NCSU ends BS of ECU in BCS w/ W in OT

Pack wins in OT by a score of 30-24.

Joe Giglio of the N&O’s ACCNow did a masterful job of gradually adjusting his entries during the game to be the first with a comprehensive blog entry that can be seen here.

Andre Brown’s 10-yard touchdown run in overtime capped the Wolfpack’s comeback and charged life into a program in need of hope after a poor start to the season.

We echo Noah’s comments from below:

Fantastic win. Great game plan, great adjustments by the staff and great execution by the few players left. They kept us in it and kept us in it and in the end, we made fewer mistakes than they did.

No coaching staff is perfect, but today is a great example of the best of O’Brien and his crew. Manage the game, string it out and be in it at the end. It’s not always spectacular, but I will take it all day long.

* Tom O’Brien is now 2-0 vs ECU and Skip Holtz.

* NC State is now 16-10 all-time against East Carolina and has won 3 of the last 4 meetings between the two programs.

* TOB is a combined 3-0 vs ECU and UNC.

* We hope that Chancellor Oblinger and the Board of Trustees have forced Lee Fowler to exit the comfort of his air conditioned luxury suite and be among the masses of fans so that he will have to experience the kind of language and abusive behavior from pissed off ECU fans that the rest of the Wolfpack faithful is having to handle on the walk back to their cars. Since he is the one who wants to play this game so much he should be forced to experience it like the rest of us.

* Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson! Russell Wilson!

* We blogged about how well the offensive line played in the entries just before this one. But, we must take a moment to also personally mention the incredible play of George Bryan.

* Coach O’Brien is putting together quite a record of memories in big games at Carter-Finley against rival programs. Last year’s win over UNC-CH and this year’s against ECU are definitely two of the most exciting games played in Carter-Finley’s history.

More to come!!

Greywolf: maybe they can paint this one purple, as consolation

  2. DAMangum 09/20/2008 at 4:27 PM #

Hopefully all of you that said we will win one game will shut the hell up! Happy to have been there to see all of the purple frowns!

Good win by the Pack! Maybe the purple Barney’s Army will spring board us to more wins like it did last year. ECU could still win out the rest of it’s games this year if you look at their schedule in Conference USA.

Way to go Pack! Frankly, I’ve never be a Skippy fan so until he can prove differently, my assessment remains the same. Everybody outside of the folks watching the games live thought Lou was nuts for taking away the play calling responsibility from Skip at SC. Maybe Lou knew what he was doing!

Was that sack by McKean the only QB pressure of the day? I can’t remember another.

Oh man, are the wheels coming off in Chapel Hell?
Yates knocked out, still up 17-10, but they just gave the ball up.

How about directing all your good karma towards Oxford Miss starting at 7 pm eastern tonight. Help me will Ole Miss to a win over Vandy.

Very excited still, can’t wait to get out and start to celebrate.

For folks who aren’t getting it (its on ABC here, if not it should be on ESPN for you) – VTech has tied it up, 17-17 in the 4th

Carolina is kinda coming apart in this one.

Noah – the box score doesn’t list “hurry’s” or pressure. Seems Pinkney faced heavy pressure on that last drive – we chased him around in a circle once, and either the play before or after that we had him running.

‘Need to rewrite the headline. Let this sink in.

We just beat a TOP FIFTEEN team [whom the telecasters kept talking game-long of ECU’s “recipe” to a BCS bowl game–took their best shot–and we ‘handled’ them today with our second string leftovers–and our best [remaining] player out for much of the game.

I was impressed by R Wilson, I noticed him being more of a passer today. Maybe that was because of the line, idk. I remember a couple of times when he could have run and threw it. I loved what I saw on the field and in the stands today. Atmosphere was the best I remember since UNC last fall or FSU 2 years ago.

“Was that sack by McKean the only QB pressure of the day? I can’t remember another.”

McKeen’s was not the only one. One memorable one was when we chased him back about twenty yards in a series of near-sacks and he almost screwed the pooch with an out throw that DaAndre tore the receiver’s head off and was a near picksix. There were others which didn’t result in a sack because Pinky turned them into positive yardage with his scrambling ability, or he threw on the run and got completions. I seem to recall another sack but because the sacks were not the usual pocket collapse type, it is hard to remember.

And the “sleeping giant” slumbers on…..

there is the game, second biggest come back by a Beamer team, and Carolina looses their starting qb.
they keep saying this was a benchmark game for UNX, I guess they still got work to do.

SO much for the miracle at ezu the media has been whipping up. Even Tim Brando, in the TN-Fl game had to say how bad the call was to go for it on 4th down as a field goal would have “put the game out of reach”? Piss on you Tim and your other buddies who thought ezu was just going to come in and clean our clocks. Overrated and overranked normally falls pretty hard – ask Kansas about the holes basketball team

The stats were a dead heat, huge difference time of possession gave the D a chance, that’s what won the game.

Heck of a game, fun to watch, fun to be there and see the purple and gold really go “aarrrgh”! Overall, the ECU fans in our area were no worse than some of the Miami fans. Big win, good to hear Carter Finley rocking, it was loud ! Go Pack !

NC State comes out of no where to set the supposed “up and comers” and in-state rivals straight, the powder blue, the sports media’s darlings, and the perennial “team on the verge” loses once AGAIN. Overall, this was a very good day.

I’d like to give a shout out to Graham on those kick returns. That helped us as much as anything.

I’ve been out to a company function, had more than enough to drink, but I’ll say it once again, while TOB and the football team won in a great game today, the biggest winners were Oblinger and Fowler. I’d say that the timely, or untimely, depending on your perspective, win today, was potentially more damaging than anything written in Tudor’s article. This win only settled the dust that Tudor finally decided was worth stirring up.

Russell Wilson had his coming out party today and THINGS ARE LOOKING UP!!!!

I don’t fault Skip for not kicking the 3 (although I thought it was a coaching no brainer to do it). However, had they made that kick, they would not have had the field position which allowed the 3 pointer right after that. You can second guess coaching calls all day long. I’m just not sure it would have changed the outcome cause that second FG might have been a punt.

Line of the day “It’s National Talk like a wolf day.” (Yesterday was talk like a pirate day.)

I hate rubbing salt but… how’s that for the “best program” since 1974… Beatches… hehe.

  25. RegularExpression 09/20/2008 at 7:48 PM #

I wondered about ECU’s decision to go for it on 4th and 1, and I thought trying to run it up the middle was foolish, but I don’t think you can say that cost them the game. After all, we went 3 and out after that and punted from our 14. They then used the short field(which they wouldn’t have had if they had kicked the FG) to drive for a FG to put them up 24-17.

And I have to say, anyone who thinks the only emotion felt after winning this game was relief that we didn’t lose was not at the game.
