FSU Game Thread

I didn’t check with anyone on game threads vs chat room for the games. So I’ll start a game thread and we’ll see what format everyone likes best.

General Reminder

We had a troll wander in during the South Florida game. If that should ever happen again, just ignore him and we’ll clean up the trash soon.

7:50 – Nice sack by Willie Young…but followed by a 17 yard completion because of a 10 yard cushion from State’s secondary.

7:55 – 3rd and 18 at mid-field after two FSU penalties…need to hold here.

7:58 – 2 NCSU sacks on FSU’s first possesion….pretty darn good. Also got relatively good field position considering that FSU got to mid-field before they started backing up.

8:01 – I have to agree with the TV commentators….didn’t expect to see power running from NCSU.

8:03 – Where has this offense been?

8:05 – Looked like pass interference on replay…but the ball was still catchable. Early FG gives NCSU a 3-0 lead.

NCSU Drive Stats
A. Brown – 4 rushes for 29 yds
J. Eugene – 1 rush for 14 yds
R. Wilson – 3 of 4 for 29 yds

8:08 – Bad decisionn by N. Irving on the late hit. Smith had taken two steps after he went out of bounds.

8:11 – Nice tackle in the backfield by A. Holmes.

8:12 – Thanks FSU for the holding….huge cushion for FSU receivers in the secondary.

8:13 – How did no one for NCSU knock that pass down? Glad it was dropped.

8:14 – 15 yd punt by FSU. Need to back FSU up and let them try and punt from deep in their end of the field.

8:15 – 18 yds by J. Eugene. Talking heads say that is our longest run of the year.

8:19 – End of 1st qtr. This has been far better than I expected. It will be interesting to see if NCSU can keep running like this all game.

8:21 – 6 rushes for 61 yds. Pretty surprising to say the least.

8:23 – Close call…but pretty clear that the ground caused the fumble.

8:25 – How’s this for a drive summary?
1st-10, NCSt38 – J. Eugene rushed to the right for 18 yard gain
1st-10, FLSt44 – R. Wilson passed to O. Spencer to the left for 13 yard gain
1st-10, FLSt31 – R. Wilson incomplete pass to the right
2nd-10, FLSt31 – J. Eugene rushed up the middle for 11 yard gain
1st-10, FLSt20 – R. Wilson passed to A. Hill to the left for 20 yard touchdown

8:33 – State’s secondary looks like 2003 all over again.

8:34 – It may actually look worse than 2003.

8:35 – NCSU is giving 10 yd cushions to the WRs….so Jimbo calls for a run?

8:36 – That probably won’t count as a sack…but it is just as good. 10-3 NCSU leading.

8:40 – That quick hitter to the WRs is netting very little. Hopefully Bible is setting up something else…because those plays aren’t doing much.

8:43 – Backing up FSU won’t matter if the secondary keeps giving huge cushions to FSU’s WRs. Need to force a 3 and out and get some good field position.

8:48 – NCSU needs to keep a spy on Ponder. He’s rushing for more yardage than their RBs.

8:51 – Cutting the tape off N. Irving’s ankle…that’s not good.

8:54 – First Irving, now they’re looking at JC Neal.

8:55 – Another holding call on FSU’s OL….great job by the DL so far.

8:58 – Holding call cancels another FSU first down. 4 holding calls so far. Followed up by NCSU’s third sack of the night.

9:03 – Great strip to save a TD. FG by FSU makes it 10-6 at the half.

9:27 – Nate Irving done for tonight per TV.

9:28 – Unfortunately, the expected NCSU offense shows up to start the second half.

9:34 – Nice play by the defense on the reverse.

9:36 – Didn’t see the helmet to helmet contact. Looked like a bad call to me. The officials back up that bad call with another one on the missed holding call.

9:38 – 13-10 FSU. The offense better come to play this series.

9:46 – OK, the defense has FSU backed up. Time for some big plays or this game is over.

9:55 – The defense finally held for the first time in a long time. Time to find the offense from the first quarter.

9:58 – Horrible special teams play. How in the world did that get into the endzone?

10:05 – FSU offense falls apart and their punt team matched State’s horrible coverage.

10:07 – Now that’s what I’m talking about. Nice play call. NCSU 17-13. Was that the slowest skill player on FSU trying to cover Spencer?

10:12 – 3rd and long and the WRs are left wide open. State isn’t going to beat many people with that kind of coverage.

10:16 – Defense is looking really tired. FSU 20-17

10:35 – Look at the time gap….if you missed the game, then draw your own conclusions. FSU’s offense stalls (pretty much on its own) and has to settle for a FG. FSU 23-17.

10:39 – 1st and 10 and that play looked like crap from the beginning. Incomplete pass was the best that State could hope for.

10:40 – NCSU now has more penalties than FSU.

10:41 – Bad time for a sack. The ball game comes down to this play on 4th down.

Who gives a flying F*K about Mac Brown right now?!!!

  2. EverettBeez 10/16/2008 at 9:28 PM #

That summed it up right there didn’t? We having their QB back deep, and he ends up gaining 8. The penalty is our only salvation there.

  3. EverettBeez 10/16/2008 at 9:31 PM #

ok, I’ll take that. now we get to control the “last” drive.

  4. redfred2 10/16/2008 at 9:33 PM #

Plenty of time, alright WOLFPACK, here’s your chance to steal one.

  5. redfred2 10/16/2008 at 9:37 PM #

    DAMNIT TO HELL!!!

  6. EverettBeez 10/16/2008 at 9:37 PM #

    ditto redfred

  7. redfred2 10/16/2008 at 9:40 PM #

Hey, now we find a way to stop them, what do you know.

  8. EverettBeez 10/16/2008 at 9:44 PM #

    no kidding.
We’ve got a chance here. A chance about the size of the avg penis at chapel hill, but its there.

  9. EverettBeez 10/16/2008 at 9:49 PM #

    ugh.

  10. McPete 10/16/2008 at 9:52 PM #

only one penalty for FSU in the 2nd half. right. this was bullshit. how many times did we rush in the 2nd half.

and how many people left early? it didn’t look like a sellout on tv.

  11. redfred2 10/16/2008 at 9:56 PM #

This frigging defense plays WAAAAY TOO DAMN SOFT!!! If they’re going to continue to play that soft from here on out, then they just need to give up the scores quicker and then get the hell out of the way.

    Bend, bend, bend, touchdown.

  12. Dogbreath 10/16/2008 at 9:57 PM #

I know there is a tremendous talent gap on defense, but I absolutely despise whatever scheme this archer guy is attempting to run.

I have seen no game to game improvement from our young linebackers and secondary. They still arm tackle, wander around cluelessly, play 10 yards off the LOS, don’t turn on the ball in coverage, etc.

  13. McPete 10/16/2008 at 10:03 PM #

i agree with dogbreath on the defensive scheme. why is that after damn near one year at nc state, dwayne maddox looks so lost? he enrolled early, went through spring practice, fall preseason, and now has started 3 games in a row. what the f*ck is the problem? why do our DB’s play 10 yards off every receiver on every team? is there any improvement in our secondary? the only improvement i saw in this game came from our d-line getting pressure against and o-line with a bunch of freshman and sophomores.

and wilson needs to know when he CANNOT take a sack. like with 4 minutes left on 3rd and medium.

Could we have stolen a game tonight? Yeah, maybe, but look at how many missed tackles we had… we were in the right scheme and guys were in the right position, but no play-making… WRs standing around not separating, and especially DBs and LBs missing tackles all over the place. It’s hard to win when you have a good scheme and the other team has more play-makers.

It’s going to be tough to get another win this year.

I was at the game . .. really enjoyed it and have great pics of the stadium lifting up NCSU and Wolfpack signs from the fans – it was a great photo moment.
Anyways – I really loved the first half. Our running game was awesome and I really felt like we were unstoppable. But then the penalties started flying. Everyone was booing and could see the miscalls. Then FSU started to get all the calls in their way – and they started to find our holes.
I was so hopeful in the end of the half – and a nervous wreck during the second half. I hate that feeling – and hated it even more that we started making dummy-o mistakes.
Damn that kicker for FSU for being so good. Damn – our defense can only do so much.
What is the deal with Irving?? Did someone say he is hurt again?
    Or not healed?

  16. turfpack 10/16/2008 at 10:35 PM #

Time of possesion-Fla.state-Reason – no depht on defense and offense
can’t maintain drives of any lenght.
Defensive depht is the major problem on this team.
We always play well early-then fade as the game progesses.
Just a thought from a old H.S. coach.

  17. Greywolf 10/16/2008 at 10:47 PM #

“followed by a ______ completion because of a 10 yard cushion from State’s secondary.” That’s the story of the game. And what’s with our obsession with the 3rd pass?

  18. BJD95 10/16/2008 at 10:59 PM #

I had a work thing, so my viewing was inconsistent. I saw the time of possession as the 3rd quarter started, and knew the game was over.

Sucking all the time really sucks, damn it.

We have a 50/50 shot of going 0-8 in ACC play. We lost our 2 most winnable home games (average or worse opponents, when we had the emotional edge).

And of course, Irving got hurt again. I’m just surprised he made it through the first quarter.

  19. Rick 10/17/2008 at 6:35 AM #

“I have never seen a team worse on 3rd and long. You can bet the farm that if we have a team pinned back on 3rd and 10+, their are 1:1 odds they will convert.”

That was the only thing that really made me mad. It was consistent. We would stop them on the first two and then give them the long play everytime.
    Infuriating

“This frigging defense plays WAAAAY TOO DAMN SOFT!!! If they’re going to continue to play that soft from here on out, then they just need to give up the scores quicker and then get the hell out of the way. ”

WHile I certainly agree with you, the one hard hit we had was called a helmet to helmet (CRAP) call.
The refs went from one extreme to the other after Bowden whined to the refs.

  21. jmnorris 10/17/2008 at 7:04 AM #

Ya me and my buddy were at the game and his friend texted him saying Bowden was all in the refs ear. The text said he was literally SCREAMING at them at the end of the half. I was right there for the shitty pass interference call and the ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT call for the helmet-to-helmet. I have no idea how the ref called that helmet-to-helmet and that penalty kept the TD drive going for FSU. Anyone watching it on TV see Morgan (I think that was him) almost intercept the pass in the south endzone? I was crying for an offensive pass interference call, but I’m curious what everyone else saw (I was on the student side of CF and he was across the field). It looked to me like the reciever hit him in his back before the ball got there.

  22. Oldwolf 10/17/2008 at 7:14 AM #

listening to the post-game show, Bowden said that asked the refs at the half, if his team was the only team holding. It did seem to have an afffect as the calls disapeared in the 2nd, even the blatant ones.

  23. BoKnowsNCS71 10/17/2008 at 7:33 AM #

Clean game. No turnovers. Officiating was a disaster. ACC has the worst in the NCAA — Was Ron Cherry there? FSU must have a 90% 3rd down success rate. If we can tighten up not giving the first down on 3rd and long — we might have a chance later on.

  24. redfred2 10/17/2008 at 11:51 AM #

About what I said last night about the defense, I swear I think that by giving and giving yardage in smaller chunks, and staying out on the field for so long, that we almost take away our own rhythym on the offensive side of the ball. I felt like most of FSU’s drives took so long that when our offensive squad finally took the field, that our O was almost asleep when they finally got back onto the field. Every drive felt like we had the ball for the first time and were still feeling our way.
