Bowden & Spence out at Clemson [8th Update, 12:00 pm]

Be sure to look below to read the updates to the story as they happen…

Tommy Bowden has been relieved of his duties as Clemson’s head football coach, effective immediately, Tigerillustrated.com has learned. Bowden told assistant coaches moments ago in a staff meeting.

We talked about this in detail on Friday in a comprehensive entry that includes a great list of potential candidates for replacement.

The more I think about this the more I see the same strategy that UNC-CH implemented in their firing of John Bunting almost two years ago — By firing Bunting as early as they did, Carolina enjoyed “first mover advantage” in the coaching market and therefore had the benefit of exploring options before other schools who ultimately lost their coaches at year end. It worked fantastically well for the Tarheels who most certainly would have not been able to hire Butch Davis later in the year when the Alabama job opened.

Like a quarterback with an infinite amount of time to sit in the pocket to check through progressions, Clemson will now have plenty of time to make private overtures to a host of candidates without having to work under any kind of pressure-filled time table.

Tommy Bowden fired

WYFF (Greenville SC) Article

Update #1: Assistant head coach Dabo Swinney will take over the team for the remainder of the team’s season.Update #2: Dabo Swinney didn’t waste any time making the program his own (for at least the rest of this season). Swinney fired offensive coordinater, Rob Spence today.

Just got it confirmed that interim head coach Dabo Swinney has fired offensive coordinator Rob Spence.

Athletic director Terry Don Phillips gave Swinney the option to retain Spence or let him go. Spence, who was in his fourth season with the Tigers, left the McFadden Building about a half-hour ago.

Update #3: This kind of stuff from Mike Tirico is typical media crap that pisses me off and I’m not even a Clemson fan. ‘Block C’ came back with a good retort.

Update #4: Sounds like Tommy Bowden elected to walk away with a $3.5 million buyout. Word out of Clemson is that Bowden had the option to stay and try to save his job with (1) a run at an ACC Championship game appearance and (2) some mandatory staff changes. His decision to walk took the administration a bit by surprise.

Clemson fans will give kudos to the administration for pulling the trigger early, but someone should be asking why Bowden received such a large extension and buyout at the end of last year when it was obvious that a legitmiate possibility existed for him to be fired this year — let alone for him to be fired at midseason.

Why didn’t the Clemson administration simply let Bowden go to Arkansas last year and save themselves millions of dollars and lots of public relations issues? Bowden cannot be that coveted at Clemson if they are willing to let him go after 6 games this year and a .500 record.

Bowden has a decade-long track record at Clemson – how can this 3-3 record be that much of a shock? Clemson is playing below their talent level, but that has been a hallmark of just about every Bowden season at Clemson. Which begs the question, with that kind of track record, why did the Clemson administration give him an unnecessary large extension and buyout last year?

Update #5: The general thought in Clemson is that Dabo Swinney is auditioning for the job and if the Tigers can turn around their season then Swinney could be hired permanently. Although I hear really good things about Swinney’s future as a head coach, I can’t help but think that general philosophy for a major Division One program is a mistake. Can you say Mike O’Cain? Carl Torbush? Bill Stewart?

Update #6: Pat Forde’s thoughts.

Update #7: Bobby Bowden discusses his son being fired

“Oh, he’ll handle it good,” Bobby Bowden said. “Tommy’s not like me. You know, I mean he was one of those guys that was thinking a couple of years down the road anyway [he’d get out of coaching].”

While he talked with reporters, the elder Bowden seemed at peace that his son no longer had to deal with questions about his job security, and the pressures that surrounded Tommy Bowden while Clemson went from pre-season favorite to mid-season disappointment.

Update #8: Coaching Change Already Affecting Clemson Recruiting

You may want to keep your eyes on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Recruiting Blog over the next few days — it looks like things are melting down a bit for Tiger recruiting:

Clemson lost two of its top 2009 commitments within hours of coach Tommy Bowden’s resignation on Monday, according to TigerIllustrated.com.

Defensive back Craig Loston of Aldine, Texas, who was ranked as country’s No. 21 overall prospect by Scout, told the website he is finished with Clemson and will likely decide between Texas, LSU, Oregon.

Safety DeVonte Holloman of Rock Hill, S.C., has also backed off his commitment to Clemson. He said he’s looking at South Carolina and LSU.

Parting Wolfpackshot — Clemson’s offensive line has been significantly impacted by injuries this year that has obviously thrown the Tigers offense out of sync. Could you imagine the voracity and volume of excuses that would be recited by the NC State Sunshine Squad – the folks who think that anything that happens at NC State is the right decision – in a similar situation? Oh wait…sure you can.

^cooldrip, that’s awesome info. Sounds like a Mike Vrabel linebacker/tight end in the pro’s, linebacker/runningback in college guy. Who cares what he plays, at 6’3″, 260 and explosive he can pretty much play where he wants!
I’m betting it’s Johnson from Vandy. Half his coaching staff should have excellent NC/SC recruiting contacts with the number of former Wolfpack players and coaches he has. Plus, as pointed out above, he gets to move to a powerhouse football school who wants his type of offense and his biggest competition is Wake? Clemson should have NO problems getting him if they want him and if not their AD is gone.

I thought at the time that last year’s extension was really bizarre and now it just completely defies logic. If he was on ice this thin why not thank him for the memories, let him walk to Ark, and then hire a new coach without a buyout hanging over your head? The only thing I can figure is that they felt like they would win the ACC this year if everyone came back and if they added Bowers and they knew keeping him was the only chance of those things happening. Still a really strange move then that has proven to be dumb over time.

This does seem like a copycat of the Bunting firing with a couple of exceptions. First off, unc-ch kept ol’ Buntino around to finish up the season. This eliminated the chance of them getting Torbushed or Roof’d by having an asst coach on an interim basis, do well, and then let the players strongarm you into hiring them full-time. I think it’s safe to say that we should all be pulling really hard for Clemson the rest of the way and maybe they’ll hire this asst full time. It would be spectacularly dumb but after the extension last year it’s fair to say that their AD is a little squirrelly. The other big difference is that there is no obvious choice among the unemployed to try to bag at this point. Cowher may be the closest thing but I can’t see that happening. The genius of the unc-ch move was that they could move on the chief. If Clemson wants a coordinator or coach somewhere else then they’ll probably have to wait until the end of the regular season and the next several weeks will be total limbo.

Would it not just be too funny of ‘ol butch-slap wound up in AL anyway? But at Auburn? Thanks for the paychecks and national exposure holes!

  4. Tar Heel Fan 10/13/2008 at 1:36 PM #

Par Shooter raised the same question I have. It worked for UNC because they were able to pursue Davis before anyone else was out there since Davis was doing TV. Who can Clemson pursue right now? Of course if you hire Chuck Neinas he can talk to anyone’s agent and set the table I suppose.

  5. cooldrip 10/13/2008 at 1:38 PM #

^The best part Pack92 is that he’s a better person than football player, and he’s one helluva player! I remember in 2002, my parents and I met Phil Rivers at the bookstore. Everything he said was prefaced by “yes Maam” “yes Sir” and the like. Tyler is that kinda kid; he fits right in with TOB’s “Champions in the community, Champions in the classroom, Champions on the playing field” philosophy. Watching UNC this weekend, he nor his Dad would go for the swagger ‘showboat’ persona Carolina is displaying. Tyler is more the type to knock the hell outta you, then help you up, then get back to the huddle like he’s been there before, rather than dancing around. Pure Class, and it’s what I think we all want from our athletic teams. Sorry again for the hijack …

  6. FullMoonRising 10/13/2008 at 1:46 PM #

Their recruits are jumping ship and fast. Hopefully TOB is on the horn.

  7. choppack1 10/13/2008 at 1:48 PM #

You have to give Clemson credit – they pulled the string early. Better to try and get first in line. I do wonder if they look to the NFL for possibilities. UNC was able to get the jump on everyone else by going after the best known available candidate. Right now, the closest thing to that kind of candidate is Kiffin, the fired Raiders coach.

If you’re a Clemson fan, the timing of this kind of stunk. Last year, they could have made a run on Paul Johnson or even Rodriguez – both of whom would have been excellent fits. I wonder if they’ll look Minnesota’s way – Brewster has them sitting pretty right now…but he may be a year or two away from being ready to leave. Like our basketball job, they may have timed themselves out of the ideal candidates, but needed a change. Lots of good candidates out there, shold be interesting to see whom they hire.

  8. choppack1 10/13/2008 at 1:55 PM #

Going into this year – Bowden averaged 7.8 wins/4.8 loss per year…Lee, Obling and BOT – I know what you guys are thinking…”But he didn’t even have a chance to win w/ those great facilities!”

  9. Mike 10/13/2008 at 2:19 PM #

Almost 8 wins a year, WOW. I know someone else who averaged almost 8 wins a year, and he does not hold a grudge! The $4M buyout is no problem. 80,000 fans X $50 and one Staurday in a stadium pays him off. From what I understand, if you passed the hat in the stadium, people would have been happy to fill it.

  10. adchappe 10/13/2008 at 2:21 PM #

Lane Kiffin will be announced as head coach by the end of the week. Mark my words.

  11. highstick 10/13/2008 at 2:36 PM #

Seems like if they didn’t fire him, they’d have a major player revolt. Harper is quoted to have said “he got what he deserved”!

Raise that per head assessment cause all of those seats don’t go to the Clempson fans!

If Harper starts this week, watch Willy Korn jump ship!

  12. highstick 10/13/2008 at 2:38 PM #

Why would they want Skip? He’s proven absolutely zero except he knows how to lose! I hope they do pursue him cause he’s the same as “Boutdone”. Guess that has to be changed to “Totallydone” now.

  13. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 10/13/2008 at 2:42 PM #

^”I know someone else who averaged almost 8 wins a year, and he does not hold a grudge!”

Would this coach have a 49-37 overall record and 25-31 in the conference. Going 12-20 in the conference during his last four years. A coach that parlayed a great new stadium and the media attention one of the top QB’s in the country into a sub-mediocre team?

  14. wufpup76 10/13/2008 at 2:46 PM #

^highstick, you beat me to it … I wanted to bring up Harper’s quotes for discussion

Harper’s words may reek of sour grapes from someone who had just been benched, but I believe there is more to it as evedinced by Spiller’s comments … You can’t lose the respect of the team, and it looks as if Bowden had and part of it appears to be blaming the assitants and players for everything while absolving himself of guilt/blame

This really concerns me for one of our major revenue coaches who lost his team last season … I can’t think of a single press conference after a Wolfpack loss during Sidney Lowe’s tenure where he has taken blame or fallen on his sword for players … It’s ALWAYS been the players who shoulder the blame in those pressers … I don’t mean to get off topic too much, but I see the similarities and I hope this doesn’t continue in the upcoming season … This really bugs me

Ok – sorry for getting a bit off topic … please delete if necessary

Let’s give Fowler some credit here – can you what it would have been like giving Sendek a multi-million dollar buyout and fighting to keep him when ASU came calling? At least, Fowler and Sendek both apparently saw the writing on the wall.

Regarding the interim hire – I agree that this is in general, a terrible way to hire a HC. Clemson fans should pray that this coach loses enough games to NOT get the HC job. Don’t get me wrong, this could work out. I don’t know anything about the man. Can anyone on this blog think of a coach who suceeded long term after being given the job by “default”? The college football and college basketball landscape is littered w/ good position coaches who were “given” a job through internal promotion but failed to succeed: To the list of MOC, Torbush and Stewart – I’d add Bob Davis (wasn’t he Lou’s assistant?), Ron Zook, Larry Coker, Randy Shannon (though like Stewart we can’t call him a failure yet), Ray Goffe (sp?)…every school in the South has tried it – and I think it’s only been successful a couple of times…One of those times is Phil Fulmer.

  16. Scooter 10/13/2008 at 3:14 PM #

Given our own situation two years ago, I think we can all agree that when the head coach loses the locker room, the season can be chalked up as a failure unless drastic action is taken.

  17. Par Shooter 10/13/2008 at 3:15 PM #

Fowler made the obvious choice in letting HS walk. It’s pretty bad when a guy’s track record is so bad that a rare call of “give Fowler credit” derives from just not totally f’ing up a really obvious choice. But at least in that one instance he made a decision that the bonehead at Clemson couldn’t.

The idea of elevating an asst to head coach is very questionable when a program is winning and the coach leaves for greener pastures. The idea of doing it when the coach gets fired for losing is just totally nutty. The only examples I can think of right now are Roof and Shannon although that’s with about 30 sec of thought.

  18. Greywolf 10/13/2008 at 3:31 PM #

“I live in Burke County and I know Tyler and his family. He’s an impressive young man, both on the field and in the community. I know his Dad is very impressed by TOB (let’s say he was less than impressed by Butch). You hear he’s a fullback, but you’d have to SEE this kid. He’s really a feature back, a 6′3″ 260 lb feature back. I think ultimately he could end up at MLB, very explosive and has the leverage to hold up at the point of attack. Sorry for the hijack ”

Oh shit! I just soiled my pants.…

  19. highstick 10/13/2008 at 3:33 PM #

The word I heard was that Harper was really ticked the way Bowden handled announcing that he was being benched this week for Korn. When Bowden found out how he “messed up”, he was trying to call Harper and smooth things over. Harper basically just refused to answer his phone. By then, I think, Harper knew Bowden was “toast”!

I know a lot of you guys feel sympathy/empathy with Clempson because they are an ag/engineering land grant university just like us. I’ll agree that I felt the same way for a number of years, but finally got tired of hearing Danny Ford and National Champsionship knowing they cheated their way there. Sorry, I feel nothing but disdane for them because I think they’ve actually adopted the “Carolina Way” as a model. I’ll just shut up cause I really get mad evrytime I try to discuss it.

Except to say, I don’t see much difference in their failure to deal with Bowden than our failure to deal with Chuck except for when it had to be done, their AD was up to the task(although I’m sure under threat of mayhem if he didn’t),

Right about one thing, Chop, it ain’t one administrator or group, it’s all 3. I like the gentlemanly way. It ain’t the only way but it does have its attributes. Some of you guys would look like Tar Hole athletes grandstanding, talking trash as you ushered LF out. 😉 (Just kidding)

Let’s do for LF what we did for old what’s his name, find him a job and let him go graciously. We got an Associate AD who is a class act and a former player named David Horning. Horning was the guy who engineered Gabe coming back for his “night” at C-F. Healed a lot of wounds. It took some doing but well worth it. Then again, maybe he don’t know shit.

  21. RAWFS 10/13/2008 at 4:12 PM #

Well, one thing is for sure: Tommy Bowden is not recruiting against the NC States of the world.

  22. LRM 10/13/2008 at 4:18 PM #

I have no particular hate for Clemson, but I don’t have any love for them, either. Whether or not it was a good move, I have no opinion. That’s a family issue. But surely there was a plan in place when this offer to Bowden was extended, because it’s very possible that both Tennessee and Auburn will be searching for coaches soon, and they’ll both have the muscle to land their top guy.

However, I’m very interested to see how this unfolds over the next few days, because Clemson’s current situation is strikingly similar to ours for basketball in April ’07. The Clemson fan base clearly over-values the prominence of Clemson football nationally, so their next step should prove intriguing.

  23. PhilipRiversWannabe 10/13/2008 at 4:27 PM #

Does anyone know anything about any of their recruits? I know Holloman was looking at them and us and so was Shatley.

  24. Wolf Dog 10/13/2008 at 4:28 PM #

Clemson was having another strong recruiting year. I heard part of moving early was to try and salvage recruiting and give them a chance to still recruit. Steve Spurr. got a big smile on his face right now and they all over the phone. And don’t you know O’Cain smiling and feeling pretty good about being at VT after Tommy let him go.

I think Tenn. and/or Auburn will take a look at Butch although he might end up back at Miami. I don’t see him looking at Clemson unless like the previous post stated that he would use it to get a raise.

As far as Tommy Bowden, don’t be surprised if he don’t land on his feet somewhere real soon. Syracuse? Maryland? A Big 12 school? Lot of schools would be happy with 8 wins a year average.

  25. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 10/13/2008 at 4:47 PM #

Has any coach worked at more ACC schools than O’Cain? At last check I count four for MOC. I guess age would keep him from another move at this point but four schools isn’t a pretty good showing.
