ACC Football Report Previews Pack

Short version – NC State’s offense sucks, its defense sucks, its special teams suck, and its schedule is hard. The only positive mentioned is that Tom O’Brien is a really good coach, and should win COY if he gets this team to 6-6. Full writeup is here. I would like to disagree, but I really can’t.

One particularly notable observation:

But for now, in 2008, it’s about staying out of the league basement and finding the right players for 2009 and beyond.

This is a concept we’ve kicked around at SFN cyber-HQ, ever since the disappointing reports on offensive performance in the pre-season, and the recent rash of injuries. Of course, this is something that would never happen due to the public relations aspect, but it would be nice to redshirt a whole slew of willing and eligible players (even upperclassmen) and play for 2009 and 2010. You would only not do this for players that need reps to better prepare themselves for important roles in 2009 and 2010.

Well then…that sucks for us. But at least we aren’t dealing with Matt Simms. Remember when we were recruiting him, thinking he would be great b/c he’s Phil Simms son and Chris Simms brother? Yeah, lol:

understatement, “State will prove easier to sell to recruits than Chestnut Hill if O’Brien gets the ship righted and then talk of competing for ACC titles can commence.”

actually, correction: NC State is already easier to sell than BC and always has been. BC, much like Wake Forest, never wowed anyone with their recruiting.

if some of you are to be consistent, i don’t expect you to agree with this statement,
“Recruiting will always be a challenge at Duke and while Cutcliffe is not exactly a walking recruit magnet, the last two Super Bowl MVPs have credited him with much of their development. THAT ALONE will get Duke coaches in the door with kids that wouldn’t have picked up the phone for the Blue Devils in the past.”

Why would we be fine with that (loosing) in Football, but have the expectations/reaction we did last year with Basketball?

Take a look at this comment from Gopack’s interview with Audi Augustin about the DEs:

GoPack.com: “Jeff Reiskamp redshirted last year, so not many people know much about him. How would you describe him?”

Augustin: “I can sum him up in just a few words: Freak of nature. For being as light as he is, he can bench the weight room, can fly like a wide receiver and does not stop for anything. He is crisp off the ball, great first step, a phenomenal athlete. He is ready to be unleashed.”

I never thought of Reiskamp as a potential big time player–certainly not ahead of Young or Kuhn–but out of all the DEs, AA seems to REALLY like him. Sounds like a stud. We could sure use a big year from the DL to make up for shortcomings/inexperience in the LBs and DBs.

^If football doesn’t work out for him, Audi has a great career ahead in public relations.

I will respectfully disagree on the red shirting.. the reason is in my opinion its better for players to have real live playing experience than another year in the weight room. Don’t get me wrong.. the best case scenario is the option to red shirt… but when you are completely dry, it seems much better to say you return a player who is bigger, stronger, has game experience when next year comes around.

Actually in the Football addition of the Wolfpacker, Coach Willis echoed this assertion to some degree. He basically summed it up as “Reiskamp will be All-ACC down the road”.

TOB and his staff were very impressed with Reiskamp and got him to follow them after commiting to BC. Also in the articles I read everything seemed to relating around chemistry. Win or lose this season this team is shaping up to be the anti-mens basketball team.

I asked about Rieskamp last year and was told by several people that the coaches loved the guy. Big time motor and better athleticism than they originally thought.

Mario Henderson, if I’m not mistaken, was a big-time off. tackle prospect for Florida State who ended up getting drafted by the Raiders.

per wral.com, tob just announced in the weekly press conference that mike glennon will redshirt. but no starter has been named yet. probably friday or saturday, when the two teams exchange depth charts.

Who knows what can happen in football if we don’t turn it over. I’m starting to hope that maybe our D can surprise some people.

Aside from Bowens – and Baker – who else have we lost on offense?

  15. JBS 08/20/2008 at 2:45 PM #

And now John Ware is academically suspended. Chalk up another loss to an already thin LB and Safety core.

I wish we could stumble across some good luck, if not for just checks n balances sake.

I lived in PA for several years and there in NO alternative to Penn State football up there. Depending on the radio station you could get a 3 hour pre-game show. One season when Nebraska was in town as part of a home and home, they were interviewing Tom Osborne and he stated that every incoming freshman, EVERY, freshman redshirted. They knew coming in to the program that that would happen.

roandaddy, TOB stated that Glennon is not physically ready to play at this level. Better to be bigger, stronger, have a better grasp of the system, and no playing experience than to have a couple of games playing experience and be permanently on the injured reserve. Grobe has built Wake into a solid program year in and year out starting with almost nothing and with less ability to recruit 3,4, and 5 star talent than most of the league, by redshirting every freshman that walks onto campus. You cannot argue with the results that he has achieved.
