Scattered Post-Game Thoughts

  • I strongly reiterate what I said after the South Florida beatdown. We are playing with house money this year, and have no right to expect anything positive. You know the old saying about bringing a knife to a gun fight? TOB and staff are bringing a spork.
  • Still, this one hurts, especially knowing that Chuck the Clown got to laugh at us again. Based on his reality-free media blitz last week, it’s clear that he’s not only a delusional narcissist (knew that already), but also a pathological liar. I had a work thing last night and couldn’t attend live, but every time I saw his face on TV, I wanted to punch him in the nose.
  • As noted above, my attention was distracted by my work event, although my wonderful co-workers gave me the seat with the best TV visibility (a few even wore red ties as a show of support for me, which was very cool). I predicted that the late FG in the first half would come back to haunt State, but I had the slightest bit of hope. Then, out of the corner of my eye with the 3rd quarter about to start, I saw the time of possession – and knew the game was over. This feeling did not change when I got in my car, turned on the radio, and heard we had scored to take a 17-13 lead, with FSU facing 3rd and 17. I knew they would make it, and knew they would win. That’s an awful feeling.
  • Anyone who’s surprised Nate Irving re-injured himself hasn’t been a State fan very long. Frankly, I’m surprised he made it through the first quarter in one piece.
  • As I watched the last few minutes at home, the camera focused on a fan in the front row, with his head buried in his hands. It was hard to tell if he was distraught, passed out drunk, or both. Regardless, it was the perfect microcosm of the State fan experience.
  • When Sid was on TV, one of my colleagues (Duke fan, and great guy) asked me what was more likely – State rallying to make a bowl game, or making the NCAAT this year. After a long pause, I chose football, simply due to the fact that ACC football sucks, so theoretically, anything can happen. But both are 30-1 shots, at least (I said this when State was up 10-3). It reminded me of the abject hopelessness of Wolfpack fandom, and how much it sucks to have your team suck at everything. There’s absolutely nothing to look forward to.
  • The only goal for this year is to avoid going 0-for the ACC. In such a weak conference, I’m not sure our program could recover from such a severe psychological blow. We would also set the all-time school record for most losses in a season. Right now, I put our chances at 50/50 – we have already lost our 2 most winnable home games (mediocre to bad opponents, with State having the psychological edge both times). Pray that we get the shitty version of Maryland in eight days – that and our November game at resurgent Duke are our last decent shots.
  • NC State will be at least a 5 point underdog in every remaining game on its schedule.

What do Andre, Jamelle, Russell, Willie, Alan Michael Cash, Ant. Hill, Owen Spencer, Jarvis Williams, George Bryan, DeAndre, have in common? Chuck recruits. Enough with the pile on and excuses.

What an absolutely horrid analysis. You managed to overlook the fact that State has seven walk-ons or former walk-ons on the two-deep playing every week. Chuck recruited some talent at some positions….and left large holes at other ones.

Correction, Russell is a Coach Avent recruit…he fell into Amato’s lap on accident. Thanks for the facilities Amato. We appreciate your heart and pride but we don’t appreciate that you ran our program into the ground. Get over it and move on. We have.

I’m very pleased with the way this team has performed considering that they’ve been grossly outmanned in all of their losses, both in scholarship-holders aavailable to play and experience. They’ve not quit or gotten down on themselves. A lot of the credit goes to TOB & Co. as well.

On another note, I’d like to see NCSU put together a strategic plan for Wolfpack athletics, much like what Duke did for its football program, that would be available for anyone to read. BUT 1) someone other than Foulup should be the leader of this effort, 2) it should have input from all interested areas – coaches, Athletics Department staff, administration/BOT, students, WPC members*, alumni*, etc. and 3) it should have an outside OBJECTIVE facilitator with credentials that relate to D1 athletics knowledge and experience – perhaps a retired AD or Bobby Purcell-type who is acknowledged as having performed well in that position. At least then those of us who have high aspirations for Wolfpack athletics could see what kind of overall support those aspirations have. And, if they are supported appropriately, there would be a model plan to follow and measure progress with in getting there. What do you guys think of this?

    * NOT just the big $$ guys either!

Yeah, we are playing with house money. But I am impressed with our offense more every week and in particular RW. He did not have the best game last night but play calling in the 4th led to some of that. Where the heck was George Bryan when we needed 5 yds across the middle? Are you telling me they would have covered him every time with hands like he has?

Our D is just, as pointed out many times above, is just too full of freshman who don’t have a clue. When they get a play right it’s a glimpse of things to come but when they get it wrong (Maddox) they really get it wrong. Good to see we do have athletes out there who will get better.

The de-cleater should make some highlight reels. The helmet-to-helmet call was so stupid and pointless it’s not even worth discussing. I’ll take that hit EVERY time. Unlike Ant Hill pushing his man 5 seconds after the play is over and getting called for that.

There is hope. Maybe not so much for this year but I’ll take a minor setback to go to the Peach Bowl next year and the championship game the year after.

We’ve got to have the worst safety tandem in the acc, if not the worst of all the BCS conference programs. Are they the worst tacklers on defense? that’s a pretty glaring deficiency for a safety to have. i understand that jC Neal is probably more suited to play corner, and Byers is just a freshman, but we need major improvement. Clem Johnson looks like a decent tackler; i can see why he was named the preseason starter. i think we could be ok with him and javon walker, but that will have to wait till next year.

i think we should be fine at linebacker next year as well, with Irving, Michel, Manning (hopefully), Lucas, Beasley, et al.

Cornerback position will be a mystery again.

“I wondered how long before we started blaming the refs”

I love posts like these. They add so much to the discussion.

tvp1 – Excellent points. I was really shocked at the calls in the 3rd quarter – they were ridiculous. I have no idea how in the hell you call a helmet to helmet personal foul when a QB is standing up running an option and he’s hit by a DB who was just burned because he tried to arm tackle the same QB. I thought that play – as much as any – served to swing momentum in the favor of FSU.

Our defense actually did a decent job of bending, but not breaking last night. They held FSU to 2 TDs, and gave up 4 FGs…While giving up 26 points will never be “stout” – their performance did give us a shot at a WIN last night. (As opposed to the D vs. BC which basically required that we score on every drive to TIE.)

We’re not too far off. In 3 ACC games, we’ve been tied or in the lead in the 4th quarter – and w/in shouting distance of the other. We may not win another game this year, but I think we’re starting to play smarter football. Hopefully, next year, we’ll bring some more athleticism to our DBs. (I have no idea why FSU wasn’t throwing jump balls all night.)

I love the coaches, love the players, see improvement game over game, we just need to recruit and we’ll get to the promised land, yada yada yada…

I want to think this is true, but WHO IS OUR RECRUITER(S) thats going to make this happen? If we have an ace recruiter I don’t know who it is-how do we land Billy blue chip vs. our competition? Somebody convince me this can become reality. thanks.

  8. McPete 10/17/2008 at 4:19 PM #

    groucho,
our coaches can clearly recruit. first, take a look at the great players on both sides of the ball that played at BC.

Manning, Glennon, Barnes, Lucas, Maddox, etc. were all sought-after prospects. they will be good, but maybe not right away. and when you’ve built your program, you don’t rely on freshman and sophmores to win. they wait behind juniors and seniors and get their chance when they are ready.

this staff doesn’t operate like our neighbors to the west, who have had more recruiting successes thus far. we know TOB will be honest with recruits and they know exactly where they will fit in, but i doubt they’re going to get their a$$e$ kissed and told they can play any position they want to. those guys are also national recognized as being great talent evaluators. that’s a reputation they brought from BC.

  9. grouchomarx 10/17/2008 at 4:25 PM #

thanks McPete, but is there one or more main recruiters as Dabo Swinney is being touted at Clemson? I’m not looking for instant gratification, just want to know who can recruit us to the next level. Is it a group thing or what?

We will be UNC-Chapel Hill. I promise you.

  11. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 10/17/2008 at 5:25 PM #

The pass d is awful but it isn’t the kids fault. They looked tiny when trying to defend. If Chuck had so much talent why did he lose his last 7 games as State’s head coach.

Why is it the ACC can’t find officials that are in shape? That crew last night looked like they should be doing ‘Bojangles’ tailgate special commercials. I think I saw one flag come from about 40 yards away and about 10 seconds after the play. Does the ACC buy the ‘Opti-Grab’ glasses from Navin of The Jerk?

The biggest ‘F’ goes to the traffic control people. Getting into the game wasn’t that bad all things considered but at 11:15 at night to have to sit in traffic for an hour before moving at all is a disgrace. Especially when you pay to park in the stadium and the freebies move out first.

Seems like city, state fairgrounds, NC State and the Carolina Hurricanes could fund a pedestrian bridge over Trinity Rd. Absurd that the Troopers have to stop traffic every 5 minutes for 10 minutes to allow people to cross Trinity Rd.

“We will be UNC-Chapel Hill. I promise you.”

    I hope not … 😉

  13. Dogbreath 10/17/2008 at 8:22 PM #

For someone who plays second base and spends a helluva lot of time throwing across his body, its surprising that Russell Wilson has a toug time throwing footballs running to his left.

  14. smile102 10/17/2008 at 8:39 PM #

“^It is not blaming the refs if you are simply pointing out the screw ups– like the absolutely ridiculous helmet-to-helmet call.”

The problem w/”if only this call had been different” or “another foot and he would have caught the ball and scored” is that the other team can id close plays that went against them, that we do not include in our “if only….” scenarios of victory grasped from us. Better teams tend to win more of the close calls during a game to win the game. It’s not just chance or bad luck or bad refs or bad breaks; but to complain that a bad call dealt the defeat is a bit of bad sport.

  15. MatSci94 10/17/2008 at 11:12 PM #

In consecutive games we have had long TD passes. Its been a long time since that has happened.

I’m not sure I agree that the DBs need to be much closer to the line. Even 10 yards off they get beaten. I did notice that in the second half with the trips formations one of the DBs would come up to the line to disrupt the screens.

Two weeks in a row we have scored in the 4th quarter to tie or take the lead.

  16. Sw0rdf1sh 10/18/2008 at 7:58 AM #

The Refs should all be at home knowing they gave us the Hochili Thursday night.

That was a series of incredibly bad calls, and I swear it seemed like someone was giving us the Tim Donaughy.

That Helmet to Helmet was as poor of a call I’ve seen this year in any game. Game changers on a 3rd down need to occur by the players, not the zebras.

  17. ryno84 10/18/2008 at 1:05 PM #

Throwing on the run is hard enough, across your body is even harder. Russell throwing on the run across his body at a moving target is much more difficult that pivoting to throw at a stationary 1st baseman. I think we get spoiled by Wilson’s abilities and when something goes wrong we are disappointed. For a RS-Fr he’s doing great. I’ll take a bad day by RW than a good day by Beck or DE anytime.

  18. SEAT.5.F.2 10/18/2008 at 3:14 PM #

Good point, the baseball/football analogy is just ??? We love RW because is is athletically gifted, brings leadership, and is overall a great rep of NC State. As a RS freshman that is impressive, but combining ” we (State) get spoiled” in anything sports related is a big oxy morons.

Watched UMd earlier, they looked great. Watching some of UNC, they look great…uuhhhhhh

  19. SEAT.5.F.2 10/18/2008 at 6:42 PM #

…or not so great. Great job by UVa in that one, can’t say the UNC played all that bad considering they seem to be getting some production now rushing the ball. They probably fell in love a bit with it in OT, not trying a forward pass other then a bubble screen is going pretty conservative.

What do Andre, Jamelle, Russell, Willie, Alan Michael Cash, Ant. Hill, Owen Spencer, Jarvis Williams, George Bryan, DeAndre, have in common?

    None of them are OL-men?

Take on the refs: No, the refs are not to blame for the loss. Stats like 1 for 9 on 3rd down vs. 10 for 17 for the other team and 38:16 TOP vs. 21:44 are closer to the truth. However, for one team to get 5 penalties called in the first half and 1 in the second half is a little mind-boggling. I’m sure they didn’t improve from the 118th (or something like that) most penalized team in the country to one of the best over halftime. On that note, I think seeing Chuck back on the sideline caused some nostalgia for NI and Ant Hill as they committed those late hit penalties.

If I were the a Wolfpack opponent, I’d ask the refs if it were legal to forgo 1st and 2nd down and immediately skip to 3rd down and any distance. 1st down is almost guaranteed.

Good things: running the ball, no turnovers, RW not looking to run at the first sign of pressure, having a chance at the end of the game (pretty bad when a non-blowout is a good thing), DL, Bobby Bowden’s answer to the question, “How do you get your team to stop holding”

Thought towards the end of the game: The difference in 8 years is huge. FSU comes to town in Chuck/PR’s first year and absolutely destroys the Wolfpack. Thursday, a decent FSU team comes to town and scores a semi-late touchdown to beat a Wolfpack team with many issues/problems

Late to the party as always but here are my takes:
    1. I saw significant improvement on the field
    2. The defense is way too thin to spend so much time on the field so their performance is directly tied to the offensive troubles.
    3. Linebacker and defensive secondary play needs more improvement – I can see a portion of the weakness being under a microscope in this game with FSU’s tall and talented receivers.
    4. Offense is showing signs of becoming a solid unit – somewhat better blocking, healthier running racks, RW gaining experience as the most striking examples.
    5. I do see the “TOB way” taking hold

  22. Greywolf 10/19/2008 at 2:19 PM #

    Not much to add here.

I still think our offense shows little imagination. Even UNX is running some flanker options. It doesn’t take a football genius to understand, “Getting the ball in the hands of our most skilled players.” We don’t have to give the ball to TJ Graham every time but the threat of his turning the corner with his speed would slow down the pursuit in the other direction making life much easier on Brown and Eugene when they break into the secondary.

I do wonder what the “we’ll never amount to anything and I’ve given up hope” people are trying to accomplish. Do you want sympathy, do you want the others to join in abandoning the Pack? Are you trolls? What is the point of incessant negative comments?

Please don’t use the “It’s the truth” BS as your excuse. It is at best opinion and more accurately falls in the subversion category.

  23. Primewolf 10/19/2008 at 9:36 PM #

We were beat by a better team, but the amazing thing is that they were not that much better, in spite of the fact of all those heraled recruits vs our recruits. If the refs had called a decent game, we would have won the ballgame. FSU could have been called for 30 egregous holds, but the refs went to sleep and then called us for non calls. While we were screwed in that department, overall,it is amazing to me we hung with them and could have won the game. Can’t wait until we have a few more years of TOB and staff, although not sure if we should keep the DC.
