Statefans Nation Stats for 2008

UPDATE: We just upgraded the site to the current version of WordPress.

Someone asked me the other day just how popular this site is, and I responded that SFN sees over 3 million page views from over 1 million unique visitors per year.

They scoffed.  I laughed, because it’s just the facts:

  • 1,379,634 visits from 11/27 2007 – 11/27/2008
  • 3,161,563 page views from those 1.38 million readers
  • 18.74% of those visitors are first time readers

For a blog, that’s pretty darned successful, especially for a single-team sports focused one that doesn’t use babe pics to drive up the hits.  And best of all, those numbers above are very conservative — after I was promoted earlier this year and working some 70-80 hours a week for a while, no one noticed that the Google Analytics software that we use to track the site and create the numbers above wasn’t working for about a month.  In other words, you can probably add at least another 8% to the stats and thus you have a true picture of where we are at.

If I may, please let me say thanks to each of you that take the time to log on over here and read what we have to say.  I’d especially like to thank the folks that are regular members of the comments community that’s sprung from the idea of Statefans Nation — without a doubt, you guys are the best commenters that there are in ACC sports.  Rarely do we have to moderate users — and I think I can count on one hand the times I have had to come in and delete or modify a comment because someone got out of hand.  Considering that there are over 96,000 comments on the site, that speaks for itself.

That reminds me to remind you that if your comment disappears into the ether, it might be because there are some very strict anti-spam rules within the blog software.  That’s because as a popular site we are attacked dozens if not hundreds of times a day by folks wanting to steal your attention and to stop that I had to put in some quite Draconian filters.  If you’re a dolphin caught up in the tuna net, please don’t take it personally.  I’m sure you would rather have that happen than have to read the dozens of ads for penis pills, porn, Nigerian princesses and amazing free money offers like winning Spanish lottery ticket numbers that you’d have to endure if our filters didn’t guard the place day and night with ruthless precision.  As soon as we see it we’ll release your comment.

Last thing, it’s getting close to time to evolve the site once again, meaning that upgrades and enhancements are coming.  I’ll let you know what they are as they happen and will appreciate your input and patience when that time comes.

In the meantime, again, thank you very much for coming!

Thanks SFN for all that you do. This site is #1 for keeping current on Wolfpack athletics and other issues relevant to State. Checking SFN several times a day is a must for me and apparently for many other state fans.

Posted this in another thread, but you might be more likely to see it here.

    Site Admins:
You need to update your DNS settings. traffic going to the non-www statefansnation is ending up at your web host’s homepage instead of over here. It just needs 1 more line in your DNS for the traffic to route correctly.

I actually thought the site was down for a couple days until I realized I was leaving the www out of the url.

Scrotcho — you have hit twice on this, so I will post the NSLOOKUP data for you:

    nslookup statefansnation.com
    Server: 208.64.24.2
    Address: 208.64.24.2#53

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: statefansnation.com
    Address: 208.66.73.66

    nslookup http://www.statefansnation.com
    Server: 208.64.24.2
    Address: 208.64.24.2#53

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: http://www.statefansnation.com
    Address: 208.66.73.66

As I explained to you in the other thread, this is not a DNS problem as you can see. I see what you are talking about, but it is not address resolution. It is instead a problem with Apache2’s Virtual Server directive code and it something that happens from time to time.

I stumbled upon this site 4 years ago and it was awesome then just as it is now. God willing, I prioritize my life accordingly and execute a decent amount of perspective. I feel it’s fitting to give thanks the day after to the giving this blog has provided to an appreciative community. There has been alot of fun we’ve had here on this site in a period that the returns from the teams we are all fans of have not always brought joy.

Great job, guys! This is the best site anywhere, anytime, anywho! Even if you did moderate a couple of my posts when we were fed up with “you know who” and his other brother Darryl, the football coach!

Sorry for that misuse of words, but watched too many of the old Bob Newhart shows last night!

  6. oldflyingfarmer 11/28/2008 at 11:34 AM #

This is my favorite site. Keep up the good work. It is appreciated my many of us solid fans.

  7. oldflyingfarmer 11/28/2008 at 11:36 AM #

by not my in above post. It would not let me edit even though it said click here to edit.

  8. RAWFS 11/28/2008 at 12:09 PM #

This is a test comment by Alpha Wolf in a regular user account…and it has been successfully edited.

Users have fifteen minutes to edit their comments, which is increased from 5 minutes from the original posting time. Also, it looks like the comment editor gives you one edit free and then drops you into moderation if you edit things twice. That’s the spam filter in action, so edit carefully.

Please let me know if this is not working, thanks.

    Thanks for all you do.

Nice stats. I am curious to know what info they are collecting to determine number of distinct readers and number of unique readers. I hope it is not unique IP addresses, as that is a false indicator. Still, the hits are the most important thing, and there is no fudging those numbers.

Thanks for the insightful articles. I never go to those other NC State sports message boards anymore.

How does one get in touch with the author of this blog? There’s no email or button or anything that I can find.

I’d like to invite the authors to contribute to another blog that gives accurate and detailed descriptions of food/bar choices in and around stadiums. Only a few college have been done so far, and it would be great to see CFS featured prominently on the site (www.fanfoodie.com).

Hoping this won’t be posted E-MAIL ADDRESS REDACTED

p.s. – I write for this blog (http://huggingharoldreynolds.blogspot.com/) who might be the only blog to accurately predict last week’s tar heel pounding.

The old, independent Statefans.com was my favorite website of all time. I’m glad to see it live on in this iteration. This site offers something most other NC State sites don’t, and that’s honesty. Information here isn’t always filtered through a rose-tinted lens to make it appear to be all happiness and sunshine. We all want NC State athletics to be as great as we know it can be, and sometimes that requires pointing out flaws and holding those in charge accountable. This site does that, offering great info and commentary concerning the highs and the lows of following NC State sports.

Also, I like the addition of the block ‘S’ next to the names…keep up the great work!

Rusty: Check your email. That is right up my alley. Recommendations for tailgating, eating, drinking etc…is something I have though about doing over here(gave a little advice for Chapel Hill last week).

  14. Alpha Wolf 11/28/2008 at 4:45 PM #

^ Good advice, too, I might add.

if your comment disappears into the ether, it might be because there are some very strict anti-spam rules within the blog software.

Unless JB, BJD, or Alpha were playing jokes on me, then even author’s comments disappear into the spam folder. I’ve had to rescue my own comments from there on more than one occasion. Bottom line…don’t take it personally if your comments disappear

AFAIK, Alpha is the only contributor here than can even spell HTML. So he gets all of the credit for keeping the site running…and running well. For those that don’t remember, Alpha stepped in and helped SFN out when our server was being swamped….and this was while he was already running his own blog. A big thanks to Alpha and all of his good work.

Do you have any way of tracking the percentage of hits that come from blog readers? Do these hits count the same as hits from actual page loads in a web browser? How many people subscribe to your RSS feed?

I love this site. Found it right about the time HWSNBN was run out of town/left on his own accord/whatever. I really liked him at the time, and just couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t get over the proverbial hump, and why his teams continually upchucked at crunch time.
I have learned a lot from this place. I still wish HWSNBN’d well in Az. State, but I have a totally different perspective on his 10-year rule.
In the red hills of Northeast Georgia, about the only other N.C. State news I get comes from the N&O Web site. And Lord knows that means I need another perspective.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

As a H.S. coach, this site has the most intelligent people on
football of all sites I have visited.
As a N.C. STATE grad I enjoy keeping up with what’s going on at State
    and it’s athletics programs.
Thanks guys and keep up the great work!

I’m a frequent reader that infrequently comments. However, I felt like I need to say thanks for all you do. I check the site at least once per day for the latest news. All of you do a great job.

    Again……..THANKS!!!!!

I started checking out this site about 3 or so years ago when a friend said that he came here to stay updated on the BB coaching search. It was like I had come home. I had been checking out the recruiting sites, but it wasn’t enough. Man does not live by recruiting news, web runs, and game summaries alone. I really enjoy this site and the work that goes into it and the knowledge and entertainment that I gain from it. I also enjoy the different perspectives and the voices from different generations. As an 8-year-old Wolfpack fan (I’m not 8; that’s how long I’ve been a fan), I really enjoy reading the stories of Wolfpack lore and days best forgotten. Keep it up and Go Pack!

    3 cheers for SFN!!!

Thanks to the authors, contributors, and awesome community … and thanks Alpha for all the web updates and for keeping the server going against the load of hits that I know us Pack fans provide 🙂

Go Pack! Let’s beat the U!

  22. TOBtime 11/29/2008 at 7:33 AM #

Awesome site guys. Love the way you run it and how honest you allow it to be. I don’t have any misconceptions about how much effort this project takes! Thanks!

  23. highstick 11/29/2008 at 11:17 AM #

PackerinRussia, I’ve been saving these for you. Got these words/quotes from a buddy of mine that went through language school with me as a Russian linguest. We were discussing some of the more crude words we taught each other when we were in school. He reminded me of “gavno” and “Yop tebya”. Obviously ‘anglicized’ for spelling purposes! How fluent is your Russian??? LOL!!

  24. Redbeard 11/29/2008 at 3:30 PM #

Another thanks to the folks that make this site possible. I’ve been reading SFN since probably ’05. Since then, I’ve moved from my hometown of Clayton to the Kansas City area and from there to Oklahoma City. SFN is one of a handful of sites that I count on to keep me informed of everything Wolfpack. Thanks guys.

You guys do a great job. I’m sure traffic will continue to grow with improved play and the site’s continued commitment to bringing users an exceptional product.
