State to battle Pirates without NINE injured starters (Updated for attrition 10am)

Tom O’Brien discussed injuries today in his press conference.

So, NC State will enter Saturday’s game without the services of our best tight end and his back-up; our starting running back and his back-up; our best defensive tackle; our best wide receiver; our most experienced wide receiver; our most experienced offensive linemen; and our two starting safeties.

For the record, the following is our current list of absentees:

Alan-Michael Cash, DT (starter)
Anthony Hill, TE (starter)
Matt Kushner, TE (#2 on depth chart)
Donald Bowens, WR (starter)
Clem Johnson, S (starter)
Javon Walker, S (starter)
Curtis Crouch, OG (co-starter)
Geron James, WR (co-starter)
Jamelle Eugene, RB (co-starter)
Toney Baker, RB (co-starter)

Give CTC and Les Robinson credit. We paid good money to bring in quality assistants in CTC early years. Holiday, chow, herring, green etc. We recruited good, the coaching was good, and we won. Our downfall began when we had a change of AD’s and when Holiday left. Chow wasn’t going to stay long, he was a west coast guy, him leaving had nothing to do with CTC. CTC was respected throughout the coaching community when he first came here, he had made lots of friends throughout the coaching community and used those to bring in some big names. CTC needed to build a program like Bowden had built at FSU where he could just manage some great asst. coaches. A foot at OSU, less fumbles by a certian RB, a couple more wins, and CTC’s ego not ballooning after year two, and that probably would have happened.

Very true, I stand corrected. Completely forgot about Trestman deal and I didn’t realize that he wasn’t the first one.

I don’t regret throwing it out there since it is bewildering to some that Amato wasn’t canned sooner. I was just throwing out a theory, an assumption I didn’t made up but instead heard in the stands and around campus more then a few times.

My gut tells me that Amato’s program fell off a ledge without heavy evidence that it was about to occur. What we are seeing is the now is the consequences of a meltdown few college programs not on probation have had to overcome

^^^^I think we’ve looked at this from every angle we can. We might as well laugh as we stare into the void.

On the brightside, I’ve still got four years of eligibilty left, I’m in decent shape, and I always wanted to play D-1A football….

Great post, Scooter. The last part definitely gave me a good laugh…

“Tommy Bowden told us you made a friend at Clemson after the handshake.”
    anyone know what thats about????

Supposedly, two idiot Clemson fans got in TOB’s face after the game…not sure what happened exactly.

Wow the injuries are piling up just like last year. All I’m going to say is we were not suppose to beat the Pirates last year and we did. I still hold out hope.

Vegas is giving ECU 7. I like our chances.

When we (NCSU, not SFN) were in our search for a new head coach, how many top-flight head coaches from BCS schools applied for the job or even asked to interview? That many, eh? It is safe to assume that is about how many top assistants are interested in coming here. Thankfully, TOB had loyal assistants who wanted to continue to coach with him.

NCSU can’t offer the salary it would take to create “an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down.” This is likely true for all our sports and the big 3 especially. I ask the same question about the AD when Fowler applied for the job AT the URGING of Les Robinson. When you play fantasy football, salary is no problem. The same is true here when we play fantasy AD or fantasy Chancellor or fantasy BOT member. “We should have fired (file in the blank) when it became obvious in hindsight that that bum was doomed to failure.” Really?

When I my first wife threw my sorry ass out, I forgot she was the same woman I fell in love with and just had to have when I married her, so I talked shit about her and derisively referred to her as “my ex.” Then I remembered she was the mother of my children and that’s how I refer to her now, the mother of my children. My attitude shifted 180 degrees. The same seems to be true about football coaches. We all love that Coach Amato was “coming home to NCSU.” HE will be loyal and stay with us forever. And those who extended that same loyalty to him are being mercilessly seconded guessed. BTW Coach Amato didn’t get a big ego after his second season here, whatever ego he had, he had it when we hired him. And he’s that same guy I loved and wanted when he hired.

We are witness to prime examples of the Intelligence Trap. Our opinions and constructs are so well put together that we absolutely believe them to be true — they make perfect sense. “Amato failed to plan for QB succession after Rivers, look how Davis and Stone did and tell me how you can argue with that evidence.” And so it goes with our “analyses” of the injury situation, the offensive line, recruiting, our school administration, our athletic administration (Oops, sorry. we are RIGHT about that one.), not to mention ESPN, the NCAA and even God.

Some of the crap i put out is near the top of the heap. So why do I keep reading the posts here? Some damn good stuff is posted and some well thought out assessments backed up with stats and other facts can be found amongst the usual sophomoric drivel while citing half-drunk, college students as the source of the “information.”

I’m a pessimist by nature and an optimist by design. On good days the design wins out over the thrown way of being. Today has not been a good day.

“Two years in a row with these types of lower extremity and “stress-related” injuries, with a stated emphasis on “flexibility,” with nary a mention of strength and conditioning.

All signs point to systemic problems with our offseason programs.”

You’d think so, but I remember last year the local media ran stories about how few BC players were injured under TOB. If there’s one problem here, I wonder if it’s how hard these guys are practicing. (Meaning, perhaps we’re going all out too much.)

I’m not going to try and find causation w/ all the injuries. To me, you give the coach a few years – and after a certain amount of time, you just look at results. The injuries/the bad calls/bad breaks – those should all come out in the wash over time. With Sendek (kind of like Tammy Bowden) – his teams never could win THE game or games – that would announce to the world – I’M THE RIGHT COACH FOR THE PROGRAM I’M AT RIGHT NOW. For Amato, the results were very similar – w/ the exception of when Amato got real close to the highwater mark, he retreated farther and farther away from it fairly rapidly.

    …………………………………………………

Bowden publicly apologized for that behavior but the quote above doesn’t make sense. Bowden endeared himself to O’Brian after the handshake, not the other way around. If you think about it, what would you really expect from one of the Bowden family. Bobby is truly a gentleman and Mrs. Bowden is a very gracious lady. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

This is what our young men should be exposed to when participating in athletics. Unfortunately, Coach Amato didn’t always provide the kind of example expected of a coach at NCSU. The News and Observer featured character training — actual training in sportsmanship beyond being a good example — that some high school football coaches are employing at their schools. I was impressed.

I admire that whatever happened on the field, Bowden was vague and TOB was evasive.

actually the question (“…made a friend…”) was asked by our beloved Ken Tysiac trying to be funny and get TOB to talk about what happened with the idiot fans and TOB said “i am not going to discuss anything that happened after the game.” To which the sound/mood of the press room went quiet.

Won’t be long before TOB is seen at some intramural games trying to spot some talent.

Injuries are a part of the game. Most seem to make it back at some point. Not so much for us. Has a single injured player made his way back to the line-up? That is what is absolutely crazy. There has to be a break in this at some point.

  14. PackerInRussia 09/16/2008 at 11:42 PM #

It seems like injuries are our game.
