Boxscore |

Quick thoughts:

-N&O: Pack routs Heels, 41-10
-ESPN Video: N.C. State Pins Upset On No. 22 North Carolina
N&O Photo Gallery
-TOB 2, BMFD 0
-UNC: Was that last TD by State really necessary?
-A Dick Sheridan style UNC ass whipping
-ACC Records: NC State 3-4, UNC 3-4
-Total yard NC State 470, UNC 196
-Turnovers: UNC 6, NC State 0
-Wilson: 17-28, 279 Yards, 2 TD’s

Just say it over and over again. 41-10.

The game was not as close as the score indicated. This would really hurt poor Butchie, if it wasn’t “just another game” for him.

This was our Super Bowl today. This might be the last moment of glory until next September, but the smile ain’t leaving my face.

If you haven’t already, go to WRAL.com and watch RW’s post game interview. I can’t express how proud I am that we have this guy leading our team. Talk about buying into TOB’s program. He IS TOB out on the field.

“Was that last TD by State really necessary?”

No, but it sure was fun!

Good thing it didn’t snow in Chapel Hill. 🙂

Not sure whether to laugh or feel sorry for the players.

In regards to our final TD, Bobby Bowden responded to criticism of running up the score on OCain’s 96 team by saying:

“If you wanna run with the big dogs, you’re gonna get bit.”

    Woof woof, Holes.

After a big celebratory drunk, it’s nice to wake up and realize this is real. Big, big win for the Pack.

I just watched Russell’s interview on wral.com, and what else is there to say but “wow.” When asked about possibly being up by much more in the first half, Russell responded with (paraphrased) “I take that on my shoulders, I could have thrown the ball a little better.” Are you kidding me? What a great kid. He had touchdowns that were flat dropped and he says he could have thrown the ball better. He’s the type kid you can build a championship team around. I’m not saying that will happen, but I am saying he’s the possible cornerstone of such a team.

It’s a good thing I don’t bet. Whatever i would have won on the Pack I would have lost on Texas Tech. I never saw that beat down coming…ever.

The aluminum crack is too rich. My Carolina buddies are taking it with good grace. Bless their hearts.

Even after all his struggles w/ dropped passes, it’s wonderful to see the way TOB and Russell Wilson treat Owen Spencer … We’ve got some really high character people in this football program:

“”It hurts,” Spencer said. “All dropped balls do but you have to let it go.”

Wolfpack coach Tom O’Brien encouraged Spencer at the half after the drop in the end zone.

“You’re going to make a play,” O’Brien told Spencer at the half. “Hang in there.”

After J.C. Neal stripped Robert Quinn on a kickoff return at 1:28 in the third quarter. Spencer got his second chance. WIlson didn’t hesitate to thread a post pattern down the heart of UNC’s secondary, despite Spencer’s recent problems.

“He’s a strong-willed guy,” Wilson said. “He’s not going to get down on himself no matter what happens. I had all the faith in the world in him.”

Spencer, who leads State with 27 receptions and 566 receiving yards for the season, impressed O’Brien.

“It’s a credit to him that he kept his chin up and kept swinging,” O’Brien said.”

Luke DeCock has a basketball recruiting article up centered on the Pack’s recruitment of Favors and Wall …

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/decock/story/1306262.html

DeCock also talks about the High Point game and mentions they hit 11 3-pointers … That’s basically all they took all night – 3-point attempts – It was pretty clear that was the focus of their offense, to take the first / best 3-point attempt available … So, it’s not quite as bad as it sounds … Also, we (the Pack) plain and simple missed a lot of shots … The offense wasn’t so much stagnant as there was good ball movement, but we missed a lot of shots including some pretty good inside looks

Let’s see now, the sun is shining, the family is all doing fine, everything is just…kinda nice…in my little world this morning.

I can’t wait to get to work tommorrow and collect on every one of my four $10.00 bets with co-workers. It’s not much, I know, but then it really doesn’t take much in order for me to gain a feeling of total superiority, and then make their lives miserable for as long as I can possibly milk this thing.

Does anyone else get the impression that RW’s development if far, far beyond what the coaches expected? I always assumed he was going to be the placeholder until Glennon was ready. But there is going to be a real battle next fall for the starting gig.

Every game I am more impressed with his ability to throw accurately and with strength on the run, even going to his left. I also like how he doesn’t give up on Spencer no matter how many he drops. Spencer’s touchdown catch will pay off in the long run for his confidence.

pup, thanks for the earlier follow up on the players. I did look at the stats on gopack last night and the shooting percentages were not where they need to be. That’s something that can turn around, though in the past, before Lowe arrived even, we kept waiting for the shots to start dropping, and they never did. A better effort on the offensive glass is an easy way to alter those shooting percentages more in our ‘Favors’.

Glennon might be the second coming but he will have a hard time taking the starting job from RW

redfred2 “Anybody gonna break down and give old Chucky Boy some credit for at least having the ability to spot talent in CERTAIN AREAS?”

We always have (linebacker/d-line). That is why he should be an assistant coach. However, I will give TOB much more credit b/c he is a much more talented coach and spots talent at ALL positions.

Dang PackerInRussia, after hearing the chorus of BOO’s in Kenan, then reading that article about snowballs in South Bend, I guess the N & O was right, we really started something.

Go back and read some of our offseason posts – the staff was extremely high on Russell Wilson going back to his time with the scout team. There’s a reason why Dana Bible spent the whole offseason designing an offense to fit Russell’s strengths.

Maybe they didn’t expect a POY-caliber performance right off the bat, but they knew he was really damned good.

  16. redfred2 11/23/2008 at 11:58 AM #

tractor, I have thought the same thing for weeks now. Right now, I can’t see how anyone could be more accurate or more protective of the football, or provide more leadership on the football field than RW. The kid is quietly confident, he steps up and trusts his teammates to do their jobs, even after they haven’t held up their end of the bargain just a play or two before, and the entire offense is energized and feeding off of his lead.

If there is a player who can take that position away, I cannot wait to see it.

State Champions! Even Mack Brown can’t say that this year! As far as last TD, Butch and TOB have a history. Butch and Miami never had a problem rubbing it in everyone’s face and I think this team needed it for confidence reasons.

I predicted we would finish around 6-6 and would push for a possible bowl bid this year. I am amazed at the job this coaching staff has done with our OL. They and the entire team have gotten better week to week. And so glad to see the integrity of our coaching staff, Curtis should have been kicked off the team. Sheridan and TOB both had no problem setting a standard and held everyone to it.

Wonder if we will put any running options in our offense this week after what Ga. Tech did to Miami. With Eugene back to form might be something we can do. I thought Brown ran a little tentative to start the game but got stronger as the game progressed.

If Duke can get any QB play they might beat UNC, Duke threw something like only 10 passes and had 4 INT’s yesterday. Anyone can run on UNC, their D line is very weak.

BJD, it is apparent that the staff had plans for Wilson going back into the spring, but I don’t think ANYONE could have imagined how poised, or what a complete package that guy really is. We have seen some truly spectacular play, and even better, it is the kind of heady play that almost eliminates mistakes before they can even happen. Now that it has taken hold, the entire team has lifted their play in support of it, and we are NOW playing like we know we are supposed to win football games.

It’s one thing to see the physical talent in a kid, talk to him and know that he has what it takes to communicate and lead, but until it all unfolds on the football, in front of 50 thousand screaming fans, you just never know. We should all know that. I am very pleased that TOB choose to go in this direction, but I still know they’re down in coach’s office laughing and saying, “Are you kidding me, can you believe this kid?”

  19. packalum44 11/23/2008 at 12:24 PM #

RW showed us yesterday that he can throw the deep ball! Wow! Now that he has that in his arsenal, the sky is the limit. I only remember one bad throw, a short pass to the sidelines was a little high. But his deep balls the past few games have been on the money! Did not see that at the beginning of the year. Also, can you tell Dana is becoming more confident in this kid by his play calling? Love the 20 yard touchdown pass to Owen after the turnover on first down.

This kid is special. And like I told my buddies last night, its a good problem to have potentially the two best QB’s in the conference! It feels even better the day after. It was almost surreal yesterday. 🙂

    Great Game !
Last week someone posted a quote about winning . First you lose by a little, then you win by a little , then everything comes together and you kick UNC ” s butt !!!
I think I’ll move back to Raleigh so I can soak it all up!
Best football in a long while, and we keep improving!
    GO PACK !

  21. redfred2 11/23/2008 at 12:40 PM #

We intercepted the football on a mistake by unc, our DB almost scored on the play, and the ball was down inside the two yard line. It wasn’t like we had any field to work with, or that we were on their twenty five and desperately trying to get it into their end zone to rub it in. You know, it’s kind of like having a wide open basket, and then jamming it through. It’s just what you’re trained to do.

I think all of the talk about the final TD can be put to rest.

Anyway, they’re the sleeping GIANTS, they have the talent, they’re led by Butchy Davis, they will have many opportunities to return the favor. Or will they? MuuuHaHaHaHaHaHa!!!

  22. buttPACKer 11/23/2008 at 2:01 PM #

i just can’t say enough about how well this team has begun to jell. . . what’s more: I think Wilson may very well be the best QB this university has ever seen, Rivers included!

Excellent win fellas!! Kudos to the TOB and the coaching staff as well!!

  23. buttPACKer 11/23/2008 at 2:03 PM #

Oh yeah, THANKS TO BITCH–I mean, butch–DAVIS for such a competitive game, too!

  24. Mike 11/23/2008 at 2:27 PM #

buttpacker, we are all thrilled with the win and the poise, but I would not go that far yet.

As I said in several posts this summer, my company HQ is Richmond, and the CEO called me when RW signed with us. He said you are getting a good football player, but an even better person. This has so far shown to be true. I am just as proud to have RW under center for his character than his passing/running.

favorite quote from yesterday was one I found on a UNX message board:

“The only thing State hated about this game was that they ran out of time. They were looking to tack on 50+ guys…total woodshed effort.”

    41-10 SUCK IT HOLES.
