“Awesome Game Day experience. Great fans, campus stadium, college atmosphere and “scenery”.”

I’ve said the same on here many times in the past. NC State has great fans too, it’s just obvious there wasn’t/isn’t as much thought put into the “total college football experience” in Raleigh. It’s more of a get them in, and then get them out as quickly as possible approach. Going to any Clemson game, regardless of whom they are playing, is what a day of college football should be.

^^^ The advantage of being in a ‘college town’. Any place where the campus is more or less the city you are going to have a great game day because it is the story of the day. Clemson is unique because of the size of it all but Boone is no less fun on a fall Saturday afternoon.

Anyone keeping up with our recruiting the last 5 years knows we are paying a heavy price now for lack of OL recruits under CTC. One year under CTC seems like we only had 1 OL signee.

I also was at the game and echo everything that ChuckAllYall said about Clemson…and then some. I left the area after the game wondering why we don’t have a similar experience at CFS. Fact is, we don’t.

I don’t buy the college-town argument fully. Yes, it helps, but Clemson’s Athletic Complex is on the edge of its campus and is really an area all to itself. Littlejohn, the baseball field and their non-revenue gym are all together, and their golf facility is not far. On gamedays, it’s a town all to itself and campus is pretty quiet, relatively speaking.

The biggest difference between Death Valley and CFS is the way that the fans are treated. At NC State, there is suspicion of the fans and they are something the administration feels like they have to control. At Clemson, we didn’t get that feeling…and we tailgated in the lot adjacent to the west end of the stadium (opposite the end of the Hill.) The security folks were friendly, helpful and even gave disabled folks rides on golf carts up to the gate.

There was no five hour limit.

There was no blaring, loud music.

There was, however, a lot of camaraderie and good-times-for-all.

At the game, beforehand, they sang “God Bless America” then recited the Pledge of Allegiance, then sang the national anthem. Then their fight songs. Give me that over the multimedia craptacular that we have.

During the game, no crap talking. The Pick-6 to start the game was right in front of us, we were in Section H on Row DD — perfect downstairs seats to see the highlight of the Wolfpack day. The fans talked about Willie Korn, but said that our defense might be more than they expected. By the end of the game, they were saying that if our corners and safeties were as good as our front line they would have been in trouble.

Lots of booing on what they thought were bad calls.

Harper hard-counted our defense all day.

A couple of fans even booed their own team, specifically, Cullen Harper after he failed to move the team. Imagine that, booing a college player and wanting his backup to come in. I’m surprised that their fans are not being assassinated on Clemson-area sports talk today.

A Clemson fan beside us said to us, “I’m going to get a drink…can I get y’all one?” My wife had just finished a soda and she tried to give the lady money for a Diet Coke. “I’ve got money, don’t worry about it!” she told her. I thought that was very kind.

Their fans were not pleased when O’Brien called two timeouts at the end when we got the ball back after Clemson salted the game away. Me, I thought he was just practicing his two-minute drill or perhaps letting Bowden know that he didn’t appreciate the final touchdown (with ~1:30 left) when all Clemson needed to do was take knees to finish it. Still, no trash was talked to us…and we were in a sea of orange.

They shook hands as they left, said they hoped we enjoyed the game despite the loss and that they hoped they saw us in Raleigh next year.

I gave them my business cards and told them to come by our tailgates in 2009 and have some Eastern NC-style BBQ. I did josh them that I would bring mustard in case they felt like they needed it, and everyone got a laugh out of that, and it got me an offer for a cold beer.

It was one of the most enjoyable Wolfpack-whoopings I have ever been to, and had the temperature been ten degrees cooler it would have been an almost perfect day.

well, just saw the injury report…..
    crouch: out
    cash: out (knee surgery)
james: out (ankle) not that it really matters cuz we really dont have a pssing game but still…
    fucking spectacular…..
does anyone have any knowledge on the return of baker, eugene and hill????will they ever come back?

  6. b 09/15/2008 at 3:28 PM #

The fact Hill, Baker , and Eugene weren’t mentioned means they COULD be available and the staff is gonna wait and see. That they weren’t mentioned early like the certainties leads me to believe we should at least get them back over the next couple of weeks. Seems the team is due for some good luck for a change.

RAWFS, I’m too far away to attend Clemson games now, but a few years back I’d make it a point to go down there for at least one game a season, NC State or not. Whether it’s one hundred degrees in the shade, or 35 in direct sunlight, everyone down there should be very proud and thankful for what they have, it is ALWAYS a great experience.

I guess being appreciated is a two way street.

I suppose no bad decisions means it is ok to throw to the band when rushed out of the pocket and you can’t see open receivers. That’s one view and clearly a measure of good decision making in Dana’s and TOB’s book.

I still think Beck should play more. Forget about last year. What has he done this year. Well, win a game for one. Without him, we would be 0-3. Yes, he did take some chances and threw a telegraphed interception against WM. But we won because of him.

As I recall, he did OK against Clemson. The game changed immediately as he again made some good completions. He clearly can stand back there and see open receivers.

I do not think we can beat many teams with our run game, the read option and an occasional completed short pass. That very approach is why we will continue to struggle in the red zone.

Beck ought to play more, esp in the first half.

I am concerned that Russel cannot see that much downfield due to the size of linemen he is looking over. I think he has to find a throwing alley to have any success and that means he can’t see the whole field.

If we don’t start scoring some points, I will take more risk taking vs “good decisions” and 13 quarters without scoring a touchdown.

“Before we talk about the punter or anything else, we need to talk about scoring points and that starts with the passing game.”

Gee, I guess Bear Bryant, and a whole lot of other hall of fame coaches were all wet. Field position? What stinking field position? My QB can sling the seed a country mile. We can catch that sucker sometimes, too.

RAWFS, I get your point, but there is one other difference between Clemson and NCSU. Don’t forget we had a murder take place in our parking lots 4 years ago, and those lots have long been out of control. I’m not saying that I agree with the 5-hour rule, but let’s not pretend it isn’t in place for no reason.

“but let’s not pretend it isn’t in place for no reason.”

Could you re-phrase that, please? I’m having just a little problem sorting out the triple negatives. Doubles I can handle, but triples….

ChiefJoJo, maybe could help out with the reasoning behind treating the students like criminals. Wait, criminals have rights, the students don’t. Holding them in lines to be brought in after Kick-off sometimes. Screwing up in all kinds of ways and making the students pay for their errors.

What really ticks me off is the coming in late. How am I suppose to watch the game and check out the “scenery,” too. Can we take up a collection for those poor girls who can’t afford underwear?
