State/Clemson Live Blogging

Pre-Game:

Some simple, painful truths – Clemson under Bowden always shits the bed when it has an opportunity to take the “next step” – but with it’s collective back against the wall, they almost always win, and win easily. Naturally, we get version 2 of the Tiggers today.

Even worse, the temperature will approach 90 degrees as the game wears on. That means dehydration, cramping, and more playing time for 2nd (and even 3rd) string players. Giant advantage – Clemson.

My goals for Clemson game, repeated from last night’s thread:

1) Don’t get Wilson hurt.

2) Don’t get Irving hurt.

3) Don’t get Andre Brown hurt.

4) Don’t get shut out.

Accomplish those tasks and I’ll be as happy as the proverbial pig in shit. Live blogging will commence now.

First Half:

12:02 – Holy shit! We have HD coverage! I predict this is the happiest I will be all afternoon.

12:11 – Is there really only one Nate Irving on the field? He’s everywhere. One play, and it’s 6-0 Pack. Extra point is blocked, so he still might be the only State player to score today.

12:19 – Clemson moving at will. Not good.

12:21 – State catches break, as Harper misses wide open WR for six on first down. But State gets no pressure on Harper on 3rd and 8. A lot has been said about Clemson’s inexperienced OL, but they are acquitting themselves well so far. 7-6, Clemson.

12:27 – The first drop of the afternoon belongs to Andre Brown. But Wilson scrambles for a first on 3rd and long. Thank God he got out of bounds.

12:30 – Run, Russell, run!!!

12:32 – Time to punt. When Clemson blitzes, we are fucked.

12:33 – Punt goes 17 yards. It’s ankle-grabbing time for the Pack.

12:37 – Wow, Tiggers go 3 and out. This would be good news, except the ball is downed around the 4. A safety may be forthcoming.

12:41 – Wilson gets helmet knocked off. Shit. At least he got up. Time out, State.

12:45 – Underwood really playing well.

12:47 – Wilson’s pocket awareness is light year’s ahead of Beck and especially Evans. Offense isn’t threatening, but it is picking up first downs and giving the defense a breather. I am very pleased with the effort and execution so far.

12:56 – We sure do love jumping offsides today.

1:00 – Holding Clemson to 3 here would be huge. If we do it, there’s still a good chance that we can keep the score respectable.

1:03 – Mission accomplished. 10-6, Tiggers.

1:09 – Nice edge rush from Clemson, State punts, Tigger ball on their own 40. Gut check time.

1:11 – Fucking offsides AGAIN, Clemson gains 30 on the free play. Lack of discipline may open the floodgates.

1:14 – Yep, floodgates open. 2 play TD drive, 17-6 Clemson. The ass kicking is in full swing.

1:19 – Pre-planned series for Beck?

1:21 – Pierson shanks again.

1:24 – Just like after the last shank, defense holds. Maybe we will get to the half only down 11. Wilson returns.

1:27 – One can’t overstate just how shitty our OL is. Clemson almost throws another pick.

1:32 – Finally, we get a hit on Harper.

Halftime:

Everything went about as well as could reasonably be expected. In the morning Gameday thread, I predicted 34-10. Clemson is halfway there, State is 60% there. We’re certainly not going to win, and may not be able to keep our finger in the dike much longer (i.e., semi-respectable score). But I am satisfied – this is certainly a team that can beat Boston College, and maybe challenge the jackhole Pirates next week.

Second Half:

1:58 – Graham tries to do too much on kick returns.

2:05 – Big spearing penalty keeps Pack drive alive. Maybe Tammy should focus his guys on playing football, instead of killing our QB. Just some friendly advice.

2:11 – Bite me, Josh. This will completely deflate us.

2:13 – Why the fuck didn’t we pick up that fumble and run with it?

2:17 – Clemson continues to head hunt. Fucking assholes.

2:19 – If you had Curtis Crouch in a “first knee injury” pool, congratulations! Can our OL get any shittier? We are about to find out.

2:22 – Great 4th down throw. Thank God no field goal try.

2:29 – Inexplicably, we kick a FG on 4th and 1 from the 4. 8 point game after 3 quarters, but State has clearly blown its chances to be in position to win. Damn it all to fuck and back.

2:34 – Nate joins the fuck-up parade, drops sure pick. Tiggers get 3 for a 20-9 lead. The only remaining suspense is whether Clemson can get a backdoor cover in garbage time.

2:41 – Wilson has made great decisions all game long. In the second half, he’s made some really great throws as well. That’s the positive to take into next week.

2:44 – INT, but a chance Wilson had to take. And it works like a great punt, spotted at the 4.

2:47 – It must be hotter than hell – the officials aren’t calling anything. Missed a clear false start on Clemson and a late hit on us (same play).

3:08 – Wow, the last play of the game was exciting for gamblers, wasn’t it? Pack holds on for the 1/2 point cover!

Final Score: Clemson 27, NC State 9.

Will we be favored in any games the rest of the year?

  2. ktoh 09/13/2008 at 2:04 PM #

A shock beck throws an int??

  3. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:05 PM #

great job harrison beck….thought we would at least win the turnover. he still has reckless abandon when he throws it…

  4. BAC79 09/13/2008 at 2:06 PM #

Too many penalties, poor kicking game, allowed too many big plays.

In spite of all that some improvement and a lot of areas to improve upon.

  5. EverettBeez 09/13/2008 at 2:06 PM #

Well – thank goodness we tackled that guy at the end!
Gary said it correctly, Clempson whipped the Pack. I guess we are all getting use to that huh?

  6. blackdom 09/13/2008 at 2:08 PM #

season shot and it is sept 13 ,wow thats quicker than last years b-ball season.

  7. buttPACKer 09/13/2008 at 2:12 PM #

    ’twas expected. . . could’ve been worse. . . I’m not feeling ashamed to wear my State gear. . . I guess that’s somethin’.

With patience TOB WILL make it happen. . . with PATIENCE.(he mumbles to himself in disquiet contemplation)

  8. BoKnowsNCS71 09/13/2008 at 2:16 PM #

I have no expectations for this year but for a surprise every now and then.

  9. b 09/13/2008 at 2:16 PM #

This sucks, but only if you expected a 8-4 football team. If we weren’t a mash unit on offense this was a tough game to pull out a win, with a ragtag o-line and no threat on the outside, they did well to play an even game in terms of time of possession.

The boys are scrapping, and an inexperienced team is improving. They will play better ball week to week, and should be able to go 4-8 with some breaks. Don’t let a a couple games against solid experienced defenses break your spirit. It’s a long season (longer for us no doubt) and a lot of things can happen. ECU and USF are tough games no doubt, but both teams are built differently than Clemson and USC, the Pack should be more competitive. Especiialy considering they have both games at home.

  10. stejen 09/13/2008 at 2:19 PM #

We moved the ball, we played pretty solid defense against one of the best teams in the country. We are making progress. Yeah, I know, this is the “I hate Lee Fowler so let’s do everything to blame it on him” blog. I am no fan of Lee Fowler but to me, when you see what TOB was up against today, he did a solid job. Too many stupid penalties for sure but something to build on.

man the season isnt shot. we probably wont go to a bowl, but still have an outside shot at it. unlike the b-ball team, we are imporving as time goes on.
nate irving is a pleasure to watch. tj grahm is too. think three years down the road when we have those guys, along with mike glennon under center, a decent O line and russel wilson mixing it up…..we arent in bad shape. go pack

  12. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:28 PM #

well i would disagree that clemson is one of the best teams in the nation. i would also bet that ecu and usf pose more of a threat than clemson. especially on O. yeah they have james davis and spiller. but they really arent worth the hype that they are given. that “best team in the nation” put 3 points on the board against a middle road SEC bama team.
i went to the ECU VT game, and ECU absolutely dominated VT in every phase of the game. i dont know what happened to them but they have gotten good. they also beet WVU who is a legit top 15 team. did you happen to see USF against KU lastnight? come on, these games are not going to be pretty for the pack…

  13. LRM 09/13/2008 at 2:30 PM #

We’re improving? Sorry, but which game did y’all watch?

We’ve put up a grand total of three points in our last three outings against bowl subdivision teams.

Look, I like O’Brien, but if Chuck got blamed for penalties, then O’Brien gets the credit, too. That was another piss-poor outing today across the board. It’s tiring.

    Go blue wave!

  15. Astral Rain 09/13/2008 at 2:38 PM #

I’m not too sad at the result, I expected worse. I also saw improvement from USC game.

I think 6 wins and Boise is still remotely possible, especially given how bad ACC is this year.

  16. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:39 PM #

which games have you been watching? going from three and outs every series, to actually moving the ball into the redzone in itself is improvement fumling snaps and giving it to the other team inside the 15 throwing red zone pics and pick sixes, how many of those happened today?….did you see any fumbled snaps? come on dude wake up, i`m sure everyone else here saw some good out of today, face it we are in the rebuilding phase, the only things that we should have changed today is going for it on 4th and short instead of trying to kick points….

  17. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:42 PM #

harrisons one pick, and two total picks are a automatic given, harrison has always thrown erant long balls, and wilson is a freshman and still getting used to football at this level so he throws the ball away a little too much, but guess what, a throw away isnt a PICK SIX like we have been doing….last year we were horrible in the turnover battle, guess whose D led the NCAA in interceptions going into this game. i sorry dude but are you really going to insult my intelligence like that LRM?

  18. Ismael 09/13/2008 at 2:42 PM #

like someone said, you should only be disappointed if we were ranked or something, or MAYBE didn’t know the names of orthopaedic surgeons family members.

there were really alot of positives to take away, and that’s all anyone should be interested in.

Russell Wilson is the best thing ive seen stand behind center in 5 years, and that is no exaggeration. As a matter of fact, if Glennon beats him out, we should move him to WR/RB. The guy is lightning-quick and can run and make people miss. He also made some throws today, that one in the second half down the middle to Andre Brown under pressure was beautiful. The INT i can live with, Clempson wasn’t expecting itand to be honest, Jarvis Williams had beaten his guy, was HELD, and was interfered with (pushed out of the way by the guy he beat; the guy did not turn around to look at the ball) on the interception.

The running backs (Brown and Underwood) played very well in all phases today. If i was seeing it right, we had a +10min in time of possession. This means the OL was doing something good.

I think the blocked Extra Point was more important psychologically than the INT for the touchdown.

I think what killed that one TD drive was the bad-snap inside the 10, but notice, we still got +2-3 yards out of it, DE would have just falled on it in the fetal position.

Clemson just has more horses than we do, no one should have expected this to be close really. The fact that they kept it at (just under) the spread was really something. We also shut clemson out in the 3rd Qtr. I will say that what’s frustrating is that we can all see that if we could correct some things this could actually be a really really good football team.

  19. Wulfpack 09/13/2008 at 2:43 PM #

“Look, I like O’Brien, but if Chuck got blamed for penalties, then O’Brien gets the credit, too.”

Here here. To me, that was the story of the game today. We had a chance, but hurt ourselves terribly. And I don’t know really what to say about the ‘We have a good chance against ECU/USF’ argument. To win a football game, you must score points, and so far our point scoring ability has been atrocious.

  20. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:50 PM #

well said ishmal, did we really only have the ball for just over 10 mins? if so thats not too great, that would be more than a 75%/25% advantage for clemson, i think we had it more than 20 mins, i saw that we ran 33 plays in the first half which is better than times past. we managel the ball reasonably well, and have something to build upon….

  21. LRM 09/13/2008 at 2:51 PM #

Moving the ball “well” only wins ballgames if you put it in the end zone, which we didn’t do, once again. We also gave up 428 yards today. So I’m having a hard time seeing the silver lining.

  22. Ismael 09/13/2008 at 2:52 PM #

Wulfpack – think about, even if we played a perfect game with penalties and turnovers, then we still don’t win this game against THIS opponent. It might be closer, but i don’t see us winning. Late in the game when the score was 17-9 (and it could easily have been 20-17 at best or 17-12 at worst [in our favor], that’s all you could hope for. Where the rubber really met the road was Clemson’s last drive in the 4th quarter. We could not stop that drive and WE HAD TO STOP THAT DRIVE. The only time in the whole game i got visibly upset was when it was 3rd and 7 or something like that, in the middle of the drive, and we got to kelly about 5 yds short, but he kept fighting, and was able to JUST get his big foot across the mark for the first down. That’s when i shutdown the comp in the cafe and came home.

  23. Ismael 09/13/2008 at 2:54 PM #

sorry inhoc…it was a +10 advantage for us in time of possession. the box score said we had it ~35-ish and they had it ~25ish, something like that.

  24. LRM 09/13/2008 at 2:56 PM #

As for time of possession, we had the ball 33:48 (55%), ran 68 plays to their 57, and managed 140 fewer yards and 19 fewer points.

  25. inhoc... 09/13/2008 at 2:59 PM #

    sorry, i misunderstood you ishmal….
well we kept the D off the field this game, they still folded in the 4th. thats unacceptable. hopefully that will be worked on this week, we are just so thin once our starters have to get off the field….
