Irving Out Again with Ankle Injury

anklesprain.jpg“He’s out again. I don’t know how long. Indefinitely,” O’Brien said. O’Brien said Irving “got rolled on again” in Thursday night’s loss to Florida State.

Maybe he’ll be back for the Big 4 Tourney starting 11/8.

NI showed he would play even though he was not 100% and FSU showed us what every team will do from here out by looking like the are cut blocking but at the last moment turning into a barrell roll. Watch the replay and it is the most crystal clear moment I’ve have ever seen of a team trying to re injure a player.

Maybe he will be ready by thurs official line up, lets hope. W/O NI the Fridge is going be licking his chops…more then usual and not because there is a new Quiznos next to Byrd Stadium.

heywood-bey versus our defensive back 7, ugh

I think the Fridge likes Jimmy John’s subs better anyway.

The depth chart was also released today and it has Willie Young behind Jeff Rieskamp at DE. What in the world? The guy had 2 sacks Thursday. Injured? Discipline?

I made it a point to watch Irving on the play he was injured. The FSU lineman looked like he cut blocked Irving and then rolled him. It looked intentional. (Of course, that may be the way most linemen block downfield these days.) It just looked bad. I knew he would be hurt before he got up. Sure ’nuff…..

    From TOB’s press conference today:

“It is based on performance. He had a performance there [against FSU], but when you grade the tape, and specifically what he is doing in terms of the defense, Rieskamp is playing the defense, as called and coached, better.

But, as I said all the time, individuals have opportunities to make plays. Certainly, one of the things about being player of the game, individual sacks and things like that, and he can certainly do those things for you.

But on a consistent basis, Rieskamp on performance, has performed better than he has. That includes run… everything… or he wouldn’t be on the depth chart the way it is.”

I remember when there used to be a rule called “blocking below the waist.”

Whatever happened to this seemingly essential and common sense rule?

  9. PackerInRussia 10/20/2008 at 10:00 PM #

^ It got replaced by “helmet to helmet” (at least on Thursday)

    NCAA Rules:
Article 2 a. Blocking below the waist is the INITIAL contact below the waist with any part of the blocker’s body against the opponent, other than the runner. When in question, the contact is below the waist.
    b. Blocking below the waist applies to the INITIAL contact by a blocker against an opponent who has both feet on the ground. A blocker who makes contact above the waist and then slides below the waist has not blocked below the waist. If the blocker first contacts the opposing player’s hands at the waist or above, it is a legal “above the waist block”.

I have spoken with JR family, very nice folks. He was actually an outstanding Butterfly swimmer (swimming for folks out there) and could have picked either sport for Div 1. One of the only other athletes that I have heard of that were amazing swimmers and revenue sports participants would be Tim Duncan. He has to be controlled by some of the coaches because he goes all out each play in practice and his energy level is off the charts. They even mentioned him in the ESPN broadcast as being the D version of this team as JE is to offense, the energizer bunny. He is one to watch for sure Wolfpack fans.

They also mentioned that Coach Horton is very highly regarded in Cincinnati throughout. Currently BC has to of their starting OL from Cincy and their standout DE Albright (not sure if he is hurt.) Besides JR we have now received a verbal from a TE (Talbert) and we are hoping to get a LB from St. Xavier (TOB’s alma).

I love WY, had/have hopes AA will pan out but the contrast between CTC’s funshine boys and TOB’s recruits seem a sark contrast. Obviously they are all Wolpacker’s forever and for that we cheer with everything we got. Go Wolfpack!

Rieskamp had an awesome game against FSU. He single-handedly shut down or turned inside some of their sweeps and pass to the flats when everyone else (it looked like) was fooled. It looks like he handles blockers better but does not have the pure straight ahead speed of WY.

That’s a beautiful diagram of an ankle.
    We’re fearfully and wonderfully made.

And, apparently, intentionally destroyed by FSU.

I would almost rather take Nate off the field, let Maddox learn and have 2 really good linebackers next year instead of a severe injury to Nate this year. This year is a bust and we need Nate healthy for the next 2 years as we get our linebacker pipeline flowing.

SFN: Hopefully more than two. Sterling Lucas is playing very well when given the chance this season as well. Terrell Manning will hopefully be recovered and William Beasley will also have been redshirtted along with a more experienced Ray Michel and backup freshmen Audi Cole. Lots of young talent at LB.

Can people quit using so many initials, this is not texting? It makes it impossible to read your post.

  16. Ismael 10/21/2008 at 9:40 AM #

Rick i was thinking the same thing; at least spell half the name like JeffRiesk.

Howlie, on point about how we are created and its amazing yet fragile nature

SFN: if someone just happened to find SFN on the internets and saw the picture of the guy with his head up his butt and the ankle diagram they just might think we are a blog for weird science.

“Thing to do with Smails is cut here right behind the ankle…he’ll go back with his weight on his back foot and it will just stay there..push everything to right. He’ll quit the game.”

I’ve thought the same thing before, just hrow the young guys in the fire, get them primed and ready to take this program to the next level.

Problem with that approach is that you are spinning your wheels aa a green player if your team is laying eggs out there. It becomes mental that you can’t get off the field on third down, get teams in long yardage situations and let them off the hook. The young guys on the team would be better served seeing and competing alongside players like Nate because they can realize there potential now and not just accept from the coachs that if they keep working at it then someday that won’t get rolled up.

  18. Noah 10/21/2008 at 10:02 AM #

If you want to play for TOB, watch Rieskamp. When he got here, everyone told me that he was the guy that really made the coaches perk up.

    Practice like you play.

    Noah,
I remember you mentioning that the coachs were high on him and it seems his hard work is starting to pay off. Lets hope the two guys your sources say look impressive (Allen & Barnes) also come out ready to compete on the two deep next year.

have you heard anything about our freshman DB’s. There is quite a few and one would hope atleast a couple could pan out, hopefully sooner then later. I think it was CJ WIlson (#46) who got the honor of carrying the state flag out, a distinction for the best of the scout team for D. If it was him I was surprised because he looked physically impressive, alot bigger then I thought he would be
