Bowden & Spence out at Clemson [8th Update, 12:00 pm]

Be sure to look below to read the updates to the story as they happen…

Tommy Bowden has been relieved of his duties as Clemson’s head football coach, effective immediately, Tigerillustrated.com has learned. Bowden told assistant coaches moments ago in a staff meeting.

We talked about this in detail on Friday in a comprehensive entry that includes a great list of potential candidates for replacement.

The more I think about this the more I see the same strategy that UNC-CH implemented in their firing of John Bunting almost two years ago — By firing Bunting as early as they did, Carolina enjoyed “first mover advantage” in the coaching market and therefore had the benefit of exploring options before other schools who ultimately lost their coaches at year end. It worked fantastically well for the Tarheels who most certainly would have not been able to hire Butch Davis later in the year when the Alabama job opened.

Like a quarterback with an infinite amount of time to sit in the pocket to check through progressions, Clemson will now have plenty of time to make private overtures to a host of candidates without having to work under any kind of pressure-filled time table.

Update #1: Assistant head coach Dabo Swinney will take over the team for the remainder of the team’s season.Update #2: Dabo Swinney didn’t waste any time making the program his own (for at least the rest of this season). Swinney fired offensive coordinater, Rob Spence today.

Just got it confirmed that interim head coach Dabo Swinney has fired offensive coordinator Rob Spence.

Athletic director Terry Don Phillips gave Swinney the option to retain Spence or let him go. Spence, who was in his fourth season with the Tigers, left the McFadden Building about a half-hour ago.

Update #3: This kind of stuff from Mike Tirico is typical media crap that pisses me off and I’m not even a Clemson fan. ‘Block C’ came back with a good retort.

Update #4: Sounds like Tommy Bowden elected to walk away with a $3.5 million buyout. Word out of Clemson is that Bowden had the option to stay and try to save his job with (1) a run at an ACC Championship game appearance and (2) some mandatory staff changes. His decision to walk took the administration a bit by surprise.

Clemson fans will give kudos to the administration for pulling the trigger early, but someone should be asking why Bowden received such a large extension and buyout at the end of last year when it was obvious that a legitmiate possibility existed for him to be fired this year — let alone for him to be fired at midseason.

Why didn’t the Clemson administration simply let Bowden go to Arkansas last year and save themselves millions of dollars and lots of public relations issues? Bowden cannot be that coveted at Clemson if they are willing to let him go after 6 games this year and a .500 record.

Bowden has a decade-long track record at Clemson – how can this 3-3 record be that much of a shock? Clemson is playing below their talent level, but that has been a hallmark of just about every Bowden season at Clemson. Which begs the question, with that kind of track record, why did the Clemson administration give him an unnecessary large extension and buyout last year?

Update #5: The general thought in Clemson is that Dabo Swinney is auditioning for the job and if the Tigers can turn around their season then Swinney could be hired permanently. Although I hear really good things about Swinney’s future as a head coach, I can’t help but think that general philosophy for a major Division One program is a mistake. Can you say Mike O’Cain? Carl Torbush? Bill Stewart?

Update #6: Pat Forde’s thoughts.

Update #7: Bobby Bowden discusses his son being fired

“Oh, he’ll handle it good,” Bobby Bowden said. “Tommy’s not like me. You know, I mean he was one of those guys that was thinking a couple of years down the road anyway [he’d get out of coaching].”

While he talked with reporters, the elder Bowden seemed at peace that his son no longer had to deal with questions about his job security, and the pressures that surrounded Tommy Bowden while Clemson went from pre-season favorite to mid-season disappointment.

Update #8: Coaching Change Already Affecting Clemson Recruiting

You may want to keep your eyes on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Recruiting Blog over the next few days — it looks like things are melting down a bit for Tiger recruiting:

Clemson lost two of its top 2009 commitments within hours of coach Tommy Bowden’s resignation on Monday, according to TigerIllustrated.com.

Defensive back Craig Loston of Aldine, Texas, who was ranked as country’s No. 21 overall prospect by Scout, told the website he is finished with Clemson and will likely decide between Texas, LSU, Oregon.

Safety DeVonte Holloman of Rock Hill, S.C., has also backed off his commitment to Clemson. He said he’s looking at South Carolina and LSU.

Parting Wolfpackshot — Clemson’s offensive line has been significantly impacted by injuries this year that has obviously thrown the Tigers offense out of sync. Could you imagine the voracity and volume of excuses that would be recited by the NC State Sunshine Squad – the folks who think that anything that happens at NC State is the right decision – in a similar situation? Oh wait…sure you can.

    Ouch! Check this out…

“It’s what he deserved. Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job.”

Later Monday, Harper expanded on his comments, explaining that Bowden “tried to motivate us but guys were off the bandwagon. There were things I disagreed with and that my teammates disagreed with. I didn’t appreciate it when he would say some off-the-wall things about me to the media. I guess one thing I can say is he gave me an opportunity to come to Clemson and play.”

“I’d call it karma,” he said. “I thought it needed to be done. I think anytime a head coach or someone in a leadership position starts to place blame on his coaches and players, it weakens their respect on the team. His past experiences have shown he’s done that.”

    — Clemson QB Cullen Harper

Personally, I think Cullen Harper needs to shut his yap, but pretty interesting comments for us to ponder none the less.

I’m good friends with one of the Clemson assistants, its never easy to see a friend worry about his job, his family having to move again and starting over. I attended the NCSU/Clemson football game as his guest, visited with the Clemson players, sit on the sidelines with the Clemson Coaching staff families. I am and was their to support my wolfpack but also there to support my “friend”. I guess its the nature of the business, but I was extremely saddened for the coaches family at the abuse and negative remarks aimed at them from so called Clemson fans, supporters and of course boosters who sit near and around us. I guess I looked at it different because I was seeing first hand how it effected those who are involved. At one point, I and another guy from the stands had to step in when a ‘know it all’ Clemson fan verbally confronted an assistant coaches wife as her 11 year old son sit there hearing the cussing and name calling of the Clemson staff. He said it was his right because he paid for LTR and season tickets. Not long a chant sprang up to “fire Bowden” along with boos. I really felt sorry for the Coaches families, I saw their hurt, some who chose to get up and leave before halftime. This was Clemson fans who were doing the bashing, no State fans.

After the game, I met “coach” as he came out of the media center. He was smiling on the outside from a win but hurting inside. I was amazed there was so much hostility in the stands while there was so much promise around them, new additions to the stadium, new offices and player areas like the Murphy Center in progress. I walked with coach and some of the players across the street to the Clemson Coaching offices to eat, along the way, it was a mixed bag of “good game”, “good job” and even “you deserve a raise coach”. Each time my friend would look at me and say “I just want to keep my job”. Whats the point here? It made me think back as I sat in the stands at CF, hearing the boos and negative comments aimed at Amato while all around there was buildings going up, tower being build…..how similar it was, only this time I saw it from a different perspective. I truely hope we as State fans do not boo one of our own any more Thursday nite.

Holloman decommitted today and has an official visit scheduled in Columbia this Saturday when South Carolina plays LSU.

Basspacker812, welcome to the “dark side” of Clempson football that totally turned me off. Their fans can be just absolutely awful and then they’ll play the innocent PC game with you.

Like you, I have a younger friend who is a BB assistant coach. I could curl your toenails with some of the things that he’s documented with one of the so called great ACC BBall coaches(not in North Carolina)

I think we should send Tammy one of those television monitors from up in Vaughn Towers since he loved them so much. It will be his parting gift.
I won’t shed any tears over his firing. To me, Klimpsun ranks right up there with UNC and “Merryland” and far as my hatred goes.

  7. wolfpackdawg 10/13/2008 at 7:32 PM #

Muschamp is an asswipe…I hope he gets the job for that reason.

I said it in another post…Rich Rod made Bowden at Tulane and early on at Clemp. It is quite obvious. I don’t particularly like him but I think Michigan will give him a few years to flail around his offense there to no avail.

Clemp can more than afford any buyout..& high $$ new coach.

How can anyone feel sorry for someone who is being paid 3 and a half mil not to work? Look at it this way- Clemson is in our division and we should hope they’re going to retain the rest of this sorry staff for next season and beyond. My hope is that for 2009 they’ll hire RichRod as their new OC and Mike O’Cain as their new HC.

Do the Tiggers need a new AD also?

I forgot to mention Larry Raper earlier. He was at our ECU game a few weeks ago. Maybe now with this situation he will reconsider his options…

&hit! Finale! I’m so tired of hearing the crap.
Just like you know who couple years back.
Don’t worry Tommyboy has 3.5M reasons to be fine.
He’ll be a coach in less than a year if he want’s it.

Clemson will get its wish of a big name coach, Clemson is a big job in a totally winnable ACC.

Right or wrong at least they hold their coach’s accountable

Recruits like Boyd & Shatley aside (two guys who actually seem interested in State), the loss of Bowden and the uncertain future their at CU won’t have any huge recruiting benefits.

CU was recruiting alot of **** and planning on sending them out on the field and letting them loose. For that reason I think BD and UNC were more in line with the bulk of CU recruits.

TOB is definetly taking his tried and true route, which I find funny is said by some as taking after Jim Grobe. TOB was doing it before or atleast at the same time as BC’s HC.

Tommy Bowden would actually be a really good choice at Syracuse.

I think the spread-option horse **** offense is a really good move if you’re consistently outmanned. If your players suck, the spread option is fine. If you have superior talent, it makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.

Michigan fans are *not* happy with Rodriguez. Not only are many of them ready to fire RR, they want to fire Bill Martin (one of the best ADs in the business…if he becomes available, snap him up IMMEDIATELY) since he: 1) Was not available to take a mythical phone call from Les Miles who was ready to immediately take the job and name John Tenuta as his DC; 2) Failed to land Greg Schiano, and 3) Hired RR and embarrassed the school with the ensuing contract disputes with 10,000 West Virginia hillbillies.

I don’t think this will actually happen, but if RR goes 4-8 next year, Michigan’s going to cut bait. They’ve got gobs and gobs of talent all over the place and to lose to Toledo…and in the fashion that they lost…they won’t accept it.

Likewise, Clemson fans have every reason to be pissed that their offense is sputtering the way it is. I don’t see it being Cullen Harper’s fault. Unless he’s the one calling audibles for trick plays every third snap/.

  15. Alpha Wolf 10/14/2008 at 9:43 AM #

Clemson’s real offensive problems stem from their OL recruiting classes from 2004-2006 largely being busts. They currently have a young line starting R-FR and Sophomores. It is hurting their running game and it is giving Cullen Harper precious little time in the pocket.

This year it may be impossible for any new OC to fix that.

    Sound familiar?

footnote: The description,in “Update #7” of “the sunshine crowd” is not only too kind, but horribly inaccurate.

They are rather akin to the Exxon Valdese Board Member cover-ups; Enron deviants; or the Bumbling Boondogglers of the current economy crisis. They are ostriches with convenient head-holes who, when emerging, put on PR peacock headresses to declare that because they engage in “cougar-hunt” and ‘hot tub’ activities with their administrative buddies–NC State is, therefore–obviously–in great hands.

  17. choppack1 10/14/2008 at 12:18 PM #

alpha – It’s true that they had a young OL. But watching that Wake game in the 4th quarter, I place much of the blame on their philosophy. They were constantly going from home run balls and totally abandoned the running game – after they started making some headway. Much like the FSU-Wake game, I thought it was there for the taking w/ some smart qb play and good game planning.

  18. class of 74 10/14/2008 at 12:41 PM #

Tommy Bowden, as others have said, will be fine and be a head coach next season if he wants. He did a lot of good things for Clemson and the program but the bottom line is you can’t go 10 years without an ACC banner at a place like Clemson.

Noah, answer me this, if the spread option is so lousy an offense and you should only use it when you are out-manned, then why does Urban Meyer use it at UF? Do they suck? Are they out-manned too? The fact is if you have speed and playmakers it is the best offense going. Michigan does not have the speed to run RR’s offense and do not seem to be buying into the system from what I’ve seen so far.

  19. highstick 10/14/2008 at 12:50 PM #

Phillip Rivers Wannabe, later word on Holloman today is that he visits South Carolina on Saturday and will commit to either South Carolina or LSU later.

  20. choppack1 10/14/2008 at 4:10 PM #

I have to agree that the problem isn’t the spread – it’s how they run it. Simply put, it can be a very difficult offense to defend.

Of course, I think the spread is most effective when you have a QB who can run – and clemson doesn’t have that. Heck, if you look in the Top 25 right now, you’ll probably see more teams who run or a variation of it, than any other set offense.

    ^basspacker, good post!!!

Everybody wanted to trash Amato because of his ego, his mouth, and on and on, but just like everything else, it IS NC State administration’s job (ha,ha) to keep those things in check. They knew what they had when they hired Chuck Amato, and they took what he had to offer, redirected his focus, particially anyway, and they used his persona to get everything they could out of it.

That’s why I was shaking my head when people on here were asking and wondering WHY Fowler, or anyone else at NCSU, would have any problem letting Amato go. It was all because they knew they had riden him hard for their own purposes, and they felt a sense of obligation for what Amato had done.

Maybe the game itself, suffered as all of the construction was taking place around Amato and his players, but NC State sure as hell did not.

  22. highstick 10/14/2008 at 6:12 PM #

Right on, Fred. Chuck was like that when he was a student. He wasn’t an unknown commodity as far as personality. They hired him for “that personality” and it backfired when he couldn’t produce after Phillip left.

Speaking of which, Phillip had a great game Sunday. Thank goodness, he’s doing good, cause my Panthers are inconsistent.
