NCSU ends BS of ECU in BCS w/ W in OT

Pack wins in OT by a score of 30-24.

Joe Giglio of the N&O’s ACCNow did a masterful job of gradually adjusting his entries during the game to be the first with a comprehensive blog entry that can be seen here.

Andre Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run in overtime capped the Wolfpack’s comeback and charged life into a program in need of hope after a poor start to the season.

We echo Noah’s comments from below:

Fantastic win. Great game plan, great adjustments by the staff and great execution by the few players left. They kept us in it and kept us in it and in the end, we made fewer mistakes than they did.

No coaching staff is perfect, but today is a great example of the best of O’Brien and his crew. Manage the game, string it out and be in it at the end. It’s not always spectacular, but I will take it all day long.

* Tom O’Brien is now 2-0 vs ECU and Skip Holtz.

* NC State is now 16-10 all-time against East Carolina and has won 3 of the last 4 meetings between the two programs.

* TOB is a combined 3-0 vs ECU and UNC.

* We hope that Chancellor Oblinger and the Board of Trustees have forced Lee Fowler to exit the comfort of his air conditioned luxury suite and be among the masses of fans so that he will have to experience the kind of language and abusive behavior from pissed off ECU fans that the rest of the Wolfpack faithful is having to handle on the walk back to their cars. Since he is the one who wants to play this game so much he should be forced to experience it like the rest of us.

* Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson!

* We blogged about how well the offensive line played in the entries just before this one. But, we must take a moment to also personally mention the incredible play of George Bryan.

* Coach O’Brien is putting together quite a record of memories in big games at Carter-Finley against rival programs. Last year’s win over UNC-CH and this year’s against ECU are definitely two of the most exciting games played in Carter-Finley’s history.

More to come!!

Great win for the Pack today!!! Was at the game today. It was a great college football atmosphere at Carter Finley. As many have said, the more Wilson plays the more comfortable he looks. Great game for many players today. I did think Andre Brown had an excellent game on and off the field. Showed good senior leadership on the sidelines all day. Hopefully Nate Irving isn’t hurt too seriously.

    Go Pack!!!!

Wow BoKnows you stole my thunder.

As an aside, I didn’t have any problems with ECU fans today. There were FAR fewer of than than 2 years ago which was nice to see.

    Heel fans are melting down:

    “*up 17-3
*every worst case scenario imaginable on every drive from mid 3rd quarter on.
    *biggest game of the year…
*interception in the end zone at a most crucial moment…
    *absolute anguish.
    *20-17. again.
    Midnight madness in 4 weeks.

This is cut-and-paste of a very typical post from the other side of the Triangle. Of course, a lot of them are blaming the refs too. If I hadn’t seen that movie a few dozen times, I might be spewing beer in laughter.

Got to check out IC for the chuckles before bed time!!!

Wofford’s giving South Carolina a difficult time again!

RAWFS — good to see you back posting. Was worried about your AWOL. Need your level headedness.

This is Wolfpack nations fun night.Pack wins. ECU’s BCS hopes and ranking dreams dashed. UNX loses. FSU and Chuckster still losing to WF. TOB turning kids into what will be a monster team in 2-3 years.

I must have died and gone to heaven…..lol

Not to be a dick… OK, so kind of… “How’s that best program since 1974 doing?”… Refer about 4 threads back for my best program commentary…

YEAH STATE!!!! (I had half the bar in Gainesville pulling for us… I suppose ulterior motives were involved…)

    Thoughts:

    1) Russell Wilson is the MAN. I know we’ve had hope before (Evans in 2006, Beck in 2007), but I really think we’ve found our guy. He brings SO much to the table that we haven’t had in a long, long time. He’s poised, athletic, a great passer (I’ve been telling people that for a while now), and a true leader. His scrambling ability had ECU off kilter all day.

    2) I don’t want to hear any other local teams EVER bitch about youth or injuries (cough…carolina…cough). We beat ECU with our damn waterboy today.

    3) So glad to end the BCS bullshit coming from that cesspool in Greenville. Those folks had their heads so far up their asses…to hand it to them today is extremely satisfying.

    4) If we could get at least halfway healthy, we might could find a way to squeeze out 4 more wins and make a bowl. That would be great.

Unfortunately, I may have to take the little lady to the beach next week instead of going to the USf game. If you need tickets, let me know

  9. Daily Update 09/20/2008 at 8:48 PM #

Is that the best game from a QB since Philip Rivers wore the uniform?

If we have a QB, then everything changes. Big win, great overall team effort. Great atmosphere in the parking lots and inside. We just need to officially end the Harrison Beck experiment.

I was very happy that I didn’t see much Purple in the stands today. I was worried it would be worse. Looks like our fans stepped up again.

Wilson really helped the cause today. Now teams will have to actually come up with a defensive scheme the week they play us. No more just stacking the box with 9 guys and blitzing the shit out of us.

Great game and the O line was great, fantastic D and the entire team and staff came prepared. Good game Pirates and I hope you win the rest of your games this year.

Wow, is the Wake/FSU game brutally ugly. Florida State turnover, Swank missed FG – lather, rinse, repeat.

  14. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 9:18 PM #

Swank finally makes a bunny. 12-3, Deacs. Florida State is wretched again. Well, when they aren’t playing SoCon opponents.

  15. CStanley 09/20/2008 at 9:19 PM #

Wake has hit jackpot with FSU sucking ass the past few years. They may win the league again if they can manage to wizard a win against Clemson.

Why is Jim Grobe still in Winston Salem?

  16. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 9:23 PM #

7 turnovers for FSU tonight. I’m sure Noles fans are looking forward to the Jimbo Fisher era. His offense is unstoppable!

  17. RabidWolf 09/20/2008 at 9:24 PM #

    SEVEN……SEVEN???……SEVEN TURNOVERS FOR FSU!?!?!?!?

Is Weinke playing QB again? 🙂

MY HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN!

    Good one, BJD.

  18. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 9:25 PM #

Grobe is still there because Brad Wellman is still there.

  19. CStanley 09/20/2008 at 9:28 PM #

One of the best AD’s in the country, if not the best.

Regardless, Wake has 3 in a row over FSU (not as impressive these days as a it has been).

Does Bobby even coach anymore? I think Florida State made a mistake in naming Jimbo his successor so early. So far, he has shown me shit. Wake’s staff makes Florida State’s look like a circus.

Holtz likely did cost his team the game thinking with his emotions instead of Thinking through the possible scenarios. He should have had an assistant ready with all the possible risk/gain factors ready for him.

What’s to be gained by going for it on 4th down and scoring? (1) 10 point lead, a 2 score game. Plus NCSU knows exactly what it has to do, i.e., score pts on both possession. No punting

What’s the risk? (1) No points, (2) Big emotional lift for NCSU (did you feel it? I did.) (3) Possible let-down by ECU team, (4) Loss of possession and possibility of being down 3 with very little time left to get the 3 points back and OT if you do.

What’s the risk (negative) for ATTEMPTING a field goal and missing? (1) If you miss, no additional points but still up by 4, (2) Up by 7 if you make it with opponent needing 1 pt. PAT to tie, 2 pt PAT to win.

What’s to be gained by ATTEMPTING a field goal and making it? 7 points and a TD-to-tie-the-score game. (ECU up by 7) Here’s what worried me about ECU kicking the FG. ECU would have BALL POSSESSION and only needing a FG to win if NCSU scores TD on the ensuing possession. ECU could have had a good return just as we did. Two first downs and they would have been in field goal range.

Kick the field goal and if NCSU doesn’t score, on your next trip down inside the 5yd line, go for it. No blocked FG disaster to worry about and time burned off the clock. NCSU has 80 to 90 yds to go to win, (FG does not help) and little time to do it.

Yes, Holtz’s decision gave NCU a very real chance to pull this game out where a FG made would have put ECU in drivers seat no matter what we did.

Bowden just really hang it up after this year. If he’s just staying in to get the record for wins, he can forget it. Penn State’s program is light years better than FSU’s right now.

  22. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 9:34 PM #

Bobby Bowden is a more articulate version of Al Davis.

  23. hball57 09/20/2008 at 9:34 PM #

This showed the reason I watch college football… teams can improve from game to game over the season. And I’m sure we will see Beck more this year, because Mike Glennon needs to know that he and Russel will both play next year.

  24. BJD95 09/20/2008 at 9:36 PM #

LSU/Auburn is a really good game.

  25. CStanley 09/20/2008 at 9:42 PM #

How great would it be to be sitting in Auburn’s stadium right now? That place is e-lec-tric.

On a side, note…this topic was locked on PP…but did anyone else catch Tony Haynes F-up on the radio today? He slipped up and called Pinkney “Patrick Penis”. I literally ran off the road. You could tell Haynes was mortified…he could barely collect his remaining thought and finish up whatever he was saying. I almost shat myself in hysteria.
