College Football Saturday- Week 1 Open Thread

I thought I’d put this up to leave a place for folks to comment on the first Saturday of college football. If you’re like me, this marks the first of many Saturdays filled with grilled food and the beverage of your choice.

Plenty of action today, VT and ECU are at it now, and in a surprise Hawaii and Florida are in a low scoring game in the Swamp. Later in the day we get Virginia/USC (the Yankees of college football- read into that what you will) and Clemson/Alabama in a night game. Plus a smattering of other games, some more interesting than others. (Me for example, I’m enjoying Wisconsin vs. partial qualifier university, err, Akron.)

Have at it.

Watching the ECU game…it’s sad, but Andre Ware commented how poorly NC State played this past Thursday. He said, ECU may not be able beat Va Tech, but they wouldn’t have a problem beating the Wolfpack of NC State the way they played Thursday night.

The funniest thing so far is the commercials…I can’t recall ever seeing a commercial for Natural Light…until now.

Perfect illustration of Beamer Ball – EZU scores the apparent tying TD. But not so fast – Tech blocks the extra point and runs it back for two.

How bad are the viewing options that I am left to watch a poorly played game between two of my least favorite teams in Division I?

The only game I’m looking forward to is Mizzou/Illinois tonight.

can’t wait for clemson/alabama. wanna see usc/virginia as well.

and i hope mike glennon turns out to be more of a quarterback than big bro. ecu looks pretty good, but VT seems to have trouble pressuring the QB. we shouldn’t have that problem at least.

Cut Sean a break. He does have Mike (QB Killa) O’Cain as his position coach.

Well BJD, if you have the Big Ten network you could always watch PJ Hill and his 22 carries, 193 yards so far…

The defensive struggle in the first quarter has turned into an old fashioned woodshed beating in Gainesville. Florida still doesn’t look all that impressive; the defense will have a lot of trouble against SEC opponents (and FSU/Miami for that matter).

Beamer w/ an inexplicable decision to kick a long FG from hash mark on 4th and 1.

ECU looks well coached offensively, but they make lots of mental errors.

Heisman tropy candidate Wells for OSU has an unknown injury. His team was up 33-0 in the 3rd quarter…

USC is going to plaster UVA. I read where Groh wasn’t going to disclose who the Cavs’ starting QB will be until kickoff. Yea, Pete Carroll is really pissing in his pants now!

Welcome to the SEC, App! Roll Tide! Gosh, I never thought I ever say that except to an Auburn fan.

  9. Dr. BadgerPack 08/30/2008 at 1:30 PM #

Groh should put his QB’s in the witness relocation program…

Andre Ware is a fucking moron. He was debating whether ECU should go for 2 or kick the extra point. Maybe he thought the Pirates could go for 3.

  11. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:40 PM #

As an aside, the Pirate faithful are even uglier in HD.

In Andre’s defense, he’s probably taken more than his fair share of shots to the head… Not that he was going to be confused with Newton before all that.

Exhibit 289 why Florida annoys me– 42-0, third quarter. Tebow airing it out on first down.

  14. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:45 PM #

Good strategy by VT. Remember, EZU has a sucky kicker.

  15. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:49 PM #

Holy crap, blocked punt, TD Pirates. Didn’t see that coming.

  16. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:52 PM #

Sean Glennon does not have the mental makeup of a successful QB.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 08/30/2008 at 1:53 PM #

“Sean Evans” is not a good QB….

  18. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:56 PM #

Ballgame. Hokies lose. The ACC is really going to suck this year. Beamer may want to reconsider Tyrod Taylor.

At least VT won’t go into Chapel Hill overconfident.

The Dave Wandstet (sp?) era is about over. Bowling Green is rolling Pitt pretty good.

  19. Dr. BadgerPack 08/30/2008 at 1:57 PM #

Watching Glennon just reminds you how hard it is to scout QBs. The leaps from HS to College, and College to the NFL are exponential. It’s very hard to asses these guys. Especially the HS QBs– how many HS QBs have their mental makeup really tested?

“Our” Glennon I would hope is mentally a lot better prepared– or at least has the capacity to learn how to react under pressure.

  20. BJD95 08/30/2008 at 1:58 PM #

Again, our Glennon won’t be tutored by MOC.

  21. Wulfpack 08/30/2008 at 2:05 PM #

Huge win for ECU. They are def. on the rise. Not a good start thus far for the the ACC. Clemson needs to carry the torch tonight or else it is a pretty good opening weekend shalacking in the games that matter.

  22. b 08/30/2008 at 2:11 PM #

Maybe the worst “excessive” celebration penalty I’ve ever seen called on BGSU.

  23. Dr. BadgerPack 08/30/2008 at 2:15 PM #

BJD- How much can you really tutor mental makeup? You can improve footwork, reads, route timing… and all of these will build confidence, which can allow you to be better mentally. I don’t think you can teach maintaining poise after a few mistakes, or getting down a few scores.

Loved my Badgers today. Roll to victory and throw a whole 10 times. 400ish yards on the ground.

  24. wpackman33 08/30/2008 at 2:22 PM #

The pirates look pretty good. i think we’ll have our hands fuller than we thought. The ACC needs to really step it up this year. Go Tigers!! Help out the ACC.
But hey, a not so good week of college football is better than no college football at all.

Does anyone know any follow up with Russell Wilson? Is their a timeline on his return, if any?

    People will diss me–that’s okay.

I thought Skip Holtz was a phoney when he got the ECU job [after supposedly, being in line for the SC throne]; but I’ve been incrediby impressed by his coaching at ECU.

He has rebuilt the program; handles the players well on the field; maximizes their potential; calls the right plays at the right time; has all units playing together; is a ‘right now’ disciplinarian to kids who screw up during the game; and gets ECU an extra win [more than they should have] each year because of something he comes up with in coaching insight each week.

It’s not popular to ‘like’ ECU [it’s a kind of disgusting pleasure], but I enjoy watching a team play as a team and with efficiency… and Skip has them doing it.

That said, I’m 100% Wolfpacker and can’t wait until we get to that ‘foundation’ building level.
