ESPN: Tennessee’s Fulmer Stepping Down At End of The Season

carousel.jpgThe Rumor Mill just got officially interesting for Butch Davis and David Cutcliffe:

ESPN.com: Sources: Fulmer To Step Down

Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Volunteers’ coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Questions immediately come to mind:

  • Will Butch Davis not officially express an interest in the job, and get a big raise either way?  Jimmy Sexton, his agent, says Davis is very happy where he is, but truth is, schools like UT and others will be asking, and those questions could prove very expensive for UNC.  If they want to remain relevant in football they will likely need to keep the Chief at pretty much whatever price it costs.  This could be an annual thing for a few years for Carolina.
  • Will David Cutcliffe leave Duke after bringing back their program from the dead in less than a year?  Cutclife has big ties to UT, and of course his mentoring of a pair of brothers at QB who turned out to be a pretty good pros…Eli and Peyton someone-or-other.
  • Will Tom O’Brien’s name be mentioned in the flood of rumors for big-time jobs?  After all, in the eyes of the national media, we are “just NC State.”  Not that anything says O’Brien wants to leave Raleigh — but he is still thought of as one of the best coaches in the game.
  • Will Auburn fire Tommy Tuberville sooner rather than later, so as not to be left with picking through coaching leftovers?  Arch-rival Alabama is #1 and is absolutely dominating the region in recruiting.  Auburn needs to shake things up or will become an afterthought in their own state.
  • How many different schools will Jim Grobe turn down this year?
  • Will Tommy Bowden get another marquee head-coaching job in the sure-to-be-crazy coaching carousel?
  • Will ECU be able to keep Skip Holtz, even though the Pirate Captain’s team has underperformed this year?
  • Has Steve Spurrier gotten tired of playing golf in Columbia — and will he pack up his sticks and go someplace else for an even bigger payday?  It’s safe to say that SoCar has yet to scare many important teams in the SEC, but still the Offensive-Genius-That-Is-Spurrier still has a lot of credibilty, right now anyway, and it might be tempting to go for one last major payday before he hits the links for good.

After the little matter of the national election tomorrow (in which we hope you’ve voted), things are going to get very, very interesting in college football between now and the bowl games.

If I were Tennessee, I would think that I could do a little better than David Cutcliffe. Yeah, he’s doing a nice job at Dook, but I think that if I ran off a coach with a national title, I ought to aim a little higher.

Butch Davis would be on my list. And if I was Butch Davis, yes, Tennessee would be far…FAR more attractive than UNC. I would say it was very comparable to the Mack Brown/Texas stuff. Except Knoxville is nowhere near as nice a place as Austin.

If I was TN, I would not take Cutliffe. If I was Butch Davis, I would not take TN. UNC with its basketball glory, money, facilities, academic reputation, and the “ease of the ACC” is pretty attractive as long as they answer the ante every time. TN should go for a coach like Mike Leach. Clemson should have gotten Paul Johnson. I will leave NCSU out of it.

Gotta wonder if Butch’s agent will get him another raise. What about Steve Kragthorpe at Tulsa? Didn’t he win Conference USA last year and his offense ranks in the top five in points scored this year. Has solid bowl win over Fresno State last year as well.

  4. choppack1 11/03/2008 at 12:13 PM #

SuperStuff – Kraglethorpe is at Louisville right now in his 2nd season there. His results at the ‘Ville have yet to equal or even come close to his predecessor.

TOB will probably not be mentioned in a lot of these debates until he starts winning more. Granted, if we win our last 4, suddenly everyone is talking about him. Until then, no AD will touch due to a fan bases likely reaction to hiring a coach who has had 2 straigh losing seasons.

Butch will likely face an interesting decision. I would think that it all depends on what Butch wants:
Does he want to deal w/ pressure and facing the best teams in the country on a regular basis (SEC), playing football in the calderon that is the ACC or does he want to stay in Chapel Hill?

You can certainly say that you can build a national contender in Chapel Hill. The biggest difference is that in one conference you are going up against coaches who have acheived great things on a weekly basis (the SEC) – 4 national title winners in Meyer, Miles, Saban and Spurrier -and playing in the most intense venues in sport. In the other, you are going up against smaller schools, and 3 football schools. UNC offers a unique coaching job – where you can acheive great things w/out much pressure.

I agree that UT will shoot higher than Cutcliffe. That may not be a good decision but the Vols are not going to be comfortable handing the keys to a guy that hasn’t really established himself as a successful HC. Personally, I wouldn’t hold Ole Miss against Cutcliffe but I’m not a Vol fan.

As an established HC who is having an up year, Davis will and should be mentioned for some big jobs. However, I happen to agree with the idea that a good program in the ACC has a better shot at longevity & the NC than a great program in the SEC. As such, I see Davis as a better fit at Clemson than at UT. The big plus for UNC is that it pays and has zero expectations relative to UT, Auburn or Clemson.

If I’m Clemson, I’m hoping for Auburn to fire Tubberville so that I can snatch him up. That guy can flat out coach FOOTBALL and, given a clean sheet, he should be able to find a decent OC. It’s beyond me how anyone can have Tubby’s record at Auburn and be in trouble. Talk about lack of perspective.

You have to think that the head men at Mizzou, OKSt, TT & Boise St will get some pub, along with Kiffen, Muschamp at Texas and maybe Randy Edsall once the dominos start to fall.

Lastly, I don’t see TOB going anywhere. Though AD’s should really like him, for the fans his age and our record should make him a hard sell for a bit longer.

Though I’d love for Butch to set sail, I doubt he will. Chapel hill and the triangle is just a better place to live and raise a family than Knoxville or Auburn. Also no garbage on the lawn or death threats if you happen to go 7-5 and go to a minor a bowl, and they will give a losing season here or there without firing if you were in the conference championship game the year before.

Cutcliffe left UT in part becaue they refused to raise him to associate head coach and give him a raise. Also he was as close to Fulmer, as he was to UT. He might pull a Grobe and stick it out in Durham a few years. He might go to Auburn for the stick it to the ol’ boss agenda, though. A young coach who is proving his mettle that would be a good fit at UT is Turner Gill, though it would be a hard sell to their fanbase. I think Tuberville leaves for Clemson at the end of the year, and UT makes a push for Muschamp.

TOB doesn’t seem to have the ego to “need” to go to a big name school for the prestige or bucks. He was an assistant for a long time. IMO the only reason he left BC was the asshole AD. Now some or most would say we have an asshole AD, but assholes aren’t all alike. Our asshole has a way of protecting his coaches, staying out of their way and in general covering their asses. Nothing here that I see to make TOB want to pack up and leave. As long as LF picks up the lunch and golf tabs, we should be OK.

If TOB fulfills on what we thought he could do when he was hired, we should not have to worry about some ambitious school swooping in and taking him with them. Remember, TOB WANTED to come here, we didn’t go get him. As has been said a few times, our AD had nothing to do with seeking him out, enticing him to come or in anyway causing him to be here.

  8. ChiefJoJo 11/03/2008 at 12:50 PM #

I agree that Cutcliffe isn’t a prime candidate (too close to Fulmer), and I don’t know why Butch Davis would leave UNC where he’s worshipped and has a fairly easy path to the championship… instead of having to run the gauntlet of UF, UGA, SC, Bama, SEC title game. I suppose UT would pay him more than UNC, but if it were me, I wouldn’t take it. Tennessee is a fine program, but not as good as Texas IMO.

Here’s an interesting question. Which is the more attractive job, Clemson or Tennessee? The Vols have more tradition, certainly, but Clemson could be a monster with the right person, and again the ACC is a much easier conference to navigate.

  9. ruffles31 11/03/2008 at 12:59 PM #

As a State grad who grew up a big Vol fan (and still am), I would be shocked if I see them go after Cutcliffe. Too close to Fulmer. I do think they will go after Chief Bruce Davis. Now, I don’t particularly want to see him go to Knoxville but who knows.

The interesting name I have heard is Jon Gruden.

  10. choppack1 11/03/2008 at 1:08 PM #

Grey – if we have a great year next year – TOB’s name will be mentioned – that’s all there is to it.

A coach’s life is funny – they are always just one or two seasons away from being genius or a dunce.

Several years ago, MOC’s name was mentioned as an up and comer…I’m sure that if Penn State’s or FSU’s job came open in 2003, you’d have heard Amato’s name tossed around.

As far as Tubberville – I just don’t know. If you want to talk about a school that seems to have a short fuse – it’s Auburn. I don’t know how I’d feel about getting a coach that someone else fired.

  11. Alpha Wolf 11/03/2008 at 1:10 PM #

ruffles, I have heard Gruden as well, but I have also heard some Vol fans say that “we ain’t been worth a durn with the ball since Fulmer got rid of Cutcliffe.” (actual quote.)

I tend to agree with y’all about him being too close to Fulmer, but at the same time, if he was a favored assistant, there may be enough good feeling for him that he becomes their second choice if they strike out on the big boys like Gruden.

Problem with Gruden and Tenn is that Tampa Bay is having a playoff-caliber year and might even win their division. Their game in Charlotte against the Panthers looms large, but in either case the Bucs are all but a lock for a wildcard if they keep up their good play. There’s paying NFL money and then there’s competing with NFL teams for a coach…and let’s face it, not even Tenn might be able to compete with that from a financial standpoint.

  12. ruffles31 11/03/2008 at 1:31 PM #

Gruden’s wife was a UT cheerleader and they reportedly are building a house in Knoxville. Sounds like Roy in 2003.

I agree with the pay questions but am just throwing it out there.

  13. Scooter 11/03/2008 at 1:50 PM #

I never thought I’d say this, but I agree with Grey’s thoughts on Tom O’Brien. If we are all correct in assuming that 2010 could be the break-out year for us here, his age might begin to count him out of any of the major coaching searches. And that is just fine with me. I like the way he coaches, I like the way our players behave on and off the field with him in charge, and I like the personality of our program with him running the show. I’d love to see him ride off into the sunset at NC State in about 10 years or so and after winning some major bowl games

UT fans are tired of the lack of offense and want someone to put up some numbers. Chavious’ defenses have been fairly consistent, but UF, UGa and USC have just passed Fulmer’s plodding offenses in the past 5 years like a Porsche passing a Yugo. I think Texas Tech’s season may elevate Mike Leach to UT’s radar screen.

  15. wolfpackdawg 11/03/2008 at 2:20 PM #

I would be shocked, even though it’s Allbarn, if they got rid of Wingnut after one bad season…He has owned Bama and that carries much weight there.

  16. choppack1 11/03/2008 at 2:21 PM #

Kudos to UT for seeing the writing on the wall here. What they are going through right now indicates the need for a change. What’s probably more worrisome is that it doesn’t look like UT is just young and inexperienced.

  17. EverettBeez 11/03/2008 at 3:29 PM #

Leach is loved in Lubbock, and has been there . . . 10 years at least – he was there when I taught there in 99-01. When he lost to North Texas the first home game of the 99 season. My wife wanted me to get a refund for our season tickets. Lubbock is like living on an island – everyone trapped out there on the flat lands. They are darn loyal it him, and I believe he is to them. I don’t think you could get him out of there. He’ll get offered jobs, my bet is he stays.

Good points being made about Cutcliffe.

Doesn’t Davis’ ego want him to play in the premier league in the country? Does the overall weakness of the ACC make it that much harder to pay for the national championship, where the SEC has what seems to be a paved expressway to the game? For UNC to play, it would take an them being the only undefeated team – wouldn’t it?

Auburn, Auburn, Auburn – the most dysfunctional village on the plains. Going by his record, “PineBox” doesn’t deserve to loose his job. But if you go with trends, it sure is falling apart around his ears. I truly hope he stays around and I get to enjoy another year of back-biting & fretting among the little tiger faithful.

  18. choppack1 11/03/2008 at 3:39 PM #

“I truly hope he stays around and I get to enjoy another year of back-biting & fretting among the little tiger faithful.”

How many times has this been said about us (replace “tiger” with “wolfpack”?

Don’t forget that there is an extremely strong possibility that the Penn State job will be open after this year as well. The Rutgers coach was long rumored to be penciled in for that job. And they’ve got a number of good assistants that will be candidates. But that’s another marquee job that will be open.

I have no idea if they have the money to do it, but if I were Washington, I’d make a very strong offer to Davis…provided he hasn’t allowed himself to be sucked in by the SEC jobs.

There’s a lot of good football played on the West Coast. The Pac-10 is better than the ACC and Big 10, but nowhere near as brutal as the Big-12 or SEC. You can win a national title at Washington.

Their new AD, Scott Woodward, came from LSU…so he knows football. And he’s looking to make a big splash. Washington wants to make a big push to upgrade its facilities.

  20. EverettBeez 11/03/2008 at 4:04 PM #

choppack, I don’t know that we’ve ever been as dysfunctional as Auburn is right now. I know, that’s a gutsy thing to say, but its on the table now. And for Auburn, its just football. Their basketball is awful and could remain awful for years. Lebo can’t seem to get anything going – well, other then a new arena they just broke ground for.

Noah – excellent points about the Pac-10. Its not terribly competitive, but you always get the national exposure because of the need for late night games, east coast folks wanting to prove they don’t have east coast bias, ect. Also – no conference championship game at the end of the year to trip you up.

I think you could play in the Mythical National Championship game with one loss from the Pac-10 easier then from the ACC.

I wonder if it’s possible for the Cowboys to look towards the chief once they wake up and realize they have Wade freaking Phillips as their head coach. The way they are circling the drain I can’t imagine Jones sticking with Phillips and I believe Davis was an assistant (maybe D-coordinator?) there under Johnson. He and Jones are both Arkansas alums.

I guess that Jason Garrett would still be their #1 choice but he’s there directing the O right now and it doesn’t seem to be going all that well. If they are still a mess once Romo comes back then they could be in for wholesale changes.

  22. Alpha Wolf 11/03/2008 at 4:14 PM #

“Going by his record, “PineBox” doesn’t deserve to loose his job. But if you go with trends, it sure is falling apart around his ears.”

Nick Saban has got even Paul Finebaum eating out of his hands down there in Alabama, and like I said, take a look at recruiting. If you’re a recruit that wants big-time football love and devotion, a nice college town full of plenty of willing hotties, tradition that only maybe Notre Dame and Michigan can match, and alumni that remember you after graduation, then Tuscaloosa is where you go in that region. In short, the Tide’s coming in and its washing over The Plains down there, especially where the in-state blue chippers are concerned.

I know a lot of Crimson Tide fans (actually family members with degrees from UA) that are rubbing their hands together waiting for the next installment in the 24x7x365 Rivalry.

And Auburn fans know that they need to do something big soon if they are going to possibly hope to compete.

Think Duke/Carolina on steroids with howling crackheads in the stands and you start to get the picture.

BTW, if Alabama wants Stephen Rivers, they’ll get him. Mark it down.

I wonder if it’s possible for the Cowboys to look towards the chief once they wake up and realize they have Wade freaking Phillips as their head coach.

Bet you money the Cowboys make a run on Bill Cowher first.

  23. choppack1 11/03/2008 at 4:30 PM #

I think Butch and the NFL have parted ways for good.

  24. Par Shooter 11/03/2008 at 5:03 PM #

Hmm, Cowher in Dallas would be interesting. It would only make sense that they would go after Cowher first if they looked past Garrett based on his and chief’s relative success in the NFL. But I wouldn’t be so sure that chief wouldn’t bolt for the NFL if offered. His ego tells him that it wasn’t his fault and to be fair the Browns have sucked before, during and after his time there. If he has some more college success and something were offered he’d jump. Too much $$ and a chance to prove he can do it – right now history shows he can’t and that has to eat him up.

  25. EverettBeez 11/03/2008 at 5:48 PM #

Just listened to Fullmer sniffle and fight back tears during his news conference. Finebaum the proceeded to blast him – Fullmer threw Johnny Majors overboard 13 years ago, now he gets his, undecided about taking a job with the University (on the table apparently) or going to work with a detective firm since he did such a good job investing Bama, ect.

Auburn – as much as I’d love to see the disaster go on, I did forget two quotes that the papers & radio here are pointing too. “A month from today our season will be over,” “Coaches go and come.” and a last one “We can’t worry about a bowl.” Folks here are reading this as PineBox has given up.

AlphaWolf is exactly right that Saban is beating the pants off PineBox in recruiting. I will qualify that by pointing out that top recruits often don’t pan out. Unfortunately, I don’t think that will hold Saban back. But it’d be soooo sweet for Auburn to win the Iron Bowl though.

I think he is wrong about the Iron Bowl. Bama fans’ top rival is UT. Iron Bowl is close, but not #1. UT dates way way back. Auburn isn’t even in their fight song! Surprising, GTech is!
