New Wolf Statue at Carter-Finley, but no new restrooms for half the stadium

Wolf

Aesthetic improvements continue at Carter-Finley. As the picture below indicates (taken from this source), there is a new addition to the wolves’ den tunnel leading from the Murphy Center to Wayne Day Field.

I like it. I’m all for improvements like this that add some pizzaz to the place. I think I would like it more if the statue was set closer to the goal post thereby protruding a little further from the tunnel generating the appearance of the wolf running ahead of the pack. I’m not sure many people will be able to see it set back in the tunnel like that.

The real question continues to be why the east side concourse is yet to have gotten its renovation of upgraded restrooms and concession areas? It is unacceptable that everyone in the stadium has shelled out money for lifetime rights but only half of the stadium has been upgraded with new amenities. The good people on the east side who already brave the elements to sit in the sun deserve improved restrooms and amenities as much as anyone.

Of course, it is no surprise that the side of the stadium where the students sit is the side that has not yet been upgraded. Hell, the administration can’t even figure out a way to get the students into the stadium in time for the games, they surely could care less about providing them adequate facilities.

Related to this point, a poster on Pack Pride made an interesting observation when he/she asked about North Carolina’s building code regarding the minimum number of urinals/water closets for a 60,000 seat stadium?

packbackr04-if the wolf does drop a deuce than maybe they’ll finally break down and build more facilities.

It’s sad really and funny at the same time. I can’t help but laugh at that thing. MrPlywood-I definitely like that version much better.

I think we’re missing the real gaffe. It’s pointed in the wrong direction.

Looking at it, i think it is an original done by the same guy who did the six wolves out front of the Murphy center.

As far as the east side renovations, i sit there and hope that is eventually announced as a plan going forward. It wasn’t ever part of any of the campaigns to enhance the stadium the Pride Campaign (most of that went to the arena), Goal Line Drive (only murphy center, south endzone, practice fields, and jumbotron), Red Zone Campaign, and Vaughn Towers (that is being funded by about 400 people, but everyone on the west side got that benefit).

I am guessing they are awaiting doing something that can generate revenue or possibly part of an indoor practice facility (that would gobble up some parking) to enhance the concessions and restrooms on the east side. Although it was stated a few years ago, once they do a project like that, pass-outs are as good as gone.

Wrong freaking direction boys and girls, come on. Or are you just as lazy and or side tracked as I am?

After looking at the closer picture, it looks terrible. I like the idea but as usual, we fall short on aesthetics and put together a chop piece of work. The halfassed pinheads in the admin. fail once again. Will they ever learn to do something right the first time?

So what are the players to do? Rub the wolf’s head or something? Is this the upscale version of Frank Howard’s rock?

  8. RabidWolf 08/05/2008 at 8:57 PM #

Packer in Russia said “I like the cave look (maybe that’s old). Now, for home field advantage, they should put the visiting team in an actual cave instead of a locker room. With real wolves.”

Better yet, go old school. Back in the day, they used to cut off the AC or crank up the heat on hot days / nights in the visitors locker room. Or turn off the hot water. Or cut half the lights.

    Just win, baby. 🙂

I only assume the wolf statue is by the same guy that did all of them,so it is the real deal.

However, surely we would have built a quick styrofoam wolf of the same size and determined just the right height and forward position and size of the WOLF before we commisioined the bronze one.

The mini-me group of wolves last year was a joke. That decision maker needs to find a new job. However, he probably was given a pat on the back and told to get it right this time. Lee, where are you. I would be steaming with such outright incompetence all the way thru the org.

Hey, doesn’t this fit in well with the article in the n&O on how UNC is upgrading old east building with copper gutters and the works. I wonder if there is one copper gutter on NC State’s campus.

That’s a wolf? It looks like a tall hairy pig.

  11. redfred2 08/05/2008 at 9:31 PM #

Packgirl, it might look like a plain ole pig to you, but to the trained eye of someone knows how to appreciate fine and rare art forms, it’s more like swine.

The “don’t-mess-with-me-I-have-rabies” look is very nice.

“Is this the upscale version of Frank Howard’s rock?”

No Highstick, this is actually a bunch of fake rocks, with an arTIST’s version of a pigdog crouched down in the middle of them.

I don’t really see where the word “upscale” plays into any of that.

    Planning day, 9:00am July 15th, 2008

“Attention everyone!!! Let’s see now, what we want to capture here is the feeling of the players running out of the opening to a real Wolves’ den. So let’s all be as creative as possible and make this thing look three dimensional, so that it really jumps out and ga-rabs those crazy fans!!!

“Oh wait, almost forgot, be sure that all of the rocks are 35″ inches in height, and 57″ in width, no variance either way. Also, the minimum thickness of all rocks most be maintained at a constant 1″, and the maximum thickness is 1 1/2″. There are also two diferent colors of paint to choose from, mix and match and use them any way you wish.

So come on, let’s get out there and make this thing come alive PEOPLE!!!”

    Project completion date: 3:45pm July 15th, 2008

Seriously, who do you have to study under in order for that wolf to be considered valuable “art”?

  16. b 08/05/2008 at 11:08 PM #

Kind of looks like a goofy golf hole. I bet you the roll the ball up in his mouth, and it shoots out the other end towards the hole. That’s why it is depicted in a squat clinching.

Seriously, it is a little hinky, but its cool for the kids and if it adds a small layer of Disneyland-esque scenery for the family, even such an oddly-envisioned, Flintstone style rendering, I’m all for it.

Why there is not a greater uproar over the lack of renovated concessions and restrooms on the east side is beyond me.

I mention the need for these changes ad nauseum. Unfortunately, no one is apparently listening.

somebody is trying to give State an ungly face before leaving the post.

Next up on the project list is a 30 foot bronze statue of Jed Fowler at the entrance to Dail Plaza.

  20. vtpackfan 08/06/2008 at 6:45 AM #

I’m thinking it’s very BA looking. My wife and I will get a decent peek at it this season from our seats. I showed her the picture and she said it looked like a terd w/legs.

HA! It’s always good to have something else to talk about in the event we have any more Maryland type home games.

When a woman at Carter Finley has to go to the bathroom. She can be gone for half the game. When the woman is not much of a football fan, is that such a bad thing?

  22. BJD95 08/06/2008 at 7:12 AM #

It looks like someone’s dog that has been left out in the rain, who is presently growling at the mailman.

    Blech.

  23. JimValvano 08/06/2008 at 7:14 AM #

Sort of looks like the Mantauk Monster to me…maybe this is where they moved it after finding it on the beach.

It also looks a little like… … … a turd with toothpicks as legs.

Are those headstones in the background? Is that a new fund raiser Fowler’s come up with. You can be buried at Carter Finley for a $20,000 donation. Furthermore, we’ll bury you vertically so that you can still watch the game.

On another note…at least the East Siders get to enjoy cheerleaders actually cheering toward them. It makes me feel a little better knowing that my West Side has at least one advantage.

off the subject but a good article about archer and defense.bottom line was that last year the defense was not intelligent enough to remember called assignments and these are ‘college student’.hell forget academic standards and just recruit players and let their degree be a BS in sports.90 percent of players are not legit students.

  25. PackHooligan 08/06/2008 at 7:22 AM #

It is really stupid that the wolf is in a defensive position with his tail protecting his genitals (hopefully that isn’t how our team plays this year). The wolf should be in attack mode. I hate complaining about something like this, but I just think that if you are going to do something, you might as well do it right.
