Game Thread: State Opens Against New Orleans In Hoops

Here’s a free audio link of the UNO play-by-play, and the game is on Pack Pass as well.

FINAL SCORE: NCSU 65 New Orleans 59

Note: be sure to scroll to the bottom to see ESPN’s scoreboard.  HT: MillerHighLife on PackPride.

0:14.1 64-59 Gonzalez to the line for two.  First shot: good.  Second shot: no good.

0:29.3 Costner — First shot: good.  63-57.  Second shot: good 64-57

0:29.3 left, 62-57 State to the line for two.  These could ice it.  TO UNO

0:44 62-57

1:10 60-55, State ball.  McCauley fouled on the shot. First shot, swish. Second shot, good.  62-55 60 ticks left.

1:46 State ball, State timeout, 60-55.

2:07 McCauley to the line, makes the first, then misses the second, but State keeps the ball.  60 – 55.

2:26 State 59 – UNO 55.

3:02 59 – 53 State, UNO ball after a turnover.

4:00 57 – 51 Pack.

7:57 Still 48-40 State.  State’s D is forcing UNO to take contested shots and the Pack is still outrebounding the Privateers.  The UNO network is really griping about the refereeing, but that seems to be the way it is on every radio network.  At least their play by play guy tells the score and time, something Gary Hahn ought to learn how to do.

9:16 State 48 – UNO 40 – State takes a :30 TO, UNO to line for 1 and 1.

10:22 State 48 – UNO 38

PACK IS IN THE BONUS the rest of the way.

11:49 NCSU 44 – UNO 38 — State is letting these guys hang around, but UNO has five team fouls and isn’t hitting everything they see anymore.

15:49 NCSU 35- UNO 33 — UNO is coming back to Earth a little, but NCSU is missing their share.

18:30 NCSU 33 – UNO 31

Fells is having a crappy game, IMO.  19:30 he’s called for palming after State has a chance to take the lead.  Then Trevor Ferguson backs it up with a foul.

HALFTIME NCSU 31- UNO 31

1:14 UNO 31 – NCSU 29

State is 9-23 and Costner has 13.

It’s wierd hearing the game being played on Corchiani Court, and UNO’s announcers are talking about it being a “special night.”

2:30 UNO 29 – NCSU 26

5:00 UNO 22 NCSU 20

7:28 UNO 19 NCSU 15

12:55 first half: UNO 9 – NC State 5 in a sloppy game where UNO is getting all the breaks…so far.

I would agree if that wasn’t the excuse last year, at this time.

Afterglow’s insight and this quote by Wolfbrew are much appreciated:
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“If even half the balls that rimmed out had gone in, State would have put the game away early.”
    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Just listening on radio, it sounded as if a lot of shots rimmed out. I’m hoping that this ‘tighter than it should have been game’ was due to, 1) platooning for experience’ and 2) an ‘off-shooting night’ that we still happened to win on the road.

MOST appreciated of all was that when things were tight and the game on the line, the guys dug down and focused on their defensive assignments to lock down the W. That was such a rare occurance last year. That’s the best indicator of all of hope for the year.

It feels like a lot happened last year: poor conditioning, injuries, discord amongst the players and hurt feelings.

I’m not saying that we’re not seeing some of the same crap we saw last year. I guess I’m reserving some faith that perhaps it looks similar to last year do to early season jitters and rust and that it will improve with time provided the aforementioned situations don’t play out this year. For right now, I will use the four letter word hope however, if necessary, as time proceeds, I will resort to other four letter words.

State just does not have an ACC backcourt. Until State gets an ACC backcourt, State will struggle.

You can yell at your guards all you want, run them until they collapse, do whatever you want, but you can’t yell and run and make Degand or Gonzalez into Chris Corchiani or yell and run and make Fergs into Rodney Monroe. Those guys try pretty hard, they just weren’t born with a tremendous amount of talent.

State can be big competitors in a lot of games based on hustle and heart, but State is not going to win a lot of big games until they have an ACC backcourt in place.

That can only be changed through recruiting. Hopefully, John Wall will join Lo Brown and start that move toward change. We’ll see…

I would agree that Degand and Gonzales are not ACC caliber point guards and few are ever near the likes of a Lowe or a Corchiani of their time or a Rose etc of this era. However, I believe we’ll be ok if they (Degand and Gonzales) play unspectacular, mistake free basketball. That service can be delivered through consistent, heady play, similar to Engin Atsur. There are enough good parts on this team to orchestrate some gutty “hustle and heart” wins here and there and potentially put us into some type of post season play.

Don’t know if any of you guys are watching URI-Duke, but it’s a good thing for Duke that their guys in the stripes showed up at the gym today …

URI completely dominated the first half, was up by 12 prior to an 11-0 run to close to the half for Duke that made it 34-33 URI – and oh yeah … Duke was freaking 15-16 from the line in the first half despite trailing the entire half

It’s 57-52 URI w/ about 12 to play in the second half … There are two teams on the floor, and the best team is not named Duke … but I don’t have any doubt that Duke will go to the line 30+ more times in the 2nd half and I think that’s just disgusting

Anyway, Duke appears to turning into the Notre Dame of college basketball b/c it looks to me that they are severely overrated – again … Either that or URI is going to the Final 4 b/c they are simply outclassing the Devils right now

Congrats on the win. State had won the game with 2:07 to play in the game and that ain’t bad. Give the team November to grow and as long as they win we shouldn’t complain.

Valvano didn’t always cruise through the early season.

I don’t know what NO’s roster looks like this year but I know last year they had like 6 guards and that isn’t a good match-up for the current Wolfpack team.

Last year at this time State was 0-1 this year 1-0. Isn’t it great bball is back? Even if we have to wait 7 days for the next game, after that we get games every 3 or 4 days. Sail with the Pilot!

  9. Trip 11/16/2008 at 6:01 PM #

Not too much to say… PG play needs to improve and the shooting WAS atrocious in the first half. A lot of balls rimmed out, and they were good open shots as well.

  10. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:20 PM #

Singler has been dunked on and had several 3’s nailed in his face yet turns around talks junk to the nearest Ram every time he does something positive … He seems pretty determined to take on the mantle of “Most Hated Dukie” … He’s acting like a true f*g today, shocking that he plays for Duke … Anyone else would’ve been warned or T’d up by now, but hey – he plays for Duke

For those interested, it’s 74-70 URI w/ about 3:30 to play, but the refs just “missed” a pretty obvious kick ball on URI’s last possession … Duke gets a fast break, naturally, and Scheyer-face will be on the line to cut it the lead to 2 coming out of the last official timeout

  11. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:23 PM #

Ok, if you’ve got ESPNU you should really turn the game on right now … URI has this kid named Baron who has nailed every 3 I’ve seen him put up and it has come against tight D – It’s really something and I’m enjoying every second of it as it is coming against Duke

Edit: Oh yeah, it’s 77-74 URI w/ 2:34 to play

  12. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:26 PM #

    77-76 URI w/ 1:45 to play … URI ball

Duke has 12 more free throw attempts than URI just in case you were wondering

  13. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:28 PM #

Duke now leads by 1 …

URI going to the line for 2 w/ :33 left

First is good – it’s tied

  14. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:31 PM #

URI makes 2 free throws to go up by 1

URI guy very cleanly strips Singler but is called for a foul … Singler of course makes both free throws and Duke leads by 1 … The ref had his mind made up to call a foul as soon as Singler started driving … unreal

    No justice if Duke wins

  15. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:32 PM #

URI timeout w/ 10 seconds to play down by 1 …

of course Duke will win … what was I thinking … It is illegal to outplay Duke

  16. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:35 PM #

    Here we go …

Duke will win … such bullsh*t … I hope those a**clowns at least know that they are fortunate to have 3 guys w/ stripes to have their backs at all times

  17. wufpup76 11/16/2008 at 6:41 PM #

    Duke 82 – URI 79 Final

URI now knows how it feels to outplay a team yet still lose if they didn’t know before …

  18. choppack1 11/16/2008 at 8:29 PM #

This is the perfect example of why it’s been so hard for me to enjoy basketball. The officiaiting has way too big an impact.

  19. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 11/16/2008 at 11:13 PM #

choppack1- This is why Lou Bellou, Lenny Wertz and the rest should hold the same respect in the ‘NC Sports Hall of Fame’ as Smith and Sloan. These guys always play roll in the outcome of a game.

  20. Rick 11/17/2008 at 7:47 AM #

Yeah URI got screwed. THat explains their 100+ wins vs 4 losses to non ranked opponenets at home (what a stupid stat that they kept putting up).

As for the Pack. You are not going to win many games when your starting back court has 0 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. It is going to be a long year.

Everyone needs to read Shooting Guards post made yesterday at 5:26.

Actually, write it down on a post card and pull it out and read it once a week throughout the season and your lives will be much better off.

  22. Trip 11/17/2008 at 9:50 AM #

“but the refs just “missed” a pretty obvious kick ball on URI’s last possession ”

Wait a second… didn’t we get one of those calls against us last year as well? I remember Paulus STEPPING on the ball and kicking it forward and the refs just let the fast break happen. I’m just glad I was able to see Javi knock the crap out of Paulus a few times. That kid won my heart when he did that.

I don’t expect very much from this team this year. But I’ve said that I will give Lowe a one-year pass on any complaints from me. I agree with Shooting Guard. Until we get a backcourt, there’s little point gnashing the teeth.

  24. ryebread 11/17/2008 at 10:32 AM #

Bubba: I concur and have said as much. We need more talent at our guard spots. College basketball is controlled by the guards. We’ll need guard play in order to win. This is where our recruiting the first two years has really left me scratching my head.

Choppack: I agree and have been saying that for the last 5-6 years. By allowing so much physical play, I think the college bball game has been wrecked. The refs control the outcome far too much at this point. Teams routinely get jobbed — particularly when playing Duke. I’ve also argued that this hurts the ACC in the NCAA tournament. Suddenly Duke isn’t as protected (i.e. allowed to foul and then having touch fouls called the other way) and they become a pretty easy out. Football has become far more enjoyable to me.

  25. redfred2 11/17/2008 at 12:44 PM #

So, the announcers calling the game were way off base and didn’t know what they were talking about, when they said that the team looked “flat”. I know I wasn’t there, maybe some of you were, but I was just going by what was being reported on the radio.

I am FOR Sidney Lowe as much as anyone around here, but no matter what anyone says regarding the amount of the talent that he has, or does not have, to work with, I do expect to see a team that comes into games ready to play, with energy and passion from the very first whistle, whether they hit another basket or win another game for the rest of the season. The coach, as well as the players, should know that they are under a microscope right when they walk into any arena right now.

And going strictly off what the announcers said anyway, that did not seem to be the case in New Orleans on Saturday.
