The bye-week coaching conversation entry

As a follow-up to this interesting entry from earlier in the week, I think that the Wolfpack’s off-week provides us a perfect time to discuss some interesting coaching developments across the country.

It isn’t as if there aren’t any interesting match-ups this weekend; the college football schedule is full of great games. Of particular interest in the ACC Atlantic is the match-up, coaching stability vs coaching instability with Jim Grobe’s Wake Forest Demon Deacons (3-1) battle Tommy Bowden’s Clemson Tigers (3-2) at 7:45 p.m. tonight night on ESPN.

If Tommy Bowden is to keep his job safe, a win over Wake Forest is in order. But which Wake Forest team will show up, the one that forced seven turnovers and five interceptions at Florida State or the one that lost to Navy at home? Sad sidebar: Clemson IT nazis caught Bowden posting his resume on Craig’s List this week. Winner: Tigers.

The heat on Bowden is legitimate and is growing. The folks at “Coachesonthehotseat.com” rank Bowden’s seat as the 7th hottest in the country but I think that they are being a tad conservative.

Ranked one spot ahead of Bowden on the site is Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville. From an outsider’s perspective any pressure on Tuberville appears absurd but I admit that I haven’t researched the situation enough to be educated enough to comment.

Regardless, Tuberville’s dismissal this week of his second offensive coordinator in the last six games stretching back to last year is absolutely fascinating. The Tony Franklin firing is all over the place with videos as well as commentary like this from Tony Barnhardt of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The Auburn fans are frustrated because the Tigers began the season as a Top 10 team and were excited by the new offense based on what they had seen in the win over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. But for Tuberville to say that he was staying the course on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday only to fire Franklin on Wednesday left a lot of Auburn fans angry. They want some answers. They want to know if Tuberville simply made a bad decision to bring in the spread offense or was the bad decision to hire Franklin as the guy to implement it. The spread was a pretty radical departure from Auburn’s football philosophy under Tuberville and it’s clear that every phase of the offense—not just quarterback—was having adjustment problems. The offensive line, which was young last season but showed a lot of promise for 2008, kept making mistakes. Hugh Nall is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country but this offense asked the big guys to do a lot of new things. It clearly wasn’t working for anybody.

Just FYI, the Wake-Clemson game is tonight on ESPN.
    7:30 I think.

  2. grouchomarx 10/09/2008 at 3:27 PM #

No way Bowden gets fired this year after getting a fat raise and contract extension last year, no matter what. Unless he gets caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy.

p.s. “Smart Football” is a great read.

  3. Daily Update 10/09/2008 at 3:34 PM #

I am pulling for Bowden tonight. I hope Clemson continues having just good enough seasons for him to keep his job. IMO, it is better for NC State for Wake/Grobe to come back to Earth.

  4. bradleyb123 10/09/2008 at 3:40 PM #

Why is it OK for Clemson fans to put heat on (and possibly fire) Bowden, but it was not OK for NC State fans to put the heat on Herb Sendek?

Bowden has arguably done more for Clemson football than Sendek did for NC State basketball.

SFN: LOL!! There is NO arguing about it. Bowden’s successes at Clemson significantly dwarf what Sendek achieved at NC State

Grobe will end up at either Virginia or Penn State. Just a matter of one of those jobs opening up.

He would be at Nebraska today if it weren’t for Tom Osborne insisting that he would have to hire some “Nebraska people” to be a part of his staff. Jim had too much integrity to accept that.

  6. bradleyb123 10/09/2008 at 3:42 PM #

I couldn’t agree with you more, “Daily Update”. I’m tired of Wake Forest enjoying all this success. They just happened to get DECENT at a time when the rest of the ACC is way down. I remember some of Amato’s early teams (with Rivers, of course) that would have put a major smackdown on these Wake Forest teams. Wake is just benefiting from a weak ACC conference right now.

Grobe should left for the fat raise while he could. When Wake sinks back down into mediocrity where they belong, he’ll wish he did.

  7. Pack92 10/09/2008 at 4:09 PM #

From what I have seen of Wake and Grobe, they aren’t going to sink anywhere. The talent level of the ACC may go up but Wake plays sound, fundamental, error-free football. You don’t need top-5 talent to win with guys like that. And if you CAN recruit guys to play your brand of football and get the ones you want, so much the better. Wake doesn’t go down until Grobe goes away – maybe to Auburn or Tennessee.

  8. bradleyb123 10/09/2008 at 4:30 PM #

I think Wake was darn LUCKY that Riley Skinner turned out so good. When he is gone (next year), Wake begins their descent back into mediocrity. Skinner rivals Rivers in some of his numbers. A QB like that can do a lot for a program. Just ask NC State. And look what happened when he graduated.

  9. wufpaxno1 10/09/2008 at 6:24 PM #

Wake was on the upward path before Skinner arrived, and he would not have even been the starter in their ACC Championship year in Ben Mauk had not gotten hurt. Skinner is very good, but Wake will not go down without him. Wake is a solid program built the right way, and Grobe is arguably the best coach in the ACC right now.

Grobe isn’t going to Virginia. He may go to Penn State, Auburn, or Tennessee, but not Virginia or Clemson either for that matter. This man has it good where he is at, Wake is upgrading its facilities, he gets along very well with their AD. Some of you are underestimating what he and his staff are being paid, WAY underestimating. Arkansas threw a lot of money at him and Wake was able to make him an offer sufficient enough to reel him back in. Wake is a private school and does not have to disclose what they pay their coaches. It is a school that churns out Doctors and Lawyers with very deep pockets, there may not be many of them, but their pockets are deep.

We can only hope that TOB can achieve the same success or higher here. The difference is that Wake Forest Fans were complacent before Grobe got there and therefore were a lot more patient then we are apt to be.

  10. grouchomarx 10/09/2008 at 6:41 PM #

you WF haters better wake up and look in the mirror-dont you realize TOB is trying to build EXACTLY THE SAME KIND OF PROGRAM-his players, not flashy, lots of redshirt upperclassmen. He’s not looking to go to another school, neither is Grobe. You will be crowing about the same successes WF is having in 3-5 years. Its not luck, its good sound fundamental coaching.

  11. TOBtime 10/09/2008 at 7:35 PM #

Tell it like it is groucho. TOB is doing exactly what Grobe has done at Wake AND what he did at BC.
Ditto the money for Grobe. I can assure you it would shock MANY people to just know the compensation neighborhood he and his coaching staff are living. The next place he coaches at will be the last and he may be there now.

  12. 61Packer 10/09/2008 at 7:48 PM #

SFN, I agree that Tommy Bowden’s successes at Clemson significantly dwarf what Herb Sendek accomplished at NC State, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Bowden has accomplished a lot at Clemson.

You could put Herb Sendek’s accomplishments at State on the edge of a razor blade, and it would be like rolling a bb shot down I-85/40 through Burlington.

Somebody PLEASE tell me what Wolfpack basketball has accomplished since the 1980s. I’d like to know that my money spent on LTR seats in the Arena has been worth it and will be worth it in the coming seasons.

As for football, I’d rather have Tom O’Brien anyday than I had Tommy Bowden. Better things are coming for the Wolfpack on the gridiron.

^That comparison is just not fair, where is cedargrove?

  14. VaWolf82 10/09/2008 at 9:04 PM #

    where is cedargrove?

Maybe he is moving back to Mebane.

  15. wufpup76 10/09/2008 at 9:07 PM #

The Wake-Clemson game isn’t exactly enhancing the league’s football rep. at the moment …

  16. Greywolf 10/09/2008 at 10:40 PM #

The comments section following the Tony Franklin article was a hoot. It would be a smart hire to bring in Tony Franklin as a consultant to be available to Bible and the other offensive coaches. Troy under Tony Franklin ran up some numbers (and a few wins) on some SEC teams and OSU. Auburn was having worse problems than NCSU moving the ball with the spread and they didn’t have the depth issues we have. Overall our coaches are doing an excellent job installing the spread. Having a guru on call couldn’t hurt.

  17. blpack 10/09/2008 at 11:12 PM #

Wake won a riveting game. Seriously a win is a win. They are recruiting guys now who will play in the NFL. Didn’t happen much before. Wake will drop a little as the division talent level rises, then again maybe they won’t. It’s up to us to get better. I think we will.

  18. old_pcorone 10/10/2008 at 3:30 AM #

    Good for the Deacons!
    a laborious win in a griding game….

now how in the name of heck can a small scholl accomplish so much?

  19. ADS95 10/10/2008 at 7:08 AM #

Grobe could end up at UVa for two reasons:

    1. UVa has deeper pockets than Wake…they churn out plenty of doctors and lawyers, too, but are a bigger school.

    2. He’s an Alumnus of UVa.

He didn’t take the Arkansas job because they’d just run a coach out of town that won lots and lots of games. Coaching in the SEC is damn, damn tough.

I would say that Penn State would be a perfect fit for him. Is there anyone on the Paterno coaching tree that has had Div-I success?

  20. Wolf Dog 10/10/2008 at 7:24 AM #

IPTAY got some deep pockets. They would buy out Tommy’s contract in a heart beat for the right replacement.

Don’t be surpirsed if Butch Davis or should I say Chief Davis, don’t end up at Auburn or somewhere else. All he needs is a little success at UNX and he’ll jump ship at the first big offer in my opinion. Wouldn’t surprise me if he goes back to the sunshine state or the NFL.

  21. Noah 10/10/2008 at 8:15 AM #

Penn State’s next coach is going to Greg Schiano if they don’t promote from within. He believes it anyway, it’s why he turned down the Michigan job last year.

Butch Davis will go back to the NFL right around the time that I get my next NFL coaching gig. But I do think that he’ll leave Chapel Hill.

And am I the only one who thinks that comparing the job a college basketball coach does/did and the job that a college football coach does/did is inevitably going to reach unsustainable conclusions?

If you’re Jim Valvano, you can take a very talented team, piddle through the regular season, make the NCAA tournament and then turn it on, peaking at just the right time and people think you’re a great coach. He did in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990.

You do that in college football…and you’re Tommy Bowden and you’re going to get fired this year.

Flip it around, if you’re a college basketball coach and you CRUISE through the regular season and then come up a bit short in the post-season, you’re Ray Meyer at Depaul. Do it in college football, and you’re Bo Schembechler and they name library after you.

Great analysis. Is Schiano still at Rutgers? I wasn’t too impressed with them when I saw them against UNC, but I guess this is a rebuilding year? If Rutgers sinks back into mediocrity, Schiano has blown his chance at the PSU job, hasn’t he? He must have been counting on JoePa retiring in the next year or two when he didn’t jump to a bigger job last year…

  23. bradleyb123 10/10/2008 at 8:55 AM #

Did Noah actually take a poke at Jim Valvano???

Valvano was a great coach. If he had Dean’s talented players, he would have had MULTIPLE national championships. He knew how to coach come tournament time.

As for 1983, State had a great team. When Whittenberg went down with that broken foot, it broke more than his foot. It broke the team and the chemistry. So no one knew how good they were. When he returned late in the season, everyone saw how good they were and thought it was just luck. No luck, friends. They were good. It’s just that nobody knew it. It probably helped State since no one expected them to do what they did, so they were able to fly below the radar, even though they were winning postseason games. People thought their luck would run out. But it wasn’t luck. It was skill, and skill doesn’t run out.

    GO PACK!!!

  24. bradleyb123 10/10/2008 at 8:59 AM #

Wake is the luckiest team in the history of college football. Third and 24 DEEP in their own territory. Most high school teams would have been able to stop that first down conversion! But the luck of the Irish, I mean, Deacs, pulled them out once again. Every year it happens. They were a yard away from being down four touchdowns against Maryland last year (or year before), and took a pick six 100 yards for a score. Obviously, they have some talent, but they have a LOT of luck, too. Take Riley Skinner out of the mix and they are a middle -to-lower tier team in the ACC.

Give them another year or two and you’ll see. Especially as the rebuilding teams like State and Carolina are finally rolling right along. Wake will be an afterthought.

  25. BJD95 10/10/2008 at 9:17 AM #

I don’t see how Wake is lucky. Clemson had ONE SUSTAINED DRIVE the entire game. Wake kicked Clemson’s ass, just like they kicked FSU’s. If they tighten up and start converting more of their scoring opportunities, they’ll beat teams by 50.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. As long as Brad Wellman is the Wake Forest AD, Jim Grobe will be the Wake Forest football coach. Count on it.

That said, I hope our TV contract isn’t up soon – ACC football has been nothing short of unwatchable this year.
