Tomorrow, It’s All About Rewarding Faith

Almost 22 months ago, Tom O’Brien was on the verge a possible dream season – Matt Ryan’s (future Top 5 NFL draft pick, and Day One starter for the Atlanta Falcons) senior year, surrounded by a bevy of seasoned upperclassmen. The kind of team that wins league titles. The kind of team that, given a few good breaks, might find itself playing for the national championship.

Tom O’Brien walked away. He left the table for 2007 holding pocket aces, to play out the string with the eight-duece offsuit left by Chuck Amato. All because he believed in NC State.

I will repeat part of my post from December 6, 2006:

According to SFN’s sources, Coach O’Brien sought out the NC State job with the same vigor and tenacity as did Jimbo Fisher. He really wants to be here, and I think it’s safe to assume it’s because he believes he can elevate his success to a whole new level at NC State. He can go from “pretty good” to periodically competing for the ACC title, and regularly make good bowls (as even his current level of performance would land NC State in good bowl games). His floor essentially is identical to the Dick Sheridan level of performance, and few Wolfpackers complain about that era. And that’s not to say we expect that to be his ultimate ceiling – there’s every bit as much reason to hope for upside from TOB as there was with respect to PJ. I don’t think O’Brien would have made this move if he didn’t think he could take it to the next level at NC State. We should be honored and very enthusiastic that such an accomplished, respected coach feels that way about our university.

It’s every bit as true today as it was then. Tom O’Brien has done a great job with the horrible hands he has been dealt since he arrived in Raleigh. He is, without a doubt, the right man for the job. Watching ESPN two weeks ago – Coach O’Brien stood outside the team bus, calm and silent as the players filed out. Nobody chuckled or horsed around. They waited respectfully for their leader to take them into battle. He did so with a slight nod of his head, and a calm “Let’s go.” No yelling, no showboating. Just quiet, confident leadership from a man who has earned his injury-decimated team’s respect.

State had no business winning that game, but win they did. After losing the leaders of both the offense and defense, the already paper-thin Pack couldn’t compete with South Florida. But they kept fighting until the final whistle (otherwise, they would have lost by 70).

Tomorrow, TOB gets his second shot at his former team. There’s no Matt Ryan to bail “Jags” out anymore. Instead of 20,000 bored, arrogant, delusional Eagle fans (who blamed O’Brien for not landing better bowl bids, despite the fact that fan apathy was the very reason for it) – he’ll have a sea of red cheering him on. In the middle of yet another bad season (as the program shakes off the last vestiges of the Amato regime), the stands will nonetheless be packed.

Tom O’Brien really wants this win. NC State really needs this win. Despite the inflated record, these Eagles can be had. Part of the reason O’Brien was attracted to NC State was the incredible support provided by our fans – as he witnessed firsthand in 2006. Tom O’Brien believed in what we could accomplish together. He believed in you. He believed in me. Let’s reward his faith by giving him the best gameday crowd he’s ever seen tomorrow. I’ll see you there.

    You’re welcome.

Wilson’s pocket awareness is impressive. Disappointing not to come away with a TD on that drive though.

Sorry Level64, I’m not disappointed..I’m peeved that Ron Cherry and his incompetent friends took away our touchdown. BC stretches towards endzone, it’s ruled TD. We stretch INTO endzone and it’s a fumble.

Oh well, sure didn’t seem too interested capitalizing on that TO.

    Saaaaaweeeeeeeeeeet!

Does Willie Young need a girlfriend or what? Just what the hell was he doing on the ground there??? Weird.

good thing BC has been careless with the football. otherwise we are down 35-17 at halftime.

please tell me why our WR runs a one yard route on 3rd and 3. and why in the hell Wilson threw it to him.

The only good thing I can say about the first half is that my kids got a hug from Sid at the concession stand.

Well, that could’ve been a lot worse … Good clock-eating drive that kept the ball away from them … disappointed to only come away w/ a field goal – but w/ the way our D has played I guess 21-17 isn’t too bad … Thank goodness for the forced turnovers

Get some pressure on that QB and we stand a good chance of winning the game … Plus, they have to kick off to T.J. Graham to start the 2nd half!!

Pretty impressive first half. The defense really started stepping it up making tackles and putting pressure on their QB. Way to go Pack. Now we need to go for the kill. Make those plays and this game can be ours. Go Wolfpack.

BC only punted once, except for when they killed the clock before halftime. Not getting a TD from inside the 1 and getting squat after the late fumble will end up killing our chances.

Not that we’re anywhere close to where we want to be, but the word of the day is “competent” offensively. This looks like a totally different team today. It’s hard to believe that a mobile/confident QB can really make that much difference.

I’d sure like to see the DL exert some pressure in the second half.

    Wolftown,
what defense were you watching? i didn’t see them stop anything. no pressure on Crane either except for a busted play when no one blocked burgess. our secondary is getting eaten alive. but we are thankfully still in it because of BC carelessness with the football and russell wilson/tj graham.

i just hope BC tries to run the ball in the second half. we can stop that.

3 and out. And so the meltdown begins.

  14. Afterglow 10/04/2008 at 1:08 PM #

    That sucks.

  15. redfred2 10/04/2008 at 1:09 PM #

Oh well, I just mowed on Weds, but maybe the yard could use another trim.

This is the first time all year that I’ve really been pissed about our effort. The score doesn’t reflect it YET, but this is a very sorry performance by NC State.

  17. redfred2 10/04/2008 at 1:11 PM #

DAMNIT YOUNG PENETRATE!!! You had nothing to gain by giving ground AT THE GOAL LINE.

  18. McPete 10/04/2008 at 1:13 PM #

that TD was Maddox’s screw up. he bit hard on the fullback handoff and got out of his assignment. suffice it to say nate irving doesn’t make that mistake.

  19. BJD95 10/04/2008 at 1:18 PM #

I’m betting the final score will be 42-17. Wheels starting to come off.

according to ken tysiac in today’s N&O, the staff is using their low scholly numbers as a recruiting tool, letting players know they have an opportunity to play right away. i just hope we have a punter in attendance so he can see how big a role he’d play.

We are the most overmatched defense I have ever seen for a bcs school. Its like a Mike Ocain era front 4, supplemented with VMI caliber linebackers. We get blown off the ball like nothing I’ve ever seen, and when the running backs get into the second level of the defense, our linebackers take bad angles and can’t wrap up. Just awful.

Our press guide may list guys like Kuhn at 280, and Mckeen at 250, but I doubt either way more than 230 lbs.

Last week during the south Florida games, their tailbacks were bigger and more powerful than anyone along our defensive line.

    “Crane with time…”

    NO SHIT!!!

  23. BJD95 10/04/2008 at 1:25 PM #

Just pitiful, really. BC isn’t strong or fast enough for us to look this bad. As bad as our LBs are, might as well just play 7 DBs.

  24. redfred2 10/04/2008 at 1:28 PM #

Good thing for that penalty, this is becoming a BC offensive clinic.

  25. BJD95 10/04/2008 at 1:34 PM #

    That was flat-out embarrassing.
