Route 40+1 Runs Through Chapel Hill (NC State 41, UNC 10)

Boxscore |

Quick thoughts:

-N&O: Pack routs Heels, 41-10
-ESPN Video: N.C. State Pins Upset On No. 22 North Carolina
N&O Photo Gallery
-TOB 2, BMFD 0
-UNC: Was that last TD by State really necessary?
-A Dick Sheridan style UNC ass whipping
-ACC Records: NC State 3-4, UNC 3-4
-Total yard NC State 470, UNC 196
-Turnovers: UNC 6, NC State 0
-Wilson: 17-28, 279 Yards, 2 TD’s

Just say it over and over again. 41-10.

The game was not as close as the score indicated. This would really hurt poor Butchie, if it wasn’t “just another game” for him.

This was our Super Bowl today. This might be the last moment of glory until next September, but the smile ain’t leaving my face.

Which would you rather be right now…

A three and four football team who is playing like it’s a division, or maybe even a conference championship contender?

Or a supposed “conference championship contender/sleeping giant” who’s playing like a three and four football team?

One is on the way up, the other, well they can’t ever seem to live up the never ending H-Y-P-E that’s thanks to their own fair and balanced grads of the unc school of journalism.

^^ Chuck could recruit, he just couldn’t coach in game or run a program. That is all I was saying.

UNC fans will figure out they have the same thing soon enough. The only problem is that it is going to cost them about $15,000,000 more than it did for us.

  3. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 10:11 PM #

st8, I know what you were saying, and I agree with all of your points as to why. It’s kind of interesting to me, either that, or scary as hell, depending on your viewpoint, trying to guess what situation we would experiencing right now if Chuck Amato were still here?

Either way, there is no doubt that this coaching staff is for real.

Not sure this will work or not. I didn’t care for the State Champions shirt on Gopack so I created this at Cafe Press. Here is the link, if it works.

speaking of some UNC fans’ suggestion that it was somehow unsportsman-like to continue to score after it was clearly the Pack’s game. . . Would it not be “point shaving” to not score when you have the opportunity?

    Just curious. . . .

  6. LRM 11/22/2008 at 10:25 PM #

    Well that was fun.

Seriously, is there any way Russell isn’t the ACC’s first team QB? He’s a machine.

Hopefully, instead of a nice holiday trip with blue surf, the Heels have earned blue turf instead. We just might have punched their ticket to Boise today.

Would one more Blue Devil win in football this season be good or what?

  8. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 10:28 PM #

buttpacker, What, are you CRAZY? Don’t give those folks in CH any ammo. They’ll get together with Swofford, and they’ll have the Raleigh crawling with NCAA agents with talk like that.

It is UGLY in Norman, and they are jawing, but Tech’s only down by like 6 touchdowns – its doable. I am getting worried. Actually watched “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” through most of the first half. The wife was happy.

Best TOB Quote from Giglio’s story in the N&O — “We are the state university and we expect to be here.”

I love that – The State University, and we expect to be here!

What two words discribe todays victory for you????????

    Mine would be–ASS WHOOPING

Beez, I’m with you on that. You gotta love the fact that TOB seems to be embracing this rivalry as much as any of us.

BJD95, Thanks for the memory refresher.

“Russell Wilson is an amazing young QB. His biggest problem…those around him not rising up to his level of play. Once they do that, we will be a VERY dangerous. team.”

I think this “learning how to win” comes into play here.

Running the score up? See Steve Spurrier. Running the football and your opponent laying down while you have your way with them, is not running the score up on anybody. The “Victory Formation” IMO is the only time a competing player on the field has an obligation to “run the clock out.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I wanted to throw in some quick notes on the High Point basketball game:

    – Farnold was in street clothes; Johnny T. was dressed but again DNP

    – Final score was 69-56, IIRC … Believe it or not, we really won this game on the defensive end … High Point was really hot to start the game and was able to effectively use screens and nailed I believe at least 5 consecutive 3-pointers over about a five minute stretch of the first half … We were down 21-17 when our guys defensive intensity really ratcheted up and we went on a big run to close out the first half … The first 15 minutes of the second half offered more of the same, other than being able to pull away from them … We were finally able to pull away around the 8:00 minute mark of the 2nd half

    – Courtney Fells was easily the player of the game and seems to have really grown into a nice leadership role this season … His defense was outstanding tonight, and he was extremely effective on the offensive end … Great all-around effort from Fells tonight that in fact drew a “He’s our Russell Wilson” comment from Sidney after the game

    – Javi got into early foul trouble tonight and Julius Mays played about the final 12:00 of the first half … Julius was very solid during those minutes, including being on the floor when we made a nice run to close out the half … Overall tonight Mays played pretty well – solid as Sidney likes to say – for a true freshman … He still struggles w/ a lot of pressure, but was effective if unspectacular … This turned out to be a very good game experience for him tonight

    – Rebounding effort was pretty good tonight … We’re starting to get Brandon Costner back … Costner didn’t even play too much in the second half but still led us in rebounding w/ 9 tonight … Good effort from Costner on the boards tonight

    – Got to give High Point some credit – this game shouldn’t have really been that close but they were very scrappy … We just couldn’t pull away from them for a long time tonight, but I give them credit for that rather than seeing it as anything negative our guys were or were not doing

    – Big positives from this game came from High Point showing some full court press and playing A LOT of 2-3 zone … I say positives b/c our zone offense looked FAR SUPERIOR than at any time last season … Easily better … We utilized both Costner and Horner flashing to the middle tonight against that zone which resulted in some pretty good ball movement against the zone … We were even able to get quite a few inside looks against the zone but failed to convert on quite a few … But the biggest and best news was that the offense looked comfortable playing against a zone tonight as opposed to that dreadful “offense” that we showed last season against a zone D … Good news here

    – Overall this was a positive experience for the team … We got the W, Mays got some good game experience, rebounding effort was pretty good, the D effort was good tonight, and probably best of all to me we looked like we could actually attack a zone on offense tonight

This win wrapped up a second straight great Saturday for our teams 🙂 … Some of the football team did show up at the game for a while in the first half and were introduced on the court before halftime to a hugely appreciative crowd … Russell was there, Nate Irving and Andre Brown among others … Before leaving the court, Andre spoke to the crowd thanking them and asked us to show up loud against the “U” next Saturday … The guys were mocking the “U” hand signal as they walked of the court – it was fun 🙂

    Goooo Pack!

    Help! Anybody!!
What’s with that F—ing BELL? Have to admit it did sound a bit like what you might expect to hear at a FUNERAL. But it started too early for that to be the case. If it was to inspire the Holes, it didn’t work. And they didn’t “ring” it a lot in the 4th Qtr.

If it’s still around 2 years from now, let’s pass the hat for some Greeks to disable that sucker before our game.

  16. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 11:06 PM #

Um, to any unc fan, player, or coach out there, who might be whining right about now, Olkahoma was up 52 to 7, and they throw the long ball for another TD. Sounds like this ‘new’ thing about scoring as many points as you possibly can in a D1 collegiate football game, and especially after you’ve already wrapped up a win, could really become a major problem. For gosh sakes, where are those folk’s manners?

  17. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 11:16 PM #

    Thanks pup, another great job!

I’ll check the stats on gopack, but how about McCauley? T Ferg? Did Javi play well before foul trouble, or was he out of control? What did you think about those guys?

  18. wolfonthehill 11/22/2008 at 11:43 PM #

So you guys spent the past couple months setting this up, with the “First you lose by a little…”, then the “Then you win by a little…”, but then missed your chance to go with “Then you win by a lot…” today.

Or have you just not posted that one yet?

  19. wolfonthehill 11/22/2008 at 11:45 PM #

^^^^ And I figured out sometime midway through the game that the bell is for when the opponent is facing 3rd down… they ring it 3 times.

But I agree… I didn’t hear too much of it in the 4th, as we just unleashed the f’ing dogs. Either Russell was throwing TD’s on the first play, or we were gashing their D-line for 5-10 yards/pop on the ground. But no third downs.

    Simply beautiful.

    Last comment (I’ve been reading everything I could find, links, posts, etc.) Today was the best UNX first possession in Kenan, since around 1976 when;
We kicked off to the Holes and in the 1st series we had a pick six.
Kick-off again. In the 2nd series we had a fumble recovery out of the air for six.
Kick-off again. In the 3rd series we held for a 3 and out and returned the punt to the 4 yard line. 21-0 after scoring on first offensive play of the game.
Jack Whitely will likely never forget scoring 3 touchdowns his first 3 times touching the football against Carolina. Best I remember it was the season opener so it was his first career scores as well.
(And It could have been Gary Younts who did all that. I am clueless as to how to look this up.)

  21. choppack1 11/22/2008 at 11:59 PM #

A friend of mine called midway through the first half. He asked:

“Why do they always ring that bell before we get a first down?”

  22. wufpup76 11/23/2008 at 12:18 AM #

“but how about McCauley? T Ferg? Did Javi play well before foul trouble, or was he out of control? What did you think about those guys?”

Hey redfred – all 3 of these guys worked hard and did their jobs tonight … McCauley couldn’t really get his 1-on-1 post moves going tonight, but had some nice passes as usual and worked hard on both defense and on the boards …

Fergs played pretty well, nailing a couple of open 3’s against the zone and he was really impressive in helping break the press when he was in tonight; Fergs had some boards and a couple of nice D plays, but did play off his man just a couple of times tonight which burned us a couple of times … No question right now Fergs offers us a lot more on the offensive end as opposed to Williams, but I believe Williams is starting due to his defensive play … Williams smothered his man on D tonight, which was good to see – we do need Williams to be more of an offensive threat, but Fergs and Williams combine to give us a pretty reasonable combination at the 2

Javi was definitely not out of control and in fact looked quite comfortable in both breaking some press and attacking the zone … I can’t overstate this enough, we looked light years better attacking a zone tonight as opposed to last season … Javi has grown quite a bit and is really rounding into a nice offensive player … He also nailed a couple of open 3’s from the top of the key early in the second half to really loosen that zone up … Nothing spectacular from Javi tonight, but he doesn’t have to be … Pretty fair effort from Javi tonight, just need him to not reach in and get into foul trouble!

I continue to be encouraged by this team’s efforts thus far, hard not to like them 😉 … If we can get / stay healthy we could be pretty pesky this season if the effort level stays high and we continue to gel … I certainly don’t see another 2008 season coming down the pike … Go Pack! 🙂

The best comment I heard all day long – I beleive it was Tony Haynes.

“What color is Carolina Blue? Evidently it must be aluminum.”

Hahahahahaha. that was funny. All the fair weather fans left in the 3rd Qtr and the stadium was full of aluminum fans.

The 2nd best is the stripping of the football should be illegal. Thanks for the link dogbreath.

“What color is Carolina Blue? Evidently it must be aluminum.”

You’re not kidding on that comment… I rolled for about 5 minutes after hearing it.

Also, is there anywhere I can pickup a Russell Wilson jersey? I want one of those bad boys now.

  25. Greywolf 11/23/2008 at 2:21 AM #

Didn’t the Holes keep from losing a big one (ND or GT maybe)by stripping the ball from a receiver THEY were holding up and pushing sideways and back? Don’t recall the rules experts complaining about that. Nor did they complained too much when Harrison Beck was stripped after he was stopped picking up a 1st down? (Different game)

When you get your ass handed to you, it’s best to say, “We got our asses handed to us today.”
