GoPack.com proclaims graduated quarterback will help State at receiver in 2008

We didn’t cover the re-launch of the ‘upgraded’ GoPack.com this past week despite the obvious opportunities they provided us to criticize the website for the minimal coverage that they provided NC State alumnus, Cullen Jones, after Jones was a part of one of the most significant moments of this year’s Olympic games.

GoPack’s insignificant vanilla coverage of Jones paled in comparison to coverage other college sites like Auburn gave their swimmers in Beijng. Jones represents EVERYTHING that is right with collegiate athletics and I just don’t understand why NC State would not want to do everything in their power to be married to him privately and publicly.

Amongst many other attractive characteristics, Jones is:

* one of the best Olympic stories possible.
* a guy talking about how much his parents mean to him,
* a guy that shows “what is right about college athletics”.
* an athlete truly breaking down racial barriers and becoming a leader at the highest level.
* a connection with Michael Phelps in Phelps’ hardest race and his quest of 8 gold medals.

There were great interviews of Jones all across the internet before and after one of the most dramatic Olympic moments that any of us will ever experience. You would think that someone at Gopack.com would be forward-thinking and link all of the info about Jones on the web the morning after the race and make it the featured story for most of the day. It took us all of five minutes to throw this up on SFN for our readers.

Let’s see…ESPN made Jones’ relay win the feature story on their website for half the day after the race. But, not GoPack.com. You get the picture.

Since we gave them such a free pass last week, it is only fair to not let the following mistake pass from the weekend —

In the article ‘Opportunties Abound For Injured Pack’ GoPack.com gives us the following

At wide receiver, sophomore Owen Spencer is now the team’s most experienced returning player. He caught five passes last year for 73 yards as a true freshman. Sophomores Jarvis Williams and Darrell Davis have also seen some brief action on the field, as well as returning junior Geron James, who was not enrolled in school last year and hasn’t played since 2006. Andrew Evans and redshirt freshmen Steven Howard and Jay Davis will also add to the receiving.

As you may remember, Jay Davis is the Wolfpack’s former quarterback who followed Philip Rivers and who graduated a couple of years ago. I *think* that they meant to reference Jay Smith, a highly-rated redshirt freshman wide receiver from Virginia.

Look…we ALL make mistakes – both big and small. But, we don’t all do this for a living. The authors who contribute to this blog are far from perfect; but, we don’t attempt to run a ‘professional’ website while getting paid to run the official website of NC State University with the luxury of editors and staff.

We certainly are NOT coming down on Tim Peeler for this minor, honest mistake. Peeler is easily one of THE BEST in the business and does a fantastic job covering the Pack. Again, we all make simple understandable mistakes, especially when rushed trying to get pieces completed; which is about 95% of the time. But, even Peeler’s fantastic work needs someone who knows what they are doing providing edits.

Maybe this is just some balance and karma for Jay Davis! I mean, GoPack.com did blame him for a huge loss a couple of years ago against Wake Forest when Marcus Stone was actually the quarterback under center. To see what we mean and for more support of this entire entry then you should click here and even take the time to click on some of those links.

Post-script – Please take a look at Dogbreath’s first comment below and feel free to also use this entry to discuss the ‘improvements’ that GoPack.com recently implemented. The site has gotten WORSE.

As with everything else, NC State comletely bungled an opportunity with the low quality “upgrade” of gopack.com. I wonder how much loot JD Clampett forked out to some “internetters” on this project?

From a usability standpoint, its horrifying. Not to mention the fonts are all wrong, there appears to be no stylebook, and the photos and pages load about half the time.

We could have given this project to some kids at the design school and it would have been a 1000% improvement.

Even if their excuse was “well, GoPack strives to do the best coverage of actively enrolled student athletes” it still wouldn’t hold water (and neither will Casey Natatorium in a few more years).

Obvioulsy they should do more. To give them the benfit of the doubt they maybe waiting for Cullen to return stateside.

My point that I’ve tried to hammer on recently is that Brooks Teal, the active HC, has now helped train and coach two Gold medal Olypimians. He is a very well recognized coach in the sprint distances, and the school does nothing to promote his accomplishments.

Ah, there is an idea….utilizing the group of young adults who attend one hell of a design school at the university.

Amazing that someone didn’t come up with some kind of contest or competition, or extra credit capability here at the least.

I’m still trying to find some kind of coverage of Media Day on Gopack. But it’s only been two days, so I guess they’ll get to it eventually.

The Block S logo needs to be in the upper right hand corner. That is our main logo and the upper right had corner is the first place people look.

We can hardly expect the media to have stories about wolfpack sports and athletes when we can’t even toot our own horn. I know under the anti sports arm of Todd Turner media coverage was horrible. I asked several media members why wolfpack sports stories and coverage were so absent from their papers, TV sports news and such. They said cause they didn’t get much from State, that getting information was like pulliing teeth.

I think we are doing a fair job now of sending out information, but it could be much better and much more positive. I think this is a great post. Cullen Jones should be our poster child right now. what a great story!!!!

The trend has long been established that anything Foulup touches turns to (worse) garbage. GoPack.com is no exception!

I think we should come up with a serious list
20 Things We Would Do to make GoPack.com better

  9. Rick 08/18/2008 at 9:31 AM #

    I will start the list
    1) Fire LF (I only partially jest)

  10. pakfanistan 08/18/2008 at 9:34 AM #

    0) Fire their web developer

  11. crackdog 08/18/2008 at 10:01 AM #

    1. Block S, Tuffy should be prominent
1b. Ditch the new age logos.
    2. Stick with 2 fonts MAX.

  12. RickJ 08/18/2008 at 10:03 AM #

The concern regarding Cullen Jones is spot on but I can think of another example that seems even worse to me. I doubt 5% of NC State fans even know that we have a former player in a key role with the US Men’s basketball team. It has never been mentioned on GoPack and is hardly mentioned anywhere – Nate McMillan is an assistant coach.

  13. LRM 08/18/2008 at 10:04 AM #

The paradox of the State athletics marketing strategy has always seemed to be that in its vast, unyielding attempt to market a national product, it ignores its natural, loyal fan base right here at home.

I guess they figure we’ll keep giving them our disposable incomes regardless of how bad they are. And for the most part, we haven’t proven them wrong.

Semi-unrelated, but I saw in transactions over the weekend that Josh Powell signed with the Lakers. Fourth NBA team in three years.

Come on guys…..don’t you get it…..Lee Fowler Hates the internet.

  16. StateFans 08/18/2008 at 11:00 AM #

^ Yet he now has his own BLOG!

Chew on that one for a while.

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 08/18/2008 at 11:06 AM #

Lee Fowler loves the way Go Pack covers the “Wolf Pack” especially with those online auctions. LOL

  18. packpigskinfan23 08/18/2008 at 11:31 AM #

Lee Fowler gets to spit out whatever his fingers desire ONCE A WEEK now. We are F@$&ed.

I personally dont mind the new site(aside from lack of good coverage of ANYTHING), except for that damn logo. I HATE the logo- and I dont ever want to see it over the block S or Tuffie. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we are gonna be seeing a LOT more of it starting opening game.

Are the jerseys for sale on the Gopack shop our new ones?! ….

On gopack.com in the article about the stadium anthem sing along (which I may have more on later) lists Wisconsin playing Van Halen’s “Jump” when the actual song they play is House Of Pain’s “Jump Around”

Still no rifle media guide but at least there isn’t a dead link like the previous version.

5 of the 7 annual report links still don’t work.

Headline for a baseball article is “Baseball Loses Jones To Draft”, the picture is of Sam Brown (although Brown is mentioned in the article)

The new layout is way too busy, almost sensory overload.

  20. choppack1 08/18/2008 at 11:54 AM #

Yes – the new website and log stinks.

But, good gosh – the 3rd and 4th quarter sing-a-longs??? Please – can we just vote “no” for an answer? YOu think Wisconsin and tOSU did an on-line poll for these???

    The options:
    1) hey Baby
    2) You give love a bad name
    3) Song of the South
    4) Start Me Up
    5) Something else forgettable…

Geez, it just really makes you lose any faith in decisions makers…

“^ Yet he now has his own BLOG! ”

    For the love of criminey
The unmitigated gall of that man. To criticize the interwebs and then participate in what he criticized.

What brilliant bits of homespun wisdom does he spew?
    Which olympic moms are cougars?
Which fan base has the most lunatics?
Where to buy porn mustache wax?
How to laze around a lake?

  22. El Scrotcho 08/18/2008 at 12:17 PM #

…uggg…this thing looks like a mediocre to bad Myspace page. I’m surprised there’s not some annoying onload music to add to the ambience.

    1) That horrid logo design is horrible. There is some kind of faux 3d beveling going on there just doesn’t work.
    2) The headline banner and logo doesn’t even render properly in IE 7.0 half the time. Renders correctly in Firefox. Other occasional graphics glitches pop up in IE 7.0 periodically.
    3) Tried to watch a Video about the new GoPack.com …video failed 1/3 in, audio continued. http://www.gopack.com/mediaPlayer/video.dbml?LCH=1&CLIP_ID=134699&CLIP_FILE_ID=139351&CONTENT_TYPE=ONDEMAND&db_oem_id=9200&KEY=&DB_OEM_ID=9200&DB_LANG=&IN_SUBSCRIBER_CONTENT=
    4) Horizontal “drop down” main navigation? Okay…I guess it works, but it feels entirely awkward because you’re displaying a list not a sentence. Lists are more easily read in a vertical fashion. Period. If you insist on using horizontal you at least have to put a divider in there like that top level menu items.
    5) Advertising? Honestly…how much revenue could they possibly be generating from that? Waste of screen real estate that is probably the single biggest obstacle to establishing a balanced, clean, look and feel.
    6) There’s just way too much movement going on. On Load you have a top banner that is animated…the main flash area is changing every 5 seconds, faster than you can possibly take in, then it takes off for a hyper scroll through Upcoming Events, Recent News, Multimedia, and Blogs at a clip of 5 seconds per. There’s a scrolling ticker across the ticket area. Up to two animated advertisments, and a countdown at the top. That’s 5 out of 6 widgets above the fold that are in motion.
    7) There’s approximately 60 image files on the front page…the majority in .jpg format. Overkill?
    8) Some section headers are clickable, some not. This should be consistent across the board.
    9) Fonts? Too many. Jesus…somebody establish a simple stylesheet.
    10) NC State Cross “Courntry”? Did anyone proof this stuff? http://www.gopack.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9200&KEY=&SPID=3729&SPSID=41947
    11) On sports pages, the information that someone is most likely to be seeking (Tickets, Schedule, Roster, Statistics) is wedged between 6 gaudy overlogoed widgets.
    12) I’m on a page with 3 different ads, all for the Gopack.com Photo Store. Really….do I need to see that 3 times in three different form factors.
    13) NC STA RIFL? Is that some shorthand I’m unaware of? http://www.gopack.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9200&KEY=&SPID=3726&SPSID=41925
    14) What is this misplaced toolbar looking Pack Pass thing that is lodged curiously in the middle of every page?
    15) Football and basketball get the same treatment as the other sports. I think I’d make a little more effort for the cash cows, but that’s just me.
    16) No dates on the news articles on the individual sports pages

Overall a lot of the individual widgets are pretty well done. However, there is no sense of overall style and taste in the presentation. It’s almost as if someone said, “If these 10 pieces of furniture are great individually, they will be even better if we cram them all into the same room.” There’s so much activity crammed into the space that it’s impossible to effectively focus the visitor’s attention on anything in particular. It’s not hopeless, but it needs some ruthless pruning and somebody with a hint of design taste.

For all of you that “love” the new triple wolf logo, check out the football jerseys on the gopack.com store…

    https://www.nmnathletics.com/sellnew/ViewItem.dbml?_IN_STORE_=YES&DB_OEM_ID=9200&ITMID=23796&ITMCATID=617

Looks like we’ll have to get used to seeing it

One related athletic department question. Is the basketball team’s august trip to Canada our once every 3 or 4 years international trip? If so, why are we going to Canada? Is that as lame ass as it sounds? Is this something different? (packpride has a piece on it today)

  25. PackerInRussia 08/18/2008 at 1:57 PM #

One new feature that I particularly liked was the countdown for how long it takes the page to load…Oh wait, that was the countdown to the first football game.
