Another by the numbers, UNC-CH

VAWolf has already nailed a fantastic entry on the numbers related to Saturday’s game. But, WRAL had a nice little video of interest that we are linking here.

Wow. Did we even make any of the numbers past about 10?

Seems like the entire back-half of the reel was nothing but Carolina footage. But I guess that’s the conspiracy theorist in me rearing its ugly head.

That is what happens when you lose 11 of the most recent 15 games in the series.

That is what happens when your administration is so disassociated that they let a coach lose seven in a row and still have to struggle with the decision to make a change.

Those late 80’s/early 90’s games were a fun time in this series. I’ll never forget my first UNC-NC State game, was in ’91. Our defense dominated them that day.

That was painful to watch. I had almost blocked those games in Charlotte outta my mind. Never will understand how we can lose to a team that lost to Furman and then the year after that we go down to Austin, Texas and score a huge win yet we can’t even beat a UNC team playing a converted tailback at qb. PATHETIC.

My first State-Carolina game was in 1983. Ethan Horton made it a very long day.

My first win was 1988. 48-3. Watching the blue fade from the stadium after Hartman’s FG at the half was wonderful. Saw the 40-6 game the next year.

1995 was horrible. That was the one time I can remember the State-Carolina game being the last game of the year. We got robbed on the last play of the game and a tie would have kept Carolina out of a bowl. Carolina’s ONLY win that year over a team with a winning record was a lucky win against Louisville…who won seven games and all of them against teams with losing records.

The 1996 game was fun, despite losing. I had sideline passes and stood next between Mike O’Cain and the UNC dance team (praise Jesus for lycra). In fact, Torry Holt broke his collar bone right in front of me. We had absolutely no expectations of winning, so the fact that we managed to score 20 points on them was nice.

1997 was in the rain and my tickets were on the bank.

    Charlotte was a nightmare.

2000 was such a huge relief.

2001 was miserable. That was the game where Devonte Edwards bounced off the goalposts. Late in the game, Rivers had Willie Wright open and overthrew him (one of the few inaccurate passes I ever saw him throw) on fourth down.

2002 was great. I had awesome seats.

2003 was a mess. I dont know what happened to the defense.

2004 and 2005 were both nightmares. We should have won both of those games relatively easy.

2006 was the one State-Carolina game I didn’t even watch. I didn’t see one second of that game.

I was at every game I think from 88-91. 88 and 89 were particularly enjoyable, especially the 89 game at Kenan. It was seriously a laugher.

After leaving for college, the next game i went to was the 2004 game, the most sickening thing i saw. No i take that back, i dragged an old girlfriend and my little sisters/mom to charlotte, even more sickening i think.

The formula for beating NC State is to direct every running play at our #34, and on every passing play, throw in the direction of our #34. Through 10 games, I have yet to see that young man break up a single play. Most of the time, he is getting driven straight out of the picture tube.

Ah, to have an administration that even halfway desired to be somewhat relevant in athletics.

I had typed a long follow up to that sentence, but it all boiled down to the fact that NC State is a good university, so that should tell us that there are folks up there who do know what they’re doing. That they do their jobs, and they do them well. While they may not know how to promote themselves, they are actually doing something right anyway. As a matter of fact I think it could be said in general, that most departments at NCSU have good direction and they have found a way to stay focused and competitive in their markets.

That is, all but one. Gosh, I wonder why that is?

Back to just football, #23 Miami is getting smoked. Down 24-3 to GT with 25 seconds left in the first half.

I was there in Charlotte for the ’98 game. One of the few games where I literally got sick to my stomach. Na Brown caught the TD right in front of our section. I got to watch the Heels celebrate another win over us and ruined what was otherwise a pretty decent season. Yay.

2004 & 2005 were a joke. No reason in hell we should have lost either of those. Don’t know what happened to our defense in both of those games. 2005 even more so, as that was the only reason we had a winning record that year. We had them beat and left off the gas in the 3rd quarter.

2006…I don’t even care to talk about it. I was there, and it was the biggest waste of money I’ve ever spent on any ticket to any athletic event. Ever.

A lot of heartache in this series. I hope the losses UNC has suffered have hurt as much as many of ours have. Seems like we’ve really pissed away a lot of great opportunities against these guys. The slant towards the Holes over the past 15 years or so is not indicative of a talent disparity, IMO. They’ve just been real lucky through the years against us. And for some reason, we’ve crapped the bed a lot against them. Several losses that no doubt we should have won.

It would be great to be the spoiler against them for once and absolutely ruin things for them. I think we’re more than due in that department in this series.

Didn’t mention how many times the crooked refs took points of the board when we had just scored the winning touchdown, did they? Didn’t mention that the freakin’ ref was out of position and didn’t even see the play!

My first State-Carolina game was 99 in Charlotte. It was my freshman year. Before going to State I was indifferent towards any team. It only took one game for me to become a fan (vs. SC in the hurricane) largely due to obnoxious fans of the other team. It only took the Charlotte game for my hatred of UNC to begin. I got an in-your-face bragging mass e-mail from a guy from high school sent to all of us who went to NC State. I hadn’t spoken to him a single time since high school and this was the first correspondence I got. I mark that as a milestone in my NC State fanhood. He would not be the last person who, although I once thought he was normal, turned into a huge jerk when it came time to playing UNC. Let me rephrase that, when UNC won. If they lost, I heard nothing. Interestingly, he was one of the few who actually went there :).

PIR – I don’t know whether your friend is truly a jerk or whether they don’t understand our pain.

I really hope – that a wolfpack fan knowing the pain of some losses, wouldn’t play that game.

My sister did the same thing to me after our loss to them in basketball in 2006(?) @ Chapel Hill. That was the game where we fought back and finally tied it, and then collapsed. My sister thought it would be fun to call me and rag me. And in a good natured rivalry – where things relatively break even, that’s fine. However, in this case, it would have been like a Yankees fan taunting a Red Sox fan before 2004.

The average fair weather Tar Heel fan has no idea how much these losses hurt us. I’ve got friends w/ whom I engage in the back and forth thing – and that’s fine. But when someone calls you out of the blue after their squad beats yours – and it’s the 3rd or 4th straight time – is there any reason to rub it in?

You talk about who these games mean more to – and for now, it’s definitely the State fan.

One thing about the 2006 loss – I was disgusted about our performance and direction of the program. Instead of going to the game, I went to Nags Head w/ a group of friends – some of whom were even UNC fans – had a blast that weekend in spite of the game. I remember watching that game w/ a strange sense of detachment. Kind of like, if the team’s not going to try any harder, I’m not going to get too angry about losing to them.
