New D.C. bowl has N.C. State on its radar

May said the EagleBank “would love” to have N.C. State, in part because the bowl would be only a five-hour drive from Raleigh and would be accessible for Wolfpack fans. He said the bowl expects Navy to bring a strong crowd. Of course, Tom O’Brien’s status as an alumnus of Navy certainly doesn’t hurt the story line.

ESPN”s Heather Dinich has gone so far as to predict that the Wolfpack will represent the ACC in the EagleBank Bowl (link).

NC STATE

Why they’ll make it: Quarterback Russell Wilson. He has been the difference in the Pack’s three-game winning streak. The defense, though, has also been better as NC State has not allowed 20 or more points during the streak. Also, because it’s playing for bowl eligibility, which Miami already has, and again, home-field advantage.

Why they won’t: The defense will struggle to stop Miami’s numerous playmakers, and the Hurricanes will be able to execute a balanced offense against the Pack. Miami is also looking to redeem itself from an embarrassing loss to Georgia Tech.

PREDICTION

NC State will represent the ACC in the Eagle Bank Bowl, and for the first time in conference history, the league will have nine bowl-eligible teams.

That would be great, but we gotta take care of business with Miami and saturday. i hope we don’t overlook that game because we’re still hype about smoking unc.

  2. Alpha Wolf 11/25/2008 at 11:53 AM #

Yep — just take care of business against Miami.

This is a critical game in the arc of the program. I say that because if we win, we practice our redshirted players until the bowl game and that will pay off next season in spring and fall practices and help us get off to a better start from the first game on.

  3. WolftownVA81 11/25/2008 at 12:05 PM #

That would be fantastic. If NCSU gets selected, we are definately going.

I’ve been watching that bowl since I read about it in the newspaper up here last summer. RFK is a great stadium. I’d love to see the Pack play there. Of course it doesn’t hurt that its 45 min from my house, and finding a babysitter would be a lot easier. Let’s just take care of miami, and see where we end up.

I would love to go to the new DC bowl but my hunch is that if we win Saturday, it will be surprising how attractive we are going to be to a number of the ACC bowls higher up the picking order. Since no team in the league is going to have a league record of better than 5 – 3, bowls will not be prohibited from taking us over anyone. You just cannot overstate how big the Miami game is for the program.

The Dinich kiss of death. Great.

    FSU – 5-3
Everyone else in the Atlantic 4-4
That’s a real, if not likely, possibility. If so, we jump Wake in the head to head. Also, say UNC loses at Duke, Bowl Rep’s could move us up the ladder. We were the “worst” team in the Atlantic, and we’ve won ALL THREE of our Coastal Div. games! The coastal is not going to look much different than the Atlantic, and we are playing extremely well when it counts. NTM, we travel like the Roman Army!

  8. Classof89 11/25/2008 at 1:49 PM #

isn’t it the conventional wisdom among bowl scouts that we are the 4th or 5th best traveling team in the ACC? (behind Clemson, VaTech, FSU, and, maybe, Maryland)?

  9. FullMoonRising 11/25/2008 at 2:07 PM #

I see these articles and I am relishing the utter domination of UNC. I think I want to get “I ‘heart’ Ruth” tatooed on my forearm. But please, can we not get too excited? I just want our team to focus and focus and then focus some more on the game this weekend. Everyone else, pray that Duke takes UNC and flushes what’s left of their pride down the toilets in Wallace Wade.

Heather Dinich has been trashing us as long as I can remember, and she’s now jumped on the “Russell Wilson bandwagon” like she’s been behind us all along. I can’t stand her. I’m not saying I’d rather her be a NCSU homer, but at the same time, I feel like she has embraced the UNX run since Butch Davis was signed. To be fair…she pales in comparison to one Woody “The effin’ Devil” Durham.

FullMoon, I have a bad feeling those troughs would overflow in WW. Hell…they already have.

The most important thing is for the team to take care of business Saturday. If we win I predict all sorts of glorious possibilities for a bowl along with the benefit of the extra practice time for the redshirts.
After Saturday there is ample time to worry about where we could go.
I’m feeling positive but the onus is on the team (coaches and players) to step up to the next level.
Finally some optimistic thoughts from outside of the lunatic fringe.

  13. Scooter 11/25/2008 at 2:24 PM #

Before we even think about a bowl, this team has to finish the fight this weekend. Its a big game against a solid opponent and it can’t be taken lightly by the players. We can’t take our collective foot off of the proverbial gas pedal.

  14. ppack3 11/25/2008 at 2:48 PM #

No Clem Johnson hurts. Though, Byers played well in his abscence in the second half at UNC. I am a TOB beleiver. I think we are in a much better situation than we were last year versus UMD. That said, I don’t want to jump the gun about where we may go, but forgive me, I’m excited about the future of NC State football! To me, predictions, over-analyzation, talking smack, etc. are the things fans do! The coaches’ job is to get the team ready to play. Our job is to get excited, not to sit around holding our collective breath. The Eagle Bank Bowl would be awesome. I grew up a Redskins fan, and would love to see a NCSU game in RFK. Also, TOB v. Navy! It’s too perfect. Short drive. On the weekend. Sorry, I’m getting excited again. Hmmmmmmmmm….Hmmmmmmmmm…!

    Classof89:

No way MD travels better than us. I live in the DC area and went to their game. It was cold and pooring all game. Not a single student was left in the 4th quarter, save some Pack fans. They are average fans and care more about b-ball. They are also disgusting. Western Blvd. is like looking up Yasmine Bleath’s skirt compared to College Park which is more like looking up Hillary Clinton’s.

Also not sure that NC State wouldn’t be the best traveling team in the ACC once we start competing for ACC championships. Remember how crazy it was during 2002? If we get that consistently, its on!

  16. TOBtime 11/25/2008 at 3:10 PM #

packalum44, that comparison would just about make you puke.

SUPPOSEDLY Notre Dame travels well (or at least as good as anyone in the country) but there was ALOT more red than gold at our meeting in the Gator Bowl!

New saying from a friend (and alum) today:

    Tom O’Brien – handing out Butch-slaps since 2007.

You have never heard crying like you’ll hear if we get picked for a bowl over the pansy heels.

That may be so, but how long the fans stay in the stadium for a rainy home game doesn’t really have anything to do with how well a team travels, does it? How many did Maryland take to their Orange/Peach/Gator bowls in 2001, ’02, and ’03?

I understand that coaches are for focus and preparation and that fans are for rowdy, smack-talk, but let’s keep in mind what’s at stake. We will either be having these conversations times 10 on Saturday . . . OR . . . be done at 5-7 (3-5). THERE’S STILL A LOT OF WORK LEFT FOR THIS FOOTBALL TEAM TO DO!

On another note, Davidson beat Winthrop last Friday 97-70. Is that matchup along with our performance/outcome tonight a good benchmark for how we might do against Davidson?

  19. EverettBeez 11/25/2008 at 6:17 PM #

    Point of Order or Clarification-
I posted dates of the Music City & Charlotte bowls before I left work. It said something about waiting for approval. Did they not get approved? Am I on double-secrete probation?

SFN: For some unknown reason the comment got hung up in our filter

  20. SuperStuff 11/25/2008 at 7:56 PM #

I just want to beat Miami and Duke to pummel UNC-CH. Personally I don’t think any team with a 6-6 record should be bowling, but I suppose that is an indication we have too many bowls. A bowl selection group would hate to ask a UNC-CH team on a 3 game losing streak to their town, but they’ll do it anyway because they have to have somebody. Like I said too many bowls.

In a related note, Pat Forde at ESPN points out that State has the 4th toughest schedule in the nation, after 3 other ACC teams…

“The ACC (24). The Dash has bashed the league plenty and doesn’t apologize for that. But it’s time to point out that the ACC has achieved a true rarity: zero terrible teams. The flip side is zero excellent teams, but at least everyone ranks in Sagarin’s top 55. This is the Lake Woebegone League: everyone is above average. And, it should be noted, the league has the four national leaders in strength of schedule. In order: Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State.”

State has beaten 3 “ranked at the time” teams in EZU, WF and UNX. (Wouldn’t you love to have that South Florida game again, with RW at QB.)And they are a team on the rise. The Miami game is a great opportunity to continue the trend.

Charger “be done at 5-7 (3-5). THERE’S STILL A LOT OF WORK LEFT FOR THIS FOOTBALL TEAM TO DO!”

No doubt the game is huge for the program but we shouldn’t focus on State’s early season problems. State started a red-shirt freshman against SC on national television. The score was 0-0 when Wilson left the game. This was followed by a comedy of errors that killed the pack.

State pulled out a win over W&M without Wilson. Wilson returned for a tough game against Clemson. Followed by ECU win, USF offensive powerhouse early in the game followed by heavy rain.

The next three games State played well but not good enough, leading FSU in the fourth only to be beat by a 50+ yard field goal. Not to mention being close with BC.

State got healthy against Duke and the Freshman QB now had 5 games experience and looks like one of the best QB’s in the ACC and helps leads the Pack to 3 straight wins.

My point is don’t get caught up in the record. State is getting better as the year goes on for the first time in years. The O line was awful this time last year and now they are giving Wilson plenty of protection.

State is limiting turnovers and the awful 15 yard penalties that seemed very common in years past.

BTW don’t worry about State bball tonight. They are doing just fine.

Carter-Finley needs to ROCK on Saturday! What an awesome game this is going to be!

  24. tvp1 11/26/2008 at 8:49 AM #

We need to win; we also need help.

If both Clemson and Wake win, then we CANNOT go to any of the ACC tie-in bowls and will be hoping to snag an at-large somewhere. That’s because there will be 9 ACC teams with winning records. There must be a spot for all teams with winning records in the league tie-in bowls for a 6-6 team to get picked for a bowl.

Now, say Clemson loses and Wake wins (and we win). We could get picked ahead of Wake, or for that matter anyone else, because there would only be 8 teams with winning records and 9 slots – thus every team with a winning record would be guaranteed a slot.

  25. packer74 11/26/2008 at 9:09 AM #

Need to win the game vs. Miami and then talk about post season. A matchup with Navy would be interesting as they beat Wake in Winston-Salem.
