Route 40+1 Runs Through Chapel Hill (NC State 41, UNC 10)

Boxscore |

Quick thoughts:

-N&O: Pack routs Heels, 41-10
-ESPN Video: N.C. State Pins Upset On No. 22 North Carolina
N&O Photo Gallery
-TOB 2, BMFD 0
-UNC: Was that last TD by State really necessary?
-A Dick Sheridan style UNC ass whipping
-ACC Records: NC State 3-4, UNC 3-4
-Total yard NC State 470, UNC 196
-Turnovers: UNC 6, NC State 0
-Wilson: 17-28, 279 Yards, 2 TD’s

Just say it over and over again. 41-10.

The game was not as close as the score indicated. This would really hurt poor Butchie, if it wasn’t “just another game” for him.

This was our Super Bowl today. This might be the last moment of glory until next September, but the smile ain’t leaving my face.

As we have all discussed for several weeks running, we now get to enjoy beating UNC during what was supposed to be their break-out year. We didn’t just beat them, we DOMINATED them. I have not seen us play a complete game like this against a respectable opponent since the Man With the Golden Arm graced o’er the fields of Caroline (there stands ever cherished, NC State, as thy honored shrine…).

In looking back, all of the credit will go to Russell Wilson and our offense (as it should be). He has shown himself to easily be the Rookie of the Year and a stretch for POY. Looking retrospectively, however, our defense won this game. We dominated the line of scrimage on defense and forced UNC into a record SIIIIXXXXXX turnovers. Our defense set up our offense and made RW’s job easier than it has been all season. Because of our defensive contributions, In Russ We Trust (being probably the most opportunistic QB I have seen in the ACC) made UNC pay for every offensive miscue.

    Happiness….

newt, I believe TOB did say “We are the best …” at least twice … I heard him w/ Tony Haynes after the game and I believe the above quote I used was from the post game presser

Here’s another quote to remember, this one from the AP wire report:

“N.C. State returned the second near the goal line, setting up a second TD run from Eugene that delighted the thousands of red-clad Wolfpack fans crowded into a corner of Kenan.”

” N.C. State embarrasses No. 25 UNC at Chapel Hill”

Thousands of red-clad fans … soo awesome … What’s all that noise again from the media about how our fans are???

  3. EverettBeez 11/22/2008 at 4:56 PM #

    Soooo happy! Total domination.
My Carolina buds were also talking very confidently, while I was cautiously confident. Wow – wow – wow!

Ok, so Ole Miss is up. I am calling the Trifecta – State, Ole Miss, TTech all victors today.

^Yes, guns up … Go Red Raiders tonight … enough of the elitist old guard already … LET’S GET A FREAKING PLAYOFF

  5. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 4:59 PM #

I can remember back, way back, to just yesterday, when all I was hearing from the powder blue crowd was that, well, you know. Funny how things can change so rapidly, the game wasn’t even over and I’d heard it eight times already…

“I don’t really care anyway, I’m just waiting for basketball.”

    You gotta LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wilson is a an absolute lock for ROY & 1st team all ACC QB. With a win over Miami, he should win POY.

The difference between Russell Wilson & Charlie Ward is that Wilson’s best professional sport is baseball while Ward’s was basketball. Without Wilson, I honestly believe we would be sitting at 2 -9 now.

Revenge for the free expression attack, oh and BTW….we certainly DO NOT want Amato back. He did his job and built us up to where TOB could kick up a notch and trash the BabyBlueBostages.

On ESPN — “The team with the most consistent quarterback play will win the ACC. The problem is, the only team at the moment with consistent quarterback play is Russell Wilson for the resurgent NC State Wolfpack.”

  9. BJD95 11/22/2008 at 5:27 PM #

I haven’t seen an individual player have more of an impact than Russell Wilson. It’s not even close. He should be POY.

  10. BAC79 11/22/2008 at 5:28 PM #

Just a good ole fashioned ass whooping.

  11. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 5:37 PM #

    The Ice Man Cometh!

Russell Wilson is one of those RARE talents that can see downfield, stay calm and cool enough, then execute with flawless precision, even with everything else that’s happening right under his own nose. I haven’t seen too many college players who have stepped into ANY position, in ANY sport, with the poise and understated confidence that that kid has shown. I don’t know how anyone could have played better than he did today. As a matter of fact, there is more than one player in the receiving corps that needs thank RW for saving their a** today. He just kept on coming back, making one beautiful throw right after another, so fast that the coaching staff didn’t have time to dwell on any one of the poor efforts in receiving. I suspect those receivers will be getting an ear full when they review the game film though.

Not that I’m complaining, but that score could have been pushing 60 points, if the receivers would have given Wilson some more help.

Anyone notice at dusk how the sky turned “N C State” RED?

  13. Jamie 11/22/2008 at 5:38 PM #

My answer to the babyblue post about the last TD being necessary? I feel it was long overdue sweet revenge for Ty Lawsons last second dunk at the end of the ACC championship game. Finally, we are on the giving end of an ass whooping.

  14. BAC79 11/22/2008 at 5:42 PM #

Total domination. I love it. TOB and RW and the defense, a potent combination.

  15. highstick 11/22/2008 at 5:46 PM #

From Inside Crakolina regarding State scoring that last touchdown”

“However, it was our Sr Day and I just don’t see the need to add insult to injury in that situation. Think of how bad the players feel. It’s already bad enough we have to lose”

    YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!

Where’s our little female reporter who is in “love with those pine tree”?

  16. highstick 11/22/2008 at 5:47 PM #

I’d bet John Bunting is really getting a good laugh now!

  17. Texpack 11/22/2008 at 5:50 PM #

This was sweet. When you get to answer the birthday call from your State graduate Dad “How ’bout that Wolfpack!”, it has been a very good day. Now I’m greedy. Bowl eligible win one more win. Hopefully a trip to Houston or Shreveport.

Just got back from the game… a few thoughts/observations:

    1) As always we had a great, great time with our UNC friends. My UNC wife, she got a little much to listen to, but she didn’t have much to say after about… well… kickoff.

    2) Speaking of kickoff, a UNC a few rows behind us heckled the refs on the freaking kickoff penalty call. He went off. I laughed, turned around, looked at him, laughed again, and said “Damn. That didn’t take long. I do love coming to Chapel Hill.” The Carolina fans right around us started laughing even.

    3) Speaking of the fans around us, we had a big time, laughed, cheered, high-fived. I heard not one serious cross word. Even leaving the stadium the fans were congratulatory. It was just an awesome, awesome day.

    4) Russell Wilson is simply put: poised. He makes plays and few mistakes. Even some of his incomplete passes in bounds were just smart, smart throws. On third and long he hit a tight end in the knees with a rocket who was double teamed. No one could make that catch minus a miracle but it was so much better than a turnover. Honestly, he’s much more poised than Rivers until his senior year if ever. There is an old doctor who sits in front of my friends who we really enjoy talking to every game. He said: “That young man is about as poised a football player as I’ve ever seen here in Kenan.” He followed that with: “And I’m really, really old and I’ve seen a lot of football in this place.” Is there any better compliment for a player… respect from a hated rival’s fan base?

(Side note: Deacs just got a chop block penalty. Shocker.)

    5) The Wolfpack offered a strong presence and it was nice. Obviously the place cleared out about the start of the 4th quarter and it was just really, really great to see all the red.

    6) Cans of nuts and Merry Christmases and all that… it would have been nice had Russell, Nate, and the rest of the guys been able to play every game. We’ve got a strong, balanced football team… we just have no depth. That will come.

    7) Highlight of the day for me: Going down to the track and getting the Ramsies mascot to take a picture with us. The picture is just fantastic. Then I thanked him, tried to hug it out and he refused. The State folks in the fans booed him. It was quite funny.

    8) Speaking of booing and I’ll end with this, when the UNC fans booed Yates I was shocked. We might be crazy about our sports that don’t ever seem to get over the hump, but State fans have never turned on a player that fast.

    9) Okay, last thing really, kudos to Owen Spencer for his TD. After two big drops today he shook it off and hauled in a big, back-breaking TD. I was extremely happy for that kid.

Who knows the ultimate, final benefit a statement win like this will mean for our program. Congratulations to all the players and staff. They deserve it.

The threat of a potent running game, along with RW’s ability to move around and create, kept the ewe’s DL honest, but I can’t say enough about the OL play today. I swear, there were a few times when Wilson seemed to have all day to throw the ball or either a wide open lane to pull it down and run when he needed.

Great play all the way around!!!

  20. Wolfpack F-14 11/22/2008 at 6:03 PM #

First, What a great game today by the entire team!! RW looked great and the Defense really stepped up. I am hoping that old Butchy is looking a little closer at that Tennessee job.

To answer someones question earlier I beleive the last time anyone beat all the other in state teams was 1986.

    go pack!!!

  21. turfpack 11/22/2008 at 6:05 PM #

    Anybody question TOB coaching now?

If so ,shut the F#$% UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ass whippings are always fun but of the baby blue it’s the best.

  22. redfred2 11/22/2008 at 6:06 PM #

I agree GA, I have to give the coaching staff, RW, and everyone credit for continuing to throw to Spenser, I don’t know if I would have. You could tell he was carrying the weight of the world, and pretty much deservedly so, before catching that TD pass. Good for him, that SHOULD help him, and us, in the future.

“Mike Archer deserves alot of credit, too. He’s worked miracles with our defense. And his “laughingstock” motivational ploy seems to have paid off in spades.”

    BJD95,
For us old farts who can’t remember squat, agian, what was his “laughingstock” motivational ploy?

Took my two boys to the game today w/ seats on the UNX side – we had a blast. A few comments:

    1) In general we had no issues w/ the UNX fans, they were very gracious considering. That said, the only fan I saw who was any trouble was a UNX fan about 5 rows in front of me who actually had to be escorted out by the police early in Q3 (He wouldn’t leave for the security guy).
    2) A lot of their fans left pretty early in the 3rd – when the game could have still be won. I was a little shocked.
    3) There were lots of State fans around it – it was pretty much a party from late in the 3rd on.
    4) On the way out, the State band came marching up the road and literally engulfed our car. My boys were hanging out the windows yelling and getting “high fives” while the drums and sousaphones were literally dancing in the intersection in front of us.

On the “should they have scored a TD” question linked to, I read through the comments a lot of them were of “we should have stopped them” variety…nice to see them taking a little medicine without too much crying!

To wrap up = it was a great game. Go Pack!

During the bye week, he said NC State was the laughingstock of the ACC. Think he was referencing just the defense.
