…And Then You Win By A Little…

Bobby Bowden first remarked that programs that are improving first lose by a little, then they win by a little.

We remarked after the near-win against Boston College that the Wolfpack was close — that they lost by a little against the Eagles, 38-31, in a game where the NC State defense could not make that final stand and allowed BC to sneak away with a hard-fought win against a never-say-die NC State team that was undermanned and often outplayed yet had the game tied until less than a minute was left to play.  #25 Wake Forest was not so lucky in a rainy and windswept Carter-Finley Stadium this afternoon as the Wolfpack held on for a 21-17 win that served notice to their two remaining opponents that they can’t count on an easy win against a 4-6 team.  State held on, and won by a little today.

This leaves NC State still alive in the mythical state championship of North Carolina, with victories over ECU, Duke and Wake Forest.  The hated Tar Heels remain, and State needs the win to keep their slim bowl hopes alive.

The last part of what Bobby Bowden said?  “…Then you win by a lot.”  If that were to happen as soon as next Saturday, there will be a lot of extremely happy Wolfpack fans late next Saturday afternoon.  The Heels are a solid team, however, and right now, if it were given, I think it safe to say that any of us would take a nailbiting Wolfpack win.   Big wins might come later, but one thing is sure, and Carolina had better be wary of this: NC State may not have an accomplished 2008 resume, but this team never says die and UNC is in for a fight from start to finish next weekend.

We’ll have much more to say about this win and the upcoming game against the hated Tar Heels later, but right now, we’re going to celebrate and let you add your comments.

    From the GoPack article:

“Wilson hit wide-open tight end George Bryan for an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Wolfpack a 7-0 advantage. It’s the fourth consecutive week that the Wolfpack has scored on its first possession of the game.”

Man, if anyone wondered whether or not our coaching staff was heading in the right direction, this one statement sets me at ease. That first series is almost always your fully scripted, game-plan-for-the-night kind of series. And imho really shows how well this coaching staff can accurately break down an opponent, and then how well they were able to effectively convey their game plan to the team during the walk-throughs.

Nice win, loved the offense (in the first half especially), way to hold on at the end D – go Pack!

Hard fought win today vs. the Deacs. They have been getting that win lately in close games, but this State team found a way. Great day!

Thoughts on watching the WRAL player interviews:

-The team’s goal is to “keep on pushing” and take it one day at a time
-These guys seem to all think the world of TOB and his coaching
-Russell Wilson is freakish: he’s a mega-athlete, articulate, and unbelievably modest. Model student athlete
-The offense and defense are “feeding off each other” – great atmosphere for a football team
-If TOB can get guys that know how to play and have a good head on their shoulders, we are going to be GOOD

  6. Daily Update 11/16/2008 at 7:21 AM #

Earlier in the year before RW’s emergence as one of the best QBs in the ACC, I thought we might be in for 4-5 year rebuilding job. You have to give TOB and Bible a lot of credit. After some really miserable years of NC State football, TOB has made it fun again. Consistent effort, sound strategies, smart play, and minimal mistakes. This is exactly why TOB was hired and exactly why I said he was the perfect fit for our job as his strengths matched our weaknesses.

Still a long ways to go and recruiting isn’t going to be easy with BD in Chapel Hill, but there are definitely reasons to believe that we could be in the hunt in the Atlantic division as soon as next year.

Daily Update, I could have said it better myself. That’s exactly what I had in mind after the game.

  8. Daily Update 11/16/2008 at 7:45 AM #

Alpha Wolf: We are only 4-6, but the season feels much better than the actual record. It is great to have nice seasons every now and then, but our program had reached a point where it needed a complete overhaul and a new foundation. It’s a shame that last year and most likely this year we won’t be bowling, but the important thing is that TOB has already made this his program. His way of doing things works and it is obvious the players believe in him. This doesn’t mean we are destined for championships, but there are now obvious reasons to feel very good about near future of NC State football.

Wish we could have the 1st half of the season over again…

  9. choppack1 11/16/2008 at 8:31 AM #

Oh yeah – unsung play of the game…Bradley Pierson’s great catch of a high snap late in the 4th quarter.

As far as contention for our division title – the leader of our conference is UMd at what 4-2 or 4-3? Heck, w/ a few breaks we could have won our division THIS year.

  10. wolfonthehill 11/16/2008 at 8:32 AM #

^ Completely agree. This will make two straight seasons where, for very different reasons, we lay an absolute egg through the first half, then rally and look like a good team for the last half. Hopefully the injury bug will bite elsewhere next year, and we’ll be able to just play a full season of football.

Because right now, if we got to play USC, USF, UMd, BC, and Clemson again, we don’t lose more than 2 or 3 of those. If we’re simply healthy (and by that I mean if we had a non-absurd number of injuries to exactly the wrong players you can’t lose), we wouldn’t have lost to more than 3 of them when we DID play.

This team honestly deserves better than 4-6, but I’ll take it at this point & hope it makes them hungrier next season.

PS – Nate, please come back for one healthy season to dominate this league. PLEASE???

  11. Daily Update 11/16/2008 at 8:58 AM #

Choppack: And the breaks we needed weren’t total reaches either. As wolfonthehill points out, we had so many injuries to key players before the seasons started and then we had even more after the season started.

RW’s most likely go to guys were Donald Bowens and Anthony Hill to start the season. Both are big time players at this level and were all-ACC talents. So RW had to develop this year without his two primary targets and work with receivers and TEs who basically had zero experience at this level.

    Next week’s game is big…

  12. RabidWolf 11/16/2008 at 9:11 AM #

“Let’s give a little credit to the D today, too … Not great, but decent and – FINALLY a last minute stand … This time for a victory over WFU!!!”

Actually…..TWO game saving defensive stands….and Bradley Pierson pulling down a high snap and getting the punt off….I thought that one was gonna get away. Overall a great game by the ‘Pack on both sides of the ball.

    Carowhina…take notice….you’re next!

  13. robopack 11/16/2008 at 9:27 AM #

-“PS – Nate, please come back for one healthy season to dominate this league. PLEASE???”

My word how true!??? Domination would most likely describe him next season. Can you say All ACC, All American. Contend for an ACC championship. Sounds fun to me.

  14. packalum44 11/16/2008 at 9:50 AM #

Could not be a happier man today! Good game! Thank you Nate Irving! Without him we lose and with him healthy all season we would have won a few more games. Our guys’ hard work has paid off.

One thing many fans on here have mentioned all season and I saw last night…Mike Archer frustrates me with his zone defense. Every freaking play???? Just as other teams have done, Wake moved the ball at will b/c our defense is as predictable as Michael Jackson at a day care. They destroyed the holes in our zone constantly. Although my memory was fuzzed by Heinekens, I don’t remember us playing any man defense. I hope this changes. We don’t have the best corners in the world but we don’t have the worst….

Two more wins is not out of the question. We have a tough game next week but lucky for us….the Tar Heels are pussies!!! Go Pack!

  15. SEAT.5.F.2 11/16/2008 at 10:55 AM #

    44^

We blitz alot, too much IMO. Only Nate Irving could possibly get to QB and the problem is that only he can make plays in coverage. Blitzing any others is the equal to knowing you can’t gain any positive yards rushing but doing it anyway to “keep ’em honest”.

Skinner is a great QB and the biggest plays he made at the end of the first half were with his feet when we blitzed. Other then that they threw an end around TD pass and got a FG after recovering a fumble inside our 25. Your still frustrated… really.

    Just a little thread-jack here.

If you get a chance, take a look at the ACC standings, both divisions are completely up in the air.

In the Atlantic, things are completely messy. Maryland is up in the loss column @ 4-2 with FSU and Wake at 4-3 and BC at 3-3. However, from a control standpoint, it’s mess b/c all of these teams are playing each other over the next 2 weeks (FSU@MD, BC@Wake next week, MD@BC 2wks out). Both games next week are elimination games but everyone is in it.
-If FSU & Wake win, Wake is the champ.
-If MD & Wake win, MD is the champ.
-If MD & BC win, the champ is the MD@BC winner in 2wks.
-If FSU & BC win, BC is champ if they beat MD, otherwise it’s FSU.
    Twisted but understandable.

In the Coastal, everyone but Duke is still in it. You’ve got Miami at 4-2, GT @ 4-3 and UNC/VT/UVA at 3-3. The Canes control their own destiny here but they must win @GT on Thursday or they are out by tie break against GT (or at least into lower tie-break scenarios). If they beat GT but lose to State, it gets weird. UNC can catch Miami by beating State and Duke. However, VT or UVA can get into the mix by winning out (mutually exclusive b/c they still have to play each other). It is theoretically possible to end up with 4 teams tied at 5 wins in the coastal; Miami, GT, UNC and either VT or UVA. Makes the Atlantic look reasonable.

Ironically, State has no role to play in the Atlantic but is a pivotal player in the Coastal. Beating UNC guarantees that they are out b/c either GT or Miami will finish with 5 wins. Meanwhile, regardless of the State-UNC outcome, State-Miami is likely to shake the tree, either to put Miami over the top to 6 wins or to create a 3rd or 4th tie breaker scenario amongst 5-time winners in the Coastal.

McLovin, I haven’t seen/heard those interviews. Do you have a link?

I heard Russell Wilson yesterday, also a very impressive young man.

Did anyone notice the different offensive package we started the game with? We were under center most of the time and used more I formation. Which in my mind shows that Dana Bible’s offense has a lot of options built in and that whenever Mike Glennon’s time comes, the offense has the style to utilize his abilities.

  19. inhoc... 11/16/2008 at 11:26 AM #

the way i see the confrence standings right now, it looks as if everyone could finish 4-4….getting confusing.

  20. Primewolf 11/16/2008 at 12:09 PM #

mike will have a tough time taking control from an All ACC QB. But I think he will see some playing time. He will have to be MR perfect to win the job

I got my usual Sunday morning red-ass reading the Nuisance and Disturber sports pages… So I wrote that great football expert, Robbi Pickeral.

“Thank you for the enjoyable articles about the Tar Heels in this morning’s Nuisance and Disturber. I read every word and studied the pictures carefully. Chief Davis, walking off the field with his head down, was my favorite. Perhaps I should offer my condolences to you and the other staff members of a newspaper that could pass for “The Daily Tar Heel.”

What initiated my writing was the wording of the script under the heading, “Getting Turf Time.” You write, “For the second time this season, an opponent’s student section rushed the field.” ANY student section that rushes a field is some opponent’s student section. Should the reader assume that the referenced ‘student section of an opponent’ be an opponent of the writer’s team or, perhaps, the N&O’s team? Do we have some sort of Fruedian slip here? Is evidence available of such ownership of the Tar Heels? Let’s look.

For the second consecutive week, a picture of the Tar Heels dominates the front page of the Sports page. This is not a victorious Tar Heel team but one that just choked and almost certainly blew it’s opportunity at a ACC title game appearance. The defeat of a nationally ranked team by the team located in the paper’s city, the Wolfpack, is relegated to secondary status. It’s not just the picture and the type size of the headline but the wording that send the message that the Tar Heels are the Nuisance and Disturber’s team — UNC’S ACC TITLE GAME DREAMS FADING AFTER TOUGH ROAD LOSS. The tone is one of respect for the Tar Heels while the tone of the headline over the obligatory small picture of a Wolfpack player escaping a tackle by it’s opponent, sends the message that whatever is happening is of lesser value than the headlined picture.

Or is it the rule of news? Is it the paper’s view that a Tar Heel player being sacked is news, while a Wolfpack player not getting sacked is just as newsworthy.

In other articles in the Nuisance and Disturber on perhaps different days, much is made of the fact that the Tar Heels are dominating the in-state recruiting battles. And why not? According to the way the Tar Heels are presented in the Nuisance and Disturber, they are the preferred school. The N&O carried a cartoon of the the McCain/Obama political race with the media hoisting Obama on it’s shoulders while McCain was running on his own. The race for upper tier recruits could carry the same cartoon with UNC being carried by the Nuisance and Disturber while NCSU must run on its own.

For your information, Ms. Pickeral, (I only assume you to be a Ms. because of the spelling of your first name, Robbi) as the Tar Heels dreams are fading, the Wolfpack’s dreams are rising — which fits the definition of news far more than the usual “fading dreams” of Tar Heel football.”

I miss the days when we had a choice of newspapers in Raleigh. Well, until the N&O bought out the old Raleigh Times. The only really bad thing about living in Raleigh is having a newpaper whose reporters are sucking the dicks of the Tar Holes. Even Tudor’s headline is bullshit. As has been said by many in this thread and on this blog, there is nothing “sudden” about the direction our football program is heading. It doesn’t make it any better that the headline writer is not the reporter. Headline writers have as much influence on the news as the reporters. A decade or so ago the religion department students at UNX boycotted classes. This was reported under the headline, “Mass boycott classes in support of…” A few hundred students is not massive boycotting nor is our football program “suddenly” finding right direction — unless you have your head up your UNX ass. (Strong opinion to follow.)

(anybody know why Nuisance and Disturber abbreviation comes out N&ampO?)

  22. haze 11/16/2008 at 12:57 PM #

^ I hate to think what the “Strong Opinion” part said. 🙂

  23. Ismael 11/16/2008 at 3:18 PM #

    Greywolf – nice writeup.

the &amp is what’s called a character-entity reference. There are 5 characters that are reserved for HTML, the ampersand, the single-quote (apostrophe), the double-quote, the less-than sign and the greater-than sign.

So if you put the ampersand, sometimes pages escape it incorrectly. Escaping means to convert the ampersand sign into its character entity reference.

so ampersand becomes &amp behind the scenes.
    the apostrophe characer becomes &apos.

You may be wondering: if ampersand -> &amp isn’t the ampersand in “&amp” illegal? No, because the engines that render it, no to look specifically for an ampersand, followed by some words/numbers, then followed be a semicolon (;).

The return of Nate Irving, Alan-Michael Cash and Clem Johnson cannot and will not be overstated.

The games that we lost were not because we got shutout defensively, its because we couldn’t stop anyone.

We were giving up an ACC worst 24+ points/game, and in the last two, duke got a garbage TD to score 17, and wake scored 17 (3 in the second half).

Did anyone see the pass that Clem Johnson tipped (like a volleyball set) to Jeremy Gray. The pass was to the sidelines and Johnson, jumped, headed out of bounds and tipped it back to Gray who was in bounds.

Tackling was much better yesterday and Clem Johnson is a great tackler. Robbie Leonard also tackled well. I was happy for Audi Augustin getting the sack late on the last drive. He was so pumped and happy, jumping around, one of the regulars was trying to calm him down.

BJD95 is sage-like. He predicted the TE’s would be huge and they had 2 of the 3 TD’s.

  25. Noah 11/16/2008 at 4:05 PM #

I saw a lot of people complaining about Dana Bible last year. Amazing what getting some players will do for a coach, huh?

I would bet that as our defensive depth and health improves, you’ll see an inversely proportional number of complaints about Archer. The defense we run is designed to take away the big plays and make teams sustain a drive. It maximizes the number of opportunities for the offense to make a mistake. We gave up one big play yesterday on a trick play…and Wake only had one sustained drive. I’d say it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Wake’s FG came after the Wilson fumble in the redzone, didn’t it?
