Great interview. I had forgotten about Sheridan turning down Auburn. Can you believe that our head coach turned down a once (and currently) proud SEC football school to remain our head coach? It’s such a shame that his health deteriorated to the point that he had to leave.

Great interview. Glad to hear Coach is doing well. Whenever his teams took the field, you just knew they were going to win. I think in a couple of years we will be saying the same thing about TOB. Have patience guys we are headed in the right direction. Don’t forget we got a gunslinger that can play next season.

    Agreed with the above posters.
Sheridan was a solid coach, substance over flash.

I regret that he was forced to leave b/c of health concerns, but I find the O’Brien’s tendencies similar to Sheridan and refreshing. Long term, I hope that O’Brien is as successful or more than Sheridan was at State. I believe that he will be.

why has no one started a http://www.dicksheridanforAD.com site?

Great interview. What a class guy he was and is. I believe (and it is my sincere hope) that TOB is cut from the same mold.
I feel sure Sheridan could not take the cut in pay to be our AD. And more importantly he is not the kind of person who could put up with the BS that he would have to out of the BOT and the Chancellor’s office. After all our AD is only a symptom of our disease – not the cause.

“why has no one started a http://www.dicksheridanforAD.com site?”

Sheridan’s health would preclude his consideration for the AD as it is now structured. He would also have to fire all the Associate ADs and does not have the relationships with ADs to fill those jobs with competent people.

There is an associate AD at State who IMNSHO would make an outstanding AD but we are not going to fire and hire that way.

I heard a long time ago (back when it was happening) that Dick Sheridan was having an affair with the cheerleading coach (and definite MILF!) Kathy Bucky, and that Dick was “forced” out behind the scenes. I heard this from someone that was “in the know” at the time.

  9. Noah 09/30/2008 at 8:12 AM #

I heard that rumor plenty of times too. (There were similar rumors about Buddy Green and I always wondered if people were getting their signals crossed.)

Sheridan DOES have diverticulitis and was on the mend for sometime. I don’t think you ever recover from that…it’s chronic and you just learn to manage it, yes?

A friend of mine had an operation that cured his diverticulitis. He says he feels better now than at any time in the last twenty years

A least part of Sheridan’s “health concern” was that he was sick of dealing with Todd Turner. Particularly after Sheridan went on his own and built the W-B addition. Turner was furious and told Dick that he would never get another dime for any improvements, and that Turner would not even provide for the W-B operating budget.

Soon thereafter, Sheridan’s health concerns arose.

I always thought it was his wife’s health….guess my memory is going bad on me. If he was in fact messing with Bucky, I’m sure his wife’s health may be a reason that was mentioned as a factor…that is, if he wanted to stay married. I thought I remember something about caring for his wife. Either way, he was a great coach.

Whatever happened, it is just typical of NC State’s luck over the years. We get a great basketball coach in Jim Valvano and he gets run out of town for losing control of his players. We get a great football coach in Sheridan, and then whatever it was that happened with him, happened. We had Todd Turner (Carolina blood) for an athletic director! Now we have an administration and an AD that seem to only care about how much money they can milk from us fans, and don’t seem to care one iota about our performance in the major sports. We finally get another great (potentially) football coach, who is bringing in some quality players, and half of them are injured!

I swear, I’m starting to believe my NCSU is cursed!

(More) I didn’t mean to suggest that the only bad luck regarding “V” was that we lost him as coach. Of course, it was tragic that he lost his battle with cancer. But had that not happened, we still would have lost him as coach. That’s all I meant by that.

  15. Pack92 09/30/2008 at 10:57 AM #

I heard Todd Turner was applying for a janitorial position at the dumb dome. How befitting the useless pus-bag.

Sheridan mentioned all of his connections to the Vandy program and they’ve recently broken into the top 25.

I love this quote from the linked Clemson Blog:

“Some will point out the bottom line and the buyout. They may bring up attendance and IPTAY records. But sometimes it has to be about more than the bottom line. I think it is time to make a statement about your core. Clemson should be about winning championships and not the bottom line.”

Hope our BOT is paying attention. We need to be about winning championships in all sports. The Wolfpack Nation is hungry for success.

On a separate but related topic of how athletics can enhance or tarnish a school’s image, yesterday at a new UVA dorm dedication, Kasteen (Head of UVA) took some questions from the reporters present. Want to guess what they asked about? Not about new dorms, or academics, it was about the sorry state of UVA football. Our guys better wake up and understand that athletics is about more than raking in the bucks. Fans and alumni want to see results. It’s time to turn up the heat on James O. and Lee F.

for all those who responded to the AD comment thanks, you are all correct.

I would love Sheridan to be our next AD!!!

With “next” meaning “starting this afternoon”!!!

Can you blame Sheridan for leaving after he witnessed what the school did to Coach V and V’s struggle with cancer. If Sheridan was healthy and he wanted to stay our football program would have been great. I always thought the choice to make O’Cain the head coach instead of Buddy Green was a mistake. I would be interested to know if Sheridan had any input on the next coach.

  21. wolfpack95 09/30/2008 at 11:10 PM #

Sheridan recommended that OCain succeed him.

  22. SuperStuff 10/01/2008 at 5:54 AM #

I knew O’Cain wasn’t head coach material when he hired a motivational speaker one year that was on the sidelines during games. Are you kiddng me. Head coaches are motivational speakers! O’Cain even knew he wasn’t one.

Dick Sheridan resigned rather suddenly. That led to speculation about why. That led to the ridiculous rumor about a cheerleader. Think logically. How often does the head coach at a university interact with the cheerleading squad?

Sheridan resigned because he has Crohn’s disease, which can flare up suddenly and be completely dehabilitating.

One can also speculate that the job under Turner wasn’t what it was under V.
