Marlyand 27 – NC State 24 FINAL

The Wolfpack defense yields a drive to their two-yard line as the clock melts towards zeros, and Maryland makes a field goal try to once again put the Pack in the “Close, But No Cigar” department.   No moral victory, this.

24-24 nearing end of 3rd quarter.

17-17 at the half.  On offense, State looks pretty good, save for dropped balls that should have been caught.  Defense is, as usual, suspect.  Thin to begin with and depleted by injuries, this unit is undoubtedly a recruiting focus for Tom O’Brien and his staff.

Long, sustained drive by the Pack to open the game. NC State 7, Maryland 0.

I will not be able to update much longer, so please be active in the comments, especially if you have ESPN360!

I’m really not sure what our defense is capable of stopping. Teams have thrown at will… and today UMd is running at will.

A 95-yard drive from the UMd 8 with 3 minutes to go to win the game?

    ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME???

The offense looks just fine… the defense either has a SEVERE talent deficit or a SEVERE coaching inadequacy, or both. TOB has to rectify it via recruiting or staff changes, or he’s not going to have a very happy career-closing tenure here.

I’m sick of losing because we can’t stop a Pop Warner Team from scoring, especially when it matters most.

fereaking A – how frustrating is that?
Well, as has been said repeatedly – this year is a wash and any win is a steal. Oh, how ECU must be hating that they got beat by us, lol.

UVa is up by 7 with the ball and 15 seconds left. Looks like they will win. Their second conference victory?

I know that this season is a wash and that any victory is just icing on the cake but it doesn’t make losing games like we have to BC, FSU, and Maryland any easier.

    WTNY. WTNY. WTNY. ….

the defense had such a collapse on the last drive. MD OL owned them. So msny poor tackling. I know we’re thin, but how can there be that much of a drop off?

  8. phillypacker 10/25/2008 at 5:34 PM #

Wilson made very good decisions and Brown was a stud. The OL also played very well.

The one bad decision I saw today by RW was taking the sack on our last drive. Zero chance for a FG at that point.

Defense can’t use the excuse of being tired this time.

    TOP = NCSU 36:00 / UM 24:00

In every game this year, except for South Florida, if we could have stayed strong defensively through the 4th, we would have been in a very strong position to win.I think to win, we have to score a lot of points and just hope to hold on defensively. These guys just can’t play more than about 3 quarters.

  11. phillypacker 10/25/2008 at 5:39 PM #

That was a very bad sack.

“A 95-yard drive from the UMd 8 with 3 minutes to go to win the game?”

    A FG from the -3?

Not playing the what if game but just an observation…The Fumble by Brown. If the game hadn’t been any different they’d have to drive for a TD just to tie. Completely changes the play calling and how tight the Maryland players would be.

The point being that this team has zero margin for error.

We got a very good break that ended up being very bad break with that catch in the endzone. had that been ruled a touchdown, which it probably should have been, we would have had the ball with 35 seconds left to mount a final drive. I don’t know if it could have worked, but it would have been a very different scenario.

I’m so sick of losing like this but I’ll take close games any day over USF blowouts.

OL looked good. TJ looked terrible.

We just can’t seem to win games.

Just a question but is there anyone on the defense that knows how to win a game except Irving? I ask the question because other than Wilson and Brown on offense (and Irving on D) I can’t think of anyone that has shown they have the ability to step up and make the plays necessary to win a game.

Okay I’m done ranting. Going to just put the laptop down and walk away before I go off the deep end and start saying stupid stuff like a Tarhole.

As a student I really don’t care anymore. NCSU athletics has been a train wreck and the highlights can be counted on 1 hand since I got here. I am getting sick and tired of seeing the D give up the big play on 3rd down and I am tired of seeing overly conservative play calling. It was obvious that when UNC hired Butch Davis that they wanted a NC in football and we responded by hiring TOB so that we could be competitive and appear in lower bowl games. I fear that football will get buried and this state will be blue in both basketball (UNC & Duke) and football (UNC). I am not one to easily concede to negative thinking but it is hard not when we could possibly be the worst franchise in the ACC in everything. Even the student news paper is printing more and more negative cartoons pointed towards the athletic department. Maybe one day we will be good…

if our defensive coordinator had a scrotum, we could be 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the league.

    ^ Yeah . . . right!!

That is now three times the defense has blown the game for us late in the game: BC, FSU and Maryland. Oh well, at least we have shown some fight. That’s about the only good thing I can say, aside from RW just being an absolute stud at such a young age. Glennon is in for a tough competition this spring. If Duke beats us, which is now quite possible, I’m out. Maybe we should have gotten Cutcliffe…

If the games ended today, you could have the Cavaliers from the University of Virginia taking on the Maryland Turtles in the ACC Championship game. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Wow.

It’s not about physical condition, time of possesion, and apparently we aren’t that over matched talent wise. It’s the mental conditioning in late games where players lose to the guy across them, its prevelant and it’s across the board.

The Coachs’ are not lousy because we call two rushing plays when we’re inside the thirty and have a twelve minute TOP advantage. Net 0 yards because the Terps (insert Noles, Eagles…) dug down deeper then our guys did, and it’s hard to imagine that when they get in those situations again there are going to be any better.

Duke beat Vandy today at Vandy.

    We’re no Vandy.

He must be new around here.

Wonder if the DC that stayed at BC could be talked into coming here now? I was leery of Archer when he came here. He coached one of the worst defenses in the country the year before he came to NCS. The only reason the team won any games was they could score 50 points every week. Find it hard to believe that it’s all a talent issue with the defense.

  25. MrPlywood 10/25/2008 at 9:05 PM #

Looking at the bright side, at least half the team is competing. It’s been a while since you could even say that about the Pack.
