Saturday Football Open Thread (Updated 1:45pm)

Naturally, when the Pack finally gets a coveted Saturday night home game…all the good TV matchups are late starts (Alabama at Georgia being the highlight). I suppose UNC/Miami is somewhat interesting, in that a loss would almost surely knock the Holes out of Coastal Division contention. And a loss really should be the end result – but keep your fingers crossed.

Duke is a full touchdown favorite against an ACC foe (Virginia) today. How long has it been since you could say that? The Cavs really, really suck. So, naturally, they are not on NC State’s schedule this year just as Duke has not been on the Wolfpack’s schedule the last four years.

The “Observers” had good ‘observations’ in today’s papers:

* ACC bounces back: The ACC is gaining momentum after a disastrous opening weekend. Wins against East Carolina, Mississippi State and Texas A&M helped the ACC’s stature climb while the Pac-10 plummeted. Entering this week, the ACC ranked fourth among BCS conferences behind the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 at realtimerpi.com.

* Refereeing stellar: We’re one-third of the way, and the ACC hasn’t had an officiating controversy yet. The refs usually only get mentioned when there’s a complaint. Let’s give them credit.

* ‘This ain’t intramurals, brother’: Colorado is 3-0 and coming off a big win against West Virginia under coach Dan Hawkins, who’s famous for his rant urging malcontents to play intramurals. The Buffaloes will be formidable for a Florida State team that looked awful on offense in a 12-3 loss to Wake Forest.

* Rivalries cooling?: Michael Jordan Nissan is advertising on Tom O’Brien’s N.C. State coach’s show. What’s happening to the rivalries? Next thing you know, the Tar Heel Radio Network will be running Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke Sports Medicine ads.

SFN always promotes that Wolfpack fans need to ‘get out there’ and experience other schools – as it relates to both athletics and general campus experiences – as often and as much as possible. In the following video about Georgia you get to hear about Vince Dooley boning some hot chick. You also learn that Georgia has 65 bars around campus. I don’t think all of Raleigh has 65 bars.

The ACC title will have to go through Miami very soon.

Well of course Virginia sucks this year and Duke is improved and favored; Virginia is off our schedule and Duke is on it…

I love having to suffer through Rascal Fags before every Raycom broadcast of ACC games this season. And I thought having Lil Mama’s “Shawty Get Loose” shoved down our throats throughout the ACC tournament was bad. N-Sync in cowboy boots. Ridiculous.

Watching Da U and Da U North and they just showed a guy drinking a draft beer in the stands. Has anybody been to a game at Da U? Do they sell beer at the games? Always been a great question as to whether it is an ACC, State of NC or NC State rule prohibiting alcohol other than the luxury suites. Frankly we have enough drunkards at football games without selling beer but it would be nice to be able to have a beer at basketball games if wanted.

Clemson continues to play down to the level of their opponents.

I’m watching UNC and Miami and I’m completely underwhelmed by both teams.

Back in the mid-80s, my dad had to spend some time in Milwaukee. One night, he wandered by County Stadium and asked if they had any tickets for the Brewers game that night. His seats were directly behind homeplate…since the opponent was Seattle. I asked him why he wanted to see that particular Clash of the Titans-battle and he shrugged and said, “It was baseball.”

That’s how I feel about this game. It’s football. Beyond that?

  6. Wulfpack 09/27/2008 at 1:16 PM #

Agreed. The U’s fan support is pathetic. If they are on the rise, as so many pundits insist, how are they not demolishing the rams? This is like watching a JV game. I am hopeful we can play a strong game tonight.

Memo to the two idiots who called our game last week…”Carolina” is not a f-ing state.

  8. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:32 PM #

24-14 Miami with about 10 to go. Carolina’s passing game continues to underwhelm me. Sexton is clearly better than Paulus (provided he doesn’t start throwing all the INTs he was famous for a couple of years ago). Carolina’s receivers are impressive, I’ll give them that. And they’ve got some nice pieces on defense.

Still, I think scoring points is going to be an uphill task all year.

Third and long and the “You” DB tries to go for the INT and gives up a 76-yard TD.

Three plays, 74 yards in :59 seconds.

Nicks ran a simple post and Miami had four DBs covering the wrong guy. Instead of just making the tackle, the moron tried to make the INT.

Exactly as stupid as you would expect Miami to play.

    Duke is up 17-3

  11. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:43 PM #

Goddard plays the third and 14 properly and picks the pass off with 6:21 to go. He returns it back to around midfield.

So, I’m going to go ahead and assume that Miami has crapped the bed completely and will let UNC score here.

  12. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:44 PM #

Clemson’s embrace of all things mediocre continues. They’re now losing 20-17 to maryland.

UNC is now in FG position.

  13. projWolfie 09/27/2008 at 1:45 PM #

Duke up 24-3. Could Al be fired tomorrow?

  14. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:46 PM #

Third and nine with five to go and Cameron Sexton takes the sack that puts them out of FG range.

These may be the two stupidest football teams in the country.

    Well…they’re going to try a 53-yarder.

  15. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:47 PM #

Wide left and short. Under four to play and Miami has excellent field position. Run the ball and if you have to punt, try to make UNC go a long way in not very much time.

  16. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:51 PM #

Carolina is going to use their TOs and try to make Miami go three-and-out.

Miami is helping them out with useless holding penalties.

  17. Wxwolf 09/27/2008 at 1:53 PM #

They used to sell beer at the Orange Bowl, and obviously still do so at Dolphins Stadium. I think they can get away with it since both sites are “off campus” and not owned by UM.

  18. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:55 PM #

Carolina uses their TOs and stops Miami. Carolina gets a piece of the punt and it rolls dead. They’ll take over at their own 40 with 2:49 to go.

  19. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 1:56 PM #

Dang you Miami!!! Play 60 minutes!!!

  20. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:57 PM #

Carolina is in the red-zone in only three plays. Miami insists on blitzing on every play and their secondary sucks donkey-balls.

  21. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:58 PM #

Miami gets a break. Nicks gets called for offensive face-mask.

    2:10 to go, clock rolling.

  22. Noah 09/27/2008 at 1:59 PM #

Carolina gets the first down somewhere around the 23.

    1:36 to go.

  23. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:00 PM #

Pass interference as the Miami defenders continues their stellar play by tackling the receivers before the ball gets thrown.

Miami is trying to blitz, but UNC is using a short passing game. Miami needs to stunt and then drop back. Sexton’s inexperience might result in a pick.

  24. packbackr04 09/27/2008 at 2:00 PM #

horse collar then pass ineterference. miami is pissing this game away

  25. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:01 PM #

Under 90 seconds, Carolina is at the Miami 12…so unless they fumble it, this is going to OT.
