Andrew Jones: Butch ‘Davis part II(updated)

Just ask any Tarheel fan and they will be sure to tell you that there is nothing to the story. And, of course, why would anyone ever leave Chapel Hill by their own choosing. (Shhhh…don’t mention Mack Brown).

Link to story

Tennessee has tabbed North Carolina coach Butch Davis as the leading candidate to replace ousted football coach Phillip Fulmer, multiple sources have told the News Sentinel.

Whether UT can secure Davis remains to be seen. Davis has said publicly that he is happy at North Carolina because of the family environment in Chapel Hill and the opportunity to rebuild a program that has long struggled.

If UT can’t get Davis, Mike Leach of Texas Tech and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati will become strong possibilities. Tim Brewster from Minnesota will also be considered.

Updated with article from Andrew Jones(UNC graduate if I am not mistaken):

According to sources close to the UT football program, the North Carolina football coach’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, was contacted this weekend by Tennessee representatives to discuss Davis as a possible replacement to Phillip Fulmer, who was fired last week after 17 years on the job.

Davis told the media last week that he wasn’t interested in the job and that he plans on staying at UNC. But there are conditions that Carolina must meet to ensure Davis’ tenure in Chapel Hill is a long one.

According to a source close to Davis and UNC, the coach wants a more lucrative contract and guaranteed dates for the starts and completions of each phase in Kenan Stadium’s renovation.

Sorry for the hijack, but the wolfpacker says Ruslan Pateev has scheduled a press conference. Any chance of a thread on that? Anybody have any details? I know we have offered him.

I just wonder how much this will cost and exactly how deep the rams club’s pockets are at the moment. Can they deliver and keep Roy ahead of Butch?

Huge state deficit. hiring freezes. TN picked a good time to go after Davis. I don’t think the state can justify the money Butch will demand. This will fall on the Rams club for sure.

It seems he going to leave sooner or later. The question I’ve been bugging hole fans is who is going to coach in your bowl game? This is probably the wrong year for a coach to demand many upgrades with the economy so bad and people losing jobs, etc. Aren’t they the self proclaimed ‘university of the people’?

It’ll never happen, if Butch’s head isn’t already swollen too much they’ll find a way to keep both HC’s happy, but wouldn’t it be sweet if all of this blew up in little Johnny Swofford’s face?

I think the whole facilities issue is a smoke screen to obscure the real issue of a pay raise for BD and his assistants. It will legitimize his decision to depart for TN when said upgrades can’t be guaranteed IMHO.

Fill in the Kenan endzone? 8,800 new seats? Now that’s funny.

How in the world can you see the pine trees if you enclose the stadium!!! What a travesty! Heather Dinich, are you listening???? Now certainly this will hurt recuiting, hurt the fans, hurt Butch’s view from his office, and hurt the “Is it b-ball season yet atmosphere?”

I can’t wait for the empty stands on Saturday. Carolina has a bball game at 4pm, so I’m betting by halftime (win or losing) throngs of baby blue will be hightailing it to the Dome.

Those empty stands should help Davis think a little….

One other interesting aspect about this – was reading in the News Distuber this AM that both the Heels football and basketball teams play at the same time on Saturday, and GASP! what are the fans to do? How they can do both? What a shame the general public must choose this terrible plight.

Butch, if you want to know where your future lies, find out how many fans could care less about FB now that BB has started. If only they were both home games, the Dean Dome would be sold out and Kenan would have 20K empty seats.

^ What’s your point. There will still be the same amount of people in Kenan (give or take 5,000). 🙂

“According to a source close to Davis and UNC, the coach wants a more lucrative contract and guaranteed dates for the starts and completions of each phase in Kenan Stadium’s renovation.”

This says he wants to stay. I heard they were going to rename to Davis Stadium.

Hard to believe that our program has as many wins as UT this year… Who would have thunk it?

    Alpha Wolf says,
“Davis is sort of like a hooker and he’ll run off to bed with the highest bidder.”

There is no need to be insulting hookers here. 😉

I just can’t imagine a stadium referred to as “Butch Davis Stadium”

    Yuck.

  17. Scooter 11/11/2008 at 4:06 PM #

I bet UT is wishing they had scheduled us now!!!

  18. redfred2 11/11/2008 at 4:24 PM #

If they name it Butch Stadium, won’t the other half of the uni-student population feel somehow left out?

I’d figure more then half would get their panties in a wad redfred2.

I’m fairly close to projects in and around Kenan. I can tell you that there is a considerable push to get dates on the expansion projects and they are indeed moving forward. The money is not even there yet, but they are most certainly moving forward according to the UNC people.

Folks, this is going to get interesting.

Not really a place for it, but worth noting that NC State’s men’s soccer team picked up a win in the ACC Tournament today, beating VT 3-1 for the chance to play undefeated national #1 Wake Forest tomorrow.

Tarantini has taken a lot of crap for the malaise of the program, and rightly so, but the team really seems to have turned around this year (including a win at Duke)–albeit probably too late to earn a tournament bid if they lose tomorrow.

I know it’s not the first thing on everyone’s minds, but the game’s at 5:30 tomorrow, in Cary only a few miles away from campus. Be good for them to have some support.

Asked yet again about his rumored interest in the open head coach position at the University of Tennessee, Butch Davis gave a definitive answer on Wednesday morning.

“I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the University of Tennessee job,” Davis said on Wednesday’s ACC teleconference. “It’s a great job, but I have no interest in it.

“I’ve said for the last couple of weeks that I love being here and my family loves being at Carolina. We’re building with the administration everything we can every single day to build a championship football program here.”

When asked if Tennessee had contacted him or his agent, Jimmy Sexton, Davis replied, “No.”
