Russell Wilson to start for the Pack

I hate to post this entry as I think the two entries just below this are very important and deserve your attention and feedback.

wilson.jpgI don’t know many people who really weren’t expecting this news to be released today, but it is welcome news nonetheless – Russell Wilson will start for the Wolfpack on Saturday.

I’m a little disappointed in the way the media covers the Wolfpack’s injuries in light of – it is almost like the media forgets some players that are injured and can only remember the stars (like Nate Irving) or just the players that got hurt most recently.

I’ve heard rumors that Anthony Hill may be the healthiest he has been in a while and I haven’t heard any mention of Curtis Crouch’s status as the attention on the offensive line has now turned to Julian Williams’ injury. Any thoughts/information/updates that you have on the Wolfpack’s current injury situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Per pack pride- Julian Williams out, Hill probable, Irving out. Everyone else same as previous. That puts us in much better shape (including Wilson) than last week. Also, after Saturday, we have a week and a half between games for the next three weeks, so hopefully we can get healthy.

Oh that Tom O’Belichick and his cloud of secrecy concerning injuries!

  3. Greywolf 10/02/2008 at 7:29 PM #

Tom O’Belichick? Hey, that’s really original and very clever. Is there something in that little cutie that I’m missing? Perhaps it’s asuggestion that TOB has a crystal ball and can tell on Monday who for certain is going to be ready to practice on Thursday? Perhaps injury reports are given on a need to know basis.

  4. RBCRowdy 10/02/2008 at 7:33 PM #

Maybe it was a joke about us having to wonder if Russell was gonna play ever again after everyone got tight lipped on his injury. Or maybe it was an attack on NCSU, TOB, Russell Wilson, the NE Patriots, and you Greywolf.

J/C calm down, we’re all thrilled to have Wilson back.

The outlook for the game totally changes now.

It would be great if Hill could play significant minutes, adds to the odds we have positive run yards. Couldn’t hurt the play-action game either.

  6. RBCRowdy 10/02/2008 at 7:57 PM #

Hill has a chest injury right? I’d assume he’d be able to maintain good conditioning (as good as expected without playing games) and be effective as you say^.

  7. choppack1 10/02/2008 at 8:42 PM #

Russell starting for us is obviously critical. In the 3 games he’s started for us, we’ve been competitive while he was playing.

I think so far this year, our QBs have thrown 10 INTs – Wilson has thrown 1 of them.

  8. Dr. BadgerPack 10/02/2008 at 8:54 PM #

Good to see RW will be back.

I, for one, don’t think any coach should give more than an “in” or “out” on players. 18-22 year old’s medical situations shouldn’t be up for public consumption. This ain’t the pros.

Just and update and maybe a long shot but….

After Alan-Michael Cash went out after the Clemson game I heard from his family that he is trying to be back after three weeks. If he could make such a short time line that would put him back in action for Maryland or possibly FSU

If we could only be so lucky

  10. PhilipRiversWannabe 10/02/2008 at 10:39 PM #

i saw Cash last week. He was on crutches. If i had to guess i would said it would be at least a month before he could even think about coming back. Right around the Maryland is a pretty good assumption althought if the season has taken a turn for the worst i think he should just apply for a medical redshirt.

  11. ironhide 10/02/2008 at 11:33 PM #

    that’s to bad.

It looks like we might not be so lucky on that front.

i will have to get another update from his family and see what is his new projected return date. Like i said the last time i talked to his family it was the day after the doctors looked at his knee. Cash and his family might have been overly optimistic

RW back keeps hope alive this week. I’m excited to wake up and to hit the road by 7:30. Time to get some revenge for TOB.

On the recruiting front, we just landed a new TE, a much sought after WR from Ohio, and now a DE (that the holes were after). Good things!

Great news about RW, and glad to hear Hill may be able to go … Bryan has been really good for us in Hill’s absence, hopefully this will give us another weapon

This could be a low scoring “ball-control” game, Russell is definitely the guy to help us in that type of game …

Good news about the recruits, too

“‘This injury shows his mental toughness,’ O’Brien said. ‘Initially I was told it was going to be a lot longer, but within the space of a week he has willed himself to be healthy and ready to play.'”

I’m a State fan, but I think this whole situation is malarky. When you’re injured, you don’t “will yourself” back. You have to take the time it takes to heal. Mentally you may be ready, but physically you have to heal. If this is true, it may be that RW is coming back too soon and is risking making his injury worse.

I think truthfully, Wilson wasn’t very hurt (if at all) and TOB wanted BC to have as little valuable game film on us as possible. This game is so much more important to us than the USF game.

Long time reader – first post…

Can anyone tell me why we don’t have a formation with just Brown and Eugene in the backfield? Seriously.

  16. Scooter 10/03/2008 at 9:35 AM #

@Big — trick plays are great for keeping a defense off balance, but we’re having a hard enough time running our offense as normal. Dana Bible also runs a relatively conservative offensive scheme.

I know TOB instituted a read-option package, but with Wilson, Eugene, and Brown, it would be interesting to see a small wish-bone package as well. I don’t know how our line would be able to block for it, though, and with our propensity for injury, it seems like a huge risk to have all three of our primary backfield players on the field at the same time…

  17. choppack1 10/03/2008 at 10:29 AM #

    1) They may have practiced something like that. Eugene is just now in his 3rd game back.

    2) You have to practice that a lot – and if your line is having problems w/ their base assignments, they probably haven’t had much of a chance to practice it.

    3) our OL would have to hold long enough for the series of plays that you would like to run out of a spread like that (so you can do the fakes) – getting the D to react to the misdirection. I think think in most cases our coaches are just trying to give our backs enough room to get some positive running room.

    Bradleyb123,

You must not underestimate the power of the force. The mind can do amazing things including heal the body. The force is strong in Russell, the power to do great things he has. O-B one O’Brian will show the team the path but the journey is only for the strong and the lessons that he teaches must be protected. That is why he is using Jedi mind tricks and shrouds of secrecy to protect the team. To call this whole situation Malarky is the first step toward the dark side. And once you begin your journey to the dark side it will only lead you to Chapel Hole and sadness. Embrace your feelings and let the force be with you!
Go PACK! Its time to put on your shit kickers cause a bunch of Yankees are coming to town Saturday!

I was enjoying your post until I got to the “Chapel Hole” part. Bite your tongue, young Jedi!!!

“Go PACK! Its time to put on your shit kickers cause a bunch of Yankees are coming to town Saturday!”

    I agree, and LOL!

The question is- How long will it take before Wilson is injured again?

  21. BoKnowsNCS71 10/03/2008 at 1:19 PM #

What? 2 players healed? That rain during last weeks deluge at CF must have been partially picked up from Lourdes.

  22. choppack1 10/03/2008 at 2:10 PM #

This should be an interesting game. BC has only lost 1 game – but the other teams they’ve beaten – Kent State, UCF and Rhode Island – have 1 win a piece.

They’ve been playing in the sandbox w/ the kids thus far. OTOH, we’ve played 4 games against solid competition. This is also BC’s first game in a hostile environment (how hostile remains to be seen.)

Also worth noting, we’re 13th in the country w/ TO’s gained this year. Unfortunately, we’re on the other end of the scale w/ TO’s lost. The good news is that we’re starting the QB who is responsible for only 10% of our INTs. I don’t think there’s any question that this teams dynamic changes when RW is out there.

The bad news is that after 5 games, Wilson has missed 2 starts, and has been knocked out of 1 game. BC looks pretty stout on D – but remember, they’ve been doing against mediocre competition.

I hope BC thinks they will walk all over us. We should have a good shot this weekend.

Can anyone tell me why we don’t have a formation with just Brown and Eugene in the backfield? Seriously.

On the surface that sounds like a good idea, however, it wouldn’t work. The defense would just stuff the box, perhaps even with all eleven players, but certainly eight or nine. At that point you would have fewer blockers than defenders and the plays would be shut down cold.

You simply have to have some pass threat to get the numbers in your favor. That’s why a somewhat balanced offense is always more successful in the long-term than one that is one-dimensional. Gone are the days when a team can inflict its will with a single aspect of the game without the threat of other facets.

Why is it that prior to kick off when AC/DC Thunderstruck is played does the crowd not sing ‘thunder’?

  25. StateFans 10/03/2008 at 2:32 PM #

    Because we’re State fans.

Seriously, State fans really don’t do the same level of concerted crowd efforts that we possibly could do. Other than the “Red/White” or “Wolf/Pack” what do we do at CFS besides the much-hated “First Down!” yell?

I would like to see the four sides of the stadium do an “N” “C” “S” “U” where the NEZ does the N, the West does the C and so forth. But we can’t even get that going.

And if the fans start the Wolf/Pack cheer when we have the ball one more time, I might lose it.
