WRAL: NC State and ECU play three times from 2010-16

Several gems in this article, so make sure to read the whole thing. The following is really interesting:

“We play them in ’10, ’13, and ’16, and we haven’t scheduled any further out than that,” said (Lee) Fowler. “We had more games over those six years and I think Skip (Holtz) and Terry (Holland) got together and said, ‘We’ve got to make sure we can win and do some things properly’, so I think they wanted to back off every other year or every year, home and away”

There are a few FACTS that you should know:

(1) Chuck Amato did NOT like the series with ECU and did NOT want to play the games. Early in Amato’s tenure, Fowler’s insistence of scheduling ECU was a source of contention between the two.

(2) Tom O’Brien also does NOT like playing the game with ECU.

Regardless of your personal perspective of the value/importance of scheduling football games with ECU, this stuff is damn good/funny. I don’t think Fowler is savy enough to understand what he is saying or doing; but those of us who have experienced this rivalry since the 1980s can’t help but love to see NC State turn the political tides on ECU and make a big deal out of this situation (as Fowler describes it).

We could talk about the reasons for this all day long…and surely have done so in old entries. But, I don’t have time to type it all today.

The late, great Jim Valvano terminated NC State’s scheduling of East Carolina after Pirate fans tore down goal posts and the playing surface at Carter-Finley in the ugly incident of 1987; AFTER NC State’s athletics administration had publicly warned ECU and Pirate fans after two consecutive years of minor vandalisms to the stadium.

Regardless of the obvious justification that it was no longer prudent for NC State to host East Carolina, ECU fans took the opportunity to turn the action into a publicity battle claiming that ‘NC State was scared to play ECU’. Those of you who have a long-term perspective built on actual personal experiences in the late 1980s and 1990s remember that ECU took this a step forward with a public campaign built around how the Pirates weren’t scared of anyone and would “Play anyone…anywhere…anytime.”

You need to look no further than East Carolina’s avoidance of scheduling a series with Appalachian State in recent years to see how their old mantra hasn’t held true for a long time. In addition to the excitement on the field, such a series would be a major boon to the economies of both Eastern and Western North Carolina. The Pirates’ decision to deprive the public of this fanastically compelling series with ASU – and the North Carolina State Legislature’s avoidance of the the topic – has been very disappointing. But, it is now consistent with Lee Fowler’s public statement that ECU is scared to play NC State on an annual basis.

Oh, the irony.

God I hope Fowler INTENDS to piss off the ECU people and knows what he is doing. If not, I wouldn’t be surprised for Terry Holland and Skip Holtz to publicly call his bluff on some of this.

“I think, truthfully, we expect to beat East Carolina on a year-in year-out basis,” Fowler told WRAL. “To us, it wouldn’t be that big an upset.”

Luckily I believe the students are going to get to vote on this matter, and I hope it fails dramatically, and SOMEONE notices what a goof Fowler is.

My biggest problem is Fowler’s arrogance in the article. I wish you guys would have seen the graphics on the article in the Technician. In HUGE letters “Fowler wants MORE $upport from $tudent fee$”… with huge arrows coming up from the M and R in more.

This is my comment from the Technician online, and how as a student I truly feel about this:

“I tell you what Lee- give me unlimited tailgating time, student entrances at EVERY gate, no unnecessary pat-downs, 3 wins against Carolina(regardless of sport) every year, and a beer hugger… THEN I will THINK about giving you more money! Until then, I just hope someone fires you soon.”

packpigskinfan23: I felt the same way about Fowler’s comments. Apparently Fowler only wants to compete with UNC when it helps him raise his revenues so that he can build new facilities.

pps23 – what happened at the beginning of the game. One end zone was totally empty, as was the upper level section of the student section. When I was going to the stadium – I saw a huge line of students lined up.

  4. Daily Update 09/24/2008 at 3:51 PM #

Also, how do we know that TOB doesn’t like this game?

SFN: Because we know. Take my word for it.

Choppack: Seats fill by the order of best to worst. The scanner situation is apparently so slow that the current entry system for students is always going to cause those seats to be empty at the beginning of the games. Maybe not the end zone normally, but the upper deck definitely. Someone over on Packpride, an alum totally sober, went and witnessed the debacle himself.

It has been the same story with the student sections since they started this whole ticketing system.

They have ONE gate for students the whole time, and a possible 2nd about 15mins before kick off. There are 2 scanners per gate… and then everyone has to be searched(sometimes excessively), hand stamped, and ticket stamped with your designated section. Also understand the the gates that students have to enter are some of the farthest from the student parking areas.

Why not spend some money on scanners for more gates? It does not have to be all of them at the time, but it does have to be more then ONE.

I got in line about 25mins before kickoff, and got in the stadium and was walking to my seat about the time that Beck threw the int for the TD.

I have witnessed the student entry debacle and I have to agree with “23”. Were I still a student I would pay ten more bucks a game if I thought I could get in on time to see the game they’re charging me for. Not to mention, as a defense attorney I’ve been privy to some absolute horror stories about over-zealous cops arresting people and tackling people who are alumni minding their own business. I can only imagine security coming through that one gate would make our forefathers sit up in their graves. It’s poor form to ask for something from a group you’ve basically shat on. if Fowler even announces a plan to fix the problems the kids would probably pony up. Hell they obviously come from good, blindly-supporting, no result-requiring parents.

I want you to get mad! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot – I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad.

Apparently Fowler wasn’t being clever, he was just off his meds and just plain inaccurate :^)). Was this even Fowler(?) or a story hacked into the WRAL site by a Wake Tech student? … Read the WRAL article now…….. has been edited with Terry Hollands comments. Putting those two together…. in the same room is like Pam Anderson and Rosie O’Donnell in a wet T-shirt contest. Say what you want about ECU. They are well managed.

  9. b 09/24/2008 at 6:36 PM #

Holland has already debunked this statement on WRAL. Jed is at it again, as for playing them I’ve no problem with it, but we have no reason to go to Greenville.

I was hoping some of the students who travelled there LY would tear down THEIR goalposts after the game. Sadly NCSU students insisted on being good sports.

When LF opens his mouth, the only good that can come from it is a good laugh at his idiotic uterances. Will this guy ever shut up. I live 30 minutes from Charlottesville and three hours from Blacksburg who’s respective schools get extensive media coverage and I don’t hear their AD making dumb ass statements. Give it a rest Fowler. You are a continual embarrassment to the Wolfpack Nation.

The absolute best thing we can do is keep on beating these assholes, and that will take care of most matters.

We’ve done ourselves no favors with this series. The Peach Bowl was the absolute worst thing that could have happened. Had we maintained that lead, I don’t think you would have seen the resurgence of the series like you have. Then we go down to Greenville and get stomped.

If we keep winning, they’ll shut up.

  12. Primewolf 09/24/2008 at 7:20 PM #

Lee isn’t smart enought to be crafty and try to embarass ECU. He is a simplye minded guy that goes from one thing to another without any thought or vision.

I got to spend some time with him and formed the above opinion based on first hand interaction.

  13. StateFans 09/24/2008 at 7:49 PM #

^ You ain’t the only one.

How funny is it that before I even read your comment I re-titled the next entry on the blog by calling Fowler a “simpleton”

  14. choppack1 09/24/2008 at 7:55 PM #

23 and Daily Update – that’s just absurd. It sounds like a huge cluster – of course, that’s what I’d expect from a LF production.

When I was school we actually got tickets w/ seats on them. If you had enough folks – and we did – you could even get block seating. Never saw anything like that. Absolutely pathetic. If Fowler and Oblinger were capable of being embarassed – they would be.

  15. tooyoungtoremember 09/24/2008 at 8:19 PM #

From Holland’s statement: “While leading to a longer term agreement to settle the issue of future games when the current coaches and athletics directors are not likely to be in their present positions.”

    Zing! One can only hope…

  16. crackdog 09/24/2008 at 8:28 PM #

    What a tool Fowler is.

  17. triadwolf 09/24/2008 at 8:34 PM #

There is some good to come out of this series afterall – maybe it will ultimately get LF fired. If Holland is correct this is a huge cluster f***. Is it possible we can get Holland calling for LF’s resignation?

  18. old13 09/24/2008 at 9:29 PM #

And we all thought it was Jed, while it’s really Jethro playing growup!

  19. redfred2 09/24/2008 at 9:31 PM #

Lee Fowler, of NC State University, spouts off with his typical nonsense, and then Terry Holland, of East Carolina University, comes back with a well measured and intelligent response that puts the university that Holland represents on much higher ground. Thanks Lee, what a surprise. Just more TOTALLY UNECESSARY utterances from the mouth of an over matched buffoon. If they continue to let that jackass shot off his mouth at will, then the folks at all other universities in the area will be looking down noses at NCSU, and rightfully so. Sorry Lee, but all the donations in the world can’t earn NC State that type of respect back, or make you look like a legitmate Athletic Director.

Well, if you want the game to be a rivalry games, the teams have to be good for it to be a rivalry. No one cares about the UNC-Duke football rivalry cause the two wins only win an average of three games a year combined between the two of them.

If Holland cares about the health of football in NC, he needs to get Fowler out of the way- and I don’t care how anymore.

  21. howlie 09/24/2008 at 10:46 PM #

Jed is a guy of high culture. He passes his vittles around on the ‘fancy eatin’ table’ with big sticks and serves NCSU hope on a rope.

  22. b 09/24/2008 at 11:01 PM #

Fowler has a signed letter from his “friend”. That trumps a legal contract, right?

  23. SuperStuff 09/25/2008 at 6:10 AM #

If they were going to reschedule as outlined in a letter they aren’t going to sign it now. Way to go Lee Foulup. Does anybody know how much this guy drinks. Loose lips sink ships comes to mind.

  24. Wulfpack 09/25/2008 at 6:19 AM #

“But… but… Terry Holland is my friend. How dare he make me look like a fool.”

Way to go Lee. You had one great day at the office.
