WRAL: NC State and ECU play three times from 2010-16

Several gems in this article, so make sure to read the whole thing. The following is really interesting:

“We play them in ’10, ’13, and ’16, and we haven’t scheduled any further out than that,” said (Lee) Fowler. “We had more games over those six years and I think Skip (Holtz) and Terry (Holland) got together and said, ‘We’ve got to make sure we can win and do some things properly’, so I think they wanted to back off every other year or every year, home and away”

There are a few FACTS that you should know:

(1) Chuck Amato did NOT like the series with ECU and did NOT want to play the games. Early in Amato’s tenure, Fowler’s insistence of scheduling ECU was a source of contention between the two.

(2) Tom O’Brien also does NOT like playing the game with ECU.

Regardless of your personal perspective of the value/importance of scheduling football games with ECU, this stuff is damn good/funny. I don’t think Fowler is savy enough to understand what he is saying or doing; but those of us who have experienced this rivalry since the 1980s can’t help but love to see NC State turn the political tides on ECU and make a big deal out of this situation (as Fowler describes it).

We could talk about the reasons for this all day long…and surely have done so in old entries. But, I don’t have time to type it all today.

The late, great Jim Valvano terminated NC State’s scheduling of East Carolina after Pirate fans tore down goal posts and the playing surface at Carter-Finley in the ugly incident of 1987; AFTER NC State’s athletics administration had publicly warned ECU and Pirate fans after two consecutive years of minor vandalisms to the stadium.

Regardless of the obvious justification that it was no longer prudent for NC State to host East Carolina, ECU fans took the opportunity to turn the action into a publicity battle claiming that ‘NC State was scared to play ECU’. Those of you who have a long-term perspective built on actual personal experiences in the late 1980s and 1990s remember that ECU took this a step forward with a public campaign built around how the Pirates weren’t scared of anyone and would “Play anyone…anywhere…anytime.”

You need to look no further than East Carolina’s avoidance of scheduling a series with Appalachian State in recent years to see how their old mantra hasn’t held true for a long time. In addition to the excitement on the field, such a series would be a major boon to the economies of both Eastern and Western North Carolina. The Pirates’ decision to deprive the public of this fanastically compelling series with ASU – and the North Carolina State Legislature’s avoidance of the the topic – has been very disappointing. But, it is now consistent with Lee Fowler’s public statement that ECU is scared to play NC State on an annual basis.

Oh, the irony.

God I hope Fowler INTENDS to piss off the ECU people and knows what he is doing. If not, I wouldn’t be surprised for Terry Holland and Skip Holtz to publicly call his bluff on some of this.

“I think, truthfully, we expect to beat East Carolina on a year-in year-out basis,” Fowler told WRAL. “To us, it wouldn’t be that big an upset.”

Why are we having to deal with this? It a complete lose lose situation for us. If we win 4 out of every 5 games vs ECU the 5th game will be a bad loss for the program.

If playing NC schools is soooo important for ECU they should play Wake, UNC, Duke, and NCSU in a 4 year rotation.

So the 2009 schedule looks like this:

    2009
    at Wake Forest Winston-Salem, NC
    at Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA
    North Carolina Raleigh, NC
    Duke Raleigh, NC
    Clemson Raleigh, NC
    Maryland Raleigh, NC
    at Florida State Tallahassee, FL
at Boston College Chestnut Hill, MA
Sep 3 South Carolina Raleigh, NC
    Sep 19 Gardner-Webb Raleigh, NC
    Sep 26 Pittsburgh Raleigh, NC

Is there any speculation what the 12th game might be? I for one would like see a middle-of-the-road Big 10 (Minnesota,Illinois,Purdue etc.) or Big 12 (TT, Colorado, Iowa St., etc.) team be added.

According to Holland the 12th game is in Greenville vs. ezu. One wonders if Fowler has gone about working on a 12th game in the event that he was right and ezu wants out. Hmmm, doubt it.

Why are we attacking Lee Fowler on this? He has a letter from Terry Holland. Truth is and as I posted yesterday, I want to play them every year and drill them 7 out of 10 times. If Lee has the letter, then Terry is the “simpleton” and made a grave mistake among his fan base.

Resolving this dust up will be fun. Let me get in a cheap shot at this point in the wizzing contest. Maybe our very own dufus Fowler can hire Terry’s brother this time instead of Terry. Job would be to act as liaison between the two old friends “as they work it out.”

    Fowler is a retard.

Irrespective of the contract and when we do or don’t play ECU, Lee Fowler was speaking when he would have been better served by being quiet. He apparently feels his job is to get NC State media exposure at any cost. Unfortunately, the likelihood of him opening his mouth and it being a positive for the university is about the same as Evans hitting his receiver when he drops back, rolls left, then throws back against the grain (off his back foot too). Sorry to drag Evans into this, but it’s a accurate analogy.

Someone needs to monitor all of his statements and rate them (kind of like they do with political candidates). While it would be a painful reminder, maybe someone would wake and realize that he is consistently NOT helping the cause of NC Athletics, not the university in general.

It really boggles the mind. Lee might have some high ground here, but his casual, off-the-cuff (ie – unprofessional) style have put him in a pickle.

I’d get mad if I thought it would do any good. Fowler obviously has compromising photos of important people at NC State.

If Fowler was a cartoon, he’d be Sylvester the Cat.

Who cares about signed and legal contracts… Our AD has a vague email and ESPN.com!

    What a fool.

  11. thekind 09/25/2008 at 9:31 AM #

I am ready for the day when we have an AD at State that actually considers our own coaches when it comes to negotiating with other schools.
Fowler, TOB, Skippy and Holland= 3 against 1.

Can’t wait to hear what he says before the Carolina game to get them pumped up..

LF: “We expect to beat Carolina every year. Wolfpack in da house Boyeeeee (shows gang sign)”

  13. highstick 09/25/2008 at 9:57 AM #

Sounds like Jed should have consulted with Granny and Ellie Mae before making a dunce of himself.

Can’t those in power see what a dunce he is?

Few people define the term “No-talent Assclown” like Fowler.

I have no problem playing ECU every year and think it’s better than playing some tomato can. Do we need to play them every year? No. ECU fans love to deny how much better this game is for them than for State, regardless of outcome. But beating State would have pushed them closer to the top-10 and deeper into the BCS-buster media darling mythos. Let’s face it, we did the country a service on Saturday.

I do love the fact that we have scuttled ECU’s bigger aspirations two years in a row. You have NO IDEA how much that pleases me. Back to the Liberty Bowl (at best) for you!

“pps23 – what happened at the beginning of the game. One end zone was totally empty, as was the upper level section of the student section. When I was going to the stadium – I saw a huge line of students lined up.”

I sit in NEZ and saw the empty seats. At the half I walked down and talked to some students about what happened. Mostly they say there are not enough goons, sorry, Event Management types to handle the students and there were some snafus that caused delays.

In other words the students were disrespected and taken for granted.

At the main Entrance on the West side there were 4 to 6, mayber even 8, gates with 3 or more EM types at each gate. I like the way they search the women’s purses and let me walk in with a bottle of water in my pocket without a glance.

greywolf – not worry. I’m sure our athletic department will get it all straightened out.

  17. newt 09/25/2008 at 10:52 AM #

Whether Lee or Terry is right about the facts, the mistake was blabbing on the radio about what are obviously ongoing future scheduling negotiations.

Shut up, go back to your office, and do some work.

“Tis better to refrain and be assumed a fool….

than to open your mouth….. …and remove all doubt.”

    -Ben Franklin

    Congrats Fowler.

You have managed to shorten the news cycle for NCSU in what should have been a full week of glowing exposure for the Pack.
That exposure now replaced with Fowler bumblings and made worse, sharing the stage with the skill and repose of ECU’s Terry Holland.

Seriously, at what point do the 9-lives run out?

  19. WolftownVA81 09/25/2008 at 11:46 AM #

Lee put his good friend in a terrible position. Seems like Terry was trying to quietly re-negotiate the deal, for what ever reason, after all the hype created and political pressure brought to bear (according to some) that was needed to get this series originally scheduled. Not something he probably wanted to be made public. So the outcome of all this:
    1. ECU says screw it, we’re playing all the games originally scheduled.
    2. NCSU misses the chance to change/upgrade the schedule to fit our current needs/coach’s desires.
    3. Nobody in the NCAA will want to deal with Dickhead Fowler because they know he can’t keep his mouth shut and will blab all he knows about any potential deal even during negotiations.
    4. We are stuck with Jed because of his continued dumb ass comments (also see 3. above).

  20. MatSci94 09/25/2008 at 11:51 AM #

“One wonders if Fowler has gone about working on a 12th game…”

Wonder how much weight he will loose for this one?

  21. WolftownVA81 09/25/2008 at 11:51 AM #

Forgot to add, why couldn’t we have a Terry Holland? Say what you will about ECU, they got an A+ AD and we got Lee FAILURE.

  22. Rick 09/25/2008 at 12:52 PM #

“If Fowler was a cartoon, he’d be Sylvester the Cat.”

I would equate him more to the coyote (from the road runner).

  23. basspacker812 09/25/2008 at 1:35 PM #

The student situation pisses me off because my LTR seats are in the section beside the student section. Without fail, no fault of the students, they file in from one direction at kick off, blocking the aisles, everyones view to the field and line the railing. During the ECU game, the first half was almost over before they all got in. When they finally get in, they all begin the SOS process when the section over fills to go to the next available seating. Piss poor planning and treatment for all, specially us who have paid alot for seats.

  24. b 09/25/2008 at 3:54 PM #

You nailed it wolftown, Lee F screwed up a great chance to space out the ECU games and open a schedule slot.

If it were anyone else I would think Jed was trying to force the Pirates into keeping the original commitment. Since it is Jed, I’m going all in on he wanted to make ECU look scared to play us and expected his comments to have no bearing on the negotiations. At some point, someone has to get their head out of their ass and release him, because his head just seems to go farther in.

I wish I could sum up my thoughts on this but I cannot seem do it at the moment. Anyway, Fowler will say ANYTHING, to ANYONE, and especially with a large audience listening in, if he thinks what he says somehow makes ***(((>>> LEE FOWLER <<<)))*** look more important or in control.

Um Lee, you already have a job, and a damn good one at that. How about if for ONE F’N TIME you stop spending so much time running your mouth trying to convince other people that you are SOOOO important and worthy of the job title, and then actually go out and DO something for ONE F’N TIME that could possibly prove it to them.

Terry Holland did NOT say anything that makes ECU, or himself, look bad in this, so it doesn’t matter who said what to who, or when. Lee Fowler did though. If Fowler could only keep his mouth shut nobody would be discussing this right now anyway.
