Wilson Stakes Claim; Wake up this weekend

A lot has been (deservedly) made of the fantastic play of NC State’s red shirt freshman quarterback, Russell Wilson.

Wilson has performed better than almost anyone could have dreamed this season and has therefore promised to make the quarterback competition with freshman Mike Glennon interesting to watch in the future. (What a nice ‘problem’ to have).

Wilson is playing so well that our own BJD walked the line of heresy without raising much ire by making the following comment after the Wolfpack’s win over Duke this weekend:

Russell Wilson made plays with his legs and arm. He’s getting better at using his mobility to buy time for receivers to break open, rather than always choosing to tuck and run. You may consider this heresy, but I believe he’s playing better and smarter than Philip Rivers in his freshman year (of course, he didn’t have the luxury of a redshirt).

This week, The Big Tailgate’s Dan Mason penned a blog entry focusing on this past weekend’s win and Wilson’s strong play that can be read by clicking here.

While the Wolfpack will likely finish under .500, they guy who has brought considerable headaches and attention to defensive coordinators across the ACC footprint is Russell Wilson. Once again at Duke this past weekend, Wilson demonstrated why he continues to be a beacon of hope for Wolfpack fans. His poise in the pocket for a red-shirt freshman is terrific. He feels pressure very well and understands where his go to targets are at all times. Don’t get me wrong. Wolfpack receivers made some outstanding plays to go up and get some balls this past Saturday but Wilson knows what he has on the edges and the playmakers they are.

Additionally, the guys at ACCNow have their weekly podcast posted and Caulton Tudor alludes to the interesting quarterback situation next year right before he says “my gut tells me that NC State wins this game (Wake Forest) this weekend.”

It’s no secret that the Wolfpack still has a chance to lay exclusive claim to the elusive mythical ‘State Championship’ with wins over Wake Forest and Carolina over the next couple of weeks. Another link to ACCNow.

Mack Brown would be so proud the concept of the “state championship” lives on 11 years after his departure from UNC.

The Wolfpack is 2-0 against in-state opponents and suddenly inspired for the next two games against Wake Forest and UNC.

On a side note, if State played Duke’s schedule, the Pack would be bowl eligible by now. And if Duke played State’s schedule, the Devils would be 3-6.

The Wolfpack kicks-off at 3:30pm on ESPNU as a 3.5 point underdog to the Demon Deacons on Saturday. With the injuries that NC State has battled this season it is always important to check the Wolfpack’s depth chart before any game. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Julian Williams name among the offensive linemen.

Yet Another has a statistical look at the match-up.

Right away you can see that Wake’s strength this season is their defense. Their offense, typically strong under Grobe, has really been lacking in production this year, especially their running game. That’s a great sign for State fans, as that plays to the strength of the Pack defense.

Wake’s passing game is the stronger than their running attack but it’s still not a world-beating unit, 80th and 61st in yardage and passing efficiency, respectively. When compared to the Pack’s pass defense, though, they still stand apart in the rankings with a better than 20-spot advantage in both categories.

The good news is that as previously injured Pack players continue to work themselves back into playing shape, the effectiveness of the Pack pass defense should improve.

The question will be can State’s offense, that looked so good in the first half against Duke, have similar success against a very stout Wake defense. The disparity in the rankings seem to suggest no, but the one chink in the Deacon armor may be their pass defense. And with Russell Wilson continuing to improve each week passing the football, State may have opportunities passing the ball downfield.

RW will be in a relatively nice position regarding baseball. He has football to use as leverage in negotiations. Two options: sign Aug 15 (deadline), and not start until the completion of the next academic year, allowing him to potentially complete a 4 year degree and compete another season in football. Some teams will permit this if it cuts down on the bonus amount. The other option is to leverage football into a larger bonus, essentially paying him to forego the second sport.

Regardless, for either scenario to play out he will need to enjoy a breakout season on the diamond. He is potential right now, and that’s about it. He’s shown flashes of being just as good as advertised, but he’ll need to put together a complete season; his at-bats are just too small a sample size at the current time to justify the type of bonus that would get him out of football.

I think Wilson enjoys the collegiate experience too much to use his first draft eligible year to simply take 20K to leave school, ride on crappy busses and stay at crappy motels.

I think Curry and a healthy Irving are the two best linebackers in the ACC. Let’s see who’s the best this Saturday. I feel good about this game but I feel good about em’ all. Will say that our team has tremendous character due to all the adversity they have faced in the past few years. Win or lose I love wolfpack football and TOB as my family. Russell is the epitome of class. Go Pack!

It shouldn’t, but this conversation irks the hell out of me. First off, we have a kid who is playing FOOTBALL right now, as redshirt freshman, he’s playing well, as if he’s already an experienced ACC QB, he is here at NCSU RIGHT NOW, and he will most likely be here for a least couple more years, so what is the big hairy rush to decide his future for him? Secondly, why is it that MOST NC State fans cannot just ENJOY the ride without beginning to worry so much about things that haven’t even happened yet?

I mean, if there is even a remote possibility that some NC State athlete has the ability to go pro, then it seems that a high number NC State fans will come busting out of the woodwork to try to GUESS when that event will occur. I might be wrong, but I honestly believe that NC State fan’s are so impatient in trying to crown one of their own as “worthy of consideration” in the professional ranks, that their own fervor only influences and contributes to some young kid’s thinking that they are ready to move on up, when the reality of it all is that they aren’t even close.

It is the epithomy of the small town, small HS hero, or the big fish, small pond, mentality. If they leave, they leave, but I’m not going to start missing Russell Wilson, or anybody else, until they’re gone. I’m also not going to blow smoke up any Wolfpack player’s butt until I see them absolutely DOMINATE, night in and night out, at the one position that they’re playing on any given team.

Like I said at the onset, this topic irks the hell out of me. Apologies for the rant.

I do get a little worried playing the durty deacs. They will bring it – and will be very physical.

Grobe has shown what you can do if you build w/ speed, character, and toughness. There’s no way Wake should have one of the more talented D’s in the conference but they do.

I stated yesterday that I’m worried about our D vs. Skinner. We’ve got to get a rush on him and wrap him up – he’s a slippery bastard who won’t give up on plays.

On paper, we should have an excellent shot in this game. Wake struggles to get in the end zone on offense and their D thrives off TO’s. If we can win the kicking game, win or break even in the TO contest, and force them to FGs, we should walk out of C-F happy.

On Irving, if Irving is undersized to play NFL linebacker, then he’s certainly fast enough to be a Ronnie Lott type safety. He’s only a sophomore, so he’s still essentially got two years to add weight.

On the Deaks, i do feel good about this game. And i feel good about this game because for once, the D played its best game of the year and the Duke team we saw was pretty good. Way better than i expected to be honest because of my past memories of Duke teams. Our offense has consistently scored against the best reams in the conference. Wake struggled with Duke and appeared to get “fortunate” turnovers in their last game to make it look worse than it was…what i like about us is our consistency. The first couple of defensive series for us will say alot i think.

I’m not really worried about Curry shadowing RW. Tauiliili is a great linebacker and shadowed RW and RW still put on a clinic.

As hard as I have been on the offensive line over the last two years, I feel obligated to give a shout out to the marketably improved play in that area and the coaching that went into it.

    BEAT WAKE. BEAT UNC.

Related coments from a WRAL article yesterday. How about 1st team ACC and honorable mention freshman All-American?

    http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/3956997/

“Dana [Bible] has done a good job researching what the offense should look like if Russell is the quarterback and what he’s able to do and highlight what his strengths are and minimize his weaknesses,” O’Brien said.

This season, Wilson leads the ACC in pass efficiency at 130.9, throwing 10 touchdowns and just one interception. His rating places him fourth among all Division I freshman quarterbacks.

Congrats to RW and the Coaches. Leading the conference in pass efficiency was not what I expected after watch his play in Columbia. This is one of the great things about college ball, watching these young men develop. Hell, its the best thing about teaching college is watching students grow.

I’ve got a good feeling about this weekend – that or the extra shot of cold medicine is kicking in –
    State wins, Ole Miss wins.

Yeah, that’s the spirit johnofsparta. That will, as a matter of fact it already is, ruining all of amateur athletics all the way around.

Since some people are so ready and willing to dismiss college athletics as no longer important or necessary at this time, let’s see now, what’s next? I wonder if a guy like RW knows of any HS kids who aren’t getting paid to play sports?
