting to hear “TREVOR FERGUSON” in the starting lineup, but CJ was honestly pretty damn good. He doesn’t shoot as well as ferguson, but he made some PLAYS. I was amazed at how well he played for his first game out of high school.

Smith. Just good. Nothing flashy, but he played hard.

Javi. In the first 10 minutes of the game Javi made more spectacular plays than he ever did last year. He made some amazing STRONG passes, even some that the teammates weren’t ready as Fells wasn’t paying attention and the ball sailed out of bounds. He has some areas to work on, but I was impressed. He had EIGHT assists. EIGHT. and a 4:1 A/T ratio that should have only been 8:1 if Fells was looking.

Ferguson: Keep shooting 100% from the 3 and you will always have minutes. 😛

Harris: Is he the only guy that knows how to rebound? Please give him minutes.

    Negatives:
Costner. He wasn’t there. Not sure what happened.

Rebounding. Why do we let midgets outrebound us? Of course, some of it was due to dribble penetration and our bigs having to rotate to stop it.

Degand. He’s certainly faster than Javi, but he was out of control. Might be a few months before he gets it all back together. Certainly better on defense though.

Mays. Last-Year-Javi reincarnated. Let’s just hope he improves as much as javi did.

  8. Dr. BadgerPack 11/07/2008 at 7:41 AM #

I suppose it isn’t a horrible sign when the rebounding is being blasted and we were out boarded by a whole 4. Even on the defensive glass, outdone by 4 on offensive by a jump shooting team (went through the play-by-play… other than a few rebounds on missed layups, it was jumpers). Last season when we got killed on the boards it was by eleventy billion.

I think the rebounding effort is probably going to be OK with some adjustment. The main adjustment is in balancing the boards and the desire to push the ball. You can’t send 5 to the glass AND have an outlet. Unfortunately, we don’t have a premier rebounder as far as I can tell. Most of your break oriented teams do.

    Mr. Favors, are you listening?

  9. PhilipRiversWannabe 11/07/2008 at 8:23 AM #

Costner looked a little gimpy. I don’t think he has fully recovered from the ankle injury. He fought through it, but he did not have a great night.

  10. jbpackfan 11/07/2008 at 8:23 AM #

I thought Degand looked bad. I was really impressed with Javi. He pushes the ball well, sees the floor, and has very good handles. To me there is no question he is our best point guard, by far. Javi had 8 assists and ran the team well. Degand was very sloppy and dribbled around too much. Don’t really understand where wufpup is coming from with regard to point guard play.

  11. BJD95 11/07/2008 at 8:32 AM #

I hate to focus on the negative, but I did just read what I have feared the most all off-season – that Farnold Degand has lost some lateral quickness (and enough to be noticeable against a weak D-II opponent).

Hopefully, some or most of that can be attributed to rust and/or initial nervousness re playing again after a catastrophic injury. Otherwise, we are F-U-C-K-E-D.

Follow-up question – did CJ look like he can be a capable secondary ballhandler? We need one of those desperately (and it can’t be Fells), especially when Javi is running point.

Fells is now at a position (SF) where it is possible for him to succeed. I’m glad to hear that initial impressions are good. The key will be keeping his mind right day in and day out – he’s always been a very hard guy to reach and motivate. Hopefully, Sid has found the key to unlock his potential.

You must have been looking at the game differently than I did, I thought that Javi and Degand played pretty well, overall. Julius Mays did look like he was confused out there, being his first game as a true freshman. For a first game, I though that they played pretty decent. They were not outplayed at all, in my opinion.

    From the boxscore:

their pg had 12 points, 3 assists, 4 turnovers, 2 steals and was 1-5 from the floor (he made 10 free throws) in 35 minutes

    Javi – 4 points, 8 assists, 2 turnovers, and 2 steals, 22 minutes
    Degand – 5 points, 4 assists, 2 turnovers, 0 steals, 14 minutes
    Julius – 0 points, 0 assists, 2 turnovers, 0 steals, 8 minutes
    ——————-

The lack of rebounding is a concern – hopefully, this will get better as they play together more.

  13. Alpha Wolf 11/07/2008 at 8:49 AM #

I think it’s pretty clear that State’s fortunes will go as far as the point guard play will take us. Hopefully, as the year begins to unfold we’ll incremental improvement from the position and that will make the team all the more dangerous.

The good news is that help is on the way for the position but that’s next year. Sid’s offensive scheme absolutely 100% relies on a solid and quick PG who makes great decisions.

  14. Clarksa 11/07/2008 at 8:55 AM #

Thanks for the recap…I didn’t even know we were playing.

  15. Trip 11/07/2008 at 8:55 AM #

“Follow-up question – did CJ look like he can be a capable secondary ballhandler? We need one of those desperately (and it can’t be Fells), especially when Javi is running point.”

CJ handled the ball a little, he made some good passes, but he didn’t dribble enough to tell if he could handle it well. He certainly didn’t screw up and at worst he was better than Fells.

Degand is still wearing a rather hefty brace on his knee which I have no doubt that is hurting his lateral quickness. But even with the loss in lateral quickness he was still faster than Javi.

I know a lot of you are Javi doubters, but the Javi I saw last night was NOT the same one we saw last year. On one amazing play he drove from near half court, darted around two people while dribbling the ball behind him, spun, took it to the rack from the left side and in midflight shot a bullet pass somehow around 2 defenders to Fells on the outside who took a uncontested 3. I can’t even remember if Fells hit that 3 because I was just sitting there in awe of what just happened. The Javi of last year would NOT have made that play, no matter what competition he was against.

  16. SuperStuff 11/07/2008 at 8:57 AM #

8 assists and 2 steals by Javi sounds pretty decent to me especially if he was splitting time with others. I’ve always thought Smith & Harris always had energy as soon as they entered a game last year so I’m not surprised they looked good.

  17. wufpup76 11/07/2008 at 8:59 AM #

“Don’t really understand where wufpup is coming from with regard to point guard play.”

I judged Degand’s performance almost solely on his efforts in coming back from a bad injury … Was he a little out of control at times? Yes. Did the offense flow a little better w/ Javi in? Yes.

But, this was his FIRST GAME after an ACL injury, and he still played fine defensively (better than Javi or Mays) … He wasn’t as quick as last season w/ lateral movement as has been pointed out, but I thought he gave a pretty good effort coming back from a bad injury

To say his play was awful is more than unfair in my opinion … I don’t think he’s months away, I think he’s a few weeks away … I think we should be thankful that we have Javi who is a nice passer and has a lot of experience while Degand plays himself back into game shape

Stopping the ball and stopping dribble penetration will be defensive keys for us this season, and even after an injury Farnold is still the far better defender

  18. wufpup76 11/07/2008 at 9:12 AM #

“did CJ look like he can be a capable secondary ballhandler?”

CJ looked good w/ the ball and seemed confident w/ it even in transition – no terrible turnovers, at least … That said, as Trip noted, it was a very limited sample

Hopefully we’ll find out more on Tuesday night

  19. ryebread 11/07/2008 at 9:44 AM #

It was the first game and everyone really gave a great TEAM effort. I can’t stress enough how much better last night looked than last year at this time. We looked deeper in talent, in better shape, more on the same page and better coached. Granted, it’s the first game and we’ve not faced any adversity yet, but we looked better last night than any time last year and I think last night’s team would have beaten last year’s team 8 games out of 10.

At the same time, you’ve got to be wearing rose colored glasses if you thought Degand and Mays played well or looked remotely ready to face ACC competition. I’m not trying to beat up on our players, but that’s just how I saw it. I also don’t think that the box score was accurate with respect to our turnovers.

Degand ended up on his rear multiple times when the other team knocked the ball away from him or when he just tripped over himself. He tried hard on defense but was juked multiple times causing help to have to come his way. This isn’t the same Degand that we had playing ‘Nova last season.

Mays was in his first college game and saw some good minutes. At the same time, he’s small and not that quick (a lot like Javi last season). He doesn’t have the handle of a true PG and doesn’t have the shot of a true SG. He could not break the press of a D2 school. If he’s forced into major minutes this season, we’re in big trouble.

As for Javi, he did have a nice stat line last night. He controlled tempo well and pushed the ball. He has good instincts. At the same time, think back to last season. His best games have always been when he’s not physically outmatched. He should have an 8:1 Assist:Turnover ratio given how much bigger, stronger and more athletic our team was. I didn’t necessarily see the remarkable improvement that suggests to me that he’s ready to take on ACC guards. He’s still not a true offensive threat and was broken down on the dribble.

Hopefully for the team and our sanity as fans, I am incorrect. If not, it’s going to be another up and down season.

  20. Bubba 11/07/2008 at 10:22 AM #

Javi played a decent game(about all I can hope for from him) He has to become a better free throw shooter The ball will be in his hands all year long

FVS didnt play any zone defense which really slowed us down last year(among a long list of other things)
Hopefully Catawba will show some zone for us to practice against

IMO, Javi, CJW, Farnold,Trev and JM will not be better than the backcourts of many of the 24 different teams we play this year. Therefore dont be surprised if we lose at New Orleans or to someone like Winthrop at home.

  21. Wolf-n-Atl 11/07/2008 at 10:31 AM #

I think we are being a little hard on the point guards. Degand is coming off an injury and is probably testing his knee and what his capabilities are. You don’t know until you try if you can do the things you used to do. I’m glad he is doing it now and not in a regular season game.

I will be happy if our pg’s manage the game tempo, push the ball when needed, don’t turn it over and have some positive assists. We don’t need a scoring pg. We just need them to keep the defense honest and control the offense.

It sounds like we have some positives moving forward and also some things to work on. All in all, it is a good way to start the season. Lets hope Johnny’s injury isn’t serious and we get to see him play some meaningful minutes this year.

  22. BJD95 11/07/2008 at 10:46 AM #

Here’s my evaluation of Javi – his game is almost entirely predicated on scrappiness, and when he is faster (and not dramatically smaller) than the opposing PG, he looks GREAT. I point to the Duke game (against the small, slow Greg Paulus) as evidence of that. Otherwise, he tends to look AWFUL.

That will be the case in maybe 7-8 games ALL YEAR. What he has yet to show me is that he can do anything offensively when at a speed/quickness disadvantage, and/or keep bigger PGs from abusing his attempts to defend.

  23. Alpha Wolf 11/07/2008 at 11:05 AM #

I think that BJD nailed Javi’s skills on the head.

My guess is that Javi will end up being a scrappy get in the other guy’s face backup that can give the starting PG a blow and make the other team very nervous at the same time. I just do not foresee him as a top-caliber ACC starter.

I would love to be wrong about that but you can’t teach size and speed.

  24. JeremyH 11/07/2008 at 11:13 AM #

I was going to say the same Wolf-n-Atl. This is a part of his road to recovery, I think he needs time to strengthen and also get back into the swing of things. It sounds like Fergie might have more of an impact this year with his shooting, Thomas will be a contributor, and CJ Williams is a pleasant surprise. These latter two guys will give us the team speed we were missing last year. Now it is just up to Lowe to get the right mixes in there, keep them playing hard and playing together. Are there any presses employed? We should take advantage of the number of players by trying to wear the other team down, like Carolina has done.

  25. wufpup76 11/07/2008 at 11:16 AM #

It was a good game to get Degand and Mays in … If I implied that they played great or were ready for ACC level comp. I certainly didn’t mean to

I came away encouraged that we would have Degand at close to full speed within a few weeks and thought he gave a fair effort based upon his return from injury … I tried to be positive in my review, b/c the game felt like a positive … That said, the negatives that have been pointed out were plenty and we have a lot of work to do

Mays has light years to make up before he should see any significant time, but it was good to get him in and he looked ok at times

Bottom line is we will need both Degand and Javi to stay / get healthy, log a ton of minutes, and hopefully get better defensively
