Don’t Look Ethel

When I say that the title was the concluding sentence of a State football preview, I’m sure that some of our younger readers will be left scratching their heads. But before we get to that, here’s how I got to that line:

My first exposure to techsideline.com came in 2004 after State beat VT in B’burg. A co-worker printed out their review of State’s 10-sack performance and gave it to me. I was impressed with the level of detail that was put into analyzing what had to be a frustrating defeat for Hokie fans. Each sack was broken down by number of blitzers and time to sack. The “blame” for the sack was then given to Randall or the OL based on how much time each sack took. (The other thing that I find interesting about TSL is that they are a pay-site that is not connected with the University, Rivals, or Scout.)

So with such a positive first impression, I took the time to read their short preview of NC State. Here are a few of the more choice lines:

Tom O’Brien is entering his second year at NC State. He did a very good job in his first year, coming within one game of getting the Wolfpack to a bowl game. He did that despite having quarterbacks that threw the ball to the other team a lot more than they did to their own receivers….

Despite having three good runners, yards will probably be hard to come by. NC State has major weaknesses at pretty much every other position on offense. Their quarterbacks aren’t good, the offensive line isn’t particularly talented, and they lost both of their starting wide receivers from last year’s team…

…2008 will most likely be a don’t-look-Ethel kind of season.

It was interesting that I read that preview a minutes after reading an article from yahoo titled “Six Packs: 6 Teams Destined to Disappoint”

Look who we see at #3:

3) VIRGINIA TECH—Coach Frank Beamer’s Hokies have earned the respect they get in the preseason, but if you put a different name on this team’s resume, it probably wouldn’t be favored to reach the ACC title game. Tech returns only 10 starters and said goodbye to its leading rusher and four top pass catchers from last year. There are no obvious replacements. The top three tacklers on defense? Also gone. In fact most of last year’s typical tough D will be playing on Sundays this season. Rebuilding year, anyone?

The difference in these two reviews highlight my biggest complaint about most pre-season previews…losing a starter doesn’t necessarily mean that a team is going to stink at that position. It does mean that it is a major question mark for the next season. Every year, kids step up and perform beyond what was expected. Every year, some returning star gets hurt and misses the season or has some nagging injury that limits his performance. College football is as much about having quality depth as it is about having stars.

Bottom line: It takes alot of work to do a meaningful preseason review of a single team and even more to do an assessment of the whole conference. Anytime I see a preview without that type of work put into it, I rarely take the time to finish reading it. Even if you disagree with TSLs projection for State, at least they took the time to gather up some real facts about the team before drawing a conclusion….and VT doesn’t even play State this year. Don’t you wish national media outlets put as much effort into their articles?

VT fans should obviously be worried about the rotating QB situation and how that will affect those two young men. They should be worried about running back, since a crippled Brandon Ore was their best option last year. But until proven otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about Bud Foster’s defense until some weakness has been shown on the field. Given the pitiful state of offenses in the ACC, VT could easily be “down” on defense and still have enough to compete for the ACC title game. Even if they don’t make the title game, I find it doubtful that their season will be so bad as to qualify as disappointing.

Unfortunately for State fans, most of the negative comments about the upcoming season are based on the play of the returning starters. The question marks on new players simply compounds what is already a pretty bleak outlook. If you still want more, then I always like reading the team reviews from College Football News. I don’t remember CFN being associated with Scout last year, but it still has more facts (usually with a few errors) and less opinion than many of the other pre-season articles that you will find.

Putting as much positive spin as possible, CFN defines a successful season for State by:

The season will be a success if … the Pack reaches .500. There are no delusions of grandeur here, as NC State attempts to create momentum under O’Brien and his staff. A bowl game would be fantastic, but not the only measure of success for the program. If the Pack can improve on last year while being more competitive against the ACC’s better schools, it’ll qualify as something to build on for 2009.

EDIT

I almost forgot…..for anyone that missed the significance of the title….Google “The Streak”.

    wulfpup76,
you forgot about the wake forest game, one week after the unc game. the maryland game was coming off a loss. at least they put up somewhat of a fight against wake forest.

if i recall correctly, maryland ran all over us. and both beck and evans sucked out loud (burke played one series as well?).

Awesome link i found – interview with Dean Haynes. The kid looks and sounds a little bit like Derek Jeter. He’s supposed to be fast as…

I’ve followed football for a long time, and i don’t see how the Heels are expected to do well – wishful thinking from the media i know. The strength of their team last year was their defensive live and they weren’t that good as attested by Jamelle Eugene stomping on them all game long. And they have NOT replaced that bunch. The offense is the same offense that couldn’t run the ball in Schoop’s crap attack. A bunch of failed NFL types over there at The ‘Hole. So i don’t get it. If you can control the Line of Scrimmage against uNx you can play tight on their receivers which is what teams started doing towards the middle of the year and it worked. Remember Morgan’s interception on Yates first pass??

DuPack – I agree that TOB is good. However, so is Jim Grobe, Tommy Bowden, Paul Johnson, Butch Davis and Frank Beamer. That leaves Cutcliffe, Shannon, Bowden, Groh and Fridge – and all but Shannon have proven they can at least put together some really good seasons.

did you guys know that the punter we signed, Chris Ward, is considered the #1 prospect in the nation

    http://www.rafterprotraining.com/92.html

  6. Noah 08/12/2008 at 8:24 AM #

There is a difference between being the top prospect in the nation…and being the top PUNTING prospect in the nation.

    Just saying…

  7. Ismael 08/12/2008 at 8:34 AM #

i’ll take top water boy, towel-boy/girl whatever top we can get as long as it contributes to wins. I understand your clarification, but wasn’t it obvious? “…punter we signed….#1 prospect…”

  8. waxhaw 08/12/2008 at 8:35 AM #

^ That’s true but if anybody ever needed the top punter in the nation, it’s us.

There is no “competition” – Russell Wilson IS THE STARTER. You don’t have to believe us, but that is the case.

O’Brien is playing the game like a maestro. Shift things around so Visor Boy doesn’t know who to prepare for on 8/28. But look a little deeper and you’ll see that:

    1) Glennon consistently gets the most reps. The staff couldn’t evaluate him in the spring, and needs to see if it’s worth burning his redshirt if Wilson gets seriously hurt.

    2) Wilson gets the second most reps, but more than enough for the starter. He plays the equivalent of a quarter plus, like most NFL starters do in the preseason. I would guess he always lines up against the first team defense, and that the staff tries to turn up the pressure for his snaps, to get him prepared for the opener.

    3) Evans also needs reps after missing spring ball. The staff needs to see if he’s capable of being the short-term #2 guy. And, they want Visor Boy to think he might start.

We can only hope he isn’t as overrated…

A great Punter is worth as many yards a game as a good running back, especially in close ones.

  12. Classof89 08/12/2008 at 9:15 AM #

Any explanation for Wilson’s mediocre numbers from the scrimmages? Are they downplaying Wilson to make it (the QB race) look more competitive than it is?

And it may have been discussed on here before, but what horrible flaw does Burke have such that he has never really been given a chance to show what he can do? What could he possibly do that would be worse than Beck’s 5 INT performance against BC last year?

  13. wufpup76 08/12/2008 at 9:22 AM #

You’re right McPete – thanks for clarifying 🙂

  14. VaWolf82 08/12/2008 at 9:32 AM #

he has never really been given a chance to show what he can do

You’ve stumbled into one of my pet peeves. Just because you haven’t seen someone play in a game, that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t been given a chance to show what he can do. If the coaches aren’t playing someone, then it probably means that other kids are playing better. And if the starters are not playing well….then that should tell you something about the kids that aren’t playing.

You could make the same argument about the 50,000 people sitting in the stands.

redfred…older people enjoy sarcasm as well. i was just joking that older folk have lived through more NC State disappointment than us younger folk and in the process, have turned pessimistic. its just a basic coping skill. expect the worse and hope for the best. i hope my generation doesn’t have to endure the pain of the last 20 years. lee fowler sucks.

btw, in recruiting news, it seems we (and a whole slew of other schools) have offered Dewitt. Competition includes West VA, Ok, Ok St., Marquette, Miami, Fl St., Nebraska, Missouri, Cincy

Scout.com sucks at updating offers so I would expect more offers are outstanding. if you are like me and tend to judge a prospect more by his offers than some recruiting analyst who never made it as a coach, dewitt sounds like a nice prospect.

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that an optimist is never pleasantly surprised.

  18. vtpackfan 08/12/2008 at 12:03 PM #

Instead of penciling names of starters at each position and projecting the season, sports writers and fans who follow closely to developments should instead focus on depth.

Its nice having people write about Willie Young and who is looking primed for the NFL, but who do we have to spell him, be it for rest of God save us if we be snake bitten furthermore.

Having Eugene provided us with excellent depth last year, unfortunately that we were still w/o the services of two feature backs we had to burn Underwoods RS

Barnes had some uplifting moments but he should have gotten a chance to grow and mature to be a RS. Ditto Vermiglio.

OL and DL depth was choatic last year (Remember BC and Jamual Clemmons? I don’t think Go Pack even had him on the roster). Mears Green was probably the most improved player on the team last year, this opinion is based mostly on the observation that his one pass blocking technique was tickling pass rushers when they tried a chop or swim move.

  19. packalum44 08/12/2008 at 1:45 PM #

i’m typically a cynic. for instance, i believed the John Edwards affair before it was mainstream and i dreaded football season when amato was around. i am just optimistic with a talented coach at the helms. i don’t think its prudent to over-analyze a football team. we turned our season around last year midway through. our players have a year of experience. we have question marks at quarterback, linebacker, and o-line but we will improve at all three. hence, we will be better and bowl.

  20. ChiefJoJo 08/12/2008 at 2:05 PM #

I’m not a pessimist, just been burned by promises of improvement at positions of weakness in seasons past, i.e., ‘the OL is looking good’ etc. (note: TSL says we haven’t averaged 4yds per carry as a team for a season in TEN YEARS… ouch!) Any objective observer can see we have holes on our depth chart, so the questions that must be answerede are:

    (1) Can enough guys step up to fill those voids?
    (2) Can we avoid major injuries?
    (3) Can we drastically reduce mental mistakes?
    (4) Can our coaching help us win close games?

As I said before, I fully expect the mistakes to fall dramatically this year with another year of coaching, but for the rest I say, let the team prove me & the media wrong. The coaches would be wise to utilize an ‘us vs the world’ attitude I think.

BJD95 has a plausible argument W/R/T Wilson, and the scrimmage stats can be explained with that theory as well. I’ve heard more than one person argue that Wilson’s the man, and my own team source says that the coaches absolutely love his leadership on and off the field. We shall see.

  21. choppack1 08/12/2008 at 2:31 PM #

packalum – I’d feel better about our turnaround if we didn’t relapse our last 2 games – especially since the UMd was arguable our worst game all year.

  22. BJD95 08/12/2008 at 3:03 PM #

Plus, when the pocket collapses after 2 seconds, Wilson will have a fighting chance to run for his life.

  23. Ismael 08/12/2008 at 3:41 PM #

BadgerPack – Derek Jeter is awesome. He wouldn’t be playing baseball and especially not shortstop for the most storied franchise in sports history, in NYC, if he wasn’t the man.

  24. pakfanistan 08/12/2008 at 3:42 PM #

He’s going to spend at least a second picking the snap up off of his shoe laces

  25. redfred2 08/12/2008 at 5:09 PM #

^That was one of Evans biggest hurdles, having to reach down, look at the ground just to find out where the football was, then having to look up and refocus, while quickly trying to figure where his receivers were and whether they were open or not. All of that while wasting valuable seconds as the OL was collapsing all around him.

Surely they have fixed the problems with the shoot gun snap.
