Complete Meltdown for USF (No Wilson, No Irving)

Here’s the link – I have very little to say except are you f-ing kidding me?

Wilson, who threw three touchdown passes against the Pirates, suffered an undisclosed injury in the second half of the game but continued to play. He was evaluated on Sunday and O’Brien made the decision then to hold him out of this week’s game, which is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

The coach also announced that starting sophomore linebacker Nate Irving, the team’s leading tackler, will also miss this weekend’s game with a lower leg injury. Irving suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over East Carolina. He attempted to return in the second half, but missed most of the rest of the game.

High ankle sprains can go on forever. I’ve sprained my ankle a hundred times and was back to normal in 10-14 days. High ankle sprains last forever.

Of course, I’m not an athlete and didn’t receive treatment…so there is that.

Nate was definitely wearing a big boot on his right foot today on campus..word is its a high ankle sprain (never good).

Right as I got to campus this morning i thought i saw RW with a sling holding his right arm..needless to say I was all ‘wtf’ and figured it wasn’t really him. With this news, I think it was (no confirmation of that, but the pieces seem to fit).

This shit is ridiculous. Hopefully HB will morph into a solid qb for the south florida game, followed by RW’s return against BC..when it really matters.

I’m actually thankful Irving didn’t hurt his knee, as far as RW hopefully it’s a bruise and nothing more serious. I’m sure the guys in the huddle knew about it and him toughing it out for a win is just extra motivation for those guys.

The bad news is that we have a lot of injuries.

The good news is that some of the younger players are getting experience because they are being forced into action and that those younger players are starting to step it up. In the long run, this will pay HUGE dividends when NC State is deep AND has good talent in the backup ranks.

The offensive line in particular is starting to improve and block well. We have Jamelle Eugene back and there’s a new Andre’ Brown wearing the #24 uniform this season. He has turned from an east-and-west home run hitter into a bruising north and south guy who can still break off huge runs. And just for variety, Curtis Underwood ain’t all that bad.

If those guys, the OL and the backs, if they have good games, we can beat almost any team we play. If our running game is solid and our pass blocking can keep a rush back for a few seconds, then Beck can make USF pay for packing the box.

Yes, I know that the OL is a work in progress. But the truth is that our OL is playing better than at any time since Philip River’s junior season.

Hang tough, it’s going to be a roller coaster year, but man, the signs are all pointing in the right direction.

Plus, we don’t have to listen to Pie Rat mouths for a while.

    Let’s see…at least three INT’s I predict.

Folks probably won’t like to hear this but the injuries will probably give coaches more then enough ammo to ramp up practice this week. Drop off’s after huge win’s are the norm, it’s not an old wives tale, so maybe the team as a whole can rally enough to make it a close one.

Last year I couldn’t believe it that folks hear were “yeah, RW, he’s the guy”. That’s a big reason I like coming to this site. I mention that because HB has always been fun to watch in person.

Last year he relied on a single read and stared it down. It cost us and him. He picked up some bad habits mainly because the OL was atrocious. This is his chance, against a ranked OOC team, to show the maturity and talent levels are converging.

On D, I hate losing NI. It’s sickening in fact. I do always look for a problem to each solution and I think we may find it in Mr Maddux. That was a crazy situation to be thrown in on Sat. and he took himself out of plays right away. He is a smart kid with loads of talent (Bama, Clemson, USC offers for starters). It might not come to him right away but he will end up holding the fort down by the time NI is ready. Count on it! Go Pack!

O’Brien on Beck (per wral.com). Hysterical, true, and inspiring all at once…

“We certainly don’t want to be in our fifth game of the year on our third different starting quarterback, but that’s where we are,” O’Brien said. “It’s his opportunity, we’re going to see what he’s made out of. He can certainly help this football team and this is his chance to do it. He’s going to have to get it done this week.”

So far, Beck has been a much safer bet in a backup role.

He started four games in 2007, throwing for 624 yards with no touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

“He can wing it around,” O’Brien said. “We just have to tell him that we’re wearing the red jerseys on Saturday night and we’ll be in good shape.”

  8. RAWFS 09/22/2008 at 3:21 PM #

If Maddux holds down the fort for Nate Irving, imagine what hell will break loose for the opposition when they are both playing well…together.

“He can wing it around,” O’Brien said. “We just have to tell him that we’re wearing the red jerseys on Saturday night and we’ll be in good shape.”

    Ouch…

  10. Astral Rain 09/22/2008 at 4:12 PM #

With Beck in, I went the offense to be nothing but runs and 40-yd passes. With Beck’s penchant for picks, at least if you throw it deep, a pick is like a punt.

  11. LKNpackfan 09/22/2008 at 4:17 PM #

Could it possibly be that TOB is throwing out a smokescreen? Consider this: By announcing today that RW is out, USF wastes 4 days studying and practicing Beck’s exploitations, then on Thursday afternoon when coachs have to disclose injuries, he lists RW as merely ‘questionable’, and on Saturday RW gets worked into the game.
I’m not suggesting that this is a complete farse, just that O’Brien is being especially cautious with RW’s shoulder tweak, while also holding his cards close to the vest….

  12. choppack1 09/22/2008 at 4:19 PM #

LKN – not likely. I don’t think that’s acceptable to intentionally mislead like that, but I’m not sure.

I hope that is the case!

Were any coaches hurt? They are responsible for the emerging OL. We started to trust RW, let’s trust our coaches. Or we can grab the rear view mirror and steer this mother. If our players and coaches played looking at the past, ECU would have been a big winner Saturday. It’s fine to have our fears but do we have to get it all over everybody else. Maddox is going to be a damn good football player. Let it start Saturday.

One of my all-time favorite sports quotes is when Jimmy V turned to Sam Esposito in a tense moment, I think it was in the NCAAs in ’83, and said, “Think a good thought.” I wonder what would happen if statefansnation would take a cue from Jimmy V and all of us “think a good thought.”

I heard on 99.9 that it is speculated to be his shoulder, but not specified which shoulder, that is injured.

  17. Paramarine 09/22/2008 at 4:39 PM #

To be a State fan is to know what it’s like to be Charlie Brown going to kick the football.

  18. TampaPack 09/22/2008 at 4:40 PM #

Look, as someone living here in Tampa, USF’s location, they can defeinately be beat. Don’t expect that just because of a high ranking, they will come in and dominate (see, ECU). They are ranked high based in part due to their past success and weak conference. They have been less than impressive the past couple of weeks versus UCF and Florida International. We can beat them if we play like last week.

^HB has to take TOB’s comment about the red jersey’s to hard and come out fired up to prove him wrong. I think yet another example of great coaching. Plenty more to come in the future I am sure.

The thing that scares the heebie-jeebies out of me is that Daniel Evans is #2 on the depth chart for this game. Good possibility he gets a few snaps.

I’d love to see him come in (if he does play some) and be the hero like he has in the past. But I just don’t see it happening.

  20. packpowerfan 09/22/2008 at 4:56 PM #

    bradley-

Here’s some good news. With the way the OL played against ECU, I believe that if Evans came into the game, he’d be effective enough to manage the game. I’m not saying he’d play Daniel Evans circa BC 2006, but he’d be able to keep us in it. If you look at him playing against USC, he was under pressure CONSTANTLY, not to mention the WRs are looking more confident now then they were in the previous 3 games. I think we’re still in good shape on offense.

Defensively, Nate is a huge loss…HOWEVER our D (MINUS N.I.) did the job against an offense that looks much better than USF’s. Again, I think if the coaching staff does their job, and the players execute like they can, we can pull a big W out of this. Still…this injury thing is starting to REALLY piss me off. REALLY. I would love a winning football season before I graduate. Or there is the option of 100 years of grad school…hmmmmm

Beck can win the game for us. I know the guy likes to toss INT, but he will throw it all day long.

If he can keep it away from the other team and our WR’s can make some damn catches, we have a chance to win this against our 2nd straight ranked team.

  22. Wolf Dog 09/22/2008 at 5:46 PM #

Frank Beamer after VT’s win over UNX said, “Our kids play hard!” I think that sums up what you can expect ultimately from your team. Win or Lose, I believe TOB will alwasy have our kids playing hard no matter who is wearing the red and white. That is what causes me to give, buy tickets, and support this coach. That is what I cheer for, a group of kids that play hard. We did that Saturday, I was impressed, and I expec to see the same this weekend. I think from here on out we might not win, but the other team will know they were in a scrap. And I don’t think we’ve witnessed that each and every week since Sheridan was coach.

  23. old13 09/22/2008 at 5:55 PM #

I’d think that RW must be thinking about abandoning FB to keep from being further injured so he can preserve his professional potential for baseball.

  24. BackdaPack87 09/22/2008 at 6:08 PM #

I walked right by RW leaving class today and he is in a sling. As soon as I seen that my heart sunk because he looked like the only thing he wanted to do was get back home so that people don’t see him. People were already asking him questions what had happened but I didn’t stay to listen. Tough break but this is the life of a pack fan I guess.
