“Next Year” – Fowler’s 9th – shaping up to be sadly similar to past

If you visit regularly visit SFN then you know how to search our archives to find any of our many articles on the current position of NC State’s poorly performing Athletics Department. But, if you need some quick help you can click here for just a sampling of some entries that might be of interest to you.

In that^ spirit – and as Lee Fowler enters his NINTH year of ‘leading’ NC State’s Athletics Department – the projected performance of the programs on which he has put his stamp for almost a decade seems to resemble the underwhelming performance of recent years.

WHEN will it get better? WHEN are you, as NC State supporters, allowed to ask such questions and deserve a legitimate response?

We all know the current situation of the major sports – the Wolfpack’s football program is projected last in the Atlantic Division (again) while the basketball program is projected to finish in the bottom three of the league after finishing last season in the basement of the standings.

But, did you know that NC State’s Men’s Soccer team – after compiling a 1-6-1 ACC record last year – has been chosen LAST (again) in the conference for the 2008 season? (Link)

I don’t know what is more perplexing – the lifetime contract that coach George Tarantini obviously has or the fact that GoPack.com’s preview of this year’s soccer team is titled, “Men’s Soccer Looks Forward to Memorable Season” and doesn’t reference the ACC’s preseason projections or last year’s results. Integrity and the pursuit of factual information at its best!

The 2008 season also has the possibilities of being an exciting one on the new pitch. After a two-year hiatus from the NCAA Tournament, the Wolfpack will return a strong core of offensive fire power this season, in addition to its starting goalkeeper and three defensive starters all back from last year’s squad. In his 23rd season, head coach George Tarantini will have a lot of new faces for this year’s squad, including a talented group transfers looking to step on the field from day one.

(We’d like to take this moment to thank GoPack.com for creating such a vibrant and great market for US and helping us create so much traffic and success)

The good news is that the soccer team is moving into their ALL IMPORTANT new facility (or ‘fuh-cility’ if you work at NC State)! Of course, I don’t understand how we haven’t been able to recently recruit better players to avoid being chosen last with the promise of this great new facility on the horizon; but, since Lee Fowler has told us that all we need is new facilities then of course we can all finally expect some success. Scratch that. We admittedly don’t aim for success at NC State; just ‘improvement’. Somebody will get back to you on the definition of improvement one day. Maybe.

How convenient that Fowler has been able to deflect accountability for the programs under his watch based on an excuse of ‘facilities’ for almost a decade? How sad is it that the (insert adjective here) who run NC State have allowed him to get away with it for so long?

Could you imagine telling you boss FOR TEN YEARS that your office, your computer and your car weren’t good enough for you to be expected to produce results? Perhaps you should take your bosses and co-workers out to dinner after some golf up at your lake house to insure your job security. It seems to work great at NC State.

In other sports, the Wolfpack’s women’s volleyball team has been chosen LAST in the ACC media’s preseason poll once again.

GoPack.com has also chosen to not report this. Amazing. I wonder if GoPack decides not to report our losses if we can lay claim to some National Championships? At least the folks at GoPack fit the NC State mindset perfectly – they all believe that if you just don’t talk about something then it must not be true or actually exist in reality.

Coming off a 3-29 season, who knows how “Coach Fowler” will find a way to point to “progress” – another one of his 100% subjective criterias that the NC State Administration allows him to self-define for his own job performance. Perhaps we just need to build a new facility for volleyball? I mean, playing in Reynolds Coliseum must be one of the worst facilities in the entire league. I bet every other school in league has a multi-million dollar palace dedicated soley to the women’s volleyball team. How can NC State be expected to compete while providing all the women’s programs their own 12,400 seat on-campus facility?

I don’t know about you guys…but, I can’t wait until the next, next year. I am sure that everything will just be fantastic in 2010 after Lee Fowler has had a full decade of ‘leading’ NC State Athletics. (Don’t you know that you can’ judge an AD by his first decade?)

Believe me no one thinks Fowler is as big an incompetent, redneck, embarrassing buffoon as I do.
But the truth is it is nearly football season and right now I just want to hear some pads pop.
He ain’t even on my radar. Lets forget about that jerk for a while. We are obviuosly stuck with him until death does us part anyway. Lets talk football!

Maybe we should try to create a college niche in that beach volleyball I’ve been watching on TV. Only need 2 good recruits every 4 years. But Fowler would mess that up as well….probably make the girls wear sweats or something.

The way I cope with NCSU athletics right now is just to pretend that LF doesn’t exist. It makes for a nice little fantasy world to live in.

Fuh-cilitys??? Are we talking about bathrooms at Carter-Finley-Fowler Stadium???

Can anyone tell me where I can get a “Fire Lee Fowler” t-shirt to wear to the football game in Columbia? We should show up in mass all year in the shirt!

Lee Fowler, for all his flaws, can cook a damned good well-done cube steak.

  5. wolfpackbball 08/14/2008 at 6:32 PM #

I’m sure Lee can get us a couple of cougars to compete in beach volleyball.

Lee Fowler has had some success…he has successfully gotten me to stop caring about arbitrary competitions involving balls, fields, and courts. It has certainly improved my overall mood. Thanks Lee Fowler!

Is there a fire lee T shirt. Point me the way to it. They ought to fetch some real bucks.

    I agree with Whitefang.

I haven’t logged in to SFN for quite awhile. I got tired of nothing but Lee Fowler whining and when I objected(Open forum my a_ s!) I was told to go elsewhere by SFN to air my opinions.

So I figured that after 8 weeks that the summertime Fowler bashing was over and there would be good info and talk about football.

Obviously I am so wrong to assume that the start of the academic year and consequently a new college sports season would be current topics.

If this continues then keep the “SFN” but change the name to Slay Fowler Network. Your earlier competent reporting on W/L stats since LF arrived has become an obsession and subsequently your quality has plummeted.

    Adios.

“I really think that NC State athletics is teetering on a delicate edge right now. A few good b’ball and/or football seasons can get us off the edge, but w/out it – I think you’ll see Alumni giving take a huge hit in the upcoming years.”

Chop, I know at the start you said “I really think”, but you might want to re-think. NC State athletics aren’t teetering, they’re in the tank, and they have been for-F’N-ever. There is no need to fret about athletics, they can’t sink much further.

Now, if on the other hand you’re talking about the “teetering” being in the financial department, then any possible decrease will the best thing that could ever happen to NC State Athletics.

Listened to Terrence Holt before the Panthers game tonight on radio. He said “we(referring to NCSU) were only a short time away from making people forget about Tar Heels and Carolina Blue”!

    Sure hope he’s right!

redfred – I was talking about more when it comes to giving. I think the coffers may take a pretty big hit.

I don’t think Lee is a bad AD – I just don’t think he is a very good one either. At many schools of lesser stature Lee would be an excellent AD – but at NC State and competing in the ACC, I just don’t think he is up to the task. Put Lee at a struggling mid major, and I think he would do a good job, he is just out classed here. I don’t think he is a bad guy, just the John Bunting of ADs.

Football is almost here and slowly making strides after bottoming out. Hoops- I don’t know. Our best players may still be in high school. We have CC and wrestling on sound footing. Hopefully softball and baseball. With the lack of recent titles and/or poor performances in most other sports it is disheartening. LF’s days are numbered, but hopefully we will win some to take our minds off him.

“Rick – I sometimes think that Lee Fowler’s and Oblinger’s primary goal is to make NC State a great place to work. ”

The thing is good management can make it a great place to work and place expectations.

“Alot of my state friends don’t care anymore they have found other things to do that’s more fun–watch paint dry–Go to the dentist-”

I have gotten into the Hurricanes.

Fowler can restore his reputation in NC State by getting Sidney Lowe to go after some high school ballers that have an edge and something to prove. Sidney has the reputation to be able to get the Latrell Sprewell’s, the Ron Artest’s, the Marcus Camby’s, and even the Chris Washburn’s & Charles Schackleford’s. Throw in a little Bill Laimbeer for good measure. Add Deron Washington & Greg Paulus into that mold as well. Sindey has the urban cred necessary to pull these kind of players off and get them over here to NC State. That should be their primary goal right now.

Why do you say this in every post you make?
We got it that you think we need a Bill Laimbeer.
    How old are you?

Does anyone know how much pressure title IX puts on an athletic department? A few years ago Bucknell University decided to drop a highly successful and some would say storied wrestling program because they did not have the program balance demanded by the law. The decision was made based on the idea that it was cheaper to drop one male program instead of add one female program. If all we are looking to accomplish is to remain solvent and maintain the mandated balance of men and womens programs, then we are a very successful.

I understand that the creative source for this website has an anti-Fowler agenda. That’s your right. But I want to call our people on this site who used the non-revenue sports only to address their agenda against Fowler. Many would never think of attending a NC State non-revenue competition and supporting the athletes, yet you will not hesitate to throw them into your arguments against Fowler.

Want to affect change? Show up at events. Help recruiting by having an atmosphere for Softball, or soccer or volleyball. Try being part of the solution. Most of these events are free. I just wish more of our fan base would give a little time to support our athletes. Then complain to your hearts content.

It’s ironic to me that many people who post on this site would advise a young kid to sign ANY contract that’s stuck under their noses, regardless of whether they are ready to move up or not. What they are basically saying is that signing pro as quickly as possible, and getting the money, is more important than paying dues and honing skills to be really ready when they arrive on the next level.

Those same people though, will tell you that they are fed up with an AD, or a Chancellor maybe, the so-called “professional” people who get paid well to do a job that they aren’t any more prepared for, than the kids they just gave their blessings to, who signed to go pro way too early in their own sports careers.

I don’t know if that makes any sense to anyone, but I’d say it’s very much a double standard, in my mind anyway.
