A Season to Remember

Russell Wilson

NC State closed out the 2008 regular season with a convincing 38-28 win over Miami. The team that (for September and most of October) looked as if it could be one of the all-time worst Wolfpack squads turned out to be one of the most memorable. Clemson’s thumping of South Carolina means that 10 ACC teams will be eligible for 9 bowl slots. That said, it’s unfathomable that no bowl would want this NC State team.    We’ve already read that the EaglesBank bowl in DC is considering the Pack, and they had to leave Carter-Finley Stadium impressed with the Wolfpack team that they saw.

Consider the following:

  • NC State became the first team in ACC history to start 0-4 in conference play, and finish at .500. The 4 game ACC winning streak is the Pack’s longest since 1992.
  • Russell Wilson’s freshman season stats: 16 TDs passing, 4 TDs rushing, 1 INT. If justice is done, he is your ACC offensive POY. It would be a travesty if Wilson is not 1st team all-ACC. If he doesn’t win conference ROY, there should be a Congressional investigation. I am now ready to say, without reservations, that Russell Wilson is a better college QB than Philip Rivers. He is an absolute sensation. I’d take him over Tim Tebow right now. If we can hold back the MLB scouts, we are absolutely looking at a future Heisman candidate.
  • In its last four games, NC State has won three blowout/convincing victories (the Duke and Miami games looked closer in the box score due to a late garbage time TD, cutting the final margin to 10.
  • IIRC, NC State still has 5 current or former walk-ons in the two-deep, including today’s starter at safety (for the injured Clem Johnson). How many BCS conference teams (even of the 2-10 or worse variety) can say that?
  • Nate Irving is an absolute beast. He has transformed an awful defense into a espectable one. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a single player mean so much to a defensive unit. You could say he’s the defense’s Russell Wilson. If not for the injury time, he would be your ACC defensive POY.  Look for Nate to play in the NFL.
  • Tom O’Brien gets my vote for ACC Coach of the Year. I would have been impressed if he had just managed to keep the Wolfpack playing hard all year, and he got us bowl eligible against a very difficult schedule. He is the right man at the right time for NC State.
  • NC State will finish no more than one game behind the participants in the ACC title game. Don’t be surprised if the Pack is playing in the first week of December next year, or in 2010.

Add it all up, and this is a team that any bowl would be lucky to have. For all the tweaking we give him, ACC Commish Swofford actually does a good job making sure our eligible teams get bowl slots, especially the ones that hold up their end of the bargain and sell tickets. I am strangely confident that he will help find a very nice game for NC State.

It doesn’t highstick. We’ve had the minimum # of wins 3 times – twice we didn’t get a bid.

    Discussion of post-season accolades …

    1) As I said earlier today in another thread, I believe Paul Johnson wins the COY because a) its his first year at Ga Tech, b) he finished above .500 in conference, and c) he has huge road win against Georgia (1st win in 8 years for Ga Tech). I want the award to go to O’Brien but I think Johnson will get it. Johnson hasn’t had nearly the OOC schedule that O’Brien had nor the injury issues of key players which have already been enumerated.

    2) Wilson deserves BOTH Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. POY gets tough because of the following choices (albeit not as deserving): 1) Jonathan Dwyer–Leads conference in rushing (1st time since I believe Tashard Choice in 2006) and their team has had a good season in Johnson’s 1st year; and 2) Hakeem Nicks–set several career records at UNC, leads league in TD catches and yds per game and is very high on the HYPE scale. Again, I want to reiterate that I believe since Wilson leads the Conference in TOTAL OFFENSE, he should trump as a Freshman, he should get the award; however, I’m not very optimistic when it comes to the deserving getting awards.

    3) Wilson has no competition for ROY. I really like Brandon Pendergrass from Wake Forest but Wilson had much more impact for his team this season. There is little more to discuss in this category.

    4) Irving’s injury will keep him from earning the DPOY. If he had played a full season, I agree that there’s no question his impact would have earned him that award. Consideration is nice, but defensive players are judged on their entire seasons that’s why someone like Aaron Currie or Alphonso Smith will probably get the award. I would actually like to see the league’s top tackler Duke’s Michael Tauiliili receive the award.

Conclusion: The ACC has a very bad historical record of promoting average players and rewarding mediocrity in its award recipients. Just think about Matt Schaub and Ed Nelson as recipients in two other sports over deserving NC State players and you’ll soon be reminded of how ridiculous this conference’s record on rewarding great players has been. With that in mind, O’Brien comes up in 2nd place for COY, Wilson misses out on POY and earns in a landslide ROY.

I wasn’t surprised one bit at the result of our game today & a very fine finish to the season. I’m not sure I’d put this into a ‘season to remember’ though… if we finished 9-3 or ACC champs then yeah. State champs is great for bragging rights and considering how we began the season, but it’s only worth so much historically.

Please, let’s hold off on the Wilson is a better college QB than Rivers conversation, shall we? Russell is awesome and has done it for 2/3 season. Let’s give him 4 years, and then we’ll talk.

’75, unless you are counting the NFL Senior Bowl, Rivers was in 4 bowls and won 3, with 3 MVPs. I was at the Tangerine Bowl vs. Pitt where we got beat pretty solidly.

I’ve said this before, but I am really pleased with the makeup of this team. It’s very clear to me that we have a great coaching staff, and that cannot be understated (especially, TOB, Bible and Horton). We should also realize that without some strong leadership among a few key guys like Ant Hill, Andre, and some others, it would not have been possible to turn the season around.

I’m so happy for the seniors & very proud to be a Wolfpacker today. 🙂

Sacco – solid points and good food for thought, as always.

“There seems to be some interest by Boise to pair Boise State with Ball State and release the ACC to Mobile, btw.”

I live in Mobile and if this has any references to this I would love to see them as not having to travel to watch NC State play in tiny ladd Peebles stadium would be awesome.
Ladd-Peebles is an old stadium and while Mobile is a great draw for many reasons, I hope that we get a more prestigous bowl.
I will certainly see what I can find about that rumor down here as I believe I know all 6-7 alumni that live in this area! 🙂

  6. Alpha Wolf 11/29/2008 at 9:45 PM #

Coppertop – how far is Mobile from Gulf Shores?

  7. choppack1 11/29/2008 at 9:45 PM #

As much I hate to say it, Coach Jags deserves COY votes – if not the award. I don’t think anyone thought BC would be in their second straight championship, but darned if they aren’t there. They also had to win 3 straight “playoff” games to get there. (It may be Spaziani and Logan who deserve these awards, but still…)

  8. colapack 11/29/2008 at 9:45 PM #

Id really like to have the BC and Maryland game as wins now. Actually just one of the two would be great. That would really have shaken up the division and we might then be looking at #2 in the atlantic. I cant forget the image of Ichabod Crane rumbling in to score the winning TD against us. We needed Irving in that game!

  9. SaccoV 11/29/2008 at 9:46 PM #

Thanks so kindly, AW. As for the season at large, couldn’t be prouder of the team. I hate playing the “What-if” game but because of injury, it’s very easy. Regardless of the end of this season, now next season seems very bright, and I hope to take my 1-year-old (which will be his age next year) to Raleigh for his first game on the way to another very memorable 2009 season. I know he’s already as excited as I am.

  10. SaccoV 11/29/2008 at 10:04 PM #

Choppack1, I would normally agree with you on Jags, but they played in the championship game last year in his 1st year. He certainly deserved it last year. This year, with a huge win over a major conference rival in Georgia, PJ will get the award. Last year it went to Al Groh, which means the award is about as meaningful as those pre-season All-America selections for Brandon Spoon (nominated 4 consecutive years and never made All-America ONCE in post-season). Either way, TOB is the best coach we have and he’s the best coach we could have all things considered. There is so much to be excited about that I really could care less what our conference rewards O’Brien with. I want to congratulate him on a very good season and I am confident that he will earn his share of awards before all is said and done.

  11. highstick 11/29/2008 at 10:05 PM #

Who gets bumped in the ACC if we get the #9 bowl slot? As much as I hope I’m wrong, I’m not going to get too optimistic. Now if we had an Athletic Department that I could be convinced that could market us, it might be different. BUT, we know that’s not the case.

  12. choppack1 11/29/2008 at 10:12 PM #

sacco – agree 100% on the value of the award.

I’m not liking what I’m seeing on the bowl situation. At this point, I’ll be happy if we go anywhere.

  13. gopack1975 11/29/2008 at 10:16 PM #

JoJo, I was counting his senior bowl…how else could he have played in 5 bowls? I was at the Gator Bowl and we beat Notre Dame pretty handily. PR only lost one bowl game. 4 for 5 is not too bad. How many other players can say they went 4 for 5?
I will miss our seniors…I really enjoyed watching Brown for 4 years. I beleive he can make it at the next level. Same goes for Ant Hill.

  14. SaccoV 11/29/2008 at 10:17 PM #

Maybe some team will have another fight and forgo their bowl appearance and make some space. I agree with the others, this isn’t looking as promising as we hoped. If we don’t earn a bowl bid, that’s ok too. We definitely had the best end of the season of any team in the conference. Trust me, if a bowl has us and UNC to choose, I don’t believe there is any contest whatsoever.

  15. coppertop 11/29/2008 at 10:30 PM #

    Alpha,

Gulf Shores, AL is at most 30 minutes from downtown Mobile and the stadium where the game will be played.

  16. Alpha Wolf 11/29/2008 at 10:34 PM #

coppertop, thx for the info. My Alabama cousins are always talking up Gulf Shores and if we end up down there I might head that way to see for myself what it’s all about.

  17. BJD95 11/29/2008 at 10:40 PM #

We could easily go ahead of Miami, Maryland, or Wake. We are playing better than all three, and travel better. None of those teams are particularly interesting for TV, either.

  18. tvp1 11/29/2008 at 10:58 PM #

BJD: Unfortunately, we CANNOT be picked ahead of those teams by NCAA rule. A 6-6 team cannot get picked for a conference tie-in bowl over a 7-5 team if that would result in the 7-5 team getting pushed out of the conference’s bowls.

Lee Fowler is going to have to earn his damn salary this week finding us a spot somewhere.

  19. choppack1 11/29/2008 at 11:06 PM #

68 teams go to bowls. There are 75 teams eligible/with a shot to be eligible. Unless another bowl game somehow gobbles up another ACC team, we won’t be going to an ACC bowl.

Get this, I think the Sun Bowl entered into contractual agreements w/ some of these bowls to back up the bigger conferences – and that’s what ultimately could screw us (that and the tie ins.)

This isn’t like the NCAA – where a committee gets together and sees who wins and loses based on some kind of merit. Rather, it’s a system of tie -ins and NCAA rules which prohibit and 7-5 team staying home while a 6-6 goes bowling, IF there’s an at large spot.

Right now – I just don’t see it. We need Arizona State to lose, Louisville to lose, Hawaii to lose.

So, what we’re looking at right now is a .500 record in conference play, finishing 1 game out of tying for first – and possibly staying home. I hope it doesn’t happen, but we probably need to prepare ourselves for it.

  20. Mike 11/29/2008 at 11:08 PM #

The other point to remember is there are other conferences that will not be able to fulfill their obligations, and those bowls are then free to choose.

  21. SaccoV 11/29/2008 at 11:09 PM #

BJD, don’t you remember Maryland’s very memorable appearance in the Orange Bowl after they won the conference in 2002. They only lost by 30 to Florida. That’s pretty good, isn’t it? Either way, none of our conference teams have been particularly good representatives in bowl games, ourselves and perhaps Va Tech being the exceptions. We have traveled remarkably well. The worst part is three of the four teams we’ve beaten in the last four games will get bowl appearances, and we have a victory over ECU who will play for a conference championship in their league. Either way, we’ve won enough games to be bowl eligible, which was the goal from the beginning. I would like to see us in a bowl game, but if not, fine. We had the best season we could have given a very difficult start.

  22. Mike 11/29/2008 at 11:12 PM #

Why TOB deserves COY – a team that struggled to a 2-6 start could have (should have) easily packed it in for the year. TOB gave them hope.

Why TOB will not win – Paul Johnson at GT did an outstanding job. GT was picked near the bottom of the league and in a complete rebuild mode.

My prediction – Butch will win it for turning the Heels to a winning record.

Why RW should win Off POY – he helped turn this team around and no other offensive player was as important to his team as RW. And no player really stood out all year on the O side of the ball for anyone.

Why RW will not win – Wears red and Nicks wears aluminum blue.

There is no other sport I know of with a more fucked up postseason than College Football.

  24. LRM 11/29/2008 at 11:27 PM #

Others to keep in mind, with Colorado losing yesterday the Independence Bowl has an opening and I’m not sure with UCLA losing the Pac-10 will have enough, so the Hawaii Bowl may have an opening.

I feel pretty certain we’ll go to D.C. and play Navy (already accepted).

  25. tvp1 11/29/2008 at 11:45 PM #

Just worked it out. Unless one of the following happens, we will not go bowling:
-Hawaii loses out (unlikely, they are already up 14 on Wazzu)
    -Arizona State loses to Arizona
-We negotiate some workaround for this deal where the Sun Belt backs up the SEC.

We are about to get big time screwed by the conference tie-in system and the NCAA’s rules on 6-6 teams.
