Football Friday (Updated 3:20pm)

(The following entry was originally logged by BJD and then “piggybacked” with more from Jeff.)

* First, I don’t know squat about William & Mary. I assume this is a team that 99% of BCS opponents would beat easily, so we must have at least a 50/50 shot. Know something about the Tribe? Put it in the comments. UPDATE: Section Six has one of their great previews that provides some mathematical insight into the match-up (Thanks, Trip). Pack Pride has the good old SID released generic game notes. CFN seems pretty accurate with their prediction…except for the part about Jamelle Eugene playing as he is questionable and probably won’t be risked in a game with William & Mary.

The Wolfpack defense will build on its effort in Columbia, shutting down an average Tribe offense. Even with all of the returners, the William & Mary defense is sketchy and will be easily solved by backs Andre Brown and Jamelle Eugene, provided he can return from an ankle injury.

* The Hanna-related weather is taking a turn for the worse. Regardless, Sports Illustrated just ran an article saying that the game is not at risk to move (for now). Does bad footing help or hurt the Pack? On the plus side, anything that keeps us from throwing is good. However, that would seem to make it much easier for more injuries to occur. State will already be short-handed – no Jamelle Eugene or Anthony Hill, and maybe no Willie Young either.

* Thinking about staying home instead of braving the bog around C-F? Don’t bother – this might be the worst weekend television slate in college football history. The three national network games are Wake/Ole Miss (ABC national split), Oregon State/Penn State (ditto), and Notre Dame/San Diego State (NBC). Seriously. The “headline” ESPN night game is Miami/Florida (likely blowout), flanked by two complete stinkers on the duece (USF/UCF and Texas/UTEP). The Raycom game is actually the best matchup of the day, and that’s only because GT and BC come into the season as such complete unknows. But as long as the BCS system creates perverse incentives, you will only see more September slates like this in the future.

* Tysiac takes a break from kissing Wolfpack asses to note that…maybe South Carolina isn’t the runaway freight train that the Pack made them look like. Congrats to all the Former Sheridan assistants who led Vandy to its first home win over a ranked for since 1992. Side note – Tysiac might want to think about getting an adult haircut one of these days.

* Despite the outcome of last Thursday’s game, the trip to South Carolina was a blast for most Wolfpackers and re-emphasized that the game between NC State and South Carolina should be played with more regularity. State is currently scheduled to host USC to open next season on Thursday night, September 3rd in Raleigh. A few bullets sent to me by a friend:

* Boy, were you ever right about Evans. Wow….

* Williams-Brice is big…but boy it is a DUMP. The entire stadium is worse than our East side stands in terms of being fan-friendly. The seats are cramped and there is no air flow at all. CF is louder than that place, even with 60k versus 80k.

* I was shocked at how pleasurable and hospitable the fans were with whom I came in contact. It was a major change from their reputation and from our history with them. Maybe it was just that I was tailgating with a group of Gamecocks that insulated me from the rest of them.

* Unfortunately for Gamecock fans…their reputation was not helped by the lovely display of ‘class’ highlighted in this blog post and the links embedded. Similarly, I was surprised and disappointed to experience the classless reaction of a Gamecock fan sitting behind me at the time of Wilson’s injury.

* Surprisingly, I am actually interested in the Georgia Tech – Boston College game this weekend. Maybe I am not as interested in their head to head battle as I am to watch the direction of their programs in the next couple of years.

* Can you believe that Miami vs Florida means almost nothing on the national stage…yet it is still “the game of the week”.

When the teams haven’t met in almost four years and one of the participants is a diminished national power, what’s left? Louis Murphy, and that’s about it. The Florida receiver started flapping his gums last week after the Gators beat Hawaii.

“If I’m right, the ‘U’ stands for the University of Miami,” Murphy told the Palm Beach Post. “Well, we’re the University of Florida. We’re the ‘U.’ I don’t refer to them as the ‘U.’ I refer to them as Miami. If the ‘U’ is for university and winning and championships, we’re the ‘U.’ They are Miami, and that’s what I call them.”

* Sunday looks better, with the Panthers and Chargers as the highlight. It’s always good to have the NFL back.

* What would an NC State football entry be without some discussion of injuries?

I missed the spring game, but does anyone know if that new drainage and leveling off the field ever happened? I know TOB wanted the field flat with new drainage stuff.

  2. Trip 09/05/2008 at 12:27 PM #

Sectionsix has a good preview of W&M if you’d like to link that.

    SFN: Link added. Thanks.

The field renovation has not taken place. I think they mean to do it in this offseason. I know TOB wants it.

The N&O’s latest update says Hanna has moved west and will bring 3-5 inches of rain to the triangle, any idea what type of field condidtion we can expect?

I just noticed this “weather update” from the alert weather enthusiasts in our Athletic Dept. This on the heels of them having a “meeting” yesterday about it. Haven’t we had far worse tropical-storm-related weather numerous times in recent memory for home openers? Just off the top of my head — Ohio in 1998 and USC in 1999. I don’t recall being treated like I was 9 years old either of those times. Do we really need to be told to be careful with items “susceptable to strong winds”?

    Anyway here it is:

Weather Update, from the NC State athletics department: The eye of Tropical Storm Hanna is tracking more westerly than previous projections and is expected to make landfall over North Charleston, S.C. early Saturday morning. Due to stronger winds in the Raleigh area through lunchtime Saturday, NC State officials recommend extreme caution when considering arrival times to the area and the use of tailgating tents and other items susceptible to strong winds. The forecast from the National Hurricane Center is still projecting skies to clear in the Raleigh area for the 6 p.m. kickoff. Track the storm at the WRAL storm tracker site or get full weather updates at WRAL.com’s weather center.

I didn’t think USC was a great team. I think we could have easily beaten w/ some solid QB game management. We were getting that until midway through the 2nd quarter.

  7. Six Pack 09/05/2008 at 12:49 PM #

W&M has a very good passing game with a veteran QB. Their defense is awful against the run… well, really everything! With the storm tomorrow, I think State should be in a good position to run the ball a lot and W&M would be in an uncomfortable position having to run more.

I’m a football alum of one of their most bitter rivals in the CAA, I saw them play last year, so I have some cred.

  8. Girlfriend in a Coma 09/05/2008 at 12:50 PM #

RBCRowdy: If we get 3-5 inches of rain I would expect the field conditions to be wet.

Your name is oxymoronic by the way.

  9. Trip 09/05/2008 at 1:05 PM #

Is this on TV at all? I must hate myself to want to watch this on tv.

I think we’ll win, but it’s gonna be ugly. Especially with the rain.

  10. Dr. BadgerPack 09/05/2008 at 1:11 PM #

At least Gameday is here in Gainesville. Maybe I’ll get to have another quality conversation with Erin “Brainiac” Andrews.

  11. packbackr04 09/05/2008 at 1:31 PM #

why is Russel Wilson listed as questionable on the injury report? does TOB expect him to play? Maybe TOB has finally noticed how bad D. Evs is and realizes that we will never win another game with him as qb.

SFN: I don’t know…but, I was shocked – and pleased – to see him listed as questionable. This is a great sign. We aren’t going to beat Clemson…but, we need to beat ECU. We can’t beat ECU without Russell. So, being healthy and getting important experience at Clemson would be HUGE for us against ECU.

“I know TOB wanted the field flat with new drainage stuff.”

TOB also wants to know who that tall, slouching guy with the bushy mustache was at his interview for the State job. He thought it queer that the BOT and WPC members asked him to wait outside in the lobby until the meeting was over.

  13. StateFans 09/05/2008 at 2:01 PM #

I didn’t think that USC was a great team. I do think that they have a very good defense.

  14. Mike 09/05/2008 at 2:14 PM #

vtpackfan – I am usually pretty good at sarcastic humor and satire, but I am completely missing your point about the secret guy with the mustache.

  15. EverettBeez 09/05/2008 at 2:29 PM #

Mike, I figured it had to be Fowl-up. Though, because I am getting pumped for the Ole Miss – Wake game, I thought he was talking about Col. Reb to start with, lol.

the Decs & Rebs might not be a marquee game, but its a big one for the Rebs. By rights it should be a loss for us, but the game should tell us alot about a) exactly what H. Nutt’s accomplished with Ole Miss b) exactly how good Wake is. If Wake losses, there is zero hope for the ACC this year. Ole Miss is picked to finish 5th out of 6 in the SEC West. The wet conditions should help the Rebels. It could be a close one.

I don’t really get the Tysiac article. Were people saying that the Pack might be good because they were in the game for a half against SC? I think the same conclusions can be drawn whether SC is good or bad. The State defense played pretty well, but got worn out. The offense stunk with DE in there (not saying he’s 100% to blame). Andre Brown had some good runs and had some good space to run. 138 yards on offense is bad even if you’re playing the best defense in the country, so if anyone used SC’s supposedly good defense as a reason for optimism, then I think that’s a bit of a reach. SC losing to Vandy does not affect my view of last week’s game at all.

  17. Scooter 09/05/2008 at 2:55 PM #

It would be a stretch to say SC was “very good” on defense. Their passing defense was excellent when stacked up against our completely mundane passing game. It would be a strech to say we could run at will against them, but Andre Brown was able to hit them for more than 100 yards in a game where they had 10 to 11 men in the box each time out. Also, until our defense had been worn down, the SC passing attack was just as pathetic as ours (more yards, 4INTs). Spurrier may have better options at QB, but the gulf is not nearly as wide as last week’s score would have people believe.

Is it just me or does Week 2 feel like what Week 12 normally feels like for us?

Its a good thing I’m sitting through Hurricane #2 (Dennis being #1) this weekend. All of those games sound like snoozers until Sunday. Thank God for the NFL.

The most amazing thing to me about William & Mary is that their coach, Jimmy Laycock, is entering his 29th year as head coach.

Years ago, I believe he was once offered the Clemson job and may have even accepted it before withdrawing at the last minute. Does anybody else remember that?

  19. Ismael 09/05/2008 at 3:31 PM #

yeah i thought that Tysiac article was bogus too and told him about it, pretty sorry analysis too.

TV-Face time – the PACK will actually be on ACCSelect, being 700 miiles away at least i get to see it. single game only costs $5-6.

I like the gay-mustache comment, i immediately thought of Fowl-up. The guy should go back to the 70’s and star on Falcon Crest or Dallas or something like that. He’d be a great big-oil executive.

Related to football; unrelated to NC State:

ESPN did an analysis of teams that have scheduled the most cupcakes and those that have scheduled the least over the past 10 years (this year not included). Interesting that the SEC placed 5 teams in the top 10 of scheduling the most. The ACC placed 7 in the top 10 (although there was a 5-way tie for 9th place, thus technically making it a top 14) of those who schedule the least. Yes, I know that the counter will always be, “Look at how tough the SEC in-conference schedule is vs. the ACC’s”, but it’s still an interesting piece of information.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=formidable/080905

P.S. In no way was I suggesting in an earlier post that I thought SC had a great defense. I was simply pointing out that even IF they did, that would not be enough cause for optimism on offense, thus making the Tysiac piece puzzling.

Can someone kindly post a radio link for tomorrow’s game? The one I had for last year no longer works.

    Thanks.

  22. RabidWolf 09/05/2008 at 5:43 PM #

I agree with Scooter…SC being called good is definitely a stretch. They only went on a tear against us when our D was worn down, otherwise the ‘Pack held their offense all night long. 4 INT’s in the first half, relatively little rush offense. Had we had any sustained drives, we would be talking about a three or six point game rather than a blowout. (and if a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his ass every time he jumped) I may be one of the crazy ones actually looking forward to Saturday’s game, storm be damned. Should be sloppy with a lot of running plays….W&M may end up with negative rushing yards. Go ‘Pack!

  23. phillypacker 09/05/2008 at 5:45 PM #

txpack, the WIFM link no longer works.

  24. phillypacker 09/05/2008 at 5:46 PM #

I have asked a few times for links to free radio online but no one seems to know of anything. You may have to pay for packpass.

Wonder what type of grass TOB wants? Had that fake stuff at BC. I remember years ago when our Ag. dept had some hand in taking care of the field we had what I believe they called it Bermuda grass. Held up real well but when it turned brown didn’t look good on TV.
