Carter-Finley Karaoke

NC State’s athletic department is currently taking votes for a sing-along anthem to be played between the third and fourth quarters at Carter-Finley Stadium. You can find the article and vote here.

Let’s take a look at the 3 songs mentioned in the first paragraph of the gopack.com article. First, “Sweet Caroline” was played at Red Sox games because Fenway’s music director had heard it played at other sporting events and would play it at random late in the game if the Sox were winning. The fans soon began to anticipate the song as a good luck charm and is now a tradition.

Second, “Hang On Sloopy” was played at Ohio State because a marching band member convinced the band director to let the marching band play the song. The crowd at the Horseshoe had a positive reaction so the band started to play it at every game and is now a tradition.

And third, House of Pain’s “Jump Around” (not Van Halen’s “Jump” as initally stated in the article. Imagine that, sloppy editing on gopack.com although it is now fixed) just happened to be played at Wisconsin in an ugly game against Purdue. It pumped up the crowd and the team and is now a tradition.

Notice a theme? None of these traditions were manufactured. A song just happened to be played at the stadium, the crowd liked it, so they played it again next game and now it is played every game. It just happened naturally, there were no polls or votes or anyone telling the fans what song they are supposed to like.

So NC State’s athletic department, on the cutting edge as usual, is trying to manufacture traditions because other teams are doing it too (see also the new wolf statue in the tunnel. The Cranberries album “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” must be popular in the athletic department these days). Although, I’m not sure how we were going to naturally create a tradition when the jumbotron is usually playing a Fox 50 commercial, the wacky donkey House-Autry ad, win Chuck’s Truck or reminders to recycle (even though it is a worthwhile cause).

Now let’s take a look at the 5 finalist songs. I’m a big music fan, I may not be up on every new indie band but my iPod has a pretty wide range of music. So this is my take on these songs, you may or may not agree, I understand music taste is subjective.

First, “Hey Baby” by Bruce Channel. Decent choice, I’m neutral on this song. It’s not on my iPod but I don’t hate it either. Along with the Sugarhill Gang’s “Apache” it seems to have caught on some with the student section. Of course, instead of letting these songs catch on naturally we have to go through the official voting process.

Second, “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi. Really? That’s not even the best Bon Jovi option, I would have gone with “Livin’ On A Prayer”. If we have to have some 80s hair metal, why not Ozzy’s “Bark At The Moon” which would at least tie in with our mascot.

Third, “Song of the South” by Alabama. I know some of Alabama’s stuff, like the mountain music that grandma and grandpa used to play. But I have to admit I was not at all familiar with this song. Which adds a degree of difficulty for singing along plus are you really going to get the crowd to sing “Daddy was a veteran, a southern democrat, They oughta get a rich man to vote like that”? And nothing against country music, but it also plays into the redneck/tractor stereotype.

Fourth, “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty. I’ll say up front that I am a big Tom Petty fan, I celebrate the guy’s entire catalog. When you get a packed crowd at Walnut Creek singing along to the chorus it’s actually pretty cool and the lyrics are fitting and pretty easy to remember. But as much as I love this song, it just doesn’t strike me as a football pump you up type song or more of a fun song like “Hey Baby” and “Apache”.

Fifth, “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones. Starts off with another classic Stones riff but after the first line can you honestly sing the rest of the verse off the top of your head? Neither can I and I’ve probably heard the song at every Hurricanes game I’ve been to over the past 10 years. In its defense, the line in the chorus “You make a grown man cry” is actually pretty fitting for State athletics. But either nobody in the athletic department bothered to take the time to read the lyrics or Mick Jagger’s sexual innuendos went completely over their head. Just a sample of some of the lyrics are “I’ve been running hot, You got me ticking gonna blow my top“ or “If you rough it up, If you like it you can slide it up, slide it up” and of course “You make a dead man come”. Sounds like a perfect sing-along with your kids at the game doesn’t it?

Another problem I have with the finalists is that none of the songs have any sort of connection to the school. For example, as a WVU fan, “Country Roads” is a perfect song for Mountaineer Field, John Denver even played it live when the stadium was dedicated. There may not be a lot of wolf songs but just off the top of my head there are the aforementioned “Bark At The Moon”, Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London”, Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like The Wolf”, Metallica’s “Of Wolf And Man”, Whitesnake’s “Still Of The Night” and oldies like Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh’s “Li’l Red Riding Hood” and “Werewolf” by the Frantics (although more of an instrumental). At least a song like one of those would be unique and fitting and not just some song drawn out of a hat.

I can anticipate this being a colossal failure with half the crowd not even paying attention that we’re supposed to be singing now and the other half not knowing the words. And sprinkled in will be those of us who will refuse to participate on the grounds that manufactured new traditions like this have a high probability of lame.

God, I miss the Five-0. They don’t make dank pits with good music like that anymore. Met my wife there, too.

Five-O–many a nite closing the place down—-Completely different look when the lights came on—in every aspect!

I prefer The Bobs’ version of “Little Red Riding Hood” – especially Richard “Bob” Greene’s do-wop base line of “Hematoma, hematoma, hematoma…”

Another Bobs song, “My Shoes”, would have been good for the previous coach. Imagine a full stadium chanting: “My shoes are…on top of the world!”

Not a fan of “forced” traditions, but ‘Werewolves of London’ or ‘Hungury Like the Wolf’ would get my vote quicker than the 5 options given …

What about “Lunatic Fringe”? Seems like it would be a natural for Pack fans. I’m sure the administration would love it…

Steppenwolf, “Born to Be Wild” This song Rocks, has catchy lyrics, and has obvious ties to NC State athletics both in the track and in the name of the artist.

St8Fan- Yep, I was referencing Five-O. Loved it, although I usually prefer my pits to not require a couple flights of stairs… My favorite of course was Mitch’s, but again– the dreaded stairs…

Wisconsin bars usually didn’t come with stairs, thank goodness. There you just sifted through the snow until you stumbled upon a buried door.

I suppose we should give the athletic dept credit for even trying, for seeing the need for something like this. But the fact that they even think they can manufacture this stuff – be it a song, or a wolf statue – shows how out of touch our school is with even having these traditions.

From what has been discussed so far, I think the most plausible, and least seemingly manufactured songs would be either Hey Baby – since the band and students already do it, OR – the Drowning Pool tune, Bodies – since we had used that in the past and the chant is something the crowd could do, along with the counting that goes on in that song.

At least with either of those choices, we have a little history of doing them. But really, the larger question is why stuff like this never catches on at State anyway. Half the people in the stands seem to get annoyed by those of us who sing Hey Baby as it is. Right or wrong, Wolfpack Nation is not exactly a country of joiners.

First.. being near USC.. they used to play Carolina Girls after the 3rd. Its become some bad, it created a message board riot. So quick thoughts..

You have to remember this is being played in the 3rd quarter.. so either if the game is close, the last thing you want is some cheesy sing along. (or Jiffy Lube commercial) The songs like Sloopy and Sweet Carolina have VERY catchy chorus and everyone knows them. Werewolves in London might be great with all the howling, Little Red Riding Hood.. doesn’t quite have the chorus.

Most “modern” songs fail to have a chorus at all, especially the songs listed. Start Me Up is the most upbeat and feels more like football.. but its not a sing along song and frankly a little tired. In terms of football and not Ipod.. Bon Jovi is awful, Song of South only promotes a red neck image, Petty is a little flat for crowd pumping.

Just a thought.. but BE CAREFUL here..

Dr. BadgerPack–usually started the night at Mitch’s and ended up at 5-0. Ahhh—the carefree days!

and yes, the stairs could be a chore to navigate after an early start and late finish!

I never really cared for Mitch’s. Too bright and too clean.

I have only been enough of a regular at 3 bars in my life for the owner and bartnders to all recognize me (and give me better service): Five-O, PR, and The Original NC Sports Bar in Chapel Hill (watched football every weekend there when I was in law school). This was in the old days, when it was still a dank pit. The owner was able to find the Big 12 Raycom broadcast (this was pre-Gameplan) of Baylor/NC State for me. That was the game that we lost 14-0 at home and only had one first down in the first half (result of 2 consecutive offsides penalties – we turned the ball over on the next play), and never crossed the 50 until under the 2 minute mark. Still the worst Wolfpack game I ever saw, and clearly the most I ever drank during a game.

That Baylor game was one of the worst weather games I have attended. Near freezing and rain all day long. That was back in the day when I always drank bourbon inside the stadium though.

I like Mitch’s better than PRs, but the furniture is just so uncomfortable. I have never understood the fascination with PR. I don’t find the food all that good, but some people love it.

Still both places are solid these days and I make it to both occassionally since I am back in the neighborhood again.

I know, I know, I have a bad habit of posting off topic. Q&A with Vinny though, worth looking at…i hope he succeeds in Chicago…certainly won’t be from a lack of talent, however young…

BJD – I was a huge fan of PRs, and NCOSB as well. I’ve shot many a hoop at that basketball goal they have in their.

NCOSB was a sports bar before the concept really blew up and became more commercialized. (Actually, what really changed was that “NFL ticket” became available so almost every bar around became a sports bar.) You’re right – it was dark and dank in there. They had lots of TVs in there – but none of them were really good. They also had a couple very hot bartenders – who were, of course, usually the only females in there.

I’m also a huge PR fan. PR and Mitch’s are really the only “pubs” that have any “historical” value on Hillsborough Street. (Actually, even though I’ve only been there a couple of times I guess Sadlack’s qualifies.) Both of these stops should be required before getting a diploma from NC State University.

The only decent tradition we have at football games is the halftime pass-out. Anybody who espouses the idea of a “new tradition” should be shot for idiocy. Yeah, “Coach”, I’m talking to you. Don’t f around with our 1 decent tradition and keep all of your ideas for “new traditions” to yourself.

You know, for the life of me, I don’t have a single memory of that Baylor game.

For years, I thought that was the game that was played in a big rainstorm, but I’m reasonably certain I’m confusing it with the Purdue game that opened the 1993 season.

Baylor was 1995. I went to the Marshall game. I listened to the UVa game on the radio (they scored on their final possession). I watched the FSU game at a friend’s house in Greenville. We actually led 17-14 before giving up nine consecutive touchdowns.

I remember Clemson the week after Baylor. That was Terry Harvey throwing seven interceptions (a league record). I remember listening to the Alabama game (I remember Darwin Walker playing TE). I remember Dook, it was during the state fair, which I worked…parking cars.

But I don’t have a single memory of that Baylor game. I can’t imagine what I was doing that weekend. I don’t even remember reading about it in the paper.

They’ll still be playing “Carolina Girls” next Thursday night in Cola!

I really like the Ballad of Jed Clampett and the whole stadium tunes in loudly with “Jed, move away from here”!

Anybody found me a Fire Lee Fowler shirt to wear next Thursday? I may have to have one made this weekend.

I just can’t get behind any of the songs that are being voted upon. Who came up with this list anyway?

I don’t like the song “Hungry Like a Wolf” on a musical level, but I listen to it every time I hear it on the radio to reflect back on the “Glory Days”. Come to think of it…both those songs are better than the finalists being voted upon.

While I think that in general this isn’t the greatest idea…if we are gonna all stand up and sing like a bunch of yankees from ohio, boston, or for that matter wisconsin…we should at least try and improve upon what we’re copying. Its kind of like when someone invents something and gets a patent on it…you can’t use it without their permission…unless you improve upon it.

Any song we sing should have relevance to:
    A. N.C. State
    B. Our region
    C. Football or preferably any sport
    D. All of the above

Preferably it would also transcend generations as well as excite fans and the sports teams.

  19. wolf2003 08/21/2008 at 3:22 PM #

As a student, I can almost guarantee more than half of the students won’t even know these songs. I for one don’t and could care less about singing between the third and fourth quarters. I like to get involved in the games, chant, scream and etc. None of these songs get me pumped up about football.

There shouldn’t be a reason we have to copy someone else’s tradition. Start our own thing to get people talking about it.

  20. redfred2 08/21/2008 at 3:44 PM #

JimValvano, so give me a list of suitable songs to choose from, which contain any of those attributes. I don’t really care if they make this thing work or not, but either way I don’t think the song has to be about anything specific, it just needs to be a tune that gets people out of their seats and their blood flowing.

wolf2003, if you’re talking about the list of songs that have been officially proposed, then I wouldn’t worry too much about not knowing them. But as far as some of the better songs that have been suggested by different folks on this thread, then I wouldn’t worry too much about not knowing them either if I were you, you’re a “student” afterfall, given proper time I’m fairly certain you could learn them.

  21. ChuckAllYall 08/21/2008 at 3:56 PM #

I think instead of a lame-o song they should play the sounds of a pack of wolves ripping through a carcass in the wild while they show the accompanying video on the screen (a la Discovery Channel). I’m sure a few kids would cry and some women would vomit, but it would really whip the vocal and innebriated majority into a primal frenzy.

If this is deemed too inappropriate then my song vote is for, “Your Body is a Wonderland” by John Mayer.

  22. EverettBeez 08/21/2008 at 3:57 PM #

My vote? B-52’s Love Shack – just change Atlanta Highway, to I – Forty!

  23. Daily Update 08/21/2008 at 5:30 PM #

Noah: The Baylor game was in a big rain storm and the temperatures were in the 30s. Again, one of the worst games in terms of weather in my history of going to CF(and yes I have been to the hurricane games.)

  24. Noah 08/21/2008 at 6:12 PM #

It was in the 30s?? On Sept. 23, 1995, in Raleigh, NC, it was in the 30s??

That’s remarkable enough that I think I would have SOME memory of that day. And I just don’t remember anything about it. I find that extremely odd.

  25. Noah 08/21/2008 at 6:18 PM #

I did a google search for 9/23/95 and temperature. Apparently, in Illinois, there was a record low of 32 degrees. But at Fenway Park, it was 61 degrees.

That’s remarkable that in North Carolina and Illinois, the temperature was below 40 degrees, but at Fenway Park in Boston, 1000 miles to the north, it was 61 in the evening. There must have been some remarkably strong thunderstorms somewhere in between wherever the frontal boundary was.
